Leader Comment February 2020 “In February there is everything to hope for, and nothing to regret,” says Patience Strong. We can live with that, as February provides the bridge between Winter and Spring, days are getting longer, buds and green shoots are appearing - and it’s the month of love, allegedly! At the heart of February, of course, is Valentine’s Day, when love, romance, peace and harmony prevail (forgive my wry smile as I type). Hope all goes well for you, accept our February edition with all good wishes. Congratulations to all at St Andrew’s Parish Church the one that watches over Tesco and beyond. This month the church launches a year of celebrations to mark 800 years of worship in our town. A host of events have been planned as the church family celebrates this landmark - check it out on page 56. Let’s also congratulate all the winners and nominees at the South Ribble Community Awards for 2019. The Borough’s finest teachers, volunteers, community groups and businesses were recognised in January at an awards ceremony highlighting those who ‘consistently go above or beyond their call of duty.’ The annual awards pay tribute to the amazing work of young people, volunteers, people in the community and supporters of those living with dementia, as recipients were announced across 11 different categories. February Leyland Leader went to print before the winners were announced but, with over 200 nominations, we congratulate everyone involved. There is some truly amazing and

inspirational work being carried out. Well done everyone! Congratulations also to Derian House Children’s Hospice, which was recently rated Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission - and has undergone a £1.6m transformation. A ‘fit for the future’ project has re-modelled the Hospice into a state -of-the-art facility, putting it at the pinnacle of children’s palliative care in the UK. The impressive new facilities, including a sensory room, messy play zone and cinema will improve the respite and end-of-life care received by more than 400 children from the region. David Robinson, Chief Executive, said: “Thank you to all of our donors who have made this wonderful refurbishment possible. It’s thanks to their kind donations that Derian House will be able to offer children from across the North West the very best care now and way into the future.” And well done to our own local business network BB4B (Breakfast Before Business) who recently notched up 100 consecutive monthly meetings since starting back in 2011. It really is a friendly effective networking group of local companies, businesses, trades and services - read about them on page 72. Here’s hoping you enjoy and make good use of issue 178, it’s another 88 pages featuring Leyland’s finest. ‘Use them or lose them,’ they say of the High Street, it applies to all your local businesses. We need them - don’t we? Keith and Ruth Bradshaw

Twenty five years - at last! With Towngate Shoe Repairs

LEYLAND’S premier cobbler is celebrating 25 years of his business. Congratulations to genial Craig Statters, the owner and driving force of Towngate Shoes.

When it comes to talking cobblers, Craig’s your man - he’s been at the top of his game, and Towngate Shoes has been successfully serving the people of Leyland for a quarter of a century. Craig explained; “I started as an apprentice cobbler in Preston in 1993. It took three years to

finish my apprenticeship and by 1996 I was installed as manager at 84 Towngate - the business I now own.” Towngate Shoe Repairs had opened in 1994 and within three years, the joint owners decided to dissolve the partnership. This enabled Craig to take over the business and he’s never looked back. Despite the sign above the doors, Craig doesn’t exclusively repair shoes. Since taking over, he has added a whole range of skills and services. These include key cutting, engraving, trophies for schools and sports clubs, watch batteries and straps and equestrian tack repairs. He’s a very useful man to know! A traditional time served cobbler, a master craftsman, here’s to the next 25 years, well done Craig!

A big year celebrating 800 years of worship in Leyland

St Andrew’s Church is celebrating 800 years of a church, situated on the same Church Road site we see today, being part of our community in Leyland. 2020 is a very special year for St Andrew’s and the folks there want to celebrate and reach out to the community.

