COVER STORY

TAKING OWNERSHIP

As Linfield National’s Owner, Kleckner Constantly Trying To Make Improvements By Tom McNichol, Contributing Writer

I

t’s been 20 years since Robert Kleckner came on board as the head pro at Linfield National Golf Club, a relative newcomer to the golf scene in western Montgomery County at the time. But in those 20 years, Linfield National has changed from a golf course where Kleckner works to a golf course he owns. That’s right, Kleckner is fully invested in Linfield National in every possible way. Kleckner took over as the owner in 2012 and by 2016 he had garnered enough notice for the job he’s doing at Linfield National that the Philadelphia Section PGA named him its Golf Professional of the Year. The Philadelphia Section gives out a lot of awards for performance on the golf course, but Golf Professional of the Year is the highest award it hands out for performance off the golf course, in taking care of the business of promoting the game, for making it better. “This game has given me so much, my family, my place of business, it’s all part of it,” Kleckner said on a rare slow August Monday when Linfield National’s greens are being aerated, one of two aerations the course undergoes each year. “All of us who work in

10

tri-state golfer | Fall 2021

golf owe the game so much.” Kleckner has emerged as a leader among his fellow golf professionals and his fellow owners and operators of public courses in the region. When the state of Pennsylvania shut down golf courses when the coronavirus first appeared on the scene in March of 2020, it was the president of the Pennsylvania Golf Course Owners Association that club pros and public course owners called for answers. That would be Robert Kleckner. “We shut down March 15 and on March 16 we were figuring out what our next move was,” Kleckner said. With advocates like Kleckner working hard, golf courses opened for play again by May 1. The story had a happy ending with golf becoming one of the few recreational activities that could be pursued safely in the midst of the pandemic. The game exploded at every level in 2020, a boom that has carried over into 2021. Kleckner, though, never thought the game was dying before that. He has that much faith that the game will always be strong enough to survive. “I thought there were signs before the pandemic in January and February of 2020

Robert Kleckner

that things were picking up,” Kleckner said. The one thing that never really did come back was indoor simulators, an aspect of the game that has grown exponentially as the technology has continued to improve in the last decade. Kleckner was typically ahead of the curve in raising Linfield National’s game in the area of simulators. He was, however, leasing space to other simulator operators at Linfield National. Not anymore. Linfield National and Kleckner now own the simulator operation and Kleckner’s simulators have the

latest technology available. “We have Foresight simulators with laser projectors and launch monitors,” Kleckner said. “It really is state of the art.” Unlike the golf course outdoors, the indoor simulators have been shut down since March of 2020. Kleckner is looking forward to getting his simulator game back up to speed. It is an overlooked aspect of the game in an area of the country in which weather often makes the golf course outside unplayable during the winter. “We don’t have an outdoor driving range, Daylight Savings (time) to Daylight Savings (time) people use the simulators for practice,” Kleckner said. “We have leagues and people have golf-themed parties around the simulators. And you have people just using them as normal recreation. We’re looking forward to getting all that going again.” Kleckner also does a lot of club fittings and works with all the big names in the world of golf equipment. “Ping, Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway,” Kleckner said. There is still plenty of golf to be played outside at Linfield National in 2021 and Kleckner remains just as focused on his golf course, a Robert Sterritt design that measures 6,315 yards from the tips and plays to a par of 70. Sterritt’s work was completed and Linfield National opened in 1997. George Hoopes is Kleckner’s superintendent and the care and upkeep of the golf course has always been a priority for Kleckner, even more so after he took over as owner. “We’re a public facility, we’re presenting our product every day,” Kleckner said. Golfers old and new came out to play in 2020 when the realization hit that there just wasn’t a whole lot else to do. People who had maybe put the sticks away for a while came back to the game. Many others, young, old and in between, took up golf for the first time. The job for Kleckner is to keep them coming back and course condition is one very important part of that equation. “A lot of people came out after we reopened in 2020,” Kleckner said. “There was a lot of interest.” Linfield National is located smack in the middle of as competitive an area for publiccourse golf as you can find, but Kleckner is quick to point out that some golf courses have closed in recent years. He’s the kind of guy who is so focused on the general health of

