Tenuta Berroni Custom Wall Fabric Collection
For last fall’s remaking of Beverly Hills’s Greystone Mansion as a decorator show house, the team at L’Esperance Design in West Hollywood, Calif., wanted to contribute something monumental. The firm’s design partners, Daelen Cory and Paul L’Esperance, had a trompe l’oeil effect in mind, but the project presented limitations. “We couldn’t paint or wallpaper [the walls],” says Cory, “so we had to find an alternate method to give them new life.” Thus, Cory and L’Esperance traveled to Piedmont, Italy, where they had high-resolution photographs taken inside the historic 18th-century Tenuta Berroni estate. The photos were later printed onto 58-by-300-inch pieces of fabric, to fill the Greystone entry’s 850 square feet of wall space. (The ceiling is the result of architectural projection mapping.) Since the Greystone event, L’Esperance has received commissions to use the technique along with other architectural motifs; prices start at about $300 a yard. “It’s a great way to change the entire feel of a room,” says Cory, “without committing to the permanence of intricate architectural moldings.”

The Tenuta Berroni Collection The Grand Entry This past November, L’Esperance Design participated in the remaking of Beverly Hills’s Greystone Mansion as a design show house. Wanting to create something monumental for such an historic and inspired setting, L’Esperance used forward thinking and innovative design practices to create a unique trompe l’oeil effect through digital textile printing. Unable to paint or wallpaper the walls, L’Esperance re-imagined classic design elements of Tenuta Berroni, a 1773 Italian Villa they visited for the project, and married it with innovative technology. What emerged were 58 x 300 inch pieces of fabric on which they printed the high-resolution photographs they took inside the Berroni estate. They re-imagined the classic design elements by custom designing and fitting them into the 25-foot walls of the Grand Entry. True variances in color, nuances in shading, and depth of shadow created the finished product that looks truly three-dimensional. The team used Architectural Projection Mapping to project 3D motion graphics onto the surface of the coffered ceiling integrating the actual ceiling of Tenuta Berroni and adding new life to the exisiting ceiling details that often go unseen. L’Esperance Design believes the technique they developed for this project makes it possible to give new life to an old medium. Without committing to the permanence of intricate architectural moldings and motifs, they have found a way to change the entire look and feel of a room, while still maintaining the spirit and character of old world grandeur.
