Named for Kentucky Governor Robert P. Letcher, this Eastern Kentucky county was formed in 1842 from parts of Perry and Harlan counties. In 1850, the population of Letcher County was 2,450. In 2019, the population had grown to 22,295.

Whitesburg Daugherty White

Once known as Summit City, Whitesburg is nestled along the North Fork of the Kentucky River. The county seat of Letcher, Whitesburg is named in honor of Daugherty White, a legislator from Clay County who lobbied for the establishment of Letcher County. It was founded in 1842 on 10 acres of land donated by Hiram Hogg, who is credited for building the first house in Whitesburg. Nathaniel Collins, the first Letcher County judge, is thought to have laid out the town and sold the first lots. Whitesburg was incorporated in 1876.

Main Street in the early 1900s.

Fleming _Neon

Located on Wrights Fork about eight miles northeast of Whitesburg, Fleming-Neon started out as two towns. Fleming was established in 1913 and Neon was incorporated in 1917. Named for George W. Fleming, the first president of Elkhorn Coal Company, Fleming was where the mine was located. Neon was the trading center for nearby coal towns. Neon, known in the early 1900s as Chip, is said to have gotten its name after a train conducter would holler for people climbing aboard the train to “knee on.” Fleming and Neon merged in 1977 during its municipal incorporation by the state assembly.

Italian Stonemasons Leave Mark on Whitesburg

Italians migrated to Whitesburg in the 1910s bringing with them their unique stonemasonry skills that hadn’t been seen in this area. Several buildings, retaining walls and bridges built by Italian stonemasons are still part of Whitesburg architecture today. The boot of Italy formed by pieces of stone in the 1930s remains visible on the outside wall of Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church. Also pictured below are The Methodist Church and a bridge in Upper Bottom.

Jenkins

Named for George C. Jenkins, a director of Consolidation Coal Company, Jenkins was once a model mining community. It was founded in 1911 on land purchased by Consolidation Coal Company. The land was part of 100,000 acres of land located in Floyd, Pike and Letcher counties previously owned by Northern Coal and Coke Company. Like most eastern Kentucky towns established in the early 1900s, Jenkins was built to house coal miners and coal company employees. The coal company even built hospitals and schools. A fifth of the 1,000 homes built had extra amenities — fireplaces, porches, pantries and electricity. To keep up wth the demand of building homes and businesses, nine sawmills and two brickyards were located in Jenkins. To transport building supplies, a temporary narrow-gauge railroad was built across Pine Mountain to Virginia. The town temporarily relied on a dynamo to generate electricty. Once buisnesses and land were for sale, the city’s government was established. Consolidated Coal Company supplied Jenkins with its own marshals to enforce the law. On January 9, 1912, Jenkins was incorporated as a sixth-class city. Consolidation Coal Company sold Jenkins to Bethlehem Steel in 1956. The mine closed in 1988.

Model Coal Town

Pictured above is the one-lane blue bridge entering into Blackey. C.B. Caudill Store owned by the late Joe and Gaynelle Begley was once a booming business in Blackey.

Blackey In 1908, Jim Brown established a post office on Elk Creek, naming it after his brother Joseph "Blackey" Brown. Pictured above is an old theater room at Calvary Campus. Stuart Robinson School is pictured below. The Lexington and Eastern Railroad laid railroad tracks through Blackey in November 1912 to access massive coal deposits. By the late 1920s, Blackey was a bustling, modern city. Stuart Robinson School, a Presbyterian settlement school, was erected in 1913 and was in operation until 1957. The property is now Calvary Campus Mission Retreat Center. Blackey Coal Company was established in 1917 constructing 30 houses and employing 80 miners. A flash flood devastated Blackey in May 1927. The North Fork of the Kentucky River rose 18 feet in an hour, killing 26 people in Letcher County. Two fires within that next year destroyed the business district. Blackey State Bank failed and the booming town ended with the Great Depression. In 2021, Blackey’s population is 150.

Coal Miner’s Daughter

Pictured to the left is the Indian Bottom Church, the first church established in Letcher Couty. Established in 1810, 20 Regular Baptists met at the home of Isaac Whitaker, near a bottom known as Indian Bottom because Native Americans had camped there and artifacts were found. This church building was built in 1902.

A scene of “Coal Miner’s Daughter” was filmed at the Doermann Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blackey. The 1980 movie portraying the life of country music singer Loretta Lynn starred Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones.

Bad Branch Falls

606-633-0362 State Nature Preserve KY-932, Eolia

This spectacular 60-foot waterfall located on Bad Branch State Nature Preserve is a must see. Taking you through an old timber hall road built in the 30’s or 40’s, the hike to Bad Branch Falls is a little over a mile (one way) and takes close to 2.5 hours at a leisurely pace. It is categorized as a moderate hike because it requires climbing over rocks and walking around small ledges. During the winter, ice along the trail can also make hiking somewhat dangerous.

High Rock Take a hike! Up for a challege? Hike the High Rock Loop Trail to the crest of Pine Mountain. This extremely strenuous 7.5-mile hike has several uphill elevation changes and is located nearly two miles north of Bad Branch Falls. Near the top of the trail, climb up steep areas with rock outcrop. High Rock’s steep ridge of sandstone gives all who pursue its beauty an unparalleled 180-degree view with the City of Whitesburg in the valley, the Cumberland Plateau on the horizon and Virginia’s coalfields beyond the tree line to the south. High Rock is the second highest point on the Highland section of the Pine Mountain Trail and is part of the Appalachian Mountains, which are the oldest mountains in the world. This trail joins in with the Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail, which will stretch over 110 miles when completed.

Interested in a guided hike? Call Letcher County Tourism at 606-634-1814 to schedule a hike.

In the 1970's, the drama based on John Fox Jr.'s book, "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come", was held in Letcher County until it lost its venue. After many years of missing this drama, the Cumberland Mountains Arts & Crafts Council decided to bring it back. The main character, Chad Buford, became John Fox's symbol for Appalachian courage during the cruelties of 19th Century poverty, the agonies of a divided Kentucky during the Civil War and the period when a ravaged South looked toward the West for a hope that would be bought at a terrible price. This famous novel has rarely been out of print for a century. The play by Appalachian playwright Fern Overbey Hilton is based on John Fox, Jr.'s book, "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come". The score of traditional music was written by Emily McCamy with percussion inventions by Gabe Anderson.