the game that he hates to see any golf facility close, even if it benefits his bottom line. “Center Square, Limekiln, Locust Valley, Island Green, even Woody’s,” Kleckner said, ticking off facilities in the region that have closed their doors in recent years. Woody’s, a legendary par-3 course, was just outside of Norristown, but Kleckner said its closing brought an increase in traffic many miles to the west in Limerick Township. Kleckner has always been a big supporter of junior golf. Devon Prep has used Linfield National as its home base as long as Kleckner has been there. The SpringFord girls team (“watch out for these girls,” Kleckner said, “they are very talented!”) also uses Linfield National to play and practice. Summer golf camps have always been a part of Kleckner’s program and he was able to expand that this summer. Linfield National put together a PGA Junior League team this summer. Kleckner knows that the future of the game can be found in the many youngsters who are taking up golf. It is a future that Kleckner will tell you looks bright and hopeful. Like many golf courses, public and private, Kleckner has not seen some of the corporate and fund-raising golf outings come back to Linfield National in 2021, although the uptick in regular play has certainly softened that blow. “There are still certain restrictions, particularly when it comes to travel, that are holding companies back from having their outings again,” Kleckner said. The culmination of the fall at Linfield National is a traditional event it stages on the day before Thanksgiving. Mother Nature will let us know if we can continue playing

outside for a few more weeks after that. Between now and then, there will be a lot of days to tee it up outside at Linfield National and Kleckner is looking forward to seeing his indoor simulators fill the golf void when the weather turns bad. “We’re excited to reopen the indoor simulators,” Kleckner said. “I think our new technology will have people coming back.” Whatever goes on at Linfield National has Kleckner’s fingerprints on it. The guy acts like he owns the place because, well, he does own it. TSG For more information: 610 495 8455 LINFIELDNATIONAL.COM

DAY TRIPPIN’

Neshaminy Valley Is A Family Affair Charlie Schneider’s Dream Of A Public Course Continues To Thrive In Bucks County By Tom McNichol, Contributing Writer

C

harlie Schneider had accomplished just about all he could as a club pro in the Philadelphia Section PGA. He had qualified for 10 PGA Championships and three U.S. Opens, competing against the greatest players in the game in the 1940s and 1950s. He had been the head pro at Concord Country Club and led the pro shop at LuLu Country Club for 20 years. He won the Philadelphia Section Championship four times and was a runnerup in the Pennsylvania Open. But Charlie Schneider wasn’t finished in the game of golf, not by a long shot. Teaming up with sons Charlie Jr., George, Herman and Fred, Charlie Schneider left his mark on the game in a much more tangible way. Charlie Schneider and his sons built Neshaminy Valley Golf Club, 6,014 yards from the tips, in a little corner of Jamison in Warwick Township, Bucks County where the Neshaminy Creek winds its way through the property. It was a public golf course, open for anyone to play. But Charlie Schneider also envisioned Neshaminy Valley as something that would belong to the Schneider family, a way to give back to the game and to his family. Fifty years later that vision is still very much alive. On a warm Tuesday afternoon in August, golfers arriving in the Neshaminy Valley pro shop are greeted by Nancy Thomas, a daughter of George Schneider and a granddaughter of Charlie Schneider. Other days, it might be one of Thomas’ brothers,

12

tri-state golfer | Fall 2021

George or Jim Schneider, who is the president of the club. Nancy Thomas and George and Jim Schneider are also on Neshaminy Valley’s board of directors, as are other members of the Schneider family and their friends. If you’re looking for a family atmosphere as part of your public golf experience, you’ll certainly get that at Neshaminy Valley. “This is a family operation,” Thomas said. “It’s casual and a friendly atmosphere.” The weekend of July 16 and 17, they celebrated at Neshaminy Valley like it was 1971, when Charlie Schneider and his sons unveiled their new golf course. Charlie Schneider “We had a two-day weeks in the early days of the coronavirus tournament and we got some special hats and shirts, even some pandemic in 2020 when courses were closed. logoed golf balls, made up,” Nancy Thomas When it quickly became apparent that golf said. “We have a small membership, but was one of the few activities that people we’re primarily a daily-fee course. Between could do safely, golfers, those new to the our members and our regulars, we had a game and those who had always played and even a few who hadn’t picked up a club in a nice turnout.” Like public golf courses throughout while, flocked to the golf course. Somehow, the pandemic that had shut Pennsylvania, there was an anxious six

