Driving into the future with Avacab and Leyland Taxis

FAIR play! Or should it be fare play? Perhaps it’s no surprise - the merger of two of Leyland’s leading employers is probably THE local business success story of recent times. In November 2015 Avacab and Leyland Taxis, two iconic local companies, joined together after many years of direct competition for fares. The Ava Group, which also includes Ava Coach and Ava Travel, now employs over 250 people in the borough and is continuing to grow. “As far as the taxis were concerned, the merger brought instant steamlining of operations, greater efficiency in response times, less ‘dead’ mileage and more. It was immediately better all round for both drivers and their passengers.” So says Geoff Dearden, Operations Manager for the group. “We are now operating over 100 frontline taxis in South Ribble and beyond, along with an interest in a further 100 which are mainly concerned with school and community services. “Ava Coach and the Travel Group operates more than 20 ultra modern luxury coaches, including wheelchair accessible buses, with the capacity to move up to 87 passengers.” The Ava Group is investing around £1m annually in coaches and a rolling replacement programme for its older vehicles. Phil Briggs, former manager with Leyland Taxis and now very much involved in managing the new operation, added: “You will see our bright taxis around town, they carry both logos and phone numbers. People recognise them, they are all relatively new,

reliable and all comply with the company’s rigorous standards. Each one provides a great service.” The town centre offices on Hough Lane have been transformed into a travel agency/tour HQ for the travel side but continues to double up as a place to book taxis (24/7) for local runs, airport shuttles and beyond. Supporting the group is an ever growing small army of mechanics with servicing and garaging units at Moss Side. The merger of Leyland’s leading taxi firms completed the vision of Paul Tattersall, MD of Avacab and is proving to be a stroke of genius. Geoff Dearden commented: “Paul’s dream has made complete sense. Now we have just one major company offering all–round better services to the public. “The two staffs have combined quickly and we are now one big ‘family’ which is continually growing. Indeed, the travel and holiday side of the business has taken off in phenomenal fashion, we continue to be extremely busy on this front. “That said, we are never complacent and we are constantly reviewing and looking to improve our services.” It’s a great story and one which is ongoing as the new ‘joint’ company is moving forward at a pace - which is only what you’d expect from a major employer in the travel industry. Fare comment!

5th Annual Leyland Health Mela 2016

“HEALTHY citizens are the greatest asset any country can have.” So said the great statesman Winston Churchill - and it’s hard to disagree. What could possibly be more important than your health and well-being? On September 17 the Fifth Annual Leyland Health Mela will be staged at the Academy @ Worden, Westfield Drive, Leyland. ‘Mela’ is a Sanskrit word for ‘gathering’ or ‘fete.’ In this case, it’s a health-focused gathering with the emphasis on fun, and fellowship. The Health Mela is a unique event, bringing together health professionals, like -minded organisations, NHS Trusts and voluntary bodies bound together by a common desire to promote knowledge, awareness and general well being. Along with opportunities for a FREE Health MOT, with FREE risk assessments and counselling, there will be access, via stalls manned by specialists, to information on healthy lifestyles to keep all the family fighting fit. The agenda is serious - an annual check on residents’ health and more - but it’s also a fun-packed, family–friendly affair. For the children, there’s fun and games, treasure hunt, football shoot out, teddy bear clinic, meet the magician, bouncy castle, slide, special effects face painting, a colouring competition and lots more. With community news, ideas, information, food and drink (healthy options, of course), entertainment, practical demonstrations, there’s bound to be something for everyone. Plus, it’s all FREE, including admission and parking. The Health Mela is one of a series organised across the region (and nationwide) by the National Forum for Health and Wellbeing (NFHW), a voluntary organisation. The popular Leyland Mela is presented in partnership with the Rotary Club of Leyland, who

are passionate about community engagement and wellbeing. Along with the Health Mela, Rotary Club of Leyland support Leyland Festival and organise an Annual Duck Race, raising substantial funds for charity. Professor Romesh Gupta OBE, Chairman of NFHW, said: “The Health Mela concept is widely regarded by UK health professionals and often cited as an example of best practice in community health engagement.” The partnership between NFHW and the region’s Rotary Clubs has resulted in substantial funding being granted for many community-based health initiatives. “In Leyland it has led to wide-ranging links, based on the theme of the Health Mela, being forged between the Academy@Worden and a secondary school in India.” The Health Mela aims to engage and empower the community to lead healthy lifestyles, providing free health checks advice and personal counselling. It serves to encourage the public to make effective and informed use of health resources. The 5th Annual Leyland Health Mela is between 11am and 4pm Saturday September 17 - if you’re healthy, you can be happy!