During 2020 there will be the opportunity to view the church where a guide will be able to show all the history. We are told dynamite was once used to blow out the sides of the church in order to make the church building bigger. Is this fact or fiction ? Come on one of the heritage tours on in March or September to find out. Popular Australian Christian entertainer Colin Buchanan will be live in concert in church on April 15. On May 8 the whole country celebrates 75 years since VE day and to mark this occasion St Andrew’s has organised a VE Day – Songs of Praise evening accompanied by the award-winning Leyland Band. On July 2 at 7:30pm there is an evening with Jeremy Marshall, a former Chief Executive of one of the large private banks in the city of London, who is suffering from Cancer. He has written a book ‘Beyond the Big C.’ If you have been touched by issues with cancer or know someone who has, then this is the event for you. A heritage bike ride is planned for September 5 starting from St Andrew’s and visiting all the churches in the area St Andrew’s has planted. The Bishop of

Burnley, the Rt Rev Philip North, has agreed to take part. If you want to know if a Bishop cycles with his cassock on, come along to the heritage bike ride. Professional wrestling with a mission returns to St Andrew’s on October 3. Grappler Gareth Thompson, is about to mount a successful return to the St Andrew’s church arena to take on members of the Lancashire Wrestling Federation. All these events lead up to a week of outreach starting Monday October 12. St Andrew’s is organising a full week of events for all ages and daily mid-week seminars focusing on life issues. On Saturday evening October 17, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, formerly of Leeds Rhinos Rugby League club, is returning to St Andrew’s church for what is guaranteed to be an entertaining evening. On Sunday 18th October The outreach week will culminate on Sunday October 18 with all services being guest services. The 6:30pm evening service will provide the final focus for the week. Plans are already underway for a final ‘800 Years celebration’ in November. This will be a Gala event to ‘round off the year in style’. For more details visit www.standrewsleyland.org.uk/800years or ring St Andrews’s church office on 01772 622964 during weekdays.

Recipe of the Month sponsored by Whittakers Butchers Serves 6 generously; Prep 15mins plus sitting time; Cook 4 hrs For the beef 1.5kg/3lb 5oz braising steak in one big piece 50g/2oz butter 2 tbbsp olive oil 2 celery sticks, cut into chunks 2 carrots, cut into chunks 3 garlic cloves 1 large onion, cut into chunks 5 cloves 2 bay leaves 10 black peppercorns 1tsp sea salt 300ml bottle dark beer For the Salsa Salad 12 ripe tomatoes, halved, de-seeded and chopped 1 large red onion, thinly sliced ½-1 Scotch bonnet chilli, de-seeded and finely chopped Bunch radishes, coarsely grated Small bunch coriander Juice 4 lime, 4 lemons 4tbsp olive oil Method

in a large, heavybottomed pan; when butter is foaming, add the beef. Brown on all sides, then remove from the pan. When the fat is hot again, add the vegetables and brown these too. Put the beef back into the pan with all the other beef ingredients, then pour in enough water to just cover the meat. 2 Cover tightly with greaseproof paper and a lid, then place in oven for 4hrs or until the beef is tender and falling apart. Cool in its liquid (the liquid will have become a lovely beef stock that you can freeze to make soup another day) then shred into bite-size pieces using two forks. 3 To make the salad, mix the tomatoes, onion, chilli, radishes and coriander in a large bowl. Whisk together the lime juice, orange juice, olive oil and some seasoning, then let the salad sit for 15 mins for the flavours to infuse. Serve the beef tossed into the salad.

Have you heard about SLEAP?

Support, Lodgings & Emergency Accommodation for Young People SLEAP is a local charity seeking to provide young people with somewhere safe to live, giving them the support they need to move on as confident and independent young adults. We place young people in local homes. They get a bedroom in a real home, with supportive, caring adults, helping them adjust, learn how to look after themselves and are around to chat. Host families are paid rent for their room and are trained and supported by the SLEAP team. SLEAP’s youth workers provide extra support helping young people get back into education or training, find jobs, sort out issues around debt, health, relationships and more. SLEAP also works with young people who are not staying with us but that may need help to sort aspects of their life that may place them at risk of becoming homeless (job applications, work experience, benefits, settling into accommodation, help to avoid family breakdown). Really special are the monthly group activities. These sessions help combat isolation, build positive relationships with peers, gain new skills and promote better physical and mental wellbeing. We visit the beach, or trampoline centre, perhaps a food & hygiene certificate or have a ‘bake off’. Recently we did some painting and gardening at Buckshaw Retirement Village. They enjoyed it so much they are doing the Dementia Friends training so they can go back and run fun sessions with residents. SLEAP is 27 years old, it started in 1992 when clergy and people from different churches in Leyland started talking about the need to help homeless young people. There