down the game for six weeks had turned into a positive development for golf. It wasn’t like golf was dying, but the renewed interest didn’t hurt. “Last year was good, it was great after we reopened after being closed for six weeks,” Thomas said. “We were pretty busy. A lot of people who were stuck at home got into golf. You couldn’t do very much else. People just wanted to get outside and do something. It seems like it’s continuing to be busy this year.” Team Schneider has been able to turn some of that extra business into some improvements at Neshaminy Valley. “We have a new patio,” Thomas said. “We put some new floors down in the clubhouse. We added a seeding mower for our maintenance crew.” For the last 20 years, the job of keeping Neshaminy Valley in good shape has belonged to Howard Vanderslice, better known as Chip. A golf course superintendent’s job is never done. The challenges come at you every day, but Vanderslice has been around long enough to know what it takes to keep his golf course in good condition, no matter what Mother Nature deals out. As long as she can remember, Neshaminy Valley and golf have been a part of Nancy Thomas’ life. She took up the game at age 10. She and her brothers played on the golf team at Central Bucks West. Thomas was an LPGA professional for 20 years, taught golf in Florida and Pennsylvania and other states in the Northeast and became a Class A teaching and club professional. She came home in 2000 to help run Neshaminy Valley. Thomas used to give lessons, but these days, helping out in the day-to-day operation of Neshaminy Valley keeps her busy. Jean Platt Spencer, an LPGA Teaching & Club Professional Division member who has been part of the Bucks County golf scene for years, offers lessons through Neshaminy Valley. There are certainly plenty of public-course options in the suburbs of Philadelphia, although Bucks County isn’t quite as competitive as areas in the western part of Montgomery County. The Bucks Club isn’t far away in Jamison, but Thomas thinks Neshaminy Valley is pretty affordable. “Our rates are pretty competitive,” Thomas said. “We seem to appeal to seniors with our 55-and-older specials Monday through Friday.” And there is that appeal that a family owned and operated course brings. Corporate ownership of public golf courses never seems to match the hard work and pride that a family brings to the table. That family pride is evident in the approach the Schneider family and friends bring to Neshaminy Valley. Charlie Schneider would approve. TSG

WRITER CUP TOURNAMENT

Annual Writer Cup Allows Fabulous Forsgate To Shine By Nate Oxman, Staff Writer

I

t makes perfect sense that a yearly competition pitting golf writers from the greater Philadelphia area against their brethren from the New York metropolitan area be staged right smackdab in the middle of the two cities. Fortunately for Chris Schiavone, his Metropolitan Golf Group operates Forsgate Country Club, which just so happens to sit pretty darn close to the geographic halfway point between Philly and NYC. So when a friend of Schiavone’s named Frank Quinn (co-founder of the former McDonald’s LPGA Championship) suggested the idea of a Ryder Cup for golf writers, Schiavone knew he had the perfect spot. In addition to its absolute location an hour away from each city, Forsgate CC, right off exit 8A of the New Jersey Turnpike, features two championship golf courses. That comes in pretty handy when Schiavone and the staff at Forsgate open the doors of their private palace to the public for a tournament or outing, allowing its membership another option to tee it up. Such is the case each summer when Forsgate hosts the Writer Cup and dozens of