Restaurant Review

with Da Vinci Wine Bar and Restaurant In the 11 years we have been producing Leyland Leader, the restaurants at Wellington Park - a landmark Leyland business - have changed identities several times. The latest, Da Vinci Wine Bar & Restaurant, opened in a blaze of publicity in 2012 and has since undergone further refurbishment. A recent visit saw us well looked after, no change there, but the introduction of dividing walls and dining booths alongside traditional tables with brightly

coloured seating, gave an altogether fresh, warm and welcoming feel - it’s delightfully different somehow. The menu, too, is different, promising to provide guests with ‘the best of authentic BRITALIAN (British/Italian) cuisine, combining fresh quality ingredients with the best in hospitality. The ultra modern original Da Vinci wine bar still exists, as does the comfortable welcome area - perfect for pre-dinner drinks and menu perusal. An ordinary Thursday night and several tables were occupied, the sounds of happy diners enjoying the ambience is always encouraging when you approach a dining area.

For starters, we opted for the surf and turf opposites. Across the table it was meatballs in tomato sauce. ‘Homemade food is healthy food’ the menu boasts I’m not sure that is always the case, but in this instance a healthy portion of homemade meatballs was deemed to be delicious - and extremely generous. Likewise, my garlic prawns were fine specimens, delightful, piping hot’ juicy and succulent, well pleasing - though the side of lightly toasted ‘Sunblest’ seemed out of place. However, on reflection Gamberini (prawns) and sliced white bread is the ultimate in ‘Britalian’ is it not? A wine bar needs an impressive wine list and Da Vinci offers a wide choice, something for everyone I would hope. To accompany our mains, Da Vinci style fish and poultry, a crisp Italian white wine seemed the natural choice. Pinot Grigio Fabiano was our choice. Described thus: Typical Pinot Grigio with a brilliant straw yellow colour with an almond aftertaste. Its bouquet is intense and characteristic of the best in Pinot Grigio.’ It certainly hit the spot for us, beautifully Italian.

‘...extensive in choice and reasonably priced…’ The pizza and pasta options are extensive in choice and reasonably priced, everything you would expect from a discerning Italian restaurant - they also looked tempting as we watched them delivered to nearby tables. For another day, perhaps. Pollo Alla Crema Chicken with Cream? Correct, and lots of it, chicken that is. A superb portion of moist chicken breast pieces arrived in a creamy sauce laced with mushrooms and onions. Extremely tasty, it was accompanied by seasonal vegetables, in this case cauliflower, green beans and roasted new potatoes. Branzino al Caroccia, that’s Pan-seared seabass with a red pepper puree and chargrilled tomato sauce was our other choice. Two fine seabass fillets, superbly dressed with the red peppers and tomatoes made an impression on arrival at our table. Seabass are the most gentle of fish and on this occasion were slightly overcooked - the flavours were fine but perhaps not as subtle as they might have been - and the accompanying vegetables overwhelmed the centrepiece.

27

Top marks for service, top marks for hospitality, portion control was five star probably too much food, if truth be told. We were well satisfied. Avid readers of our reviews will be aware that we only take desserts in the interests of investigative journalism. Once again, despite being ‘more than full’ after two courses, we took the plunge. Our friendly hosts recommended the Tiramisu, the classic coffee-flavoured creamy Italian dessert and though it wasn’t on the menu, Sticky Toffee Pudding was introduced into the equation - it had to be! Tiramisu and Sticky Toffee, along with coffee and mints provided the final ‘Britalian’ touch to our evening at Da Vinci Wine Bar & Restaurant. Da Vinci is open seven nights a week, offers an extensive Carvery through Sunday afternoons - and there is a tempting Greek cuisine option every Monday evening. Why not give them a try?

