OCT can identify this and monitor progress carefully and efficiently. “It also detects conditions such as diabetes and the risks of developing glaucoma - which affects around two in

every 100 people over the age of 40. The danger with chronic glaucoma is that there is no pain and your eyesight will seem to be unchanged, but your vision is being damaged. The OCT examination enables us to monitor and treat that.” OCT scanning can also detect holes in the macular—the part of the retina responsible for our sharp, detailed, central vision. It can also locate detachments at the back of the retina which, in many cases are painless but damaging to the eye. There is a charge for an OCT screening, but the benefits are obvious. Primarily, it brings the peace of mind that comes from knowing your eyes are in great condition. Sarah says: “OCT screening is available to everyone, please call to discuss or book an appointment.”

44 Talking to your children about your Lasting Power of Attorney With one in three people over 65 developing dementia, appointing a Lasting Power of Attorney in case you are unable to manage your affairs should be something we all consider. In any event, your children need to know your plans even if they won’t act as your representative – but how do you have that conversation? What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? In short, it is someone who is authorised to make decisions on your behalf if you are unable to make those decisions for yourself. There are two types of LPA. One looks after your health and welfare and the other looks after your financial affairs. The health and welfare attorney can only make decisions when you don’t have the capacity to make them yourself. The financial attorney’s powers can be used whilst you still have capacity, with your authority. Why do I need to appoint one? If you are unable to make decisions about your health, welfare and finances and you don’t have an LPA in place, your loved ones may be unable to make any important decisions about your future care or finances. Ultimately the court could appoint a stranger to make these decisions, such as a social worker or a solicitor. Anna-Marie Knipe is a partner at Birchall Blackburn law and an expert in Private Client legal services for the elderly. She says: “Many people wrongly assume that their spouse or family members will automatically be their Lasting Power of Attorney. If you lose mental capacity and are without an LPA, loved ones will not have the necessary automatic legal rights be able to access your money for your care, nor make decisions about your treatment.” Why do I need to talk to my children about this? Talking to your children about the possibility

that you may become unable to make your own decisions is difficult. But it is essential that they know what arrangements you have put in place should this happen. The nature of the conversation can be Anna-Marie Knipe upsetting but, by setting time aside to discuss your plans openly and calmly, can really help. Who should I appoint as my attorney? You may want to appoint one or more of your children, a good friend or family member or a professional like a solicitor or accountant. The most important thing is that you choose somebody reliable and trustworthy. You can also appoint someone of your own age such as your spouse. In this case, you should make it clear who should step in if they become unable to act for you. I don’t have to think about this yet do I? If you are fit and healthy, it may seem a little premature thinking about an LPA. But should you unexpectedly become unable to make your own decisions, it will be too late. Anna-Marie says: “Rest assured that you don’t suddenly give up control when you appoint a Lasting Power of Attorney. You decide whether it comes into effect before you lose mental capacity, or only in that event.” Making provisions for your own affairs is a sensitive subject. Providing for your loved ones and retaining some control over your situation can offer peace of mind to you and your family. Will the Pension Reforms affect Retirement Planning? Money Matters with Derbyshire Booth Financial Management Ltd

Just under a third (30%) of people believes the recent pension reforms will affect their plans for retirement income. Responding to a Schroders survey, of the people who said pension reforms will affect retirement, a significant proportion (45%) said they are likely to consider taking some money as cash and put the balance in an investment fund. Cash is king Another plan is to invest in an income fund, and 23% said they are looking to keep the money in cash. 29% are planning to put the money towards a luxury purchase, such as a dream holiday, and 28% said they would use the money to pay off their or their family’s debts [1]. Understanding the changes The remaining 70% who did not think the reforms will affect their retirement income planning gave varied reasons for this. 20% said this was due to worrying about taxation issues, and 31% said it was down to not knowing what decisions to make and not fully understanding the changes. 11% admitted they didn’t have a pension. Good financial planning Surprisingly, only 30% believe the new UK pension reforms will have an effect on their retirement planning. This seems to be due to wide-ranging confusion about the tax implications and the choices available to them. For example, you need to plan who inherits your pension. With more money able to be passed on, it’s never been more important to plan whom you’d like to inherit it. What’s not always well known, however, is that your Will doesn’t usually control who inherits your pension. That final, crucial decision is down to your pension provider,