The Par-5 Ninth, known as “Plateau,” perched on a hill guarded by several bunkers

golf scribes, with New Jersey writers joining the Philadelphia/PA team, and Connecticut and national writers the New York team, grind it out on the legendary Banks Course while the membership carries on next door at the club’s Palmer Course. The full-day event, executed with the assistance of public relations and marketing firm On Course Strategies, has been running for 13 years, beginning in the morning with a three-part Individual Skills Competition on Forsgate’s practice facility, where competitors accumulate a score based on their performance on a 100yard closest to the pin contest, a long putt,

and a short putt. Competitors get three attempts at each leg, earning 30 points on the closest to the pin contest for hitting the target green, 50 for hitting a smaller target circle within the green and 100 for holing a shot. Similarly, points are awarded for each putt on the practice green. This year’s skills contest was won by veteran sportswriter Hank Gola of the NY/National team. The talented Forsgate Academy professional staff, spearheaded by Director of Golf Carolyn McKenzie Andrews, followed with a golf clinic and Q & A session on Forsgate’s recentlyrevitalized and expanded practice facility.

L-R: Carolyn McKenzie Andrews – Director Of Golf, Tony Perla – Director Of Instruction, Mike Furey – Head Professional, Frank Esposito – Forsgate Staff Member

Andrews has ties to the Philadelphia area. She’s a winner of multiple WGAP championships and the daughter of Ted McKenzie, a Philadelphia Section PGA Hall of Fame member whose decorated career included time as head professional at Waynesborough Country Club and Stonewall. The clinic also featured new Director of Instruction Tony Perla, who spent time in the Philadelphia Section PGA at the Philadelphia Cricket Club and whose father, like Andrews’, was a longtime Philly area golf professional and member of the section’s Hall of Fame. Joining McKenzie Andrews and Perla were Forsgate staff members Frank Esposito, a former Champions Tour player and member of the New Jersey Section PGA Hall of Fame, Head Professional Mike Furey and Assistant Professional Justin Rohrig. The main event of the Writer Cup features individual stroke play at 90%

handicap with prizes for overall Low Gross and Low Net. The top 12 Net scores and top 5 Gross scores from each team make up the team total to determine a winner. This year that was the PA/NJ team after a total score of 1,259, 26 shots in front of the NY/ National team’s score of 1,285. New York’s George Willis carded a 77 for the low Gross score of the day. Competitors in this year’s event also included longtime Philadelphia Inquirer writer Joe Juliano and Golf Course Architect Stephen Kay, the consulting architect at Forsgate, whose local work in South Jersey includes Scotland Run, Blue Heron Pines, Harbor Pines and McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links. “We’re proud that we have such a strong group of the best golf writers who return year after year, and we believe we have a unique golf course to showcase,” said Schiavone, who culminates the Writer Cup each year with a steak and lobster dinner and awards ceremony in Forsgate’s Restaurant 37, one of several excellent dining options on property. Kay has worked with Forsgate’s superintendent, Don Asinski, to finetune the final creation of Charles “Steamshovel” Banks that dates back to 1931. Banks was an associate of Seth Raynor, who teamed with the great Charles Blair Macdonald to create some of the nation’s most prestigious

golf courses including National Golf Links of America and Chicago Golf Club. Like all three did throughout their careers, Banks used a rolling section of Forsgate’s property as the canvas for famous template holes based on ones found on some of golf ’s greatest courses overseas. The result is one of the most eyepopping designs on the East Coast, one buoyed by its incredible quartet of par 3s. In that group is the 17th, a “Biarritz” that features a green stretching 75 yards from front to back, with a swale 6 feet deep in the middle. Each of the Banks Course’s 18 greens have to be seen to be believed and the same can be said for the greenside bunkering, 20 feet from top to bottom in some spots like the purgatory bunker fronting the 18th green on the right side. It all adds up to a golf course, that if it wasn’t part of a Metropolitan Golf Association that includes many of the top courses in the nation in the aforementioned National Golf Links of America, Shinnecock Hills, Fishers Island, Winged Foot, Friars’ Head, etc. would get more of the national recognition it so very much deserves, especially as it celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. COURSE NEWS

Landis Creek Adds More Changes With Black Top Cart Paths On and Off Course By Joe Burkhardt, Publisher