With The Flooring Firm of Leyland

WHEN it comes to ‘flooring’ the opposition, The Flooring Firm will tell you they have got all angles covered – and now they have regional recognition to prove it! The Flooring Firm, based at Towngate, Leyland, was recently recognised for its customer service in the north by the UK’s market leader in luxury vinyl flooring, Karndean Designflooring. Owner Michael Harwood is understandably delighted. Karndean looks to recognise the success of its nationwide retailer network with a monthly award scheme looking at customer service and overall performance in each region. Michael Harwood explained: “We do the very best we can for every customer, but this came out of the blue and we’re delighted to receive our award from Karndean. To be nominated the best in the region is fantastic and a real credit to everyone here.” Michael has been ‘in carpets’ all his life and what he doesn’t know about flooring probably isn’t worth knowing. He grew up in Adlington, his father was in carpets and flooring and for many years Michael worked in the family business in Chorley before setting up The Flooring Firm in Leyland in 2002. He said: “Your floor is the base of your home life and your choice determines the look of your home and how you wish to use

The Flooring Firm manager Jackie Brook with Michael Harwood and the award

it. You can’t change it like you might change your furniture The choices within Karndean Designflooring are vast and it means so much to get it right. We pride ourselves on how we guide that process from design through to the installation. “It all starts in the shop and hopefully, this award proves we have got that crucial bit right! “I think personal service, friendly help and advice and customer satisfaction are very important. To be recognised on a regional level by a globally renowned company such as Karndean is just brilliant.”

Care in Your OWN Home ASK AMANDA!

Amanda Singleton is the Registered Manager for Independent Living, she answers you questions

DO YOU CARRY OUT PRIVATE HOME CARE? ANSWER: YES. We now focus exclusively on people who pay for their care privately, or control a personal budget. We enjoy working with you to meet your needs, you decide what type of service you want, at what time of day you want it, the time we spend with you, and your preferred carers. Because we can devote time to our customers and their families we believe that this leads to high quality service. We know exactly who you are, what your care history is, and your likes and dislikes. Therefore we are more likely to understand your requirements. If you have any issues with your care, or would like a private discussion we are more than happy to visit your home, or if you prefer you can visit our offices. We find that someone’s needs can change rapidly, and as a private care company we can react quickly to help. We can often put in place changes and or visit you on the same day you contact us. If care is funded by public bodies they have a rigid systems and a high level of demand it may take them time to complete a reassessment and for the finance department to agree funding. As a private provider we know some of our customers want the certainty of a fixed care pattern every week, for example they may want a call very day at 9am. On the other hand many of our customers and their families have busy lives, family may not be local and as a result they also want a flexible service. It is common for our customers to need changes to their support with less than 24 hours’ notice - we pride ourselves on offering flexibility, trying our best to help at short notice even if this means providing overnight care on the day requested!

If we can help with general care, or overnight support please call me 01257 696 050 Overnight & 24 hour care Personal Care – washing, bathing etc Companionship Transport and Days Out Housekeeping Parkinsons, Stroke, Cancer & Memory loss support and much more ...

Brexit and your Finances

Money Matters with Derbyshire Booth Financial Management Ltd The Leave campaign won in England and Wales, while every council in Scotland saw Remain majorities. The referendum turnout was 71.8%, with more than 30 million people voting. It was the highest turnout in a UKwide vote since the 1992 general election. But what could this mean to our finances? It goes without saying that investors are going to have to hold on to their nerves. The markets have clearly been shocked by the decision, and, although unsettled, investors should look through this period of uncertainty and focus on longerterm opportunities. There will be challenges in the near term, and there is likely to be a period of uncertainty as the exact terms of Britain’s exit from Europe are negotiated. There needs to be a period of managing political uncertainty, ensuring the UK enters negotiations feeling economically strong rather than weak. STERLING The value of sterling on Monday June 28 fell to a 31-year low, its lowest since mid-1985, taking losses to 11.8% since the June 23 vote. Given all the uncertainty, investors are pricing in a rate cut this year, with some analysts expecting the Bank of England to consider quantitative easing to provide a buffer for the economy. Within days of the Brexit result, gilt yields hit record lows with the 10-year benchmark dropping below 1%. Many analysts expect the value of the pound to fall significantly in the medium term. A weaker pound means that buying goods or services from other countries will become more expensive, inflation will therefore be higher and goods being sold to other countries will become cheaper for the buyers. Wages The economic effects of leaving the EU could cause unemployment to rise in the UK which would reduce the pressure for wage growth. The Treasury estimated that wages will be between

