Leader Comment June 2019 Yes, here at Leyland Leader we are celebrating our fourteenth anniversary. How that suddenly happened, it’s hard to figure out, but we are where we are, 14 years down the road—and boy, have we walked some roads in that time! Leyland Leader, the Independent Business magazine for Leyland, first hit the streets of PR25 (and later PR26) back in May 2005 and we’ve trod many miles since then. It’s been a great journey, though, we’ve met lots of fascinating people, made lots of friends, upset only a few (!) - and personally delivered more than half a million magazines. We are eternally grateful to the hundreds of businesses, trades, services, individuals and organisations who have supported us along the way. Some local companies have advertised in every issue -and we have reached number 169! Back here in 2019, one great community initiative we have got involved in is Radio Leyland, our town’s volunteer-run community radio station. After broadcasting almost exclusively online for around four years, the station launched on 104.8 FM and is now up and running on a daily basis. On April 1, presenter Phil Gough hosted the first live breakfast show, along with Leyland Leader’s Keith Bradshaw, before an audience of invited guests. The Mayor of South Ribble Councillor John Rainsbury cut the ‘imaginary ribbon’ and Radio Leyland had ‘lift-off.’ Radio Leyland is always on the lookout

for volunteers for all kinds of roles, both in front of and behind the microphones. All training is free. The station can be contacted at leylandcommunityradio@gmail.com or via the Radio Leyland Facebook page. The town’s biggest event of the year, of course, is the annual Leyland Festival which this year is taking the theme of ‘Musicals.’ Leyland Festival 2019 promises to be even bigger and more spectacular than ever. Live music will literally take centre stage at this year’s ‘musical’ festival. Already there is much excitement at the news that local star Kevin Simm, winner of The Voice, once of Liberty X and now fronting Wet, Wet Wet is topping the bill. As the month of June unfolds, there’s lots to look forward to enjoy! Keith and Ruth Bradshaw

In the Garden

A monthly gardening column with Debbie Noblett from The Plant Stall, Leyland Market With Summer well on the way, it’s safe enough now to plant tender annual bedding plants. Prepare your ground by weeding and breaking up the soil, add some organic matter, soil improver, (this is often made up of re-cycled garden waste) chicken pellet manure or your preferred brand. Always read the instructions, adding more can scorch and burn the roots off plants. Water plants well before planting, dig your hole, fill it with water and plant them. Water them if there is a prolonged spell of hot weather, but it’s better to encourage plants & shrubs to search down for moisture when planted in the ground. If you’re planting tomato plants, good outdoor varieties are Red Alert and Totem or Tumbler which can be grown in a hanging basket. There are lots of greenhouse varieties to choose from, instead of caning indoor tomatoes they can be twisted round a piece of strong string attached to the plant, then tied up securely to dowelling attached higher up. Take the side shoots out as they grow and give them a shake or “tickle” the flowers to help with pollination. Tomatoes need plenty of feed, after approximately 4-6 weeks the food in compost or grow bags will have been absorbed. A general bottle of tomato feed is OK to use and is fine for hanging baskets and all your other plants, or just buy a high potash feed. Read the instructions for dilution, overfeeding can give lots of leafy growth and poor

flowering/fruits. If tomatoes develop a black patch at the base, this is blossom end rot and occurs with inconsistent watering so regular watering is essential. Planting marigolds around the base of the plants attracts pests which would otherwise go on your plants. Watering can be a problem and never ending during the Summer. Acquire a water butt to collect run off water, add water retaining crystals to compost, remember not to fill pots to the top as the crystals swell when wet. Cutting the base out of a long necked cordial bottle, then inserting well down it into the centre of a hanging basket or pot, acts as a good funnel for watering. The plants will grow round the bottle to hide it and the water gets straight to the roots. Feed baskets every other week and dead head them to keep them looking good. Water early morning and after the sun has gone down for the best absorption. In the heat of the sun water just evaporates and plants can’t drink it quick enough. Enjoy your garden and let’s hope for a glorious Summer of growing. If you want to steer away from using chemicals, cinnamon isn’t just useful in the kitchen, it has many benefits in the gardening world. This information is from Anne Baley’s online gardening tips & information.

