SITE ANALYSIS Site Edge and Movement

Dominant human movement at 9am

Dominant human movement at 12:30pm

Dominant human movement at 5pm Pictures around site is taken and placed onto the edge of the site plan. Observations of existing human movement and main thoroughfares on the site are recorded at different times of the day. This is to incorporate existing features of the site into the future design.

SPATIAL COMPOSITION

Top view

Perspective view

Side views Using frame and grid technique, a model is built to explore the spatial composition through experimentation of repitition of members, transparency and form.

LANDFORMING

An exploration of landforming, with extrution and subtraction by using folding, peeling and sloping techniques. Screenboard is used and folded after scoring on one side.

ASSEMBLAGE

Side views

Bringing together two different forms, the spatial composition model and the landforming model, using smoothing technique to create a combined model.

SPATIO-TEMPORAL NARRATIVE

Koto in the forest, Lima in the mountains and Maldi by the sea Isolated and seperated Unique environments Each generating exclusive resources. Tradesmen from each environment meet for exchange In a forest opening Equidistant from each environment. It is here where multiple exchanges happen Multiple cultures coexist Despite differences between them. Underneath them A mystery lies It could mean change.

SUPERIMPOSITION COLLAGE

Site movement plan Spatiotemporal narrative collage

3 assemblage top view rotated and arranged

Superimposition collage

Plans from previous activities are overlayed to retrieve or inspire ideas for a design proposal to the site.

EXPERIENCE COLLAGE

Timber was the assigned material. In order to visuallise the experience of the initial design, the material, shadows and people are collaged digitally using Photoshop. This collage enables further design development.

FINAL PROJECT

Digital model perspective showing the general design.

Partial section 1:50 on A3 showing experience and program.

South Section 1:100 on A0 Incorporating site conditions, narrative, assemblage model, program and experience, design is further developed into the final design.

FINAL PROJECT

Sectional perspective showing experience and program that can be held at the bottom layer.

Plan 1:200 on A1

FINAL PROJECT

Model of design in relation to site.

1:200 Scale Model

FINAL PROJECT

White sticks represents humans at 1:200 scale, to give a sense of scale of the design.

DEVELOPMENT

After receiving feedback from final presentation, I tried to further develop the ideas for the design. The pillars for the bottom layer was too literal to represent the cyclic motion of waves. One feedback I received was that it would also be more interesting for the bottom layer to extend and spread beyond the rectangular base. My design is based on the idea of coexistence of three different environments. The feedback I received was that the idea was in fact translated into my design. The idea of cyclic, repeated and overwhelming, where one can be immersed and brought away from familiarity into other areas due to curiosity. Having dead ends creates movements where people go back where they came from. Walls sloping inwards creates an overwheming feel in addition to being fully underground. These dead end open spaces can be used for more private meetings. These spaces are connected in an open manner with the partially sunken lower ground open space, in terms of ease of access and visibility. The pillars at the side are at random arrangement and angles, representing the dynamic upper surface of the sea. Going down the more private spaces, the pillars at the side becomes more arranged and vertical, representing the calmer deep waters. The tall straight vertical pillars also gives more of a deep feel when in the space.

Development from superimposition collage to my final design. Ground Level

REFLECTION Through this project I have learnt the process of developing ideas for designing architecture. I have also learnt to see different things from a different perspective. Through this project I have also realised my weakness, which is having designs which are very much limited by the conventions and the buildability, hence designs are not interesting enough. I also tend to have a literal translation of form which I really need to work on escaping it. It is not easy but I would have to do my best in order to stand out from the crowd of future architects. Through this project I have also learnt to translate the idea of my precendents into architecture and to design something that makes user feel the same way instead of translating the visual form directly. I realised the importance of materials as it communicates more visually in terms of the experience in the design. It also defines the form of design, as different materials have different properties and limitations. I have learnt to work my way around these properties and limitations as a part of my design process. I have also learnt how to combine two different forms together using smoothing technique to create a new, more interesting form. I realised that combining two seperate forms together can create a new idea. Landform is more than just a flat land as it can be altered in a variety of manner to create more interesting surfaces. Collaging different images together was one of the interesting methods I found to gain ideas for designing. In future, I will try my best to apply what I have learnt in this semester in order to facilitate my work.
