The increasing desirability of calling New York home has caused a phenomenon that appears for the first time in decades: more people are moving to or staying in the city than leaving. The city’s renaissance since the 1990s has drawn thousands of new residents; today’s population of 8.5 million is the highest it has ever been and this number will continue to rise. However, the attractiveness of the city has led to a highly competitive housing market, with units fitting only for the uber-rich. At the same time, the available housing fails to offer a different atmosphere or “sense of place” that can lead to a different experience for its residents and differentiate the units in this increasingly saturated market. The Vertical Abyss project, redefines the concept of housing, as an asset that can give its residents a different effect-atmosphere.
