Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is a visually stunning collection of masterpiece courses, carved out of the hills, valleys, and marshes of Alabama. A total of 468 holes on 26 courses provides an unforgettable experience to golfers looking for something really special on their next golf vacation. When Alabama’s RTJ Golf Trail opened in 1992, the golf vacation experience changed. Traveling all around Alabama, golf groups try to play as many courses in a trip as possible, and they come back year after year to fit in a few more of the eleven sites and eight hotels sprinkled around the state.

Ross Bridge, Hoover/Birmingham

Just outside Birmingham, located a few miles from Oxmoor Valley is the Trail’s only single course facility. Measuring 8,191 yards, the stadium-style course offers spectacular views and a “big-shouldered, muscular” layout. It’s not for the weak at heart. But the on-site Renaissance Ross Bridge Resort and Spa offers a nice respite from a challenging day on the links.

The Shoals, Muscle Shoals/Florence

The Shoals offers 36 holes in northwest Alabama. The Fighting Joe course, named the best new course by GOLF® in 2005, runs along the Tennessee River and measures 8,072 yards. Length will present the biggest challenge, as the rolling fairways are pretty straightforward. The Schoolmaster course is a bit more challenging with more narrow fairways and protected greens.

Hampton Cove, Huntsville

This northern site on the Trail is one of the most unique. It features two completely different championship layouts and an 18-hole links-style Short Course. The Highlands features beautiful vegetation and lots of elevation changes, while the River is flat, yet scenic, as it winds its way along the Flint River. It is also the only RTJ design with no bunkers.

8

Silver Lakes, Anniston/Gadsden

Located amidst the scenic splendor of the Talladega National Forest, Silver Lakes sports three of the most beautiful and challenging nines. Heartbreaker is considered the toughest nine on the Trail; Backbreaker offers breathtaking vistas; and Mindbreaker demands precision. The nine-hole Short Course features water on seven holes.

Grand National, Auburn/Opelika

This first Trail facility to open for play was praised by Mr. Jones himself as the greatest site for a golf course he had ever seen. The facility boasts two of the most challenging courses on the Trail, Links and Lake, an exciting Short Course and an on-site AAA four-diamond Marriott hotel. Plus, the Lake Course has hosted both the PGA TOUR and NCAA Championships.

Oxmoor Valley, Birmingham

This site combines the spectacular views and tremendous elevational changes of the Ridge Course with the peaceful serenity of the Valley Course. The Ridge is densely wooded with rolling fairways and perfectly maintained greens. The Valley offers sparkling lakes and a challenging uphill finishing hole. There’s also a fun and challenging 9-Hole, Par 3 Course.

Capitol Hill, Prattville

This locale, just north of Montgomery, has three 18-hole full length courses. The Senator, a links course with huge pot bunkers and soaring mounds, hosts the LPGA’s future players each fall; the Legislator features tall pines and the famous Sky Bridge; and the Judge offers one of the most spectacular first tee shots anywhere.

9

Cambrian Ridge, Greenville

South of the capital, this complex is one of the true jewels of the Trail. The Canyon nine’s changes in elevation include a 200foot drop from tee to fairway; Sherling runs along the lake and features a double-green on nine; and Loblolly boasts stately pines and undulating fairways. The site is a favorite of families and will host its 25th Annual Father/Son Championship in 2023.

Magnolia Grove, Mobile

Having hosted the LPGA for sixteen years, the Crossings course is well-known to golfing fans around the world. The hilly terrain and elevated greens are a challenge. The 18-hole Falls course features massive bunkers and exciting greens. Both were recently renovated to create more player friendly layouts. The Short Course is an exciting test of golf as well.

Highland Oaks, Dothan

In Alabama’s southeast corner, this site is known for its tremendous length and shimmering lakes. The Marshwood nine’spar-5 sixth was the first hole on the Trail to surpass 700 yards; Highlands is wide open but many lakes come into play; and Magnolia features the massive, signature trees and a 1,000 foot wooden bridge. The nine-hole Short Course is exciting too.

