Maldives The Maldives lies in two rows of atolls in the Indian Ocean, just across the equator. The country is made up of 1,190 coral islands formed around 26 natural ring-like atolls, spread over 90,000 square kilometers. These atoll structures are formed upon a sharp ridge rising from the ocean, making way for their secluded uniqueness. MalĂŠ , the capital of this archipelago is located in the centre of these islands. Each atoll in the Maldives is made of a coral reef encircling a lagoon, with deep channels dividing the reef ring. A string of islands take their places among this atoll ring; each island has its own reef encircling the island lagoon. The reefs of the islands, alive with countless types of underwater creatures and vibrant corals, protect the islands from wind and wave action of the surrounding vast oceans. This unique structure of reefs and channels makes navigation almost impossible for the passer-by without sufficient information about these waters. Ninety-nine percent of the Maldives is made up of sea. The people of the islands are widely dispersed across the atolls, with about 200 inhabited islands. About 100 islands are developed as tourist resorts and the rest are uninhabited or used for agriculture and other livelihood purposes.

Maldivian Culture The people of Maldives reflect virtually every race in the world - not only from their features but also from customs and traditions handed down from generation to generation. History reveals that Maldives has been populated for over 3,000 years and that the first settlers were from the neighboring countries of Sri Lanka and Southern India. This conclusion is drawn from the archeological evidence which shows the existence of Hinduism and Buddhism before the country embraced Islam in 1153 A.D. South Asia has also influenced Maldives tremendously, especially in the entertainment sector. Though this is so, some of their customs like demanding submissive roles from women are not of norm in the Maldives. On the contrary, women are empowered through education and equality in the society. It is not only through their features that the people of Maldives reflect other societies, but also through their attire. As the climate is warm, most go about dressed casually in T-shirts and cotton clothing. Both imported garments and self-tailored ones can be seen. The language of the Maldivians is Dhivehi, though significant dialectical variations exist, especially in the southernmost atolls. The Dhivehi script is called “Thaana. Dhivehi has its roots in Sanskrit and comes under the Indro-Indian group of languages. With the advent of the Islam in 1153AD, Dhivehi became heavily influenced by Arabic and again in the 1960s with the introduction of English as a medium of education, English language also began to influence it. Due to the geographical isolation of islands, the Dhivehi vocabulary and pronunciation vary from atoll to atoll, in some cases slightly while in other cases the difference is more noticeable. Since Maldives embraced Islam in 1153, Islam has been central to the life of Maldivians.

Our featured selection of handpicked destinations from the world’s most exotic, beautiful and unique travel destination – The Maldives

HaA Alifu, HAA DHAALU, Shaviyani & Noonu Haa Alifu, the northernmost atoll of the Maldives constitutes of 45 islands, with 14 of them inhabited by an estimated population of 14,000, together with 3 resorts. A total of 13 dive sites lie in these waters, the most notable ones being Baarah Thila and Maadhoo Wreck. The capital and the largest island is Dhidhoo. Another prominent island is Uligamu, which lies at the very top of the atoll acting as the clearance port for health and immigration concerning yachts arriving in the Maldives. The most famous, however, is Utheemu, one of the most significant historical sites in northern Maldives. Home to the great Maldivian hero Sultan Mohammed Thakurufaanu, who along with his brothers defeated the Portuguese and ended their rule in 1573. This island has a memorial ‘The Utheemu Ganduvaru’ (the wooden preservation of the Sultan’s childhood home), together with a museum and a library in his name. Another island with an interesting history is Kelaa, a British base during WWII, similar to that of Gan Island in the south of Maldives. It is also the home to one of the oldest mosques in the country, dating back to the 7th century. Haa Dhaalu atoll is a combination of two small geographical atolls; South Thiladhunmathee Atoll and Maamakunu Atoll. It consists of 35 islands of which only 13 are inhabited by an estimated population of about 16,000. The capital, Kulhudhuffushi Island, with its hospital, secondary school and many shops is the central hub of the northern Maldives. The island of Hanimaadhoo is the regional airport that serves numerous daily flights to and from Malé, and also has one of the only guesthouses in the region. Some ancient historical monuments are found in Kumundhoo, which has a stone circle that is said to be the base of a Bhuddist stupa, and in Vaikaradhoo, which has a hawitta. The surrounding area of Haa Dhaalu Atoll is frequently affected by relentless storms and is the graveyard of quite a number of ships including the English ship Persia Merchant, wrecked in 1658, and the Hayson that ran into a reef in 1819. A total of 25 dive sites are found here, the most popular ones being Theefarido Thila, Anemone Thila, Nilandhoo Thila, Magic Mashroom and the Buda Cave.

