Is there an autism epidemic? With Lynn McCann of ReachOut ASC
What do Ann Hegarty of The Chase, Chris Packham from Springwatch, Susan Boyle and Robert White from Britain’s Got Talent got in common? They are all autistic. Celebrities are coming out as autistic all over the place. Many more children and adults have been
diagnosed as autistic especially in the last 10 years and we are hearing the ‘autism’ word on TV more and more. But we don’t really have an epidemic. Autism has always been part of humankind, but we have simply got better at recognising and diagnosing it. And in the last few years we’ve discovered that it isn’t just a male condition, there have been many more autistic females than we realised because we have learned how autism can present differently in females. Autism is characterised by being a different way the brain thinks, perceives and processes experiences and information from the senses. It is a spectrum, where every person on that spectrum is different but share some of the characteristics that are in the diagnostic criteria. One of my autistic friends explains it well: “Autism is a different way of thinking and processing, especially sensory experiences. As common as being lefthanded and just as misunderstood is that used to be.” Autistic people have a lot of gifts to offer our world and certainly have done for
centuries. Many autistic people’s inventions, insights and perspectives have helped mankind become what it is today. However, autistic people do have some difficulties, and some can have other conditions or a learning disability as well as autism. That’s why it is identified as a disability. The diagnostic criteria looks at differences and difficulties in communication, social interaction, ways of thinking and processing (including intense interests) and sensory processing. Reachout ASC is a Leyland based company of autism specialists, working across the whole North West. Lynn and Emma are autism specialist teachers, Ruth is a sensory therapist and Cristina is autistic. Together we bring a wealth of experience and knowledge that we use to equip, advise and resource anyone who wants to understand and support autistic children, young people and adults. We work with schools across Lancashire, local
businesses, churches and charities. We do this job because we’re passionate about making school and life successful for autistic children and young people. We believe that autistic people have a right to live in society that understands them. To live in a society that makes adaptations to enable them to access education, health services, jobs and their community.

Favourite sport to watch or play: Crown Green Bowling or Squash Karaoke song: it would have to be at gunpoint with the imminent threat of death! It’s not that I can’t sing, it’s the Karaoke concept I can’t bear. The idea of being in a confined space listening to random people murdering songs is a personal hell! Hobbies: long country walks, listening to music, reading a good book in the sunshine by a pool, gardening. Superpower of choice: the power to end cruelty and unkindness Lottery win: It’s never going to happen as I will never enter it! Favourite zoo animal: I feel ambivalent

towards zoos, but watching primates is utterly fascinating. Childhood memory: Playing on the beach at Aberdaron, North Wales on family holiday. Glass half full or half empty: I am an eternal optimist - always half full. Desert island items: a computer with internet connection (I need to keep up with the news, listen to music, and continue to learn more about the world); the Bible, for inspiration and re-assurance Favourite school subject: English—without any doubt! There were no wrong answers and I could already speak it! First job: Gardening and grounds maintenance, I couldn't believe I was paid to do something I loved doing anyway. 4 Add the capers and simmer together for a couple of minutes, then remove from heat and stir in crème fraiche and tarragon, cover and set aside. 5 Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a non-stick frying pan. Score the salmon skins with a sharp knife, season all over. Place fillets skinside down in the hot oil, leave for 3 minutes, or until skins are nice and crispy. Carefully turn fillets over, remove pan from heat. Method: 6 Allow salmon to cook in the residual heat 1 Heat butter in a large saucepan. Add leeks of the pan for 4 minutes then serve and salt cook gently until almost tender. immediately with the sauce in the bottom of 2 Place potato pieces in another saucepan each bowl with a slice of salmon on top. with the stock, bring to the boil. 3 When tender, add potato stock to the Leyland Market softened leeks. Time to bring your investments together?
If you have accumulated a number of Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) over the years, keeping them all in one place could give you better control and help you save money. There’s a common misconception that you can’t move your existing ISAs from one provider to another. Transferring your ISAs doesn’t affect its tax-efficient status, but you should make sure that you don’t have to pay penalties or give up valuable benefits. If you want to switch from an existing ISA provider to a new one, you’re perfectly within your rights to do so. Much like a mortgage, you shouldn’t feel as though you’re saddled forever with your first ISA provider choice. Transferring your ISAs could allow you to widen your range of investment choices, as the range on offer can differ between providers. EASIER TO MONITOR AND MANAGE Another reason to switch is that you could find you’re better off because another provider is offering lower fees and charges. You may also want to move because you prefer to keep all your investments conveniently in one place, where they’re easier to monitor and manage. You can transfer your ISA from one provider to another at any time. You can also transfer from one type of ISA to a different type of ISA – for example, you can move money held in a Stocks & Shares ISA into a Cash ISA, or from a Cash ISA to a Stocks & Shares ISA. Similarly, money held in an Innovative Finance ISA can be transferred into a Stocks & Shares ISA or into a Cash ISA.

It is not advisable to transfer from a Lifetime ISA. Transferring your ISAs won’t affect their tax-efficient status, provided you follow the correct process. You might think that to make a transfer from one ISA to another, you’ll need to close down your existing account, make a withdrawal, then open up a new account and pay in. But closing down your current ISA means you’ll immediately lose all the tax benefits, so never withdraw your savings to pay into a new ISA. ADDITIONAL PERMITTED ISA ALLOWANCE Instead, if you want to make a transfer, we’ll contact your provider to inform them and manage the entire transfer process for you. Remember that tax rules can change in future, and their effect on you will depend on your individual circumstances. If you are looking to transfer ISA tax benefits following the death of your spouse or registered civil partner, the survivor can now inherit their ISA tax benefits. This will be in the form of an additional permitted allowance equal to the value of the ISA at the holder’s death and will be in addition to your own ISA allowance.