Lakewood Club, Point Clear

The Lakewood Club at The Grand Hotel was built in 1947. Since becoming a member of the RTJ Golf Trail, it has been updated to stand the test of time. Yet, its 36 holes showcase fairways lined with 200-year-old oaks and the signature hole is the 14th on the Azalea Course with its peninsula green. The club recently hosted the 59th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.

Alabama Golf Resorts & Spas

Splendid golf resorts and lavish spas have sprung up all around Alabama to entice golf travelers to experience Southern hospitality at its best. Along with a variety of more rustic stay and play options, golf groups can choose value and charm, luxury and refinement, or a combination of all that makes Alabama such a special golf and travel destination.

In keeping with its goal of offering a truly unique golf travel experience, Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail offers eight luxurious hotels around the state, including four golf resorts. Six of the properties in this RTJ Hotel and Resort Collection include award-

winning European-style spas as part of the RTJ Spa Trail.

The Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa in Florence is located across the Tennessee River from the 36-hole RTJ Golf Trail at the Shoals. In addition to the spa, hotel amenities include a state-ofthe-art fitness center, outdoor resort pool complex, and full convention and meeting facilities. The dining and entertainment offerings are 360º Grille, the state’s only revolving restaurant with sweeping views, and nightly live music in Swampers, named for FAME Studio’s house band in Muscle Shoals.

state’s most highly-regarded resort.

Travel+Leisure ranked Ross Bridge among the top hotels in the world and Conde Nast Traveler named it among the best hotel spas. The property features fine dining, a clubhouse sports bar, lobby lounge, the spa, spacious fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, meeting and banquet facilities and the 8,200-yard RTJ Golf Trail course. Most notably, the exterior resembles a Scottish castle with soaring turrets and stonework, and at dusk each day, a lone bagpiper plays his way around the hotel, paying tribute to the birthplace of golf.

Overlooking the 17th fairway of the Senator Course, the Prattville Marriott

Hotel & Conference Center at Capitol Hill was the first lodging built directly on the RTJ Golf Trail. It features guest rooms, plus two eight-bedroom villas, unique to the Trail. Its restaurant serves Southern fare and its lounge incorporates an outdoor fire pit. Another nearby lodging option is the RTJ Golf Trail’s Renaissance Hotel & Spa in downtown Montgomery.

The Marriott at Grand National near the Georgia border, 90 miles from the Atlanta airport, is another one of the original resorts along the Trail. With 54 holes of RTJ golf right in its backyard and the recent addition of its top-rated, three-story spa, it is the perfect option

Rounding out the resorts on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is the newly-renovated Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa on Mobile Bay. It is a member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. The all-in-one destination features a full-service spa, two renovated RTJ Golf Trail courses at Lakewood Club, seven restaurants and lounges, two beaches, multiple pools and lots of meeting space.

Finally, RTJ Golf Trail stay and play options in downtown Mobile include the

historic Renaissance Battle House with a luxurious spa and fun, streetfront pub and Renaissance Riverview adjacent to the convention center with rooftop pool and views of the Mobile River.

Pursell Farms, set in the Alabama countryside south of Birmingham, is one of the most unique destinations in the South. This boutique resort offers stay and play golf packages in several four bedroom, luxurious cottages with kitchenettes, in a fully-furnished eight bedroom lodge and in their 40-room first-class Inn. Along with its 18-hole FarmLinks Golf Club, the resort features a restaurant and pub, high-tech meeting space, a well-appointed spa, outdoor

pool, fitness facilities, plus fly-fishing, hunting and sporting clays at their own Orvis® Shooting Grounds.

Gulf Shores is home to the state’s only golf resort directly on the Gulf of Mexico. Kiva Dunes Golf & Beach Resort offers beachfront homes plus condos along the 18th fairway of the Jerry Pate-designed course and above the 6-story clubhouse. The resort also offers a restaurant and three outdoor pools, including one with a tiki bar along its own private beach.

Also in Gulf Shores, Peninsula and Craft Farms, with their multiple golf courses, accommodate golf groups in condos along their respective fairways.