Shaviyani Atoll is situated third from the northern edge, this 37 miles long atoll constitutes of 51 islands of which 16 are inhabited by a population of an estimated 17,000. Quite famous for being a major breeding ground for turtles, the atoll has the most pristine of beaches in the country. The capital is Milandhoo Island which was uninhabited until 1997, when the population of nearby Makunudhoo was resettled here due to its water contamination. The main industry is plantation; hence, most of the space is used for it. The atoll also possesses islands with remarkable archaeological significance, Funadhoo, the former capital with ruins of an ancient mosque with tombstones dating back to 13th century and the island of Kanditheemu which has the oldest known example of Maldivian unique Thaana script in the form of an inscription on the doorframe of its main mosque. Noonu Atoll is made up of 61 islands, where only 16 are inhabited with a population of 16,000. Four tourist resorts and 8 dive sites including the popular Christmas Rock and the variety of small and large marine life gives this atoll quite a memorable name. The capital is Manadhoo, though Holhudhoo and Velidhoo are more populous. The island of Landhoo has large ruins from the historical Buddhist era of Maldives; the locals call the hawitta ‘maabadhige’. One of the most popular sites of Noonu Atoll is its Edu Faru National Marine Park, a diverse lagoon that combines nine uninhabited islands and surrounding waters with a single unified coral reef. This unique park is the first of its kind in the country and is protected by law, preventing any building activities and only certain vessels have access to the area. At present, all resorts of Noonu Atoll have exclusive access to the dive sites of this park.

Raa, Baa & Lhaviyani Baa atoll, otherwise known as Maalhosmadulu Dhekunuburi, is constituent of 70 islands of which only 13 are inhabited by an estimated population of 12,000 with the acclimatized islands housing some of the most luxurious resorts. Baa atoll is also a diver’s haven, housing a wide diversity of marine life protected by a Unesco World Biosphere Reserve, thereby entitling this southern atoll one of the Maldives’ central tourism hotspots. Additionally, the locals of Baa atoll are famous for their unique style of lacquer work and their talent in weaving the traditional Maldivian garment known as the ‘Feyli’, an industry that is centered on the atoll capital Eydhafushi, the second largest island in the area. Located just north of Baa Atoll lies a series of 65 islands that collectively make up Raa Atoll, one of the country’s largest traditional dhoni building centers, with its capital island Ungoofaru and Alifushi acting as hubs to this thriving local business. A fairly average population of 24,500 occupies a very small percentage of the total land area with locals inhabiting only 12 islands with 3 fully functional resorts. Regardless of the limited accommodations, Raa Atoll is a veritably popular destination for tourists due to favorable environmental conditions present on either sides of the Atoll promoting coral growth. This strikingly varied form of marine wildlife attracts divers and historians alike. The channels surrounding Raa Atoll were famously nicknamed ‘Moresby Channel’ after the Royal Navy Officer who is rumored to have conducted a marine examination of the Maldivian Waters. Moreover, several key figures in Maldivian history such as the Arab foreigner Ibn Battuta were known to have travelled these waters and even taken shelter within the local islands themselves. Lhaviyani Atoll forms part of a minority in the country’s total population with only 4 tenanted islands consisting of roughly 11,000 people alongside 5 exclusive resorts. In addition to the abundant tourism rates, Lhaviyani Atoll is lionized as a hub for the fishing industry and is also the key provider of several island concocted natural medical cures primarily produced within the capital Naifaru.

Malé

the capital of Maldives Hukuru Miskiiy The old Friday Mosque Built in the 17th century the Hukuru Miskiiy or Friday Mosque served the population of Malé as their main mosque for almost four centuries, until the Islamic Centre and Grand Friday Mosque took over the function in 1984. Built by Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar in 1656 the mosque is a masterpiece of coral carvings and traditional workmanship - probably the best display of coral carvings to be found throughout Maldives. The walls of the mosque are hewn together with blocks of filigree-carved coral blocks. Heavy wooden doors slide open to the inner sanctums with lamp hangings of wood and panels etched with Arabic writings. The area surrounding the mosque is a cemetery with a legion of intricately carved coral headstones. The Munnaaru or minaret in front of the mosque, which was used to call the faithful to prayer, was built in 1675 by the same Sultan.

Malé fish market & local market The northern waterfront has always been the main commercial area of Malé. This area acts as the main hub of trade and is a hive of activity through out the day. The waterfront and the by-lanes in the area are crowded with shops stocked with a variety of goods and vehicles used in loading and transportation of goods to the local shops. Also in the area are the Malé Fish Market and the Local Market where a range of local produce are available

Medhu Ziyaaraiy This is the shrine of Abu-al Barakath Yusuf al Barbaree – the Moroccan scholar believed to be responsible for the advent of Islam in the Maldives in 1153 AD; and is also a must-see monument.