Joining forces for D Day 75th Anniversary To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, local charity Age UK Lancashire is hosting a special Afternoon Tea for veterans at their Lifestyle Centre on Gillibrand Street in Chorley. The event is free to attend, with afternoon tea and refreshments being served to visitors. Vintage singer Hattie Bee will be providing the live musical entertainment for the afternoon singing a variety of songs from artists including Vera Lynn, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald, which is sure to be a highlight of the event. Christine Mottley from Age UK Lancashire says: “We are really excited to be hosting this event to be able to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings and are inviting any older veteran to come along and join us. Places are limited so booking is essential. We are encouraging anyone wishing to come to contact us straight away to avoid missing out”. The event is on Thursday June 6 and starts at 2pm until 4pm. There are plenty of car parking options close to the centre as well as easy access to public transport and a drop off point outside. Christine Mottley added: “The Lifestyle Centre is a great location for this type of event and is becoming well known for the lovely freshly made cakes and food we

serve! We hope that guests will enjoy the afternoon and it’s also a great chance to socialise with fellow veterans. We think it’s a really good way to mark the anniversary”. The event is made possible from funding received by the Aged Veterans Fund as part of the Joining Forces project. Age UK Lancashire’s Older Veteran Service has been running for 2 years and helps veterans to gain confidence, independence and gives access to social opportunities. Anyone wishing to find out more or book their place at the event can call Christine on 07794 620596 or contacting the Lifestyle Centre on 01257 267293. Booking is essential as spaces are limited.

Restaurant Review with Bangla Spice, Leyland

Did you know that around 90% of ‘Indian’ restaurants in the UK are owned and staffed by people of Bangladeshi origin? You probably didn’t know that one of my favourite expressions of all time is: ‘Let’s go out for an Indian!’ Perhaps it’s time change our thinking on this. Take Bangla Spice, the ever popular ‘curry house’ on Wigan Road, Leyland for example. Both Mujib, the owner, and Malik who, as front of house, has been greeting and serving eager diners in Leyland for over 20 years are Bangladeshi. Both Mujib and Malik originate from the same village in Bangladesh, 1000s of miles from Leyland, though they didn’t know that until Malik transferred his services to Bangla Spice just last year.

every discerning curry lover here - and, of course, the hardest task is choosing. Step forward Malik, expert menu guide and gourmet guru. With choices made we took our place in the comfortable dining area. Already in waiting was a dish of the lightest, crispest traditional Pappadums with the much anticipated pickle and chutney tray. Always the most delightful way to start your Asian culinary adventure - and so it proved. Our chosen starters, Mixed Kebab and a King Prawn Puri, both family favourites, were equally delicious, beautifully presented and more than generous. The Kebab was a combination of tasty Chicken Tikka pieces, Onion Bhajis and a tandooried minced meat Shish Kebab, garnished with crisp lettuce, tomato and lemon. But what about the food, I hear you ask! And the King Prawn Puri? It’s a delicious Well, after a recent visit to Bangla Spice, slice of deep fried unleavened bread with ‘Let’s go out for a Bangladeshi’ is now my succulent king prawns in a spicy stuffing, current favourite expression. ‘...tremendous taste and superb value…’ We can thoroughly recommend the San Giorgio Pinot Grigio from Venezia, Italy. ‘A nicely rounded fresh, crisp easy drinking style, softly perfumed with delicate fresh citrus and tropical fruit flavours.’ Perfect for a wet, windy, Wednesday night on Wigan Road. Suitably rested, it was time to sample two of the Chef’s Signature Dishes, as recommended by our helpful local guide. Two mains, one Pilau Rice (very colourful) and one super-hot (temperature) Plain Nan arrived by trolley and was duly served up. My Chicken Tikka Naga Bahar Special is described as ‘a hot and spicy dish cooked with fresh naga chillies, combined with tomatoes, garlic and onions.’ It was indeed hot and spicy but packed with delicious chicken pieces and wholesome tomatoes. Accompanied by the rice and nan (and the wine and iced water) it was sheer delight. Across the table lay another feast, both for the eyes and the palate. Chicken Tikka Vegetable Korai is medium spiced chicken tikka pieces cooked with a combination of vegetables, seasoned with herbs and spices - superbly tasty but not too hot!

Both meals were declared delicious and duly despatched - almost - portions at the Bangla Spice are not for the faint-hearted but offer tremendous taste and value. Restaurant reviews usually include a dessert course - the Bangla could certainly oblige, but on this occasion we settled for coffee to end a delightful dining Indian (or Bangla) experience. Bangla Spice offers an online takeaway service for its extensive and highly impressive menu. There is also a fabulous Sunday Buffet from 1-7pm with ‘All you can eat - different menus every week.’ And, as if even more value was needed, there’s a special dine-in menu, £10.95 per guest, every Monday to Thursday until 8pm. Dining in or Takeaway, we can thoroughly recommend the Bangla Spice experience.