Meat Market

Deli & Full Service Catering

Formerly Known as “Limerick Golf Club,” Landis Creek Golf Course, located 15 minutes outside of King Of Prussia off the Limerick exit off 422 West on Lewis Road continues to make changes with more future plans in the works. The Par 70 Rye grass layout designed by William Gordon, ASGCA is turning into a course that golfers are flocking back to in droves with the changes to the course, sports bar venue and banquet facility that can host up to 200 golfers with the enclosed overhead patio that also has entertainment not only for golfers, but families looking for an outside venue with the kids. Also the value you get here for a round of golf compared to other courses in the Montgomery County heavy populated golf area is second to none. The latest changes that will be completed soon is black top cart paths being installed throughout the entire golf course as well as the parking lots and surrounding clubhouse. The 8 foot wide cart paths that now can fit carts side by side or enough room for your favorite beverage cart to pull up along side of you is as owner Brian Lutz said “ a game changer” from the old stone dirt cart paths that would blow back sand into the cart behind you. Landis Creek has been owned and operated since 2014 by Brian and Jean Lutz and both team up to is what is making Landis Creek a unique and dynamic venue with Brian handling the golf side and changes to the course and Jean operating a stellar first class banquet operation. My recommendation is book your tee times early and your banquet, wedding, birthday parties, baby showers and outings a lot earlier. Visit landiscreekgolfclub.com or call 610.495.6945 to BOOK your next tee time or banquet event.

Golf Around The World

Golf Club

Pennsylvania’s Best 36 Holes

Did you know that 82% of countries worldwide have golf courses – from American Samoa to Zambia? Or that there are more than 38,000 courses globally? Only 7-Eleven and Subway have more physical business locations around the world, although they reach far fewer countries.1 NGF maintains the official database of golf courses worldwide. A dedicated team verifies the operational status of all golf facilities – on a 12-month cycle within the U.S., and every 24 months globally.2 New courses in planning and under construction are also tracked. Every two years, the R&A releases “Golf Around the World,” a publication based on the NGF database. This free report, available for digital download here, looks at the game’s global reach through the lens of worldwide supply -- both existing courses and those under development. In 2020 golf was played in 206 of the 251 countries and dependent territories recognized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). There’s even a 9-holer on Christmas Island, an Australian outpost in the Indian Ocean that has a local rule regarding “robber” land crabs known to take golf balls. While golf is widely dispersed, it also remains highly concentrated, with 80% of courses in the top 10 best-supplied countries. Home to 42% of world supply, the U.S. is far and away the global leader with 16,000+ golf courses. Japan (3,140) and the U.K. (3,101) are neck and neck in second and third place. There’s much more in the R&A report, including which regions have the most golf courses and golf holes compared to population, the most golf courses compared to land area, and the most golf course projects in development. If you are as consumed by wanderlust as you are by golf, you’ll find it to be inspiring reading.

The reverse taper blade design in the 56°, 58° and 60° lofts of the TW-W21 Wedge delivers a high CG that gradually increases in thickness from bottom-to-top, and laterally, from heel-totoe, to ensure the ball grips to the club face longer, especially on high face strikes. A flat blade design in the 48°, 50°, 52° and 54° lofted wedges creates a consistent thickness throughout for a mid-low CG, optimal spin and precise distance control on full shots. Three grinds deliver versatility for golfers seeking a wedge that performs at the highest level in varying turf conditions and angles of attack into the ball. The I-Sole in the 48°, 50°, 52° and 54° lofts feature a slight trailing edge relief across the back of the blade for full sole performance with

improved turf interaction at impact. The C-Sole grind in the 56°, 58° and 60° lofts deliver aggressive heel and toe trailing edge relief with a flat bounce surface for shot making versatility. This grind suits those golfers who like to open the club face and use their skill and creativity around the green. The S-Sole is available in the 58° and 60° higher-lofted wedges and features four-way relief for shot making with added forgiveness. Wider, fuller soles ensure this grind is effective across a variety of turf conditions, particularly from bunkers. Holistically engineered with the TW-W21 club head in Sakata, Japan, the VIZARD IB-105 WEDGE graphite shaft delivers faster dynamic face closure for a low launch at impact, as well as increased contact time between the ball and the club face for more spin. For golfers who prefer the trusted feel of a steel shaft, the Nippon N.S. PRO MODUS3 115 WEDGE shaft is also available as a stock offering. Visit www.honmagolf.com for more details.

