The group recently set up an exhibition in a temporary Heritage Centre on Hough Lane, a project which attracted thousands of visitors. Congratulations to the small but dedicated group (including Elvis) which walked the many miles, in a heatwave, from Burscough Clock to Leyland Clock, raising hundreds of pounds for the ‘Light Up Leyland’ appeal. OCULAR COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY

What is an OCT Scan? OCT deep tissue scanners are one of the latest diagnostic tools available in just some optical practices. These scans achieve high resolution pictures of the structural layers at the back of the eye to help the optometrist determine underlying conditions that you may be unaware of. This service is offered to all of our patients attending the practice during their eye examination. It means the optometrist can look for and diagnose early signs of eye related conditions, for example Age Related

Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, macular holes and many more conditions that can become a sight threatening issue to you. Having regular in-depth OCT scans can help us monitor certain eye related problems too. We do a minimum of 6 scans to make a thorough diagnosis.

To book an OCT scan and eye test at Wrights Opticians, or just to talk to us regarding this service, please call today on 01772 424296. We are always happy to answer any questions!

Case Study Another success story!

Our patient came in recently for his routine eye

examination.

On examination, he was offered the scans but was a little reluctant. However, he had the OCT scans, and we are so glad he did! After the optometrist had assessed the scans, our patient was sent immediately to Lytham Eye Clinic to have a procedure to save his sight!

Care in Your OWN Home Can you take people out & about? YES.

Transport and companionship services are growing in demand - taking people out and about. Many older people still want to get out and about despite often giving up driving in their 70s. Not everyone wants to use taxis, they prefer to travel with someone they know and want to be accompanied at appointments. All our carers have cars and are fully insured for business to take customers out and about. This is a service in high demand! As people live longer with reasonable health they still want to visit: the supermarket, the garden centre, places of interest such as Derby House/Heskin Hall, a restaurant meal, or health appointments such the opticians, chiropodist, dentist or doctors. Older people often have outpatients’ appointments at local hospitals. These are usually weekdays when relatives, friends or neighbours are unavailable. In recent months we have taken customers to Royal Preston Hospital for eye treatment, Chorley and South Ribble to visit a loved one, Blackpool Victoria for coronary care, and Salford to see a Parkinsons nurse. We are finding that although an appointment may only last 30 minutes the travel, difficulty parking, finding the right department and delayed appointments can mean it extends to 2-3 hours. If a person has difficulty walking we are happy to provide a wheelchair. A person can be supported during their appointment, or the carer can wait outside if the customer wants privacy.

At the beating heart of Leyland with Leyland Market

EVERY self-respecting town has to have a market and Leyland is no exception— indeed, our town has boasted a local market since the 18th century. Having moved from its Towngate location in November 2000 (where Tesco Extra is

sited), the current market is in its fifth location, and is now housed proudly in the former North Works of Leyland Motors, part of the town’s vehicle manufacturing heritage. Manager Paula Halliwell explained: “It’s a small, traditional market with a very loyal customer base. We firmly believe in the principles of live local, shop local and there is something for everyone here. “Leyland Market is at the heart of the town and we are fully involved in community life. We fully support the Town Team and South Ribble Borough Council in their great efforts to improve and promote the town. Also, we participate fully in annual events such as Leyland Festival, Taste of Leyland and Leyland at Christmas. A swift tour of Leyland Market, there are stalls inside and out, and you soon realise what an extensive and amazing array of stalls are available. Deborah Noblett, operator of The Plant Stall is a great advocate of Leyland Market and what’s on offer here. She said: “We have a loyal customer base, with a loyalty card scheme for customers to

participate in a £20 monthly voucher draw. Social Media also plays a role, we use Facebook, Twitter and, more recently, Instagram to promote offers, stalls and community events in the town.” Paula Halliwell added: “All our food stalls, including the café, use locally sourced fresh produce when they can and all have a food hygiene rating of 5. “The Fish Plaice are also one of the few remaining wholesale suppliers of fresh fish straight from Fleetwood Quayside. The Toffee Box use their own recipes for home made confections, including their speciality, sweets for coughs and colds.

“Whittakers Butchers is in its third generation and the Plant Stall and Cheese Cabin are also long –established. Our service stalls include hairdressers, key cutting, phone/tablet repairs and accessories, key cutting, watch strap and battery replacements, along with the traditional clothes, pet food, bags, jewellery, gothic and traditional giftware, tools, lighting, make-up, socks, hats, fruit and vegetables, greeting cards and stationery. “Plus, we have our very own seamstress - Delia Rutlidge has over 30 years’ experience in clothing alterations and is fantastic at what she does.”