who makes reference to who is named on your Beneficiary Nomination form. If you don’t have this in place, your pension savings may not go to the person, or people, you wanted it to. Furthermore, the investment possibilities for pre- and post-retirement are extensive, and it’s important for people to understand what it means for them. Good financial planning and advice are essential. With the commencement of the pension reforms, now is the perfect time to discuss your requirements. Serves 4: Preparation time: 12 mins plus 30 mins chilling; Cooking time; 1 hour Ingredients 2 tbsp sunflower oil 450g/1lb leftover cooked turkey meat, diced 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped 225g/8oz chestnut mushrooms, quartered 1 tbsp cornflour 150ml/Âźpt chicken stock 250ml/9fl oz apple juice 2 tbsp tomato puree Salt and pepper 250g/9oz chilled puff pastry Beaten egg, to glaze Method Heat oil in large frying pan, add pepper and mushrooms, fry for 5 mins. Mix cornflour with stock until smooth, pour into pan with the apple juice. Add tomato puree and bring to boil, stir until thickened and smooth. Stir cooked turkey into pan, season with salt and pepper, cover and simmer gently for 10 mins. Allow to cool. Drain turkey and vegetables from pan, reserving the cooking sauce, and spoon into

a 1.1litre/2pt pie dish or individual pie dishes. Roll out pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to cover the pie. Cut any pastry trimmings into leaves, dampen and press on top. Chill for 30 mins. Preheat oven to 00C/400F/ Gas 6. Brush pastry with beaten egg to glaze and stand pie on a baking sheet. Bake for 40-45 mins until pastry is puffed and golden brown (25 mins for individual pies). Heat the remaining sauce.

Serve the pie hot with vegetables and the cooking sauce.

A fitting tribute….

A STUNNING tribute to South Ribble’s fallen heroes has been officially unveiled. The war memorial in Lostock Hall, which remembers 686 men who died serving their country in the Great War, was dedicated in a moving ceremony on Armistice Day. The service was attended by families of the men and some of Lancashire’s highestranking dignitaries. Led by Mayor of South Ribble Councillor Mary Green, the service included readings by Vice Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire Colonel Alan Jolley and Wellfield High School head girl Chloe Juniper. Wreaths were laid and bugler Darryl Cartwright (Royal British Legion) played The Last Post. The poignant ceremony was closed by the City of Preston Pipes and Drums.

“The service was incredibly humbling,” said Councillor Green. “These men made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and it was wonderful to see civic leaders from across the county coming together and paying their respects. We wanted to create the best memorial ever and I very much hope it becomes a South Ribble landmark.” Standing 40ft tall near to the Stanifield Lane roundabout, the monument serves as a poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice that brave men and their families made for our freedom. Although more than 50 separate war memorials exist around the borough, the new monument is the first borough-wide memorial. Research into the names was carried out by local historian Charlie O’Donnell, who has spent 18 months trawling through military records, archives and old photographs to

trace the men. “The sacrifice these men and their families made during the war is absolutely massive. There’s not one family in the borough that wasn’t touched during that period,” said Charlie, of Bamber Bridge. “This will be the first time these men’s names will be gathered all in one place. Local people can see their ancestors being remembered and pass on their stories to the younger generation.” The memorial, designed by South Ribble Borough Council officers in collaboration with design and fabrication company DP Structures in Nelson, was craned into place and welded together on-site earlier this month. It is made of a thick steel alloy with a rusted appearance, with a cut-out silhouette of a soldier with head bowed, a large poppy, and the word ‘remember’ inscribed upon it. Inscribed inside, visible to those standing in the peace garden behind the memorial, are the soldiers’ names, including Bamber Bridge’s Corporal John McNamara, who was awarded the Victoria Cross. The memorial and peace garden will form part of the greater St Catherine’s Park, due to be opened to the public in summer 2016, in a joint project between South Ribble Borough Council and St Catherine’s Hospice. Stephen Greenhalgh, Chief Executive of St Catherine’s Hospice, said: “Over 30 years, St Catherine's Hospice has been inspired by local people for local people. This WW1 memorial project epitomises our remembrance of the ultimate sacrifice that so many made a century ago.”