were no projects around then, it wasn’t uncommon for desperate people to turn up at churches or clergy homes asking for help, nowhere to go. The Leyland Churches Homelessness Project was born with a group of volunteers who provided emergency accommodation in homes on a ‘B&B’ basis. In 1995 this project became a registered charity, SLEAP, with trustees representing different churches across Leyland. SLEAP is a Christian organization. Our Christian faith inspires the values we choose, the service we provide and the needs we respond to. The Bible challenges us to love with actions and not just with words and to live with hope even in the face of despair. This is why we do what we do in the way that we do it. Providing a safe home with a helping hand for a confident future – This is our mission and there’s many ways in which you can get involved and help eg: food or toiletries donations (we distribute food parcels to young people we support). You can fundraise for us or send a donation. You can volunteer (helping with group work, office help, sharing skills). You could become a Trustee. If you have a spare bedroom, perhaps think being a host family? If you pray, please pray for us. Pray for our work, the young people we support and the resources we need to help more. We’re a friendly bunch at SLEAP and we’d love to hear from you. If you’d like to know more or know someone who may need our help, call 01772 623603. Our website is being updated but you can follow us on Facebook @SLEAPLancashire or on Twitter @SLEAP_lancs.

Landmark ‘ton up’ for local networking group A LEYLAND business networking group, having met monthly for over eight years, is celebrating a century of successful breakfast meetings. BB4B – Breakfast Before Business - recently held their 100th consecutive meeting. And that’s a lot of breakfasts, if not business! BB4B began in September 2011 and over 100 gatherings later, has welcomed countless local business leaders through the doors. The group is organised and run by Keith and Ruth Bradshaw, owners of local business magazine Leyland Leader. Keith explained: “The idea of an informal networking group grew out of a business breakfast that I organised during a Mission Week at St Andrew’s Parish Church in Leyland. Several business contacts I had came along and the idea of meeting regularly took off. “For several years we met every month in the church, for business networking purposes, and the group has grown from strength to strength. We now meet at Leyland Golf Club, an ideal location where we are very well catered for, in every sense, by restaurant proprietor Vince Slater. Many BB4B group ‘members’ – there are no official joining fees or membership forms to fill in - have attended loyally for years and, having become firm friends, offer mutual support and lots of business is carried out. Ruth Bradshaw added: “We see ourselves as a friendly, informal yet very effective networking group. There are lots of laughs, but at the same time, serious business networking takes place. “Over time, we have held several social events, including Christmas parties and a Summer Charity Ball. Plus, we raise money for local causes and support Leyland Food

Bank every month.” BB4B meetings last an hour, breakfast comes first and is followed by a prize draw. A member then takes time to highlight their own business or organisation. Each guest is also given time to explain briefly who they are and what they do – there are always ‘new’ people at each gathering. Andy Prosser, owner of Enterprize Web Design and Print, said: “It’s great to be part of such an awesome business network, and to have got to know so many business leaders over the last five years.” Tina Russell, owner of Tasty Business, gave a presentation (with cake) at the centenary meeting, adding: “I really enjoy being part of the BB4B local business community and knowing so many great people.” The monthly meetings are usually held on the first Friday of each month, for more information about BB4B, contact Ruth Bradshaw via ruthbrad@uwclub.net.

