was destroyed because of human greed, corruption, and inaction. One month ago, I spoke about the moral imperative of reversing climate change and environmental devastation, and I asked the members of our congregation to each make one big change this year for the sake of our children: go solar, switch to an electric car,

dramatically reduce water use, cut red meat consumption by twenty percent, or shift our investments from fossil fuels to renewables. I asked you to please tell me, by email or phone message, about the changes that you make. I challenged us as a congregation to see if we might achieve 100 new solar homes by next Rosh Hashanah.

Our traditional Leo Baeck Temple Chanukah dinner is not to be missed --- as we gather on the fourth night of Chanukah and light up the Temple with our holiday spirit. Cost for dinner: $20 for adults $15 per child - 12 and under.

If we can achieve 100 solar homes among us this year, it will be the equivalent of taking 2,400 cars off the road and saving 6,000 acres of trees.

from our president - randi levine fett Oh how I wish I had the answers… but at least I can offer a path Never accepting the status quo is central to our Jewish tradition. Israel, literally translates as, “wrestling with G-d,” and this wrestling is central to the Torah and Jewish tradition. We as a people are commanded to question and challenge concepts, ideas and the status quo. Our tradition teaches that questioning is important to understanding and action. The Talmud sometimes notes the opinion of a single sage. I translate this in modern day to “out of the box” thinking. It is hard to be the lone voice. Yet it is exactly this type of thinking that brings true paradigm shifts in technology, ideology, social change, and personal growth. Leo Baeck Temple is a strong community. I was overwhelmed with responses from our congregation about getting more involved. I see our ranks of “regular” participants in programs and volunteers swelling. This is one of the great gifts about membership in LBT, a way to feel part of something. Yet I know that each of us struggles. We struggle within ourselves to be our best self and we struggle with issues beyond ourselves such as social injustice and world peace. LBT is a community that is passionate about Israel, about peace and equally passionate about how to move peace forward. I use the word passion deliberately to reflect how strongly each of us holds to our ideals about Israel, its policies and the peace process. I also know that our community’s ideas about Israel and its policies are highly divergent. Our clergy are devoted to helping us understand Israel; From the Hartman series lectures about Israel, to the Rabbi’s book group discussion of Ari Shavit’s, My Promised Land to bringing trail blazers in the Israel peace effort to our community. I was moved by the grass roots group Polyphony; using music as a means to gain understanding among young Israeli Arabs and Israeli Jews in the Galilee through classical music. I am

inspired by Ali Abu Awad, a Palestinian living in Gaza who has spent time in Israeli prison yet is a pioneer for peace and has found friendship, hope and peace with an Orthodox Israeli rabbi living in a West Bank settlement. I would like to highlight some unique opportunities to connect the dots. The first is a Hartman Institute series of live lectures about Jewish Peoplehood. The second is an opportunity to become your best self through the ancient practice of Mussar with Alan Morinis, a modern Mussar teacher and practitioner. The Hartman series of lectures about Jewish Peoplehood starts November 2 and continues monthly through April. Join many of your fellow congregants in important, thoughtful, creative discussions about what it means to be a Jew. These lectures, held at different synagogues around Los Angeles, will explore our relationship with Israel, our neighbors, our obligations to other Jews and non-Jews, world opinion, what it means to be a Jew in the diaspora versus Israel, and other complex topics. Be sure to sign up in advance at: http://hartman.org.il/Programs_View.asp?Program_Id=109&Cat_Id= 288&Cat_Type=Programs

Mussar is an ancient Jewish practice of unlocking your soul by breaking through obstacles that prevent you from becoming your best self. Starting with a series of 5 Shabbats, the first of which is on November 14, get introduced to the concepts and begin to explore this ancient practice interpreted for the modern world. Then join us on our Community Retreat May 24-26 for a more intensive experience. Come with an open mind and begin your personal journey. There is much to wrestle with and much to be gained by “thinking out of the box.” May these opportunities lead us down a path that gets us closer to answers to life’s difficult questions.

community organizing where we’ve been and where we’re going Three years ago, we launched community organizing at Leo Baeck Temple. Members of our congregation listened to one another in more than 300 conversations about the issues that touch our lives and keep us up at night. Since then, LBT members have been busy working to create local jobs, build public transportation, connect people to health care, protect immigrants, and build affordable housing.

It’s time to ask:

• How are we doing? • What have we achieved? • What could be better? • How has our temple culture changed because of this work? • Have there been enough opportunities to get involved?

This winter, be part of the conversation about Leo Baeck Temple’s community organizing work – where we’ve been and where we’re going next. Look for announcements for a community-wide conversation about social justice and community connection at LBT.

lbt men - news LBT Men is in the process of planning some amazing events for the upcoming year. Watch for details in the coming weeks! Some of the great things we’ll be doing this year: • Poker Night • Bowling Night • Billiards Night • Happy Hour • & the Men’s Retreat These are great opportunities to foster a sense of brotherhood, camaraderie and community among LBT men. Don’t Miss Out!
