Leader Comment May 2018 Apparently 13 is unlucky for some but we’re having nothing to do with that nonsense. Here at Leyland Leader we are celebrating our 13th birthday this month. Leyland Leader, the Independent Business Magazine for Leyland, first hit the streets of PR25 (and PR26) back in May 2005 and we have come a long way since then. It’s been a fascinating journey, we have met lots of interesting people, made more than a few friends - and delivered around half a million magazines - talk about one small step for man etc…. Our sincere thanks to the hundreds of businesses, trades, services, individuals and organisations who have supported us along the way. Some local companies have appeared in every single issue - this particular one is number 157! Wow!

Back here in 2018 the biggest event of our annual calendar is looming. Planning for the much-anticipated Leyland Festival is well underway. This year’s diary date is Saturday June 16 and the procession theme is World Books. Tickets are on sale now, come and join in, it’s a great family day out. Looking even further ahead, the tireless Leyland Town Team are raising funds for Light Up Leyland, the Christmas Festival which is now firmly established in the town’s psyche.

Two major summer events have been organised to support the cause, with a view to making the ‘Winter Festival’ even bigger and brighter than ever! Following the success of last year’s sponsored walk from Lytham to Leyland, this year the team are inviting participants to join a walk from Burscough Clock to Leyland Clock on Sunday July 8, a scenic route of 16 miles. Full details can be found on page 90. There’s also a ‘Christmas/Summer Ball’ taking place at the prestigious Hallmark Leyland Hotel on Saturday June 30. It’s so called as it’s being staged mid -summer but raising funds for Christmas lights. Drop into Peppermint Cottage on Hough Lane to find out more. We’ve done walking and dancing, how about some cycling? The first stretch of the Leyland Cycle Loop is now open. This links Dunkirk Lane to Longmeanygate and is a safe, free, multi-use track open to cyclists, walkers and horse riders. Plus, there is a potential for the new cycle track to be extended in future so that it links communities across South Ribble – offering a safe route for residents to cycle to and from work, school, and the borough’s leisure facilities. All credit to the Council and the Neighbourhood Forum for delivering this. May is a fun and interesting month with lots to look forward to, enjoy! Keith and Ruth Bradshaw

cheese experience or our caramel sundae with salted caramel ice cream, warm caramel sauce and whipped cream.’…..and there’s more! For starters, nine times out of ten it’s the fishy route for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the Severn and Wye Valley Smoked Trout Fillet - to read it’s a mouthful, to taste it’s even better. Lip-smacking succulent smoked fish, served on a bed of diced new potatoes bound with crème fraiche, diced cucumber and lemon oil. What’s not to like? And across the table? A simply colourful and creative cheese pie - as if! The lightest of warm pastry tartlets packed with a Red Leicester and mature cheese rarebit, garnished with fresh pear and a stunning red pepper puree proved to be the perfect starter. Compliments to the chef all round. Rightly so, it is amongst the best of dining in our region - and better than most. The sumptuous restaurant, with classically themed décor is an impressive venue. ‘…..very clever and a delight to devour…’ A fine piece of pan seared and roasted pork belly was adorned with a thick, ribsticking white bean cassoulet stew - onions, garlic, tomatoes and the tenderest ‘melt-in-the-mouth’ meat. With a side dish of steamed baby carrots and kale it was, indeed, British comfort food with an international twist, very clever and a delight to devour. Two very different main courses, each perfectly crafted and each resulting in empty dishes duly returning to the kitchens. A respectable breather was taken before the inevitable desserts (in the interests of investigative journalism, you understand). Spoilt for choice, I took the advice of our enthusiastic waitress and voted for the lightest of fruit tarts, with custard of course. Perfectly presented and yet another ideal winter warmer. Opposite, the ‘one who doesn’t do desserts’ demolished the creamiest, fruitiest, meringue -packed Eton Mess we have ever seen. Conversation ceased whilst it disappeared with perfect precision and expressions of delight. It was that good! Freshly-brewed coffee, taken back in the restful lounge area, completed our latest visit. It’s fair to say the meal and the occasion, the cuisine and the service, the attention to detail, everything about our

dining experience at the Four Seasons clicked for us. The Hallmark Preston Leyland is perfectly situated, yet unaffected, by Junction 28 of the M6. The restaurant is a not-so-little gem with much to offer. Whether its’ a romantic meal for two, a family outing or any special occasion, talk to the team - give them a try, tell them we sent you.