Shrove Tuesday - What’s It All About? February 25 2020

PANCAKES – don’t you just love ‘em? Crispy, sweet or savoury, thick or thin, the very thought makes your mouth water. Pancakes are eaten all-year round, but one date in the Christian calendar is always associated with this delicacy. ‘Pancake Day,’ or Shrove Tuesday as it is officially known is a tradition that’s been observed for a 1000 years or more. So what’s it all about? Shrove Tuesday derives from the Christian practice of shriving whereby a believer receives absolution for confessing their sins. It's not only a day of penitence, but also a great day of celebration and merry-making. It was party-time – it still is in many parts of the world! Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to feast before Ash Wednesday signalled the first day of Lent. Traditionally, Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is a time to indulge, using up foods that aren't allowed in Lent. In the past, observers of Lent might refrain from eating a whole range of foods such as meat, fish, fats, eggs, cheese and milk. Families ‘celebrated’ the arrival of Lent with a feast that consumed all supplies that wouldn’t last the forty days of Lent. Pancakes became associated with this as they are a simple dish which uses up all the milk, eggs and fats with just the addition of flour – and could be served in many different ways. Like Easter, Shrove or Pancake Tuesday is a moveable feast. It usually falls in late February, but occasionally is celebrated in March. This year it falls on the last day of February and will be recognised throughout the world.

In Italy, it is called Carnivale – the origins of our word carnival – coming from the Latin meaning ‘goodbye to the meat.’ Germans know the festival as Fasnacht or ‘night of the fast.’ Perhaps the most famous alternative is the French Mardi Gras, which translates as ‘Fat (or grease) Tuesday.’ The most famous Mardi Gras celebrations are associated with New Orleans or Rio de Janeiro. This year’s processions in Louisiana will be especially poignant as the first Mardi Gras since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. In England, no Shrove Tuesday would be complete without pancake tossing and racing, the origins of which go back to the 15th century. A housewife in Olney, Buckinghamshire is reputed to have lost track of time whilst preparing pancakes on Shrove Tuesday 1445. Summoned by the bell’s tolling, she raced to church, clutching her frying pan and wearing her apron. The village is now world famous for its annual pancake races. In Scarborough, on the North Yorkshire coast, communal skipping ringing the pancake bell are part of the Pancake Day merry-making. There are many traditions and superstitions attached to Shrove Tuesday. It’s significance has changed with time but religious festival or not, one constant remains – it’s a great excuse to pick up the frying pan and serve up a feast. Get out the eggs and have a cracking time!

In the Garden

A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market February has arrived and things are starting to appear in the garden, snowdrops and daffodils are peeping through that means signs of springtime are on the way.

If you didn’t get round to planting snowdrop bulbs, now is a good time to split any clumps of snowdrops whilst they are, “in the green” and re-distribute them around the garden, taking care not to damage any bulbs. If you buy bulbs they are so small they tend to get lost or split up when you’re gardening, and can take several years to produce flowers. If you want to buy any, now is the time to buy them in the green. If you’re wanting to plant any Spring flowering pots, there are plenty of planted bulbs around like tulips and tête-à-tête daffodils, which go well with primulas, violas and pansies. Ivy makes a trailing feature and Spring/ Summer flowering heathers make a good contrast, with miniature conifers to add

height. These can be transplanted into your garden and replaced with summer bedding later on, or can be left in and planted round. Always check the compost you are using, to see if it’s suitable for what you want to plant. Azaleas, heathers, rhododendrons and hydrangeas are all acid loving plants and need ericaceous compost. Although I know of people who have used a cheaper multi-purpose compost and they have been ok.

If your garden isn’t too wet and you intend to grow some vegetables you could prepare the beds by digging over, weeding and making furrows. Sow vegetable plants indoors ready for transplanting as young plants, and early potatoes can be spread out to chit. Winter flowering shrubs can be trimmed back if they’ve finished flowering and the heads can be taken off hydrangeas. That should keep you busy for now. Let’s move forward with a “Spring” in our step, because there are sure signs it’s on it’s way, despite all the wet weather we’ve been having.

Memories - a poem by Ann Hooson

When next you hear the stories folks tell of days gone by don’t roll your eyes and mutter or move off with a sigh. Don’t mimic them by saying “I’ve heard it all before.” “You got a year’s supply of fish and chips for only one and four.” If you never sat in Winter by a flickering, cosy fire and held some bread towards it on a toast fork made of wire or raised your eyes in wonder as a child in a big shop as your money, in a little box moved on a wire to an office at the top.

Indulge them with their memories, there may become a day when you wish to tell your grandchild of the places you once played. To describe to them a garden or a meadow by a stream and shake yourself to re-call if it was just a dream. So treasure them and tend them, treat them with greatest care, then they may not be your memories, they may just still be there.