‘….something for everyone…’ Leyland’s ever popular market is maintained at full occupancy. 2 Good Soles, Tillys Boutique, The Phone Box, Little Movers Dancewear and The Market Patisserie are all relatively new additions to the bustling market hall. Paula commented: “Our latest addition, Crafty Melts, is owned and operated by Lisa Roberts. She sells hand-made wax melts, bath bombs and room sprays. The aroma as you pass the stall is amazing!” Total Access Bathrooms ‘Before and After’

According to a Channel 4 TV documentary last year, South Ribble is officially ‘the best place in the UK to live’ and Leyland Market is at the beating heart of it.

Lisa Roberts and Crafty Melts

For more information about the market please call Paula Halliwell, Market Manager, 01772 623073 or email phalliwell@southribble.gov.uk

Our latest stall is Total Access Bathrooms. They are a family run company who specialise in the design, supply and installation of all kinds of bathrooms. Whether you are looking for a traditional, modern or easy access bathroom, they can help you!” Leyland Market entered the Lancashire Tourism Awards and was shortlisted in the top three for the coveted Retail Experience Award. Although Leyland didn’t win, it was the ONLY Lancashire market to reach the finals, in itself, that is a fantastic achievement. As Paula commented earlier, the unavoidable impression is that Leyland Market genuinely does have ‘something for everyone.’ There is a great ‘family feel’ and sense of community amongst the Leyland Market stallholders, many of whom have been friends for years. The Market is open every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Please mention Leyland Leader when responding to advertisements

Growing Care Costs

Money Matters with Greg Heath of Derbyshire Booth Financial Management

AS PART OF BUDGET 2017, CHANCELLOR PHILIP HAMMOND ANNOUNCED AN EXTRA £2 BILLION FUNDING FOR SOCIAL CARE PAVING THE WAY FOR MAJOR CHANGES TO HOW PEOPLE PAY FOR IT. BUT PEOPLE ARE STILL ANNUALLY UNDERESTIMATING THE COST OF ELDERLY CARE BY £7 BILLION [1], ACCORDING TO RESEARCH FROM SCOTTISH WIDOWS’ INDEPENDENT THINK TANK, THE CENTRE FOR THE MODERN FAMILY. On average, UK adults estimate that residential care would cost £549 a week – in reality, it costs on average £866 for a nursing home place – a weekly shortfall of £317[2]. Feeling stressed More worryingly, the deficit could be higher in reality, since 1 in 4 (25%) people admit they have no idea how they would cover these costs for themselves or a relative. Only 15% of people are saving money to pay for their own future care, and 49% say they avoid thinking about the issue because it causes stress. With an ageing population and growing care costs, we could be facing a care funding crisis. Instead, 49% of UK adults say they will have to rely on relatives to help cover costs. This could leave families in difficult financial situations - more than 4 in 10 (42%) have £2,000 or less in life savings to fall back on, meaning they could only cover care costs for two-and-a-half weeks maximum. Shared responsibilities 50% of UK adults believe the responsibility of helping parents pay for care should be shared among siblings. However, 48% of those over 55 haven’t discussed who will take on this responsibility. With more than 9 out of 10 (92%) people not saving anything to help their parents or other older relatives, there could be a significant shortfall in support, particularly as people estimate they could only afford £69 a week on parental care. A lack of understanding of the benefits system could also be problematic. Almost 1 in 4 (24%) claim they would need, or expect, to rely entirely on state support, but 2 in 5 (42%) admit they don’t understand what benefits, practical and financial, they would be entitled to. Family sacrifices Over-reliance on relatives to provide financial support already has significant impact on families. Almost 23% of those caring for a family member say it has put a strain on finances. 12% have been forced to make sacrifices to cover care costs for themselves or relatives, with a 24% of those

making major adjustments such as remortgaging. Similarly, 22% have been forced to make a moderate sacrifice, eg: taking a second job to cover costs. Supporting relatives practically and financially also puts emotional strain on families. Of those providing care, 80% say it’s affected them, with 27% admitting it’s put a strain on relationships. Although women are more likely to say they have less time to themselves than men when caring for a relative, more men than women are feel their family relationships have been impacted. Over-reliance The number of people in care in the UK is set to almost double by 2035. Research shows an overreliance on relatives and the state could put families in serious financial difficulty. It can seem difficult to know how to prepare, but to avoid a financial care crisis, we all need to have honest, early discussions on later life care so no one is left footing bills they can’t afford. As for state provision, it’s clear many people don’t understand the social care benefits and support system. Providing clarity and raising awareness of what is and isn’t available is critical to helping people prepare for the longerterm future. Source data: Report based on both quantitative and qualitative inputs, including a nationally representative pinium survey of 2,000+ UK adults (aged 18 and over). Research carried out between 14 and 20 April 2017 and between 15 and 18 July 2017. [1] Figure calculated based on underestimated price of residential nursing care per week (£317, i.e. £866 minus £549) multiplied by current number of UK over-65s in care (421,100 according to the latest Laing & Buisson and detailed in Age UK’s ‘Later Life in the UK, August 2017’ report) including with nursing and multiplied by 52 [2] According to regional cost figures from Laing & Buisson Care of Older People, including England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland Do you have any questions about your finances? Fifty Years of History in the Making