The laid-back golf resort options are all located in the mountains of north Alabama. Lake Guntersville State Park, with its 18-hole golf course, resort inn and restaurant, is located along the Tennessee River. Joe Wheeler State Park features 18 holes of golf, resort lodge and restaurant on the shores of Wheeler Lake. Each also offers a full-service marina, camping, lakeside cottages and meeting facilities. Goose Pond Colony Resort in Scottsboro boasts 36 holes of golf, lakefront cabins, and a marina with dockside seafood restaurant.

Come stay and play in Alabama to experience all of the luxury, serenity, beauty and charm we have to offer.

North Region

The fertile valleys, rolling hillsides, and pristine lakes of North Alabama have provided golf course architects with an amazing pallette from which to create their designs.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail sites in the region are truly unique. In the northwest corner, the cities of Muscle Shoals, Florence, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia form the area collectively known as “the Shoals.” The Shoals is best known as the "Hit Recording Capital of the World" since many of the top songs of the 60s and 70s were recorded here.

The RTJ Golf Trail at the Shoals features two championship courses. The Fighting Joe was the first Trail

course to reach over 8,000 yards, yet the links-style layout is pretty straightforward. The more traditional layout found on Schoolmaster requires thoughtful strategy and precision. Situated along the banks of the Tennessee River, many of the holes, plus the clubhouse, offer spectacular panoramic views. A more picturesque site would be hard to find. Additionally, one of the eight hotels in the RTJ Golf Trail Resort Collection is located across the river in Florence - the Marriott Shoals Hotel & Spa. The Shoals is typical of Alabama’s Golf Trail – great value, consistent conditioning, challenging golf, and great customer service.

For more information, call (334) 242-4169 or visit our website at www.GolfAlabama.org

18
RTJ Golf Trail at The Shoals, Muscle Shoals/Florence

Also in the Shoals area, Cypress Lakes is another fun test of golf. The facility features a beautiful championship course with new Mini Verde greens. And just down the road is one of the four Alabama State Park golf courses at Joe Wheeler State Park in Rogersville. It offers an 18-hole course, designed by Alabama’s own Earl Stone. One of Stone’s early efforts, it’s a fun open course that’s also got some bite from the tips.

Farther east in Decatur, Point Mallard Park is a complete family recreational facility, offering great outdoor activities. The 750-acre park lies hidden among North Alabama's densely wooded pines and has camping, hiking trails, biking trails and an 18-hole championship golf course. The Point Mallard Golf Course is almost 7,000 yards long from the tips and offers exceptional conditioning and a fair test of golf. Most notably, it’s been called the “best value in North Alabama” by a Yelp reviewer.

Hampton Cove in Huntsville is the other RTJ Golf Trail site in the most northern part of the state. Two totally different experiences await at Hampton Cove with the Highlands and the River courses. The Highlands is a Scottish-links style course where Japanese black pines, massive oaks, dogwoods and crepe myrtle abound. It’s very picturesque, even featuring an old mule barn adjacent to the 5th hole that has become quite a conversation piece over the years. And the River Course has the distinction of being the only Robert Trent Jones design without a single bunker. The course was laid out on a former soybean plantation at the edge of the Flint River flood plain. Great care was used to incorporate the wonders of Mother Nature into the scheme of things, showcased by the enormous old oak tree behind the 18th green, reputedly over 275 years old!

Northeast of Huntsville is one of the more popular settings for golf at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro.

19

Located on the banks of Lake Guntersville, this laid-back resort features two 18-hole championship golf courses, cozy lakeside cottages, a lodge,

restaurant, campground, and fullservice marina. The Lake course is a George Cobb design that sports views of the water from every hole. The Plantation course is known for pristine greens, open fairways and hazards. Guntersville, just a bit south of Scottsboro, is the locale of three championship golf courses. The 18 masterfully-crafted holes at Gunter’s Landing cover just under 6,900 yards and offer awe-inspiring beauty. Eagle’s Nest Golf Club overlooks beautiful Lake Guntersville and is located at the state park. It’s fairly traditional in design with water coming into play

The scenic course is nestled in the rolling Appalachian foothills. It is a tree-lined layout with narrow Bermuda fairways and large undulating Bentgrass greens.