With a recent impressive refurbishment investment of over £660,000, the hotel’s facilities, particularly the bedrooms, are even more luxurious than ever! There are 13 conference or meeting suites of various sizes, a thriving leisure club with indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna, lots of free parking and an Italian courtyard with a licence to host civil ceremonies. The Hallmark Preston Leyland has a Visit England award for customer service and a Taste of Lancashire award for food and drink - both of which we heartily endorse. It has everything you’d expect and more including the best Christmas parties for miles around!

OCULAR COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY

What is an OCT Scan? OCT deep tissue scanners are one of the latest diagnostic tools available in just some optical practices. These scans achieve high resolution pictures of the structural layers at the back of the eye to help the optometrist determine underlying conditions that you may be unaware of. This service is offered to all of our patients attending the practice during their eye examination. It means the optometrist can look for and diagnose early signs of eye related conditions, for example Age Related

Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, macular holes and many more conditions that can become a sight threatening issue to you. Having regular in-depth OCT scans can help us monitor certain eye related problems too. We do a minimum of 6 scans to make a thorough diagnosis. To book an OCT scan and eye test at Wrights Opticians, or just to talk to us regarding this service, please call today on 01772 424296. We are always happy to answer any questions!

Case Study Another success story!

Our patient came in recently for his routine eye

examination.

On examination, he was offered the scans but was a little reluctant. However, he had the OCT scans, and we are so glad he did! After the optometrist had assessed the scans, our patient was sent immediately to Lytham Eye Clinic to have a procedure to save his sight!

At the beating heart of Leyland with Leyland Market

EVERY self-respecting town has to have a market and Leyland is no exception— indeed, our town has boasted a local market since the 18th century. Having moved from its Towngate location in November 2000 (where Tesco Extra is

sited), the current market is in its fifth location, and is now housed proudly in the former North Works of Leyland Motors, part of the town’s vehicle manufacturing heritage. Manager Paula Halliwell explained: “It’s a small, traditional market with a very loyal customer base. We firmly believe in the principles of live local, shop local and there is something for everyone here. “Leyland Market is at the heart of the town and we are fully involved in community life. We fully support the Town Team and South Ribble Borough Council in their great efforts to improve and promote the town. Also, we participate fully in annual events such as Leyland Festival, Taste of Leyland and Leyland at Christmas. A swift tour of Leyland Market, there are stalls inside and out, and you soon realise what an extensive and amazing array of stalls are available. Deborah Noblett, operator of The Plant Stall is a great advocate of Leyland Market and what’s on offer here. She said: “We have a loyal customer base, with a loyalty card scheme for customers to

participate in a £20 monthly voucher draw. Social Media also plays a role, we use Facebook, Twitter and, more recently, Instagram to promote offers, stalls and community events in the town.” Paula Halliwell added: “All our food stalls, including the café, use locally sourced fresh produce when they can and all have a food hygiene rating of 5. “The Fish Plaice are also one of the few remaining wholesale suppliers of fresh fish straight from Fleetwood Quayside. The Toffee Box use their own recipes for home made confections, including their speciality, sweets for coughs and colds.