The Leyland Historical Society recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of their first meeting held at the Parish Institute, Leyland Methodist Church, Turpin Green Lane on July 1st 1968. The events included an “At Home” day where Society members and Lancashire Local History Federation were given talks, lunch, guided Fishwicks bus trip and walks around Leyland. This was followed by two special talks, the first on Codebreakers and Bletchley Park, the second given by Dr David Starkey on “Henry VIII and the first Brexit”.

For seven weeks the Society had a temporary Heritage Centre on Hough Lane which attracted over 1600 visitors to see the various display boards which used to feature in the Craft Tent at the old Leyland Festival and later Craft & Local Societies Fair from 1994 until 2008. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the last 50 years and attract new members to the Society. The group also used the Heritage Centre to speak to the people of Leyland and their families and friends to help us add to the database of Leyland and Farington workers, be it

Leyland Motors, Leyland & Birmingham Rubber Works, BTR, Baxters, Leyland Paints, the four cotton mills, gold thread works, bleach works, or any other factories or workshop. As the factories have all but disappeared from the Leyland skyline, it is a race against time to record what the people remember about working in all the Leyland and Farington factories. The aim is to record their memories for future generations making them available to the local museums,

libraries, colleges and schools in the form of CD, video and publications. The Society has produced an updated and expanded second edition of “The Industrial Heritage of Leyland & Farington” book which will be given free to all those who provide memories. Would you be prepared to let the Society record your memories as we document the working life of the people of Leyland? Telephone the chairman on 01772 641604 or go to the Society’s website www.leylandhistoricalsociety.co.uk and click on the green button where you can submit your details or just email peter@leylandhistoricalsociety.co.uk By Peter Houghton, Chairman Leyland Historical Society

Lancashire FA delighted to welcome Sporting Memories Group Lancashire Football Association has recently welcomed a fantastic sporting initiative into its doors, aiming at helping those living with dementia, loneliness or depression. The Sporting Memories Foundation focuses on the power of sporting reminiscence as a means of bringing people together and ultimately to get people talking. Weekly group sessions of Sporting Memories have been taking place at both Lancashire FA Headquarters and Chorley Football Club for a number of weeks, with additional venues looking to be added in the coming months across the region. Sessions have involved looking back on England’s triumphant 1966 World Cup campaign, historical matches from Wimbledon and many more sporting occasions from over the years. Lancashire FA’s Football Development Officer, Andrew Whitaker, who has worked hard to bring the Sporting Memories sessions to the largest County FA in the country, said: “It is an honour to have the Sporting Memories network group at Lancashire FA, the home football for the county.” “We held our launch event in the middle of June, which saw over 45 people attend from different areas of the community.” “During the event we had members of the Championship winning team of

1959/1960 season who are living with dementia, and South Ribble Dementia Alliance who are working towards a dementia friendly community.” “It’s fantastic to see the power of people’s sporting memories bring those who are living with dementia or have family members who are living with dementia all together, and long may it continue.” Keith McIntosh, who organises the group sessions at both Lancashire FA and Chorley FC said: “I approached the Lancashire FA a few months ago with the prospect of hosting the sessions, and they were really keen on the idea. “It’s another sign of their community values and initiatives, and it’s been a roaring success to date.” Weekly sessions take place at The County Ground, Leyland, on Monday’s 11am-12:30pm. Should anyone want to get involved within this project as a volunteer/ member of the group or even have sporting equipment they would like to donate to the group, please contact Andrew Whitaker on andrew.whitaker@lancashirefa.com By Harry Lyons, Marketing & Communications Officer, Lancashire FA

From Leyland, For Leyland

HAVE you heard, it’s in the air – and on the air! Leyland’s very own community radio station has a fresh new look. From Saturday June 16, Festival Day 2018, Leyland Festival Radio became Radio Leyland. The volunteer-run station has a new name and a new logo to complement its ‘new’ bespoke premises on Tomlinson Road at the heart of our town. Leyland Festival Radio was set up in 2015, initially to cover the Festival, and has been broadcasting, with some ‘holiday breaks,’ ever since. Apart from two brief periods when the organisers were awarded RSLs (Restricted Service Licences, temporary FM frequencies) the station has been available almost exclusively online. However, following an extensive application process, the station was granted a full FM licence earlier this year.

