BILL BARRETT: EMANATIONS IN BRONZE

OCTOBER 9 - NOVEMBER 8, 2015

Bill Barrett’s Emanations in Bronze features a significant range of the wide variety of these remarkable “frozen in motion” expressions for which Barrett has been widely acclaimed and which seem more like images of impromptu spontaneity than objects of durable metal. As precursor sculptures for his largescale work, the maquettes and mid-sized works in this exhibition offer opportunities for collectors who do not have the space for his more monumental pieces. Art historian and critic Peter Frank has written about Barrett’s work that, “These sculptures are not bodies gesturing, they are the gestures themselves.” Barrett himself concurs with the composer Edvard Grieg’s belief that to create art “one must first be a human being. All true art grows out of that which is distinctly human.” These sophisticated constructions, through a delicate balance of form and content, transcend the starker aesthetics of minimalism with a warmth and humanity that suggests the rhythm of dance and music. Cathartic in nature, Barrett’s sculptural works clearly convey his ability to translate emotion into lyrically fluent forms. With each work of art, Barrett aims for a certain life-spark that speaks to the viewer’s inner self, to his ideas and his moods. Born in Los Angeles, California, Bill Barrett has become known as an iconic figure in American Modernist sculpture. He is considered to be a central figure in the second generation of American metal sculptors and is influenced by the work of sculptural artists such as David Smith, Henry Moore and Auguste Rodin, as well as the abstract expressionist paintings of Arshily Gorky. He has been exhibiting his work since the mid-1960s and has been included in many museum exhibitions and international art expositions — the Whitney Sculpture Annual in 1970, Art Basel in 1989, the Tokyo Expo in 1990, and the Armory Show in New York in 1996, to name only a few. Barrett attended the University of Michigan from 1954 to 1960 and earned his BS and MS in Design and his MFA from the same institution. Additionally, Barrett’s work is represented in numerous private and public collections. His sculptures are in such renowned sculpture parks as the Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey, Pyramid Hill in Ohio, and Runnymede in California, and also are installed on dozens of corporate, municipal and university campuses. Several are on the campus of his alma mater, the University of Michigan. Barrett is the subject of Bill Barrett: Evolution of a Sculptor, a major monograph of his work by Philip Palmedo, published in 2003 by Hudson Hills Press, and Bill Barrett Sculpture and Paintings to 2012, published recently. 2
