At a time where the language of conflict dominates the language of understanding and where hatred crawls in the absence of consolidation, the sound of music arises astoundingly over the gloomy skies of Jerusalem and it spreads its aroma and a miraculous sense in the tranquility over the ancient venue of the Tombs of the Kings. For over ten velvety nights, musicians from around the globe will fill the air with their music from Palestine, Basque, Catalonia, Galicia/ Spain, Georgia, France and Tunisia. In 2010, Yabous had intensified its activities and programmes in Jerusalem. We organized the Palestine Festival of Literature in cooperation with Engaged Events in Britain; we launched the album ‘A Time to Cry’ in cooperation with the Norwegian Kirkelig Kulturverksted; and we participated in several local and international conferences, festivals, and cultural events. Yabous had resumed the rehabilitation work of its cultural centre, to promote freedom, cultural pluralism and cultural coexistence. In this context we would like to express our deepest gratitude to organizations that supported Yabous cultural activities during 2010. A special thanks to Bayt Mal AlQuds Asharief Agency; Ford Foundation; the Representative Office of Norway to the Palestinian Authority and the Arab Fund for Social and Economical Development for supporting Yabous in this year in particular. We would also like to thank our permanent partners the Consulate General of France in Jerusalem for offering the Tombs of the Kings to host the Jerusalem Festival. Thanks to Yabous Productions board of trustees, staff and volunteers who offer their precious time and expertise in support of the festival. We thank you, our loyal audience, who has always been present in all of our activities, hoping that you will enjoy this festival, which will introduce you to different cultures and will make you discover the latest Palestinian artistic productions. May this year’s festival and every year that follows bring joy, hope and peace to Jerusalem. You are most welcome to the Jerusalem Festival. Rania Elias Yabous Productions Director

THE JERUSALEM FESTIVAL FIFTEEN YEARS OF VIBRANT MELODIES INTRODUCTION During the summer season in Jerusalem, we deserve to rejoice because our passion for life makes our lives worth living... For the past 15 years, in July, we marked the Jerusalem Festival; we harvested the roses of 15 years despite the thorns. We made the sounds of music, arts and culture loud and clear, in our attempts toto reduce the impact of our suffering. We rejoiced to promote our resistance and to defend life, which we greatly believe in.

This is not only the path to victory, but victory itself. This year we celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the Jerusalem Festival, A festival that attained remarkable achievements and reached levels of excellence. We aspire that the festival will remain the torch that illuminates Jerusalem; the beacon of enlightenment and pleasure; and the annual event for the gathering of the Palestinian audience. As Joseph Conrad’s words: “A glimpse of immeasurable strength and of immoderate wrath, the wrath that passes exhausted but never appeased”. In the midst of the difficult situation we are living in, and at a time where words and scenes change according to interests; and in the face of a stifling environment that suffocates the soul, people in the city of Jerusalem are trying to maintain a balance in their lives, to promote truth; reality; right to existence; respect to culture and arts; and sense of identity…..This is our goal at Yabous.

TOMBS OF THE KINGS Regarded as the most beautiful archeological site and impressive tombs in Jerusalem, the Tombs of the Kings reveal a rich history dating back to 45 AD. Helen, Queen of Mesopotamia, had traveled with her children to this region of the world and it was on this visit that she fell in love with the land. Helen had been searching for an appropriate site to bury her son, Isates, and other members of her dynasty. The site chosen for burial was to be located 500 metres north of the old city and it was there that the digging and preparations of the tombs began. Stone Tombs were carved into the rock and included a cave lavishly decorated with the facade of a palace. The tombs were closed by a rolling burial stone which is still intact today. Over the years that passed, the tombs served as a place used for ceremonies. The inside of the cave consisted of a main room leading onto adjacent side rooms. It was in the side rooms where dead bodies were laid to rest in niches. In the mid 19th century, the tombs were discovered by a Frenchman who began excavations on the site. They were eventually offered to the French government in 1886. As a result of the unique relationship between Yabous Productions and the Consulate General of France in Jerusalem, this site of magniďŹ cent charm, history and culture has been the venue for the Jerusalem Festival since 1995. The French Consulate has been busy working on a reconstruction project of the venue and is undertaking work to uncover previously hidden stones. In the coming years this will contribute to the creation of a museum, where artifacts from the magical history of the Tombs will be on display for all to see. This museum will contribute to the already striking atmosphere of the tombs, making it an extraordinary and exhilarating venue for the Jerusalem Festival in the future.

YABOUS CULTURAL CENTRE Given the importance of culture in a heated confrontation, we must join efforts and work collectively to build and further strengthen the Palestinian national culture in the heart of Jerusalem. This will be carried out through a series of projects that will leverage the pillars of deep rooted culture in Jerusalem. Due to the urgent need of the city of Jerusalem to activate cultural work and meet the multiple needs of its citizens, out of which the basic ones, have not been not met since 1967, it is crucial to expedite the completion of a distinct cultural project that contributes to provide some of the basic cultural needs of the citizens in Jerusalem in the context of the Palestinian cultural development, which is in turn a component of the national agenda and reform. This project has the potential to meet the cultural and artistic needs of the Palestinian people. It provides a social development dimension that consolidates the importance of investing in culture and arts; provides employment opportunities for different social segments; and creates a new, interactive and dynamic social reality. It produces different cultural innovations and social activities in an effort to provide a variety of programmes that have long been missing from the Palestinian society. The mission of the centre is to instill freedom of speech and encourage artistic creations, while promoting and advancing the cultural scene in Jerusalem and developing the artistic sense of the audience. The cultural centre includes a movie theatre, which will be used to screen Arabic and international film festivals and film screening targeting students and youth clubs. It will also include a multi-purpose hall that caters for musical and dance performances. Additionally, the centre will also have a hall for exhibitions, small performances and seminars. The centre will have a conference hall and a cafeteria, which can serve as a forum for the research community about art and culture. The centre includes a bookshop dedicated to the sales of books, magazines, publications and various Palestinian products. It also hosts a children’s centre that provides edutainment activities such as story-telling, puppet shows and day care services in support of parents attending cultural activities at the centre. Under the current circumstances, the establishment and sustainability of the centre’s work in Jerusalem, the pressure currently placed on the city and its residents, coupled with the obstacles they face, there is utmost importance to consolidate efforts to provide the necessary moral and financial support to enable the centre to succeed. Yabous Cultural Centre is proud to announce that it will start its activities in the beginning of 2011.