Tee It Forward – Ten Years Later By Joseph F. Beditz, PhD., National Golf Foundation

Ten years ago, the PGA of America and the USGA announced a joint initiative encouraging golfers to play from tees that best suited their game. Tee It Forward was inspired by the thinking of Barney Adams, founder of Adams Golf, who argued many golfers were playing from tees that were too long given how far they hit their drives. The concept and the campaign were well received. Golf editorial support was widespread and a television PSA featuring Jack Nicklaus spoke to golfers. Recently, NGF surveyed Core golfers and learned that 73% could recall Tee It Forward, but only 30% had actually moved up in the past 5-10 years – most of them over the age of 50. Certainly not everyone needed to make a jump, but the ones who did, and followed the campaign’s advice, have almost unanimously enjoyed the benefits. Threequarters say their scores improved, and even more (80%) say they’ve had more fun. It’s telling that a strong majority of Core golfers (over 80%) believe that golfers playing from inappropriate tees is a “big problem.” Our analysis

24

tri-state golfer | Fall 2021

would seem to support this sentiment – to a certain extent, at least – with as many as a third of core golfers (~4MM) currently playing from tees that are too long for them. So why don’t more golfers move up? Why hasn’t a great idea like Tee It Forward caught on more than it has? Because behavioral changes in consumers and operators require a lot of time, effort and intervention. National advertising helps create needed awareness, but is insufficient to overcome the inertiae of ego, convenience and conformity, which golfers – virtually all of them – willingly admit stand in the way. When the Tee It Forward campaign was launched, Barney Adams said that success would be a long and arduous process. He got the arduous part right. But like some other well-intentioned industry initiatives, this one was, unfortunately, too short-lived. Still, it should be noted that some golf course operators are having success in getting their customers to play the correct tees. Cathy Harbin

for one, with an age-based effort at her facility in Paris, TX, and the Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines, NC, which created a tee system based on driving distance. Others can learn from them or come up with their own creative solutions. If you’re an operator who’s had success in getting customers to “play the right tees,” or you’re interested in trying to implement an effort, we’d love to hear from you. Four out of five core golfers suggest they are open to experimenting with forward tees. Let’s discuss more ways to encourage (or influence) them to act.

Boyne’s Legendary Bernie Friedrich Among 2021 Michigan PGA Special Award Winners Bernie Friedrich, Senior Vice President of Golf at BOYNE Resorts, has captured the first Golf Executive of the Year award by the Michigan PGA. The honor bestows special recognition on a PGA Golf Professional who has performed outstanding services for a multiple facility/ course management/ownership operation, allied association, or golf industry executive management position. As one of the highest honors the PGA can bestow, candidates must possess outstanding qualities of leadership, vision, courage, strong moral character, and a substantial record of service to the Association and the game of golf. “I am thrilled to receive this award,” says Friedrich, a 38-year PGA member who oversees BOYNE Golf ’s 13 courses and semi-private clubs in Michigan, Maine, and Montana that includes all staff, course agronomy and marketing nationwide plus two golf membership groups—Bay Harbor Golf Club and Country Club of Boyne.

