Cartographie du cerveau de l’artiste, de ses désirs, de ses influences, la carte blanche à un artiste est l’occasion d’aborder par un biais inédit les processus de création et de recoupements esthétiques. Après Ugo Rondinone en 2008 et Jeremy Deller en 2009, Adam McEwen (artiste britannique vivant à New York) conçoit un projet exceptionnel et fait dialoguer la sculpture médiévale et l’art conceptuel, un coffre-fort et une tentative de lévitation, des artistes oubliés et ceux bénéficiant déjà de la bénédiction de l’histoire. Face à cette histoire, justement : quelle position un artiste peut-il adopter aujourd’hui ? Tout a déjà été fait ? Tant mieux, on peut enfin commencer à travailler. FRESH HELL plonge dans l’histoire, proche ou lointaine, mais n’opère pas à coups de sonde verticale. L’exposition, qu’accompagne ce numéro de PALAIS /, brosse des mouvements latéraux et organiques, génère nombre de paradoxes et la fraîcheur qu’elle apporte est constamment balayée par le souffle des revenants.

By mapping the artist’s brain, desires, and influences, the carte blanche gives a fresh slant on the creative process and aesthetic correlations. In the wake of Ugo Rondinone in 2008 and Jeremy Deller in 2009, Adam McEwen (British artist living in New York) hatches an extraordinary scheme and creates a dialogue between medieval sculpture and conceptual art, vaults and attempts to levitate, forgotten artists and those already blessed by history. When faced with this history, what stance can an artist take today? Everything has been done already? Great, now we can finally get to work! FRESH HELL dives into history, recent or distant, but doesn’t bore through the strata. Instead, the exhibition, which is accompanied by this issue of the magazine PALAIS /, skims horizontally and in a nonlinear fashion, generating multiple paradoxes and stirring up a breath of fresh air that is constantly sucked away by ghostly shadows.