Malé

the capital of Maldives Mulee-aage The Presidential Palace Right in front of the Hukuru Miskiiy is Mulee-aage, a palace built in 1906 by Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddeen III, replacing a house dating back to the mid17th century. The palace with its wrought iron gates and fretwork friezes on its roof edges and well-kept garden was intended for his son, but the Sultan was deposed. During World War II vegetables were grown in its garden to help relieve food shortages. It became the President’s Official Residence when Maldives became a republic in 1953 and remained so until 1994, when the new Presidential Palace was built. Even today it is used as an official residence of the President.

The Islamic Centre The golden dome of The Islamic Centre is the most vivid architectural landmark of Malé that you would notice while approaching Malé from afar. The spectacular golden dome in all its majesty dominates the skyline, as you approach Malé, from any direction. The building symbolizes the religion of Islam, which is practiced by the entire population of the Maldives. Completed in 1984, the Islamic Centre consists of a mosque large enough to accommodate 5,000 worshipers, a library of Islamic literature, a conference hall and numerous classrooms and offices.

Museum The articles on display range from thrones and palanquins used by former sultans to the first printing press used in the country, the rifle used by Mohamed Thakurufaanu in his fight against the Portuguese in the 16th century, ceremonial robes, headgear and umbrellas used by Sultans to statues and other figures dating from 11th century, excavated from former temples. A variety of artifacts from times past would give an idea of the unique and rich culture and history of this island nation. 69

The Shrine of King Ibrahim Kalaafaanu and the Traditional Mosque of Hangnameedhoo In the island of Hangnaameedhoo, lies one of the most historically significant sites of the ancient Maldives; the shrine of King Ibrahim Kalaafaanu together with the traditional mosque. In 1609 AD when Malabars attacked Maldives, Sultan Ibrahim Kalaafaanu III (son of the great national hero Mohamed Thakurufaanu), escaped and fled Male’ in one of his ships. Unfortunately for him, the Malabars caught up with him and he died in the battle that followed. His ship which was abandoned after looting drifted to Hangnameedoo. When the people of the island saw the bodies of the sultan along with the hero Jamaal Kalo who fought alongside the sultan, they buried the bodies beside their ancient mosque. A special shrine was then built for the martyred king. The shrine became a highly revered one, and the people of Hangnameedhoo were offered grants and special privileges by the crown for their loyal service. They were freed from the usual obligation of labour chores the subjects had to perform for the kingdom, like that of building boats, forms of taxation and other community responsibilities. The people of Hangnameedhoo were also given a nearby island as a part of this grant and no other was allowed to land there without the permission of the islanders. Today, though the grants and privileges no longer stand, the shrine, the mosque and the other ancient tombstones are a part of country’s heritage and hence, a great source of pride for the islanders.

Thaa & Laamu Thaa Atoll, also known as Kolhumadulu comprises of 62 islands, 13 of them inhabited by a population of 8,500, and one tourist resort. The capital is Veymandhoo and some of the other densely populated islands include Thimarafushi, Kinbidhoo and Guraidhoo. There is a newly opened airstrip in Thimarafushi. Geographically all the islands are situated on the edges of the atoll, clustered around the channels. Some of these islands have sites with historical significance like that of the ruins of a 25m-wide hawitta in Kinbidhoo, the grave of a banished sultan (Sultan Usman I) in Guraidhoo and on Dhiyanmingili, the ruins of the palace of Sultan Mohammed Imaduddin II, the founder of the longest ruling dynasties of the Maldives. The island of Burunee in the north is famous for its carpenters, though many of them work elsewhere, building boats or tourist resorts. A total of 37 dive sites in Thaa Atoll, the most popular ones being Gorgonian Garden, Beauty and the Beast, Brand’s Hatch and Oligiri Kandu. Laamu, the largest atoll of the Maldives, constitutes of 59 islands, out of which 11 are inhabited and one, a tourist resort. Popular dive sites here are the Maamendhoo Giri and Munnafushi Kandu. The capital island Fonadhoo is linked to Kadhoo and Gan by causeways, forming one of the longest roads in the country. There is an airport in the island of Kadhoo, with multiple flights daily, to and from MalÊ. Laamu Atoll has quite a number of archaeological sites and objects, some of them depicting pre-Islam civilizations. These include a giant black dome, images of Buddha and a 300 year old mosque built on the site of an earlier temple in Isdhoo, Buddhist stupas in Gan and several mounds in Kadhoo, Maandhoo and Hithadhoo.