2.8% and 4% lower at the point of maximum impact. However, if the UK remains a member of the EU for at least another two years, much will depend on economic performance during this period. The Economy In the event that economic growth is slower outside the EU in the short term, the Government’s income could fall, leaving it with less money to spend. There have been estimates of the size of that possible shortfall varying between £28bn and £44bn by 2019/20. Ultimately, the UK’s economic growth and potential budget shortfalls will very much depend on the precise nature of trade agreements and whether the UK will be a member of the European Economic Area (EEA). One further option the Government may consider is not to keep its earlier target to balance the books by 2020, known as the ‘fiscal mandate’. This would enable decisions to be made as whether to maintain benefit payments at current levels. Interest Rates The governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, speaking soon after David Cameron on Friday June 24, stopped short of announcing an increase in interest rates to defend the pound, which would have affected millions of households on tracker-style or variable rate mortgages. Instead Mr Carney has promised £259bn QE to calm the markets. Property Some uncertainty and concerns from consumers could lead to a stalling in the housing market, although it will take a longer period to see the full economic effects of Brexit. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced that Brexit could result in the fall in house prices, and this was on the expectation that the cost of mortgages may rise.

‘...keep this event in perspective…’ Investments Maintaining a long-term perspective is the key to investment success. As was widely predicted, a vote to leave the EU wiped billions off companies’ share prices. Low interest rates and volatile stock markets are likely to be the order of the day for the foreseeable future, and any rise in interest rates would be good news for savers. However, it’s important to keep this event in context. This is far from the global financial crisis of 2008, but the decision to leave the European Union sparked volatility across asset classes. In terms of specific sectors, banking, airlines and construction experienced the biggest falls in share prices. Impulse decisions For investors that have no immediate need to withdraw money, they should remain invested, especially if they are genuinely investing and not speculating. Making impulse decisions, such as selling much too low out of fear, can be very costly in the long run. Even though there had been falls in the FTSE 100 (and then recovered), and more significantly to the FTSE 250 since the EU referendum result, it’s also important not to lose sight of buying opportunities. The golden rule when investing is to buy low and sell high. With the massive amount of uncertainty surrounding Brexit and its potential long-term effects, now may be a good time for adventurous investors to add appropriate stocks selling at all-time lows to their portfolios. For people years from retirement, they have lots of time for these securities to rebound and need to keep calm and carry on. Investment success While the knee-jerk reactions will continue to make headlines, history has shown that maintaining a long-term perspective is the key to investment success. Although there has been a significant slide downwards in sterling, it’s worth remembering that the UK has previously endured sharp devaluations before, notably following the ejection of the pound from the European

67

Exchange Rate mechanism (ERM) and in the aftermath of the banking crisis, resulting in periods of economic expansion. LARGEST ECONOMY The UK is the fifth largest economy in the world, and, looking at the fundamentals, more than 70% of FTSE 100 earnings are international in nature and so are little affected by any weakness in the UK domestic economy stemming from the vote. It is important that investors’ portfolios are well diversified and a long-term perspective is maintained, and investors should be careful not to be drawn into any hysteria – a multi-asset approach will enable investors to protect capital and drive long-term returns in the future. The UK’s exit from the European Union after 43 years surprised markets. It is important to keep this event in context – this is far from the global financial crisis of 2008. This is a time for investors to concentrate on long-term fundamentals and to remain focused on meeting their investment goals. Appeal to raise funds to name guide dog puppy Worden

