Year 3 Individual Major Building Project: 'Sheep in the City' This project envisages a different future for Cavendish Square, Central London. It emphasises a seamless integration between sustainability and architecture via an urban farm that creates a virtuous circular economy for foodstuffs. In emulation of a successful farm in a Parisian car park, it will grow mushrooms in the dark, endives in the semi-dark, and have sheep grazing in the square above. In this sense the scheme acts as a ‘digestive system’ for the local area with its high-density of top-end food retailers and restaurants. It becomes an essential component for the area in mitigating chronic daily food waste. Mushrooms also create mycelium which will be used as a low-cost temporary building material.

The architectural challenge of the project is in bringing natural light down into specific underground spaces, while leaving other spaces dark as needed.

Bio-Circular Economy Inside The New Cavendish Square A biological circular economy is formed when manure from sheep dissolves through the soil from the upper part of the building. It then gets transferred into B4 passively through the central spiral of the building for processing. Essentially upcycling natural organic waste into rich nutrients as soil for growing endives in B2 and mushroom in B3 as fresh edibles for the vegan restaurant located in B1. Processed soil will get redistributed from either the north or south part of the building through mechanical lifts.

Food wate generated from the vegan restaurant underground can also be redistributed through the slanted waste tunnel with sanitising equipment activating once food wastes gets into the system, creating a semienclosed biological system in the form of an architecture; any excess waste will then get transferred back into the ocean through the drainage system connected to the underground world.

The exhibition space is used to help people learn about sheep and their habitats, as well as how to live alongside animals in urban areas.

Sheep helps improve soil structure and fertility; it also reduces the growth of weeds without the use of chemicals. Through sheep’s manure, it provides rich nutrients to the grass and keep the soil healthy. It also helps increases biodiversity of the area thus provide essential habitats and miniature food cycle for insects such as bees.

This plan drawing reveals the many rings of ramps and ha-has that will separate the sheep grazing in the centre of the square from the busy urban life around.

The well-being of the nature above ground will be supported by series of machineries hidden underground with the purpose of upcycling natural’s waste.

“Spiral” Redistributes Organic Waste Passively In emphasizing the importance between the linkage of biodiversity and architecture as well as reminding people to treasure the natural environment; a viewing platform as a circular panoramic glass panels are installed on Level B2 to B3 for farmers and occupants to view the whole process of organic waste falling downwards passively by gravity while getting sanitised which, enhances the connection between people and food, farmers and soil.

Rings of ventilation fans are installed to keep away unpleasant smell emitted during the process of upcycling organic waste, left part of the tubes absorbs air into a air filtration system while right part of the ventilating tubes emits fresh filtered air back into the building.

In different ways, daylight is brought down into the basement restaurant, which has been designed to fit the existing circular car park layout.

Processed Soil can be redistributed through the north and south side of the building on mechanical lifts onto other levels of the building for farming purposes.

Organic waste through the central spiral will come down to this level where farmers would begin the process of upcycling the waste into nutrients for endives and mushroom’s soil enrichment.

Spiral connects and collects organic waste from 3 levels, Upper ground, B1 and B2, which is sheep park, vegan restaurant and indoor vertical farm respectively. Any excess waste will be directed to the ocean through the underground tubes.

This is where the biological cycle begins and ends. Sheep’s manure enters the building as nutrients for indoor farming purpose or excess processed soil in the building can be redistributed to the central plaza for soil enrichment.

Sheep’s manure as organic waste enters “spiral” through the slanted slabs under soil. Food waste generated in the vegan restaurant can enter the slanted waste tunnel and gets upcycled.

The indoor vertical farm will grow mushrooms in the dark, endives in the semi-dark, B2 and B3 respectively. Any rotten crops can also enters the recycle system in the building just like the vegan restaurant and sheep park.

CNC Wood Sculpture This CNC wood model symbolizes 4 main phases the wooden circulation in the middle of the building goes through, pixelated, in progress, detailed and finally, 3D mapped onto a concentric cylinder to be in the form of a building.

I intended the gesture of the architectural piece as a monastery that changes its appearance as time advances with the will of inhabitants crafting orthodox elements into each wooden blocks.

The Mapping Stage The wooden sculpture is 3d analysed based on the light and shadow it makes and then, they are 3D mapped onto a cylinder to form the shape of a building.

“Stepwell” Outdoor Preaching Space Church of St George Karytsi have strong will in developing a Monastery alongside of their current site that enhances the qualities of the local believers and monks with the following traits, self-actualization, importance of self-awareness and happiness in mind. The unique outdoor preaching space aims to provide such needed qualities in an architectural way; By “step welling” the central circulation of the building, it breeds a truly dynamic, welcoming and highly interactive space for the locals.

