Leader Comment January 2018 HAPPY New Year, here’s hoping it’s going to be a good 12 months for everyone in our town, businesses, residents, families, one and all. It’s a time for resolutions, looking forward, making plans, packed with hopeful ambitions - good luck with that. Plus, as we ring out the old and welcome the new, it’s a time for reflection on the year past - or is that just me? 2017, are you sad to see it expire or are you simply glad to see the back of it, I wonder? On the plus side, Leyland and South Ribble came out tops in a Channel 4 TV documentary survey which sought to determine the best place in the UK to live. The fact that we are living in ‘the most desirable place in the UK’ is surely cause to celebrate. Looking back, one of the highlights of the past 12 months was the Leyland Festival weekend. Back to its Festival best, the 2017 weekend was blessed with glorious weather and the town rose to the occasion. The weather, the parade, the stalls, games, activities and displays in our award-winning Worden Park were a joy to experience - our congratulations to everyone involved. Leyland Town Team have continued their great work. A fundraising
sponsored walk, Lytham to Leyland, and other unstinting voluntary activities have enabled them to boost the town’s Christmas lights and festivities. The festivities included an even bigger Light Up Leyland Christmas Weekend in November. This time the weather was not so friendly but failed to dampen spirits. Simon Gregson (Steve MacDonald from Corrie) threw the switch and hundreds turned out to enjoy the spectacle - ice rink and snow globe included. The saddest reflection of 2017, of course, was the tragic loss of Saffie Roussos who, at 8 years old, was the youngest victim of the Manchester Arena bombing on May 22. Saffie’s star shone the brightest as Leyland’s poignant tribute to the youngster. Saffie’s dad, Andrew, who formerly owned The Palice on Hough Lane, made gave an emotional thank you to Leylanders for their ongoing support as the family continue to grieve. Whatever your memories of 2017, good or bad - the unveiling of Bobby the Iron Horse was good wasn’t it - we hope your reflections are mostly positive. Meanwhile, we thank all our supportive advertisers and readers as we go into the 13th full year for Leyland Leader. ‘unlucky for some’ - it won’t be - we’re always positive, Happy New Year 2018 everyone, enjoy! Ingredients 2 lean rib-eye or sirloin steaks Salt and freshly-milled black pepper 15ml/1tbsp olive oil 150g/5oz prepared caramelised onion chutney or fruit chutney 30ml/2tbsp warm water 100g/4oz cherry tomatoes, halved 30ml/2tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley For potato and turnip mash: 675g/1½lb potatoes, peeled and diced 375g/12oz turnips, peeled and diced Salt and freshly-milled black pepper 50ml/2floz single cream or milk 25g/1oz butter
2 Heat the oil in a large, non-stick griddle or frying pan, season the steaks and cook according to your preference. Set aside to rest on a warm plate. 3 Meanwhile, add the caramelised onion or fruit chutney to the pan with the water. Simmer for 2-3 minutes stirring occasionally. Add the tomatoes and continue to cook for a further 1-2 minutes. Add the parsley. 4 Serve the steaks with the caramelised onions and tomato sauce, mash or potato wedges and seasonal vegetables or a crisp salad.
Method 1 To prepare the mash; boil the potatoes and turnips for 15-20 minutes, drain, season and mash with the cream or milk and butter.

SERVES 8 easily halved; Preparation 2 Place the peppers in a large, shallow time 10 mins plus marinating; ovenproof pan Cooking time 45 mins Ingredients 800g/1lb 12oz thick boneless, skinless salmon fillet, cut into 8 800g/1lb 12oz thick boneless, skinless cod loin, cut into 8 3 tbsp olive oil Zest and juice 2 oranges 85g/3oz raisins 3 red peppers, halved, deseeded and each cut into 3 3 orange peppers, halved, deseeded and each cut into 3 50g/2oz pine nuts Large handful flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped Method 1 Place the fish in a large bowl, add 2 tbsp of the oil and the orange zest, then season well. Carefully toss the fish to coat, then cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 1-2 hrs. Put the raisins into a small bowl, pour over the orange juice, then set to one side. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6
(approx 35cm diameter) or a large, shallow roasting tin, then drizzle with the remaining olive oil. Season, toss together, then roast in the oven for 30 mins. Toast the pine nuts on a baking tray on another shelf of the oven for 8 -10 mins until golden. 3 Arrange the fish and raisins on top of the peppers, then pour over the juices. Scatter the pine nuts over, season with a good pinch of salt. Cook in the oven for 12-15 mins until the fish is just cooked through. Scatter with parsley and bring to the table.

