Courses to Help You Find Work at Leicester College Leicester College’s City Skills Centre is based on Charles Street (near the junction with Horsefair Street), in the heart of Leicester city centre. The centre offers courses for unemployed learners, those needing help with English and maths and learners who have English as a second language, as well as professional management, computing and legal courses. The City Skills Centre is a new campus which has light and airy classrooms and a number of IT suites. Information, advice and guidance is on hand, and as with any Leicester College learner, you can use the services at our other campuses like the gym and access to our libraries. The City Skills Centre is easy to find and handy for shopping. It also has a cafÊ for snacks and hot and cold drinks.

Free English and maths courses for adults (19+) Functional Skills English and Maths Our functional skills English classes will help with your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Our functional skills maths classes will help you to develop your maths and problem-solving skills. There are many great reasons to improve your English and maths: to gain a qualification; to increase your confidence; to improve your job prospects; or to support your child’s learning. But whatever your reasons, Leicester College, has courses at all levels and we offer short as well as year-long courses. GCSE English Our one year GCSE English classes for adults start in September GCSE Maths Our one year GCSE maths classes for adults start in September. We also offer Functional Skills in English and maths. Functional Skills will help you with every aspect of learning, work and life. What’s more, employers are crying out for workers with sound Functional Skills - they are skills that are in demand.

Functional Skills also includes communication, team working, presentation and problem solving. These qualifications help make sense of daily life, from getting the best deal at the shops, to applying for a job or using a computer. The following levels are available: • Entry Level 1 = National Curriculum level 1 • Entry Level 2 = National Curriculum level 2 • Entry Level 3 = National Curriculum level 3 • Level 1 = National Curriculum levels 4 and 5 • Level 2 = National Curriculum levels 6 and 7 (equivalent to a good grade at GCSE).

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Leicester College provides free* English courses for speakers of other languages ESOL Classes These courses will help you learn English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Citizenship, employability and confidence building are also part of the course. ESOL Workshops These workshops will help you improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills with more focus given to the needs of individual learners. ESOL and Employability This course will enable you to develop your English language skills as well as your confidence in relation to work. There will also be help available for writing CVs, applying for jobs and attending interviews.

Learners can be asked to be referred by their Job Centre Plus Work Coach. For some of the courses, learners may need to be working at entry level 3 in English.
