On-going Ministerial Training and Support St Martins House 1st Incumbents

Lay Training Courses Journey in Faith (JiF)

Tues 9th Oct, Thurs 9th Jan, Tues 29th April & Thurs 10th July 9.30am – 1pm

The course is delivered to local groups in thirty sessions of two hours.

An invite in, opt out group that meets three times a year to support ministers in their first appointment.

Term 1 Exploring Faith Sessions include an opportunity to consider our own faith journeys and an introduction to Theological Reflection.

Term 2 God’s Call and Our Response Sessions include an introduction to the Old Testament Term 3 Development of the Church Sessions include an introduction to the New Testament and Church Doctrine – what we say we believe. Running through all 3 terms will be evenings entitled Ministry, Mission and Vocation when we will consider how we discern our gifts, hearing God’s call and making our response to God. Folders of study material will be provided. Written work (or equivalent) is not obligatory but there will be the option of completing one small project or essay each term. For those wanting to progress to further study we will ask for a least one essay in the course of the year. The total is £120 for the whole course which can be paid in three instalments of £40 at the start of each term. A course induction is being held on Saturday 28th September at St Martins House, Leicester and will then continue in local groups.

Reader’s Ongoing Training

This course is a 5 module course, delivered over a year, in a mixture of face to face groups, and through on-line learning. To undertake this course you should have completed ‘Journey in Faith’ or equivalent, or have a recommendation from a Ministry Officer / DDO. A level of computer literacy and internet access is required.

Existing readers are welcome to join the Reader Training Programme for specific study days drawn from the Old Testament, New Testament, Reflective Practice, Anglicanism, Gospel and Culture, Pastoral Theology, Worship and Liturgy and Systematic Theology. Funeral Training This course is required for Readers and pastoral assistants who would like to minister at funerals. The next course will take place in Spring 2014. This course is available to all readers and pastoral assistants who have served at least one full year of Reader Ministry. Facilitated by Judith Wells.

The course is delivered through blended learning, with each module comprising a face-face introduction session, followed up by a variety of web based activities, delivered through an on-line learning environment site, followed by a face-face final module session. The course includes opportunities to Increase: Skills in critical theological reflection. Dig deeper into both the Old Testament and New Testament. Understand the Psalms and the way Jesus is recorded as using them in worship and teaching. Together with opportunities to develop: Abilities to explain faith and belief in a community context. An increased understanding of vocation and call. The course begins in September, and the fee is £80 for the whole course. Group sessions will be held at St Martins House in the City Centre.