“Whittakers Butchers is in its third generation and the Plant Stall and Cheese Cabin are also long –established. Our service stalls include hairdressers, key cutting, phone/tablet repairs and accessories, key cutting, watch strap and battery replacements, along with the traditional clothes, pet food, bags, jewellery, gothic and traditional giftware, tools, lighting, make-up, socks, hats, fruit and vegetables, greeting cards and stationery. “Plus, we have our very own seamstress - Delia Rutlidge has over 30 years’ experience in clothing alterations and is fantastic at what she does.”

‘….something for everyone…’ Leyland’s ever popular market is maintained at full occupancy. 2 Good Soles, Tillys Boutique, The Phone Box, Little Movers Dancewear and The Market Patisserie are all relatively new additions to the bustling market hall. Paula commented: “Our latest addition, Crafty Melts, is owned and operated by Lisa Roberts. She sells hand-made wax melts, bath bombs and room sprays. The aroma as you pass the stall is amazing!” Total Access Bathrooms ‘Before and After’

Lisa Roberts and Crafty Melts

According to a Channel 4 TV documentary last year, South Ribble is officially ‘the best place in the UK to live’ and Leyland Market is at the beating heart of it. For more information about the market please call Paula Halliwell, Market Manager, 01772 623073 or email phalliwell@southribble.gov.uk

An exciting and brand new stall is Total Access Bathrooms. They are a family run company who specialise in the design, supply and installation of all kinds of bathrooms. Whether you are looking for a traditional, modern or easy access bathroom, they can help you!” Leyland Market recently entered the Lancashire Tourism Awards and was shortlisted in the top three for the coveted Retail Experience Award. Although Leyland didn’t win, it was the ONLY Lancashire market to reach the finals, in itself, that is a fantastic achievement. As Paula commented earlier, the unavoidable impression is that Leyland Market genuinely does have ‘something for everyone.’ There is a great ‘family feel’ and sense of community amongst the Leyland Market stallholders, many of whom have been friends for years. The Market is open every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Please mention Leyland Leader when responding to advertisements

Care in Your OWN Home Can you take people out & about? YES.

Transport and companionship services are growing in demand - taking people out and about. Many older people still want to get out and about despite often giving up driving in their 70s. Not everyone wants to use taxis, they prefer to travel with someone they know and want to be accompanied at appointments. All our carers have cars and are fully insured for business to take customers out and about. This is a service in high demand! As people live longer with reasonable health they still want to visit: the supermarket, the garden centre, places of interest such as Derby House/Heskin Hall, a restaurant meal, or health appointments such the opticians, chiropodist, dentist or doctors. Older people often have outpatients’ appointments at local hospitals. These are usually weekdays when relatives, friends or neighbours are unavailable. In recent months we have taken customers to Royal Preston Hospital for eye treatment, Chorley and South Ribble to visit a loved one, Blackpool Victoria for coronary care, and Salford to see a Parkinsons nurse. We are finding that although an appointment may only last 30 minutes the travel, difficulty parking, finding the right department and delayed appointments can mean it extends to 2-3 hours. If a person has difficulty walking we are happy to provide a wheelchair. A person can be supported during their appointment, or the carer can wait outside if the customer wants privacy.