Well established care company Independent Living, based on Eaves Lane in Chorley, are celebrating after a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) gave the service a “GOOD” rating. The regulator visited the premises in July and conducted a two day detailed inspection. This included scrutinising staff and customer files, and speaking to both staff and customers about how they found the service. They asked questions such as whether the service is safe, caring, responsive to customers’ needs and well led. Owner Mark Booker commented: “I am over the moon with the inspection result but we are a people business and the credit must go to our hardworking carers and office team who provide such a highly rated service. Policies, procedures and paperwork are onerous in care and I am grateful to the team for ensuring they remain up to date. Many of our customers suffer from illnesses such as memory loss, Parkinsons and strokes, so the job is never easy. I am proud of the whole team”. Independent Living was praised in relation to end of life care. Registered Manager Amanda Singleton said: “End of life care is difficult for some carers but our staff find this work rewarding and several families have been impressed with our support” The company’s customers also provided feedback, this included: “staff are caring and considerate”, “our life has completely changed since Independent Living have been involved” and “it’s a high class service, when you ring the office staff deal with everything”. Mark concluded: “Most of our customers are unwell and many are over the age of 80 yet they have taken the time to provide positive comments about the service and company – I feel humbled. That Shrinking Feeling Money Matters with Greg Heath of Derbyshire Booth Financial Management
Milllions of Britons could see their savings shrink because they don’t know how to shield them from rising inflation. The findings are according to research which found more than a third (37%) of people aged 18-65+ are in the dark over ways to grow their savings enough to at least keep up with rising prices. There are a number of different factors that may create inflationary pressure in an economy. Rising commodity prices can have a major impact, particularly higher oil prices, as this translates into steeper petrol costs for consumers. INFLATIONARY PRESSURE - Stronger economic growth pushes up inflation too, as increasing demand for goods and services places pressure on supplies, which may in turn lead to companies raising their prices. The falling pound since Britain’s vote to leave the EU in June last year and the 2017 UK general election result is also contributing to higher inflation in the UK, as it makes the cost of importing goods from overseas more expensive. CONSUMER AWARENESS - Rising inflation is eating away at the nation’s savings, yet the reality is that many people don’t know how to fend it off. A gap in consumer awareness over how some can protect their savings from inflation could mean many people will see their wealth simply drain away. Over the long term, this could threaten to leave people financially worse off in retirement, especially when combined with ultra-low interest rates and stagnant wage growth. Of the 4,000 people surveyed by YouGov, more than a quarter (27%) said they believed property was the best way to outpace inflation. SPENDING POWER - More than one in ten (13%) people thought Cash ISAs could help them maintain their spending power – twice as many as those who said Stocks & Shares ISAs (7%). Just 4% of people said investing in the stock market could help outstrip inflation, while only 3% backed savings invested in a pension. In fact, although they come with greater investment risk, Stocks & Shares ISAs typically offer more protection against inflation than Cash ISAs. RAINY DAY - Cash ISAs are more appropriate to save money for a rainy day but are less suitable for long-term savings, such as for retirement. From this April, the amount people can now shelter taxefficiently
in a Cash ISA has risen to £20,000 a year. With a bigger ISA pot to fill, the danger is that some people will leave more of their long-term savings stuck in cash where they will be eaten away by inflation. LIVING COSTS - Inflation is bad news for savers, as it erodes the purchasing power of your money. Low interest rates also don’t help, as this makes it even harder to find returns which keep pace with rising living costs. Higher inflation can also drive down the price of bonds. These become less attractive because you’re locked in at interest rates that may not keep up with the cost of living in years to come. BETTER PROTECTION - One option is indexlinked gilts, which are government bonds whose interest payments and value at redemption are adjusted for inflation. However, if they are sold before their maturity date, their market value can fall as well as rise and so may be more or less than the redemption value paid at the end of their terms. Investing in equities can potentially provide better protection against inflation than deposit accounts or bonds that aren’t index-linked, because companies can raise prices to cover higher costs, which in theory should enable them to grow at the same rate as inflation over time. However, investing in equities carries a high risk of losses, and you must be prepared to accept that you could get back less than you put in and that the value of your investment may not keep up with inflation. Information is based on our current understanding of taxation legislation and regulations. Any levels and bases of, and reliefs from taxation are subject to change. The value of investments and income from them may go down. You may not get back the original amount invested. Stocks and shares ISA investments do not include the same security of capital that is afforded with a Cash ISA.