Scenic beauty paired with the topographical challenges play a distinct role in the golf experiences in the region. Golfer travelers will find just the right course for their skill level, budget and playing style with the beautiful Alabama mountains, rivers and lakes as their backdrop.

Central Region

Golf locales in this region are a dichotomy of sorts, featuring both the bustling nightlife of the state’s largest city and many laid-back, small towns with a slower pace. Those two distinct golf vacation styles are highlighted by the fact that the top two GolfWeek’s “best courses you can play” in Alabama are located in the region. They are Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa near Birmingham and Pursell Farms in Sylacauga. Both resorts offer 18 holes of golf and they were named in GOLF® magazine’s inaugural “best resort for buddies” list. Alabama’s largest city, Birmingham, has certainly become golf central, with

so many great courses from which to choose. And the RTJ Golf Trail’s Ross Bridge leads the way. The 8,191-yard golf course is the fifth longest in the world. The layout flows in a clover leaf fashion, returning to a central locale no fewer than five times. Even with its intimidating length from the back tees, elevational changes, and water holes, Ross Bridge is still a welcoming resort course at heart with wide fairways and receptive greens.

Situated just a mile away from Ross Bridge is Oxmoor Valley, the RTJ Golf Trail’s first Birmingham site. It offers two unique full-length courses, The Ridge and The Valley, plus an

exciting new 9-hole, par 3 course called The Backyard. The Ridge Course has tight tree-lined fairways and huge changes in elevation, while the Valley Course is more open off the tee with its gently, rolling fairways and meticulously landscaped backdrop.

Located in the historic Highlands neighborhood of Birmingham, sits Alabama’s oldest golf course, Highland Park. The course has been the site of many important golf tournaments including one of Bobby Jones' first victories and boasts smooth Bentgrass greens and rolling terrain. Most notably, GOLF® Magazine named Highland Park to its “30 best U.S. municipal golf courses” list in 2021.

Just south of Birmingham in Pelham is Ballantrae Golf Club. This Bob Cupp-designed course meanders through a scenic valley, surrounded by gorgeous woodlands and breathtaking views. The clubhouse resembles a Scottish manor and the club is the home of the Dixie Section of the PGA.

Also in Pelham, the Alabama State Parks boast the 18-hole championship course at Oak Mountain State Park. The Oaks Golf Club is another Earl Stone design, featuring Bermuda greens and many challenging dogleg holes.

Playing 7,000 yards from the back tees, FarmLinks at Pursell Farms, located southeast of Birmingham in the small town of Sylacauga, is the world’s first "research & demonstration" golf course. The facility was built to experiment with and showcase golf course machinery, irrigation systems, and fertilizer to visiting course superintendents. In addition to its number one ranking from Golfweek, many golfers who have played the course and submitted reviews on GolfAdvisor have rated FarmLinks the best course in the state.

Just west of Greater Birmingham, Tuscaloosa is home to an awardwinning golf course. The Ol’ Colony Golf Complex offers an 18-hole Jerry Pate design. It features rolling hills, tall

pines and live oaks, plus large fairway bunkers and water throughout. It’s been named a “Best Municipal Course” by several golf publications.

About an hour northeast of Birmingham, between Anniston and Gadsden, lies the RTJ Golf Trail at Silver Lakes. The site is made up of three tough 9-hole courses, suitably named Mindbreaker, Backbreaker and Heartbreaker, all offering magnificent views to soothe the ego.

Twin Bridges, located along the Coosa River in Gadsden is a Coore-

Crenshaw design was named a “Best New Course” by Golf Digest upon opening. The 6,800-yard course challenges golfers with its rolling fairways and strategic bunkers.

The Central Region, has a great variety of courses, plus historic sites and culinary adventures, around which to build an exciting golf trip.

OFF THE COURSE...