Recipe of the Month sponsored by Whittakers Butchers Serves 4: prep 20mins, cook 2hrs 45mins Ingredients: 450g/1lb braising or stewing steak, cut into 2.5cm/1 inch cubes 225g/8oz ox kidney cored cut in small cubes 15ml/1tbsp sunflower oil 1 onion, peeled and sliced 100g/4oz chestnut mushrooms, quartered 15ml/1tbsp plain flour 450ml/¾ pint good, hot beef stock 1 sachet bouquet garni 200ml/7floz stout or brown ale Salt and pepper 500g/1lb 2oz prepared shortcrust pastry 1 egg, beaten Method: 1 Heat oil in large casserole dish and cook the beef for 3-4 minutes until brown. 2 Add onion and mushrooms, cook for 4-5 minutes until coloured. Add kidneys, cook for 1-2 minutes. Sprinkle over the flour. 3 Add the stock, bouquet garni, stout and seasoning. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat, cover and cook for 2 hours until the meat is tender. Remove the bouquet garni and spoon

Transport and companionship services are growing in demand - taking people out and about. Many older people still want to get out and about despite often giving up driving in their 70s. Not everyone wants to use taxis, they prefer to travel with someone they know and want to be accompanied at appointments. All our carers have cars and are fully insured for business to take customers out and about. This is a service in high demand! As people live longer with reasonable health they still want to visit: the supermarket, the garden centre, places of interest such as Derby House/Heskin Hall, a restaurant meal, or health appointments such the opticians, chiropodist, dentist or doctors. Older people often have outpatients’ appointments at local hospitals. These are usually weekdays when relatives, friends or neighbours are unavailable. In recent months we have taken customers to Royal Preston Hospital for eye treatment, Chorley and South Ribble to visit a loved one, Blackpool Victoria for coronary care, and Salford to see a Parkinsons nurse. We are finding that although an appointment may only last 30 minutes the travel, difficulty parking, finding the right department and delayed appointments can mean it extends to 2-3 hours. If a person has difficulty walking we are happy to provide a wheelchair. A person can be supported during their appointment, or the carer can wait outside if the customer wants privacy.

What makes me angry: Injustice, misuse of power, unwillingness to tackle the root causes of poverty. What motivates you to work hard: The sense of call, vocation, serve and minister communicate how much people are loved and are precious. Favourite zoo animal: Elephants, I’ve always been fascinated by these glorious creatures. Dinner invitations: Martin Luther King Jr, Simon Peter (Jesus’ disciple), Agatha Christie, Kenny Dalglish (right) - an extremely odd mix!! Childhood memory: Holding my sister and brother (twins) when they were tiny, I’m six years older than them. Glass half full or empty: Often overflowing, but always at least half full. Desert Island items: My Bible, my guitar and a photograph of my family. Favourite school subject: French and Latin First job: seasonal hotel work, waiting on then involved with entertainments. What would you never do again: Go on an all day sea voyage whale and dolphin spotting without taking heavy duty seasick medication. A never to be repeated day! Looking forward to in the future: Liverpool FC winning their first Premier League trophy and the eternity with Jesus, with so many I long to see again, which He has promised and made possible.

St Andrews says ‘Farewell’
IT was an emotional morning at Leyland Parish church when the vicar Reverend Canon David Gibb and wife Claire stepped down after 17 years.
St Andrews was packed as all four congregations came together in a joint farewell service marking the end of a significant era in the life of the centuries old church. David and Claire Gibb, along with daughters Rebekah, Hannah and Esther arrived in Leyland in July 2001 from Oxford. He explained: “I was only 32 years old then, it was my first parish and all seemed quite daunting and challenging – especially as I am a ‘Southern softie’ and didn’t speak the way the locals spoke. From day one, though, we knew it was right for us, everyone made us welcome. There is a wonderful team here, we get tremendous support, I am so grateful for everyone who has helped us along the way.” Associate vicars Matt Cook and Duncan Bell led the joint service, reflecting upon and paying tribute to the Gibbs and their 17 year long ministry. Gifts were presented during the Thanksgiving Service and St Andrews Children’s Worker Katy Turner paid particular tribute to Claire Gibb’s unstinting efforts in teaching, organising and serving the
children and young people of the parish. In his last sermon as vicar of Leyland, Mr Gibb fittingly turned to the Revelation, the last book of the Bible. As ever, he directed his listeners to the cross of Jesus, adding: “It’s been a real privilege to serve here, we have had some wonderful times, there has been sadness too, but much joy too. “The church has grown and we have seen many changes. We will take away with us countless wonderful memories of our times here, I will particularly remember the successful Mission Weeks we have held. I have seen many people turn to Christ in our time, Leyland and its people will forever be in our hearts.”
Reverend Gibb admitted that his health had suffered in recent times and though he was stepping aside with a heavy heart, he knew the time was right to move on. Church wardens Karen Swift and Paul Moran are now tasked as Church of England ‘sequestrators’ as they begin the process of appointing a new vicar. Keith Bradshaw