All Star Success for Leyland Cricket Academy in 2017
The Leyland Cricket Academy is a respected and successful home for young cricketers in Leyland and surrounding areas in South Ribble. With over 100 juniors playing in 8 teams, we are one of the largest cricket academies in Lancashire, and in 2017 we were delighted to introduce our “All Stars” programme for boys and girls aged
from 5 to 8 years old. We now cater from ages 5 to 17 with many juniors also playing in the four Leyland senior teams on Saturday afternoons in the summer. At the Presentation Evening in September there was much to celebrate at the end of another successful season. Our 32 All Stars were first to receive their certificates and medals, for successfully completing the “introduction to cricket” programme. The Under 10 team narrowly lost in their cup final, and the Under 11 team went through the season undefeated. The Academy is also proud that 26 girl members are fully integrated into all our teams, and play a major part in our success. This year a girls/ladies team was launched to provide an alternative pathway for female cricketers, and they swept the board in their first season, winning the Lancashire Thunder league
and cup double. The Under 13 girls team won their Thunder Cup and the Lady Taverners trophy. More girls are taking up cricket and we are delighted that one of our girl members, toured Barbados with the England Girls squad in September. To further encourage ladies cricket, Leyland hosted its first ever “Prosecco Softball Cricket” night in June with 15 teams of Six-a-side for ladies who had never played before. We have subsequently been informed that our Prosecco night was the most successful event of its kind, not only in Lancashire, but across the whole country. We are proud of our success on the field, but we also strive to uphold the very best values for which cricket is associated, besides providing healthy exercise, good coaching, and most of all a lot of “fun”!
We are particularly grateful for all local business support and for this year in particular, to Leyland Leader in supporting our All Stars programme. And we do not stop. Winter training starts in October and goes through to April 2018, when start all over again! (Phil Heaven)

Award Winning Lancashire Pilot on Cloud Nine
A North West Air Ambulance Charity pilot, who has racked up over 16 years of service, has been celebrated as the UK’s Air Ambulance Pilot of the Year at the industry’s leading awards ceremony. The Association of Air Ambulances (AAA) lauded Captain Neil Airey for his “lifetime of dedication and exemplary service both in and out of the aircraft Neil has worked from North West Air Ambulance’s Blackpool base since 2001, flying the charity’s doctors and paramedics across the North West to help them deliver rapid, urgent pre-hospital care and treatment to needy patients. The AAA’s judges commended Neil’s deftness at flying in challenging conditions and his “unflappability” when facing difficult situations. The AAA awards recognise the pilots, clinicians, fundraisers and volunteers who work tirelessly on behalf of Air Ambulances every day. Praised by judges as an “incredible role model”, Neil has flown and attended over 6,000 missions across the North West region, many involving the rescue of patients in perilous mountain accidents. Captain Airey has also kept the North West Air Ambulance’s helicopters in the air thanks to his fundraising efforts. As a charity which receives no day to day government or National Lottery funding, donations are vital. Neil’s unceasing personal support for the charity was applauded, with judges celebrating his “heart of gold”. Neil said: “I’m honestly blown away by the recognition from the Association. Knowing my part in helping people - often in particularly grave situations - has been recognised, is humbling. “I’ve had an incredibly rewarding career and as I approach retirement next summer, I want to thank my wonderful crew and everyone on the ground at the charity for their unwavering support, and every single one of our generous supporters and donors for keeping myself and the crew in the air over the years. It’s been an honour to fly for the