Don’t miss Birmingham’s Civil Rights Institute, Dread River Distillery and Barber Motorsports Park; Mercedes Benz Visitor Center and the Paul W. Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa; Noccalula Falls Park and Back Forty Beer Company in Gadsden, one of Alabama’s first craft breweries; and Talladega Superspeedway. Sample the food at Dreamland BBQ in Tuscaloosa; Harp & Clover or Blackstone Pub in Gadsden; Jim ‘N Nick’s BBQ in Cullman; and the James Beard award-winning Highlands Bar & Grill, Hot and Hot Fish Club, Irondale Cafe, the inspiration for the cafe in Fried Green Tomatoes, and Automatic Seafood & Oysters, home to James Beard’s 2022 Best Chef in the South, all located in Birmingham. South Region

East-central and southeastern Alabama come together to form the South Region of the state, where you can experience the state’s unique civil rights history, culture, waterways and four RTJ Trail facilities.

Golf Digest once named Auburn-Opelika the “Most GolferFriendly” city in America. This was due in large part to Grand National, the first complex to open along the RTJ Golf Trail. Located about 90 miles southwest of the Atlanta airport, the 54 holes at Grand National were thought to be the favorite site of Robert Trent Jones himself. The Links Course features, arguably, the finest finishing

hole on the Trail. The drive on this par 4 must carry the corner of the lake, while the approach must reach a pedestal green protected by boulders. Golf Digest named Links in its top ten courses in Alabama. Twelve holes on the Lake Course hug the shoreline and its 230-yard, island green 15th has been called “the single prettiest hole on the Trail.” Both courses are included in Golfweek’s rankings of the top courses in the state, Grand National’s Short Course is among the best and most affordable par-3 courses in the U.S.

three full length courses are aptly called The Judge, The Senator, and The Legislator. GOLF® Magazine once named the Judge one of 10 public courses worthy of hosting a U.S. Open and it’s the highest ranked public course on Golf Digest’s most recent “best golf courses in Alabama” list. The course offers a stunning view on the first tee, 200 feet above the fairway overlooking the Alabama River. The Legislator is hilly and more traditional. The Senator is a Scottish links-style course with 160 pot bunkers and mounds reaching up to 40 feet.

Located in Greenville, 40 miles south of Montgomery, the RTJ Golf Trail at Cambrian Ridge is set along the scenic southernmost edge of the Appalachian foothills. The changes in elevation are extraordinary and the three championship 9-hole courses offer an unforgettable experience. In fact, the Sherling/Canyon combination is ranked fifth in Golfweek’s “best golf courses you can play” in Alabama.

Situated in the southeast corner of the state, the RTJ Golf Trail at Highland Oaks offers 36 holes of golf. One of the regulation length courses, Marshwood, is home to a monstrous par-5 boasting 701 yards; and another, Magnolia, features the longest bridge on the Trail - over 1,000 feet spanning the marshes and wetlands so prevalent in the area.

The South Region’s history and culinary treasures, plus four Trail sites, make it the perfect home base for an Alabama golf vacation.

Gulf Region

In the Gulf Region of Alabama, experience the history and nightlife of Mobile or the sugar-white sands and clear, blue waters of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

Mobile’s premier golfing facility is the 54-hole RTJ Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove. The Crossings Course is very hilly, featuring numerous pulpit bunkers, huge cloverleaf bunkers, and undulating greens that demand extreme caution. It’s a shotmakers course that demands accuracy both from the tee and at approach. Additionally, the course played host to the LPGA for many years. The Falls Course features one of the most talked-about holes on the

entire Trail - the par-five, 570-yard 10th, featuring a waterfall that cascades just below the contoured green. It isn’t as hilly as the Crossings, but it plays a bit longer from the tips. The 18-hole Short Course at Magnolia Grove is considered one of the most challenging on the entire RTJ Golf Trail.

On the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay are two of legendary Alabama architect Earl Stone’s most challenging, yet rewarding layouts. At Rock Creek in Fairhope, you’ll be amazed at the incredible changes in elevation for this part of the state. But as challenging as the layout can be, this course treats the high handicapper with great respect.

For more information, call (334) 242-4169 or visit our website at www.GolfAlabama.org

44
The Lakewood Club at The Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa, an Autograph Collection Hotel, Point Clear Photo by Michael Clemmer

The other Earl Stone course is TimberCreek, located in Daphne, just off Interstate 10. This 27-hole layout offers wide, rolling fairways, carved from a dense forest of magnolias, pines and dogwoods.