“It’s such an honor to be recognized for helping BOYNE become the premier golf destination in the Midwest. Our staff here is best-in-class and this award is every bit representative of their hard work as much as mine.” The Schondorf, Germany native moved to Michigan as a young boy. He’s now in his 46th year working at Boyne, where he started as a golf professional. He was inducted into the Michigan PGA Hall of Fame in 2019, when he was also awarded the Bill Strausbaugh Award that recognizes a top PGA member for outstanding integrity and character, a significant contribution through mentoring fellow PGA professionals, and maintaining a high level of service, values and image within the organization. In addition, the Michigan PGA also honored him as the Professional of the Year twice (1998, 2001), and was recognized five times as Merchandiser of the Year (1990, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996). He also serves

on the Michigan PGA Employment Committee. Friedrich is also a member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Bernie Friedrich Fame and received the Lyle Leeke Distinguished Service Award (2018) from the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association (MGCOA) where he also serves on their Board of Directors. TALAMORE Why Play No.2 When You Can Play #1

Like Donald Ross, who spent roughly 30 years fine-tuning his work on Pinehurst No. 2, those at the helm of the Talamore Golf Resort less than five miles away in Southern Pines have spent the last three decades working tirelessly to make its all-encompassing acreage a pure oasis for golf vacationers of all sorts. Its proof of success is in Golf Advisor’s annual Golfers’ Choice rankings of the best golf courses in the U.S. For Talamore Golf Resort, it was total domination, highlighted by its position as the No. 1 public golf course in North Carolina. To add icing on the cake, Mid South Club, Talamore’s sister course, was just voted the Best Public/Semi-Private Course in the Sandhills. Two #1 golf courses... both under the same umbrella...both at the center of Talamore’s golf vacation paradise. Nate Oxman, Staff Writer - Tri-State Golfer Magazine

Taking A Members Trip or Buddies Trip

Pinehurst, Talamore And Mid South Accommodations Are A Trifecta That Should Be On Your List By Joe Burkhardt, Publisher

Talamore’s Mid South Course

I

hadn’t been to Pinehurst, North Carolina in several years. So when I got an email back in January about a members’ trip to Talamore golf Resort and the Mid South Club this spring, I jumped at the chance to return Coming down from the peak of the pandemic, after being cooped up and masked up for more than a year, after golf was shut down for six weeks in the early stages and after being unable to travel at all, I needed to get away. Thankfully, it became apparent that golf was one of the few activities that people could do safely and I was one of those golfers - those new to the game, those who had always played, and even some who hadn’t picked up a club in a while - who helped this great game suddenly boom bigger than during the Tiger era. It was a no-brainer for me, especially since I hadn’t taken advantage of one of Talamore’s great members’ trips yet. I knew it would be a great way to get to know some of the other guys I hadn’t teed it up with yet. You learn there is a certain camaraderie on these trips, not to mention the banter, laughs and characters you always find in a group of guys. Good ones, I might add. My first day down south we checked in and stayed at the Talamore Golf Resort Villas. These are beautifully-constructed

brick condominiums that have grown to be able to accommodate over 400 golfers. The two- and three-bedroom villas are known as one of the most successful condominium accommodation programs in the Village of Pinehurst area thanks to an impressive list of amenities. Inside, there’s everything you could ask for including a full kitchen, full-sized beds, spacious living and dining rooms and multiple bathrooms. Outside, there is direct access to Reservoir Park, which features 165 acres of open space including a lake with fishing and boating, disc golf, and picnic tables, as well as the Moore County Greenway Trails that are available for that early morning run, walk or bike.

All of that put me in a good frame of mind going into our time on the golf course, where I was treated to a trifecta to come back to for years to come. I had recently read (in these very pages mind you) that the New Course at Talamore golf Resort had just been listed in Golf Advisor’s annual Golfers’ Choice rankings as the #1 public course in North Carolina, the #9 public course in the U.S. and the #22 public course in the U.S. for Course Conditions. Talamore’s sister club, the Arnold Palmer designed Mid South Club, was ranked as #16 in North Carolina. Really? I thought to myself. I had to see this for myself. Afterward, I can without a doubt tell you that both golf courses give their guests everything you want and then some. The course conditions at the New course were some of the best I had ever seen, especially the greens that were completely redone as part of a multimillion dollar remastering of a 1991 Rees Jones design in 2016. T he h ig h ly-accl aime d proj e c t focused heavily on increasing playability, accomplished by converting those greens