THE JERUSALEM FESTIVAL 2010 THEME REFLECTED BY PALESTINIAN TALENTS Yabous Productions launched a competition for designing the 2010 Jerusalem Festival poster, with the aim of giving young artists the opportunity to utilize their talents in promoting the vision of the Jerusalem Festival Out of 35 submissions from young people from Palestine, Egypt, Germany and Yarmouk Palestinian Refugee Camp in Syria, Nader Khoury, a creative designer won the competition. The decision was made by a jury composed of Sulieman Mansour, Taleb Dweik, Rawan Sharaf, Nazmi Ju’beh and Suhail Khoury. The jurist found that the aesthetic side of the design is relevant to the spirit of the festival. The 2010 poster competition follows the successful experience of 2009; wherea young Palestinian designer developed the design for last year’s festival. Yabous found this experience rewarding and wanted to create a space for young designers to contribute to what has become Jerusalem’s leading cultural activity. SHIBAT Palestine SHIBAT (’grey hair’ in Arabic) is a group of arts that grew older, but their souls remain the same. Despite their gray hair, they have a young spirit. Its members include Serop Ohanesian of ‘The Flint Stones’ band, which later became a rock band, known as ‘The Silver Stones’, whose members included Garo Demergian, Fredo Hazou, and Ibrahim Murad. Sheibat also includes Hani Murad from ‘The Hard Rock’ and Vreij Najjarian from ‘Manar’; Emile Ashrawi, from ‘Bara’em’ and Antranig Demergian. Despite the daily humiliation and oppression they face by the occupation, coupled with their old age, they are determined to play rock and roll music to spread the spirit of life and joy among people, which is one of the most basic human rights. They strongly believe that the spirit of Rock n Roll never dies. Their repertoire and performance enchants the new generation and takes the older generation on a delightful nostalgia trip. ERIK TRUFFAZ QUARTET & MOUNIR TROUDI France Eric Truffaz Quartet was found by the well known trumpeter Truffaz in 1996 and is composed of the pianist Patrick Muller, Bass player Marcello Giuliani and the percussionist Marc Erbetta. Truffaz was born in 1960 and was inspired by his saxophonist father who led a dance band. He took up the trumpet as a youngster and joined his father on the bandstand. As his technique grew, Truffaz linked up with other bands before being introduced to Miles Davis’ classic Kind of Blue album. This led him to study music at the Geneva Conservatoire in Switzerland where he learned to perform classical works by the likes of Mozart and Verdi. In 1990 he formed a jazz band called Orange and the following year won France’s prestigious jazz award, the “Prix Special”. Since the mid-‘90s, Truffaz has been a mover-and-shaker on the European creative improvisational scene. He signed with EMI France in 1996 and recorded three dynamic electro-acoustic recordings, Out of a Dream, The Dawn and Bending New Corners. He was introduced to North American audiences in 2000 with the CD “The Mask”, a compilation of his three EMI France albums that was followed by Revisité, a DJ-dance remix album of The Mask. The forward-sounding Mantis was released in 2002. For the second time Erik Truffaz Quartet will perform in the Jerusalem Festival 2010 accompanied by the Tunisian vocalist Mounir Troudi who is well-known for singing songs of major Sufi poets like the Hallaj. The concert is sponsored by the French Cultural Centre

SAMIH AL-QASIM - TO JERUSALEM WITH LOVE Palestine A Palestinian poet from the Western Galilee. He was born in Jordan in 1939 and returned with his family to their village of Al Rameh after the eruption of the Second World War. His creativity and poetry started at a young age. It was narrated that during their return, young Samih started to cry on the bus going back to Palestine. The other passengers were scared that his cries would direct enemy planes to bomb the bus and threatened to kill the toddler until his father drew out his gun to deter them. When this story was told to Samih Al-Qasim it left an impact and made him say to himself: “alright, they tried to silence me since my childhood. I will show them! I will say whatever I want whenever I want with the loudest voice and no one will silence me.” Years since that incident, Samih AlQasim’s voice is still loudly heard and all attempts to silence him whether through arrest, house arrest, military censorship have failed. He became one of the most famous Palestinian poets and a recipient of many international and Palestinian awards including the Spanish “Poetry Laurel” Award, two French awards and Najib Mahfouz Award, Alquds Award for Culture and Palestinian Poetry Award. Al Qasim worked as an editor and a literary editor in several Palestinian newspapers and magazines including Al-Ittihad and Al-Ghad. He also established Arabisque publications in Haifa with the writer Issam Khoury in 1973. He published more than 60 books in poetry, stories, theatre, essays and translations. His published works have been collected in seven volumes published in Beirut, Cairo and Jerusalem. Many of his poems were translated into English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Vietnamese, Czech, Greek, Persian, and Turkish. Samih Al Qasim participates in a night of love for Jerusalem with some poems from the Book of Jerusalem.