Getting to Know You

Getting to Know You - with Brian Ashman, man of many languages and Director of Leyland Festival Radio. From: Deal, Kent, to Leyland via London, Preston and Accrington. Hero: Choirmaster Gareth Malone, I admire the way he inspires, motivates and encourages people to give of their best. Place to live: Edinburgh - love the cool, fresh air, history, free museums and art galleries, open-on-oneside shopping street, excellent public transport, cultural vibrancy - everything! Fear: Flying or, to be accurate, crashing! I have never flown and probably never will. Family holiday: We used to go on Away Days to Folkestone, our town had few child-friendly facilities so it was a joy to travel on a train, visit amusements, dodgems, wooden motorboats etc. Grandma was a slot machine demon! Changes to myself: The ability to sing then I could join a Garthe Malone choir. Makes me angry: Not much, many things disappoint or sadden me eg: pure self-interest, selfishness, people who take no account of other’s needs, wishes or feelings. Motivation at work: The desire for success and personal fulfilment - when I get the chance, I am motivated by money! Thing about career: Don’t have a career, I’m retired from teaching and largely retired from translation. Thought I was going to be a man of leisure but seem to be busier than ever. Proudest accomplishment: Ongoing storyline of securing a community radio licence for Leyland and getting on air on FM in 2019. Makes me laugh: Count Arthur Strong ‘doyen of light entertainment, raconteur and bon viveur’ (Radio 4 series). Thinking about him makes me smile broadly. The poor man is ‘surrounded by half-wits’ you know! When I was small: As a shy child I wanted to be more extrovert, gregarious and self-confident (I still do!) Favourite sport: I’m allergic to sport. They’re mostly outside in the cold and wet and involve injury risk. Karaoke song: Beautiful Sunday by Daniel Boone happy and cheerful, relatively easy to ‘sing’ without people noticing the flat notes (they should all be singing along). Nickname: As a secondary school teacher years ago, I was nicknamed Hippy Jesus. No idea why! Hobbies: If I had hobby time I might make things out of wood - most of my free time is devoted to the aim of bringing community radio to Leyland.

Super power: Power to stop time, so I could get things done sooner. Lottery win: I’d think carefully how to spend a tenner. Zoo animal: My favourite is the little known (and completely imaginary) wild dogosaurus. Dinner invitations: Jimmy Young - hosted a daily BBC magazine show for over 40 years; Ray Moore - created an imaginary twilight world on early morning radio; Roger Day - veteran Radio Caroline presenter ‘your thinner record spinner’; Tony Allan - (Granada TV, Radio Caroline etc) masterful radio communicator. My radio heroes. Childhood memory: My favourite aunt and uncle lived nearby, we were free to wander in and out or their house anytime - feelings of total welcome and acceptance. Full or empty - Always full, my cup runneth over! Desert Island items (3): Solar powered generator, short wave radio transmitter, tape-recorder with a prerecorded message ‘Help, I’m stuck on a desert island, please come and get me off.’ School subject: German - it was taught in a logical, progressive manner, I knew I could excel in it. First job: a youth hostel in Netherlands, cooking, cleaning, booking in guests, buying supplies etc. I enjoyed talking to guests - I had learnt German at school and taught myself Dutch, which came in handy. Never again: work in a fish processing plant filleting fish. It was impossible to get the smell off clothes, skin and hair. Looking forward to most: Launching FM community radio in Leyland in 2019, lots to do before the launch, but will be wonderful to get things sorted and start broadcasting to a wider audience. www.leylandfestivalradio.com

Don’t Worry Be Happy Money Matters with Greg Heath of Derbyshire Booth Financial Management

How to build a sustainable retirement plan A Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) retirement income study has pointed to some of the issues faced by individuals with pensions who are approaching retirement. One in four Britons regret not starting to save for retirement earlier in life and therefore need to; 1. Take advice As people approach retirement, it is crucial they take advice. The FCA has reported that non-advised people almost always remain with their existing pension provider instead of shopping around. Obtaining professional advice will help secure the best retirement income product to meet a retiree’s needs, balancing their income needs against life expectancy and the need to invest for income, which is very different to investing for growth. 2. Think twice before disinvesting your pension Half of people are taking their pension savings out but not actually spending them. Instead, they are investing the proceeds into other products. This could be in cash, Individual Savings Accounts or buy-to-let properties. These actions will result in them giving up the advantages that pensions offer, such as future tax-free investment growth. Cash is unlikely to produce good long-term returns, and illiquid assets like property present their own risks. Obtaining financial advice will enable people to identify the right approach to investing for their individual needs that match their financial goals in the longer term. 3. Do you need to touch your pension? Pensions are not included in an individual’s estate on death, which means Inheritance Tax of up to 40% will not apply. They used to be subject to a separate ‘pensions death tax’ but this has been removed as part of the pension freedom reforms. Now any unused drawdown funds can be passed on and will be tax-free or taxed at the beneficiaries’ marginal rate of Income Tax. People need to consider whether it would be more tax-efficient to leave their pension invested and use other assets first. 4. Can you afford to retire early? Many people want to retire early, but it is important to ensure that won’t leave an income shortfall later on. A lot of people underestimate how long they will live for. Income requirements are thought to follow a ‘U shape’ in retirement, with the first phase being the most exciting. This is where people start to enjoy retirement, and the risk is that they get carried away with their spending. Spending then tends to fall as people become a