Also on Mobile’s Eastern Shore, is the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa, an RTJ Golf Trail resort division property. It was named sixth on Southern Living’s list of “the South’s Best Resorts.” The resort offers the legendary Lakewood Golf Club to visitors to the Eastern Shore. The two courses at Lakewood, Azalea and Dogwood, meander around spring-fed lakes and are framed by stately magnolia, oaks and dogwoods which have been around for quite some time. Perhaps the signature hole at Lakewood is the 14th on the Azalea course, a par-five with a muchphotographed island green. Steeped in history and located on over 500 secluded acres along Mobile Bay, The Grand Hotel offers superb dining, plus many ways to be pampered. The resort

has upheld this grand tradition of Southern hospitality, charm and elegance since 1847 and it’s known as the “Grand Dame” of Southern resorts.

Coastal Alabama’s sister towns of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach continue to gain popularity with golfers. The area boasts 171 holes of golf within a 15 mile radius, all of which have re-opened after Hurricane Sally paid a visit last fall. Lodging options include beachfront condos and houses, on-site golf condos, as well as traditional hotels.

Located on an extraordinary piece of property directly along the Gulf of Mexico, Kiva Dunes is a masterpiece. This Jerry Pate design is arguably the Gulf Coast’s most spectacular layout. It’s the second best course in Alabama, according to GolfPass reviewers and it’s in Golf Digest’s, GOLF® Magazine’s and Golfweek’s top courses lists, as chosen by their professional raters. The layout boasts large, fast greens, huge bunkers are plentiful and the wind and blustery

45
Rock Creek Golf Club, Fairhope Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club, Gulf Shores

conditions that prevail along the Gulf of Mexico can make for a tough test. Kiva Dunes underwent a major renovation recently to improve the playability of the course for the average golfer, while retaining the challenges enjoyed by more experienced golfers. With 36 holes of Arnold Palmer signature golf, Craft Farms certainly shaped the golfing landscape in Gulf Shores. The first Palmer design in the area, Cotton Creek, offers a very

unique setting. Featuring gently rolling fairways and large undulating greens, it’s very playable from the forward tees and a true test from the tips. It plays over 7,000 yards from the back. The newer of the two Arnold Palmer designs in Gulf Shores is Cypress Bend at Craft Farms. The layout features sprawling bunkers, top-notch greens and year-round lush, green conditions.

Earl Stone’s unique design at Peninsula is a 27-hole masterpiece. This course offers generous, elevated Bermuda greens with very subtle undulations and some of the finest white-sand bunkers and waste areas. The splendid beauty weaves its way through and among stately live oaks, natural cypress vegetation and more than 30 sparkling lakes. It is arguably one of the best-conditioned courses in the Gulf Shores area with pristine and generous landing areas and

wonderfully maintained greens.

The historic Gulf Shores Golf Club is a local favorite, and arguably the coast’s best value. And just north of the beaches in Foley is Glenlakes Golf Club with an 18-hole, links-style course and a 9-hole resort-style layout. Both are highly regarded by golfers on the Golf Channel’s GolfPass site.

Come to Sweet Home Alabama to experience the world’s original golf trail, sample hilly and coastal designs by some of the game’s most creative designers, and you’ll be guaranteed to play some of the best golf in one of the friendliest places on earth.

OFF THE COURSE...

Don’t miss the USS Alabama Battleship and the Mardi Gras Museum in Mobile; deep sea fishing along the Gulf Coast; The Wharf entertainment complex in Orange Beach; Gulf Shores’ only brewery, Big Beach; and the new OWA theme park in Foley. Sample the food at Dauphin’s, on the 34th floor of the RSA Building overlooking Mobile Bay or the original Wintzell’s Oyster House in Mobile; do Sunday brunch at Marriott’s Grand Hotel in Point Clear; choose the fresh catch at waterfront spots like Cobalt or Voyagers at Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, or sample the offerings at the new Perch at Gulf State Park, the Original Oyster House or Lucy Buffett’s restaurant, Lulu’s in Gulf Shores.
