Totnes & Dartmouth

Totnes, a gem of a town next to the River Dart, devotes itself to arts, crafts, history and architecture. Packed full of history, a wonderfully quirky atmosphere, Totnes has lots to offer visitors taking a day trip from the English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay. Located on the River Dart, Totnes has a beautiful quay and there are regular ferry trips down the Dart to Dartmouth. Up in town, Fore Street is packed with great cafés and restaurants and all manner of new age shops reflecting Totnes’ slightly hippy vibe. You have to go a long way to find a town as pretty as Dartmouth. Overlooking one of the finest natural harbours in the UK, Dartmouth has a strong maritime heritage and is packed with narrow lanes, stairways and corridors, Medieval and Elizabethan streets. The town has fine restaurants, as well as arts, antiques and craft shops just about everywhere.

Exeter

Exeter is an ancient city on the River Exe. Dating back to the Roman era, the Exeter City Walls surround its centre and Gothic Exeter Cathedral. Exeter Castle, a Norman landmark, overlooks leafy Northernhay and Rougemont Gardens. To their west, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) displays fine art and costumes. The vaulted, medieval Underground Passages snake beneath the city making this a fascinating city to explore at any time of the year.

Teignmouth

Teignmouth, the quintessential Devon resort town, will lay claim to your affections the minute you arrive. Most of its history is wrapped up with its harbour, fishing, and clay from up the valley at Bovey Tracey. Since Georgian and Regency times Teignmouth has been attracting visitors to its wide beaches and amenable climate, and this has shaped the greater part of what Teignmouth is today.

Plymouth

Plymouth combines the vibrancy of a modern city with the heritage of an historic port. Start the day by visiting Plymouth Hoe - enjoy the best view in town from Smeaton’s Tower Lighthouse. In the Elizabethan Barbican are the Mayflower Steps, from where the Pilgrim Fathers famously set sail for America.