THE Mayor of South Ribble is hoping residents will go barking mad for a new scheme to raise £5,000 to name a guide dog. The pooch would aptly be named ‘Worden’ after the award-winning Leyland park and people are being asked to help support the cause by holding fundraising events. The campaign was officially launched in the Walled Garden by South Ribble’s First Citizen, Councillor Linda Woollard and MP Seema Kennedy. They were joined on the day by Guide Dogs staff, volunteers and of course their puppies and working dogs. Councillor Woollard said: “I think it is a lovely idea to have a guide dog named Worden – not least because the park is a dog walker’s haven.

“It is such a fantastic cause and I would urge people to get behind it in any way that they can. “I was asked to do a blindfolded walk as part of the launch and it helped me realise just how important it is to have a guide dog. Not only are they a companion for people who have lost their sight – they also help them to enjoy life and be independent.” Volunteers from Guide Dogs Leyland are holding a series of events, including a Dogs Unite sponsored walk in the sprawling park in September. As part of the scheme, the community would

receive a birth certificate, a picture of the puppy when it is six weeks old, ‘pupdates’ throughout its first year of puppy walking and also the chance to meet Worden once he is old enough. Yvonne Onslow, Guide Dogs Volunteer and Leyland Group Organiser, said: “As a community we are aiming to raise £5,000 to name Worden. It actually costs around £50,000 to support a guide dog through its lifetime so the more we can raise the better. We are asking individuals, businesses, workforces and community organisations across South Ribble to raise money to help us make this idea a reality. “You can fundraise in any way you please and our local volunteers, with working guide dogs and puppies in training, will do their best to be there to support any events you organise.” Research shows that every hour a person in the UK goes blind. When someone loses their sight, Guide Dogs helps ensure that they don’t lose their freedom too. The charity relies solely on raising funds through the generosity of the public. To find out more about naming a puppy Worden, follow the group at: www.facebook.com/ leylandpuppy or visit: www.justgiving.com/ leylandpuppy

South Ribble welcomes new Mayor ONE councillor is looking forward to going back to the classroom – as the new Mayor of South Ribble. Former teacher, Councillor Linda Woollard has been officially installed as the borough’s First Citizen at a special meeting of the Council. The Penwortham grandmother’s family, friends and fellow councillors proudly watched on as she received the iconic robes and chain from retiring Mayor, Councillor Mary Green. Speaking about her new role, Councillor Woollard said: “I am extremely proud and humbled to be asked to become the Mayor of South Ribble. “It is a very important duty and I am really looking forward to representing the borough over the course of the next year. “As a retired teacher, one of the things I will enjoy most is going into schools and meeting all of the young children. “I’m also looking forward to visiting the many charities across South Ribble and seeing first-hand the exceptional work that volunteers are doing day in, day out.” Councillor Woollard has represented the Broad Oak ward since May 2007. She will be joined by her husband of 48 years, Alistair as her consort. With a background in art, one of her favourite tasks as Deputy Mayor was judging an art exhibition in Longton. She added: “Councillor Mary Green has been a terrific Mayor and will be an extremely hard act to follow. “She is very thoughtful, kind and she has so much energy – she is a remarkable lady and an inspiration.

91

Mayor Councillor Linda Woollard and consort Alistair Woollard

“I have really enjoyed spending the past year as her deputy and I’m sure it’ll stand me in good stead for the next 12 months and the many engagements I can look forward to.” And, the mother-of-four’s first official function will be on Friday when she will welcome dignitaries to the Civic Centre for the Mayor’s Banquet. Throughout the year she will also hold fundraising events to raise vital funds for her three chosen charities - Galloway’s Society for the Blind, St Catherine’s Hospice and Heartbeat. Councillor Woollard will be supported throughout the year by her Deputy Mayor, Councillor Mick Titherington and his wife Carole, Deputy Mayoress. He has clocked up more than a decade of service on the council and represents the Broadfield ward.

ONE councillor is looking forward to going back to the classroom – as the new Mayor of South Ribble.
