WHAT HAS BEEN THE CATALYST FOR THE LOCAL CRAFT BREWING SCENE IN THE PAST COUPLE YEARS? The biggest growth factor regionally is that breweries are realizing that our region is still greatly undersupplied compared to the demand for local, craft beer. There will be at least three more breweries selling beer in the Pittsburgh area by the summer 2014 which is terrifically exciting. The market is ready for more. WHERE DO YOU SEE THE LOCAL CRAFT BEER SCENE IN THE FUTURE? We hope to see more collaboration within the brewing community. Larger breweries making boutique/experimental batches with smaller brewers. In turn, we’d hope to see larger brewers lending their systems to smaller operations to bolster their output. Per styles, we hope we see more Goses, Rauchbiers, and other underrepresented styles.

55 SQUARE CAFÉ

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE NEXT TREND IN BEER? Beer-spirit pairings. Aging beers in old spirit barrels is already big, but we think we’ll see more local partnerships within the local brewing and distilling community. WHAT CITIES DO YOU SEE AS MODELS FOR THE PGH BREWING SCENE? Pittsburgh is a great city. It’s a unique city. Our relatively low costs allow us to be more experimental with less risk. Let’s work with that to make an identity of our own rather than model after other cities. And then maybe we can show Chicago and Denver a thing or two.
