Howell endorses Thomas for delegate seat TRACY BELL » BY tbell@insidenova.com

Speaker of the House Bill Howell has endorsed Robert “Bob” Thomas for the seat Howell currently holds in the General Assembly. Thomas, a Republican, currently represents the George Washington District on the Stafford County Board of Supervisors, but is running for the 28th District House seat. Howell is set to retire. “I’ve had the privilege of knowing delegates from across Virginia, and I know Bob Thomas will be one of the best. Stafford County and Fredericksburg will be well served by Bob’s leadership, and I am pleased to endorse his candidacy,” said Howell in a released statement. Howell continued: “Bob served our country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is a successful small businessman and job creator. He serves on the Stafford Board of Supervisors and was Chairman in 2016. Bob is a dedicated husband and father of eight who understands the needs of Virginia families. Thomas said he was humbled and honored to receive the support of Bill Howell and his wife, Cessie Howell. “Their support is a tremendous boost to our campaign and I deeply appreciate their help,” he said. Thomas will go up against fellow Supervisor Paul Milde, R-Aquia, and former Supervisor Susan Stimpson in the June 13 primary, seeking the Republican nomination.

BOB THOMAS Democratic candidate Joshua Cole is also seeking Howell’s seat. Milde’s campaign opened its headquarters April 22 in the Claiborne Run shopping center at 1 Jadip Lane, Suite 107, in southern Stafford. Milde’s campaign raised more contributions than all of his competitors combined in the most recent campaign finance reports, according to a Milde campaign press release. The 28th House of Delegates District is comprised of portions of Stafford and Fredericksburg. Milde’s campaign reported that he “handily outpaced all his competitors” in fundraising for the first quarter of 2017. According to the report, Milde re-

PAUL MILDE ceived $37,200 in cash contributions for the period ending March 31, ending with $52,093 cash on hand. His two Republican competitors and Democrat opponent raised $15,181 combined, ending the period with a combined cash on hand balance of $25,516, the report said. “Virginia Democrats would like nothing more than to replace Speaker Howell with one of their own,” said Milde. “With Democrat candidates challenging Republican incumbents across Virginia, the Republican nominee in the 28th District must have a proven ability to raise the funds necessary to retain this seat for our party. Milde said he knows there’s a long way

SUSAN STIMPSON to go, but he is very encouraged by his campaign’s early success. Stimpson, who has been visiting constituents in local neighborhoods, said in a Facebook post: “I don't want to knock on your door to tell you about myself. I want to knock on your door to listen about the things YOU want to happen in Richmond. Career politicians like to talk, not listen. Me? I'm no career politician. I am with you and listening is the best first step to make sure I bring YOUR voice to Richmond.” The Republican trio will participate in a debate May 6 with moderators Tom Coen and David Kerr of Central Virginia Public Broadcasting. The debate will air May 6 at 8 p.m.