little less active and slow down, but costs may then go up in later life due to health issues, and care may be required. People should have a plan in place to see them all the way through retirement. 5. Don’t rule out an annuity purchase Drawdown has surged in popularity versus annuities. However, before going into drawdown, people should consider which option best suits their needs. For instance, if they cannot afford for their pension to run out, considering an annuity may be more appropriate.. 6. Consider your housing wealth Many people have a good deal of their wealth tied up in their home. Relying on their home in retirement is difficult, and accessing it isn’t always simple. However, it is possible to access that wealth through equity release schemes or downsizing. Source data: [1] Pension Geeks A PENSION IS A LONGTERM INVESTMENT. THE FUND VALUE MAY FLUCTUATE AND CAN GO DOWN, WHICH WOULD HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE LEVEL OF PENSION BENEFITS AVAILABLE. PENSIONS ARE NOT NORMALLY ACCESSIBLE UNTIL AGE 55. YOUR PENSION INCOME COULD ALSO BE AFFECTED BY INTEREST RATES AT THE TIME YOU TAKE YOUR BENEFITS. THE TAX IMPLICATIONS OF PENSION WITHDRAWALS WILL BE BASED ON YOUR INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES, TAX LEGISLATION AND REGULATION, WHICH ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE IN THE FUTURE. YOUR HOME OR PROPERTY MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE

Opportunity Knocks! THERE’S a ‘win-win’ situation literally in the air as FM Community Radio is coming to Leyland and South Ribble. It’s bringing a fantastic opportunity for local businesses and organisations to get involved and become better known. Leyland Community Radio Ltd, with support from members of the business community, was recently successful in its application to Ofcom for an FM licence to broadcast as a volunteer-run community radio station for Leyland and surrounds. Brian Ashman, who currently manages the online Leyland Festival Radio output, explained: “We are now looking for up to 100 local businesses to join our 100 Club. The members will support us in the run-up to our full-scale FM launch in 2019. “While Club membership is primarily a way of demonstrating local support for community radio in Leyland, it will also offer key benefits to the businesses involved.” Benefits will include: • opportunity to show your local community involvement

89

• regular mentions in online (and subsequent FM) programmes, including a brief description of your business • business name on the 100 Club page of the station website • business name on the station Facebook page 100 Club Wall of Fame • priority call on limited on-air advertising and sponsorship space when FM launches in 2019 Brian added: “We will also seek to add other benefits as our ethos is to support local businesses that support us.” The cost of 12 months 100 Club membership with these benefits is just £100. If you would like to apply to join, find out more, or simply become a volunteer, please email Brian Ashman on: leylandcommunityradio@gmail.com

INSIGHT a poem by Ann Hooson I smile when I think of him choosing it. It was a perfect wedding gift by any standard. He would of course ask the assistant for help, listen carefully as she described every detail, drinking in the information, forming a picture in his mind. Then, with the expertise he had acquired over many years, skilfully look with his hands, tracing the outline with

fine, fingered finesse, feeling the smooth curved lines, finding the little shelf, checking the size and the quality - that was always important to him. Satisfied with his findings, he would make the purchase, thank them for their help and leave. Whenever I look into that mirror I often wonder was he reminding us of a more precious gift.
