Domestic Violence influences in the court System of Los Angeles California

Page 1

Domestic Violence is a pattern of coercive behavior in a marriage or any intimate relationship, when one partner tries to gain control over the other. It can include physical and sexual violence, emotional and verbal abuse, economic control, stalking, destruction of property, friend and family control, or intimidation. An individual does not necessarily need to be physically violent to be considered an abuser, but can be someone who is in complete control over finances, someone who purposely isolates the partner from friends and family, or someone who uses put downs and name calling for intimidation purposes. It can also describe a person who continuously shows up where the partner is, unannounced, to check that the partner is telling the truth, or reads all incoming email, phone calls and texts. This creates a scenario of a total lack of privacy. If you are involved in domestic violence in the los Angeles court system then you will be ordered to do some type of classes. Domestic Abuse causes more injuries to women in the U.S. than car accidents, muggings and rapes combined. One in every four women will experience domestic abuse in her lifetime. Women 20-24 years of age are the most likely to be abused. Approximately 1.4 Million women are physically assaulted by intimate partners each year.

Each and every day in America approximately 3 women are murdered by boyfriends or spouses. Studies have shown that more than 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence each and every year. Domestic Violence can happen to anyone regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or income. Research strongly shows that people who have annual incomes of less than $25,00 are three times higher the more likely to experience intimate partner abuse over those with over incomes greater than $50,000. People of lower incomes tend to report domestic violence, whereas people with higher incomes tend to keep the matter quiet by not reporting. Statistics have also shown that people living in the urban areas reported more domestic abuse than people living in Suburban areas. It was a surprise that it was found that African American women face more cases of domestic violence than white women, and that American Indian women are assaulted at a rate more than double that of women of other races. An accepted fact is that most cases of domestic violence, regardless of income are never reported! With over 10 million children exposed to parental abuse each year, the result can be alarming. There are risks for children who live with domestic violence in their homes.

There is a direct risk of them being directly abused, neglected and the constant exposure to witnessing these abuses. Children being brought up in this environment developed higher levels of anger, disobedience, aggressive behavior, depression, fear and anxiety. It is critically important that these children are protected from this behavior by either removal from the situation or by the abuser faithfully taking the DV classes to help them to change for the better. It is very important to note that these abusive behaviors are taught by watching their parents perform them in the home. A majority of my students have agreed that they had experienced domestic abuse as they were growing up and now have found themselves caught in this trap of Domestic Violence.