Everchanging With Monks and Inhabitants Crafting

Connection Between Interior and Exterior

The intent for the building gesture of the central circulation from the monastery started out as a pixelated three-dimensional replicate of a flat wooden artifact rolled inwards in the chapel of Church of St. George Karytsi in means of an inheritance.

As time moves on, the language that the “sculpture” convey changes dynamically as monks and inhabitants are free to craft into the wooden blocks from the central circulation space.

While you get to see the nitty-gritty details of each block to discover the personalities of the orthodox community around, a very different pictorial scene can be viewed when viewing from the zoomed-out perspective.

Initial Sketch At the start of the project, I drew different sketches of the view outside of where I inhabit, as a means of understanding it more, and by doing that, see what I can further develop from the essence of the sketches; Whether it is movements across the street or the contrasting streetscape

Movement Studies This study replicates the most used pathways of different kinds of people I observed like people heading to the office, Street Cleaner and Bicycle Riders, The visualness of it is chaotic and it affects my experiences as an inhabitant in the area

Year 3 Individual Initial Project: 'Experiencing Continuum' Located in Gresse Street, London, where I temporarily inhabits during the last year of my college study.

The project initiated from my curiosity to live in a new environment. Where I started off replicating the generalised flow of continuum from the dynamic streets of London through studying peoples movement and analysing lighting data of this particular street scene outside of where I live.

As such, reality through my observation and sketches - the three dimensional world, boils down into two essential forms, light and movements.

And by integrating both data in an architectural way. I hope to enhance the vibrance of the city through crafting a series of unique distorted spatial moments stitched as a pavilion by working with different layers of acrylics.

Light and Shadow From my sketches above, I realise how my brushstroke was really capturing the contrasting essence that the streetscape provides, thus that gave me the idea of extracting the light and shadow as data.

Mechanism of how light data are produced in the project I have token multiple pictures of the streetscape outside of where I inhabits and then averaged the numbers out. It is then processed in a mechanism where the brighter surfaces of the image are pulled out, while the darker surfaces are pushed in, this forms a highly contrasted and chaotic “fabric” (top drawing) out of the scene specifically and I have therefore reorganised it as stacking layers of contours (bottom left photograph).

Abstract To Actuality, Stacking After the making of the abstract model, I wanted to translate a similar stacking architectural language into the design of an actual pavilion for redistributing the general movement of Gresse Street in an organised fashion. The materiality of the pavilion - acrylic was chosen particularly in conveying a distorted yet dynamic spatial experience in Soho from an inhabitant’s perspective.

A Sensory Experience Through learning the tectonics from the - Swiss Sound Box, and iterating it through the integration of my light and movement studies at the start of the project, the objective of the project was not exactly the fulfilment of the functionality and practicality of why the pavilion was created, but from a philosophical standpoint; The feelings the building transmits through light, sound, smells and distorted spatial experience from an inhabitant perspective.

The Journey This page shows a collage drawing of nine different moments of the journey in continuum to walk from Stephen Street to Gresse Street (North to South) through the pavilion on the route shown above in the key plan.

The pavilion is permeable and can be accessed by every side, making every visitor has a different spatial experience in the changing atmosphere. This also enhances the dynamic traits of the Soho area through the highly reflective and distorted properties between the stacking of acrylic boards.

04 Year 2 Individual Initial Project: “Soho Square Exit” The project began with an interest in reshaping the underused underground spaces in Soho Square and adjacent streets.

Soho Square was built in the late 1670s as a 200-person air raid shelter which was built under the park during the Second World War. This project envisages a different future for Soho Square. It as a mixture of an underground exit as well as a post-war museum reduces the usual traffic of Tottenham Court Road station under Centre Point while retaining the rich post-war historic traits that Soho Square possesses.

The architectural challenge of the project is in bringing natural light down into specific underground spaces by triangulated architectural language, while leaving other exhibition spaces dark as needed.

Year 1 Installation Group Project: “Burn It All Down” The Installation group project was one of my main freshman year project which was as a literal parade in burning down hundreds of architectural models from previous year’s for celebrating the moving in of our faculty to the newly renovated historic site - 22 Gordon Street; And by transferring the ashes or remains of the old architectural models into the new building through artifacts we designed displayed on this page from a temporary location, glorifies the means of “passing the torch”.

The ritual was a relish to the eye and an enlightenment for me that architecture can transcend beyond a building as a system designed merely for utilizing land’s capacity in holding humans. Rather, it is showcasing this inextricably linked cycle between constructing and destructing through the integration between different scaled projects.

Throughout the projects, my role in the team was mainly in producing graphical renderings and diagrams as well as delivering In-house iterative renders, partial digital modelling of main tower, translation, animation and drafting competition booklet.

Along the way, my biggest takeaway from this experience was to learn what are the essential parts that makes up a super high rise tower like a core or refuge floors, as well as being part of the design team to see how everything is put together was something really helpful and unique to me.