from bent grass to Champion Bermuda to provide consistently pristine putting surfaces while expanding them by 20 percent to fill “The Open Doctor’s” original pads and adding 60-inch TifEagle Bermuda collars. In addition, 62 bunkers were removed and landing areas both off the tee and around the green were widened. I also loved the Scottish golf-style bunkers, 12 of them in all, that were added in an effort to continue to help Talamore stand tall among its neighbors in the golf-rich Pinehurst region. The Mid South Club, a private club just down the road that opens its doors to the public who book certain golf packages, has been a favorite since opening in 1993. The beautiful course set among towering longleaf pines didn’t disappoint. It’s the only Arnold Palmer signature design in the Sandhills and it has benefited from a similar facelift in 2017, that included the expansion of its greens by 40 percent and the conversion of its putting surfaces from bent to Champion Bermuda. Overall, the trip was just what we all needed: a chance to escape to a resort that offers everything a golfer (and even a nongolfing spouse) could ever want: fantastic golf and fantastic accommodations all at a fantastic value. I highly recommend you put this trifecta on your golf trip bucket list. And if you do, send a story about your trip to me at tristategolf@gmail.com and you may just see it in print here. well coming to play golf here. The Inn at Bay Harbor: This is a Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel and is one of the most beautiful, iconic hotels. In addition to the trendy and contemporary look to the 111 rooms at The Inn at Bay Harbor you get great views of Little Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan in the distance. On this property you can also stay in one of the 22 modern lakeside cottages. All the comforts of home and then some have been incorporated into every single room and cottage at the Inn at Bay Harbor. The views at breakfast from the Sagamore Restaurant are eye appealing and dinner at Vintage Chop House on the deck watching the sun set around 9:45 in the evening over Lake Michigan with a glass of wine is the perfect ending to a great day. Also don’t forget to visit the nearby Bay Harbor Lake Marina. It’s like a small town in itself of boats, shopping, outdoor dining, music that you will very much enjoy. As for off-property dining options, I recommend Teddy Griffin’s Roadhouse as the best

Harbor Springs bar & grille. It has a warm ambience of Irish lore with their great food and drink. Crooked Tree Cottages: This is where our group stayed located at The 18-hole Crooked Tree Golf Club that is situated high on the bluffs overlooking The Inn at Bay Harbor. We stayed alongside the 9th and 18th hole double green at Crooked Tree which made for some late night shenanigans for any buddies trip. These cottages were quaint and very nice and spacious 3 bedroom, two bath cottages. They

come with all the amenities you could want from a full kitchen, coffee pot, large screen TV, comfortable beds, washer/dryer and a spacious living room to host a U.S. Open pairings party the night before the U.S. Open as we did. These were very comfortable and very enjoyable for any group to stay at. The Heather: This is the oldest course in the BOYNE treasure chest. It was opened in 1966 and was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. This course received the high honor in 2019 as the 2019 National Golf Course Operators Association Course of the Year. The Heather, like a good bottle of wine, just keeps getting better with age and finishes with a strong downhill Par 4 where a good drive leaves you with a carry over a large lake guarding the front of the green.

GOLF TRAVEL Arthur Hills: This course as you might come to expect was designed by Arthur Hills. This is just a solid golf course especially from holes starting with the 5th, 10th, 13th picturesque and finishing with a dogleg 18th challenging Par 5. The 5th is called “White Pine Boulevard” with the intentional alignment of the white pine trees configuration that surrounds the putting surface that leaves a stadium-like feel as you play this hole. When you stand on the 13th tee, you can see at least 7,000 acres of non-inhabited forest in the distance This hole will be stored in the memory bank. The Par-5 18th at the Hills hugs the perimeter of the lake. Two strong shots can give you an eagle putt, but know where to leave it on your 3rd because it can be a tough up and down. This course was also the setting for Big Break X on the Golf Channel. Donald Ross Memorial: This course is a creative collection of some of Ross’s finest holes from a few of his classic course designs. This course as our buddies trip did is a great start to 4 rounds of golf on these four great golf courses we played that I highly recommend. In all 14 courses were used to