Nick Brake (pictured left), manager of 10ofThose.com, a Christian books and resources company, recently handed over the studio keys. He said: “We export all over the world but we are very much part of Leyland and we value being able to support this exciting venture. It’s great to be in at the beginning of Radio Leyland and we wish the station every future success.” Brian Ashman said: “I am delighted with the interest and support we are getting from the community. Leyland has a specific identity and is ideal for community radio. There is much work to do before the 2019 FM launch but these are exciting times.” Brian Ashman, the managing director and Radio Leyland can currently be found on driving force behind Leyland Festival Radio www.leylandfestivalradio.com explained the changes: “We anticipate where you can listen live to Breakfast becoming a full time FM community radio between 8-9am Monday, Tuesday and station early in 2019. In the past, people have Wednesday. You can catch up with earlier associated us purely with Festival time, but shows by following the links on the station of course we aspire to be much more than website. Listen on your PC or laptop, that. As Radio Leyland we will be Android phone, tablet, iPhone or ‘smart broadcasting on 104.8FM and we’re hoping speaker.’ the ‘Leyland’ brand will inspire and encourage the town to support us. Radio Leyland is looking for volunteers to “We are extremely grateful to the staff at 10ofThose.com for welcoming us into their help in many different roles. If you are Tomlinson Road premises. Three South Ribble parks scoop top awards

THE FLAGS are flying high in South Ribble, with news that three council parks have been ranked among the best in the UK. The borough has scooped three prestigious Green Flag Awards – the gold standard for parks and open spaces – for Worden Park in Leyland, Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve, and Hurst Grange Park in Penwortham. To be considered for a Green Flag, a park must “boast the highest possible environmental standards, be beautifully maintained, and have excellent visitor facilities.” For Worden Park (pictured) , the success represents its continuing high standards, having now won a Green Flag every single year (22 times) since the scheme began. It is the only park north of London to claim this feat. Speaking about Worden Park, the judges commented: “We are impressed with staff knowledge and dedication to their roles. The attention to detail shows that a lot of care and thought goes into the projects that are implemented. The park is going from strength to strength and the investment that has been made to date has made a vast difference to the asset and visitor experience.” Worden Park gets around 300,000 visitors a year and appeals to people both locally and further afield, with its huge adventure playground, miniature train rides, hedge maze, walled gardens and formal gardens. Longton Brickcroft is also very popular – its visitor centre alone attracts 30,000 people through its door annually. And in this year’s Green Flag Award judging process, Longton Brickcroft scored very highly – achieving 80+, the highest score.

Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve

Of the nature reserve, judges said: “There is very good community involvement with all ages being active in the upkeep of the area. It is inviting, well promoted, and attracts visitors from local areas and further afield.” They added: “There is sound management in place, with good local partnerships.” Councillor Caroline Moon, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment and Community Safety at South Ribble Borough Council, said: “This is a huge achievement for our borough. Of course, this national recognition (of how amazing our parks truly are) is no surprise to us in South Ribble: we all know what fantastic, big, green open spaces they are – all maintained to an exceedingly high level. “I know our officers work tirelessly to enhance and promote the parks for the people of South Ribble and beyond – so I want to thank them for continually performing to their own exceptional standards, keeping the parks clean, tidy and looking fabulous all year round. “We also really value the support of our Friends Groups who work voluntarily to make sure the parks look great 365 days a year.” Find out more about the Friends Groups at https://www.southribble.gov.uk/friends where you can also register your details with us to get involved.

Italian Winter

I have only Winter to look forward the young waiter in the restaurant. (she means flirt, I thought) to now! My young friend glanced at me, confused - “Summer is less than halfway through and then there’s the glorious colour of Autumn,” she said.

I suppose there is some solace in the calendar Winter - home-made pea soup or hot-pot, I thought…...but maybe I could do Italian lessons, too.

I was speaking metaphorically – about my age, my earthly life, my future.

Then I could look at Inspector Montalbano She looked at me, as if to remind me rather than of the 1960s, mini-skirted, reading the Springtime of my life, when an older sub-titles! friend, already in her Winter years, a poem by Ann Hooson 2018 announced a sign-up for Italian lessons - in order to converse with