Just an inter-island plane trip from Malé and a short boat ride brings you to a palm-fringed paradise with 97 sustainable villa accommodations set over the lagoon and on the island. Yin Yang, one of the most famous surfing waves in Maldives, breaks just offshore. There are also beginner’s waves for guests wanting to experience the sport. Dolphins swim along the shores of Six Senses Laamu, where guests snorkel in the coral-rich house reef among Oriental Sweetlips, Parrotfish and Green Turtles. Our chefs from East and West prepare delicious dishes, many created from produce grown in the island's organic gardens. The sea breeze drifts among the rustic woods while memorable menus offered at each venue are enhanced by tropical vistas, from inspiring equatorial sunrises to romantic sunsets that dissolve into the evening sea. Set on the beach, the Six Senses Spa is surrounded by the island’s natural vegetation. Highly skilled Six Senses Spa therapists and visiting practitioners use natural products to provide a comprehensive range of award-winning signature treatments, rejuvenation and wellness specialties of the region and specialized holistic treatments.

Gaafu Alifu & Gaafu Dhaalu The administrative atolls of Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu form the divisions that collectively make up Huvadhoo Atoll, which is surrounded by the Huvadhoo Kandu, a stretch of water renown as the safest area for sea travel within the Maldives. This is also home to some of the most idyllic and secluded surfing sports of the country; Beacons, Castaway and Tiger Strips. The northern district of Huvadhoo is comprised of Gaafu Atoll, a selection of 82 islands out of which only 11 are inhabited by a population of 12,000. It boasts of several coral reefs and aesthetically appealing islands including the Atoll capital Villingili. In addition to the fishing and ice packing industry carried out mainly towards the south of the atoll, Gaafu is one of the few Atolls in the country that has thrived in agricultural production and shipping. Some areas of the atoll are renown for textile and rope weaving abilities. Gaafu Alifu acts as a pristine example of the cultural and historical diversity coloring the Maldives, housing several Buddhist sculptures dating back thousands of years. The island of Dhevvadhoo is also famous for the many ancient mosques scattered across its surface. With quite a few geographical advantages, trade routes and industrial diversity, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, comprises of 153 islands of which only 10 are populated, with 2 resorts. The capital is Thinadhoo. Systematically located within international waters, the local population of Gaafu Dhaalu was known to have traded extensively with Sri Lanka and India in the past, a focal point of the atoll’s history, as it was this independence and industry which caused the ‘southern rebellion’, a turning point in history that became a tragic event in which the troops from the capital burned the island of Thinadhoo, causing tragic loss of life and desecration of property. Though the island was left uninhabited for 4 years, it is one of the highly developed islands of the country today. There is a domestic airport in the island of Kaadhedhoo.

GNAVIYANI ATOLL

Gnaviyani & Seenu The equator, 0D0’N42D52’E, passes between Huvdhoo Atoll and Fuahmulah. Situated closest to the equator, in the Equatorial Channel, between Gaafu Dhaalu and Addu, the island of Fuvahmulah is surface-wise the smallest administrative atoll of Maldives. Also the single biggest island of the country, it is 5km long and 1 km wide. In terms of geography, Fuvahmulah is one of the most diverse and beautiful islands of the country, with tropical woodlands, wetlands, freshwater lakes, well-vegetated marshland areas and swamps, making this island a habitat to a rich diverse collection of plant and animal species. In addition to this, the white sandy beaches are filled with different variations of pebble textures. Administratively, there are 8 districts that act in a similar manner as that of islands in other atolls. In the past, due to the lack of a lagoon and being subjected to ocean swells, this island was often inaccessible to people from elsewhere. However, this isolation has been greatly reduced by recent construction of a harbor and an airport. Addu Atoll, previously known as Seenu Atoll is Addu City today. The southern extreme of Maldives, comprising of 32 islands, with 6 inhabited islands and 3 resorts have the most colorful coral reefs in the entire country, possessing a rich diversity of whale and dolphin collection. The capital is Hithadhoo, and is connected to six other islands by series of causeway and land reclamation. The dialect here is quite different to that of the one spoken in Malé. This is the main economic and administrative hub of the south and in terms of its size, wealth, education and importance, and bears the closest resemblance to the country’s capital. Addu has a history that has strongly influenced its present. The island Gan was used by the British during WWII as a Royal Air Force base and during their stay, they connected the islands with causeways, built an international airport along with industrial buildings and employed most of the population. History also states that Addu once (together with Huvadhoo) declared independence and recognized themselves as the United Suvadive Republic.
