Editorial for the Leeds Jewish Representative Council Yearbook Welcome to our Centenary Year Book and a huge thank you to all of our Advertisers and Patrons. 2016 began with a major sea-change when the LJRC became an organisation limited by guarantee. This provided us with the opportunity to review our aspirations for the community for the coming decades, providing a fantastic springboard for our incoming President. Laurence Saffer has spent the first year of his tenure embarking on a series of new ventures and ensuring that he is visible within the community. Our new website www.ljrc.org is now up and running and is continually being added to so please do take a look to find out about our new and ongoing projects. Here is a flavour of some of the activities we have been involved in this year: After the suspension of Bradford MP Naz Shah following anti-Semitic comments on social media, we organised an open meeting between her and the community where people could express their concerns and ask questions. We set up a one-to-one adult literacy programme called ‘How to Read’ and also, as representatives for the whole of our community, we set up the first Leeds Jewish LGBT group, soon to be followed by a partner, friends and family support and social group. The ‘Faith in the Future’ project we created saw sixth formers from Allerton High School give a presentation on faith to year 6 pupils at both Brodetsky and Wigton Moor Primary Schools and we hosted a fantastic evening meal as part of the World Curry Festival. We are represented on a multitude of interfaith groups, including the steering committee of the Leeds branch of Nisa-Nashim, a national Jewish-Muslim women’s organisation which has already held a number of successful events. This included a joint Mitzvah Day project which involved collecting essential items for female refugees. In November, Leeds was honoured by the presence of Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mervis for this year’s Shabbat UK. The whole programme of events was, for the first time, organised by a cross-communal team, co-ordinated by us and we also ran two hugely successful Challah Makes. In addition, we have co-ordinated a community resilience project with the JDC and lay leaders, as well as a shul vitality programme, in partnership with the JLC. As well as attending civic and shul remembrance and HMD events, we have also attended events and services at Bradford, Harrogate, York and all of the Leeds Shuls. As you can see, there are many reasons to feel optimistic but for many 2016 was a challenging year that created a feeling of unease. Brexit; the election of Donald Trump; the resurgence of the Alt-Right; the murder of Jo Cox MP; the ongoing horror of the Syrian conflict; North Korea; Putin; the death of so many beloved cultural figures – the list seemed endless. However, as always, we are defined not by the challenges we face but by the way in which we face them. We chose to remain open and engaged and refused to allow the values of others to supersede those that we hold dear. This is how we build the future we want, both for the Leeds Jewish community and for the wider community of which we are a part. Ann Dewar Programme Director and Editor

Brit Milah (Orthodox) The London Beth Din feels it incumbent to draw attention to the importance of engaging only qualified Mohelim to perform Brit Milah. It should be noted that all Mohelim including Doctors registered with the Initiation Society have received special instruction to carry out the ritual operation in accordance with Halachic requirements. No one, whether medically qualified or otherwise, is admitted to the Society’s roll of registered Mohelim unless qualified as regards religious fitness, knowledge of the Dinim and surgical competence. To avoid any doubt as to the Halachic validity of a circumcision, it is therefore advisable only to use the services of a registered Mohel. Contact: for Brit Milah (Orthodox) Please contact your Rabbi or Synagogue Office.

Brit Milah (Progressive) MB Locking Logistics Group Ltd www.em-b.co.uk 42-44 Burley Road | Leeds | LS3 1JX | T: 0113 245 9559 Leeds|Ashford|Birmingham|Liverpool|London|Manchester|ShefďŹ eld

Brit Milah is the procedure of performing circumcision as a religious procedure, with appropriate prayers. It can only be performed on Jewish boys. Circumcision is a surgical procedure that can be performed on any boy. For those parents affiliated to the progressive congregations, recognised Mohelim are registered with the Association of Reform and Liberal Mohelim (ARLM). All members of the ARLM are qualified doctors, able to do both Brit Milah and circumcision.

Guidance for the Bereaved When families were much larger and life expectation shorter than today, most people knew exactly what to do when a member of the family died. Nowadays, we encounter death much less often and as a result many are uncertain as to what they should do. The object of this brief guide is to indicate what you should – and perhaps more important – what you should not do. Most important, do not panic and do not telephone funeral directors, synagogue officers or the Registrar of Births & Deaths in the middle of the night. If you are in doubt, take advice along the following lines:

Normal circumstances If a death occurs during normal office hours: You should notify the office of the deceased's synagogue or the Chevra Kadisha tel: 0113 237 0159 immediately and they will be able to help and advise you. If you do not know of which synagogue (if any) the deceased was a member, contact the Secretary of your own synagogue or the Chevra Kadisha and ask advice. If a Jewish person dies in the Leeds area even if he or she is not a member of any synagogue, arrangements will be made for burial in a Jewish cemetery. A Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (Med. Cert.) not to be confused with a Death Certificate is required and this is normally obtained from a doctor who has been treating the deceased-either the G.P. or a hospital doctor. The Med. Cert has to be taken to the Office of the Registrar of Births & Deaths in the One Stop Centre, 2 Great George Street, Leeds, LS2 8BA (Tel: 0113 222 4408). You must telephone during office hours to make an appointment. The Registrar will issue a Green Disposal Form without which the Funeral Director cannot make preparation for the funeral. Please be aware that the death must be registered in the district where the deceased passes away. If any difficulties arise, seek the advice of the Chevra Kadisha. If death occurs outside normal office hours: Linda Schulman and Susan Cohen are the appointed on-call Deputy Registrars for the Leeds Jewish community. They are on duty from out Shabbat (Saturday night) until Sunday night and on all Bank Holidays. As soon as the family of the deceased are in possession of the Med. Cert. from the doctor attending they can come to Susan or Linda (depending on whose turn it is to be on duty) who can issue the Green Disposal Form which enables the removal and burial of the deceased.

Linda Schulman General Manager, Leeds Joint Chevra Kadisha Tel. 07590 876 416

Susan Cohen Tel. 0113 269 3815 Mobile. 07966 555517

Abnormal circumstances If death occurs in circumstances where a doctor is not permitted to issue a Med. Cert. or he is on holiday, or the deceased was on DoLs the death has to be reported by the doctor to the Coroner, and the Registrar cannot issue a Green Disposal Form. You should contact either the Funeral Director you are dealing with or the Chevra Kadisha. The Chevra Kadisha will deal with the Coroner’s office. Please do not contact the Coroner’s office yourself. The Coroner and his staff are aware of Jewish requirements and you can trust them to do all they reasonably can to expedite the release of the deceased. You would be wise not to make funeral arrangements until the Coroner has released the Deceased. If a Post Mortem is required please refer back to the Chevra Kadisha who will contact the Coroner to ask if a non-invasive Post Mortem can be carried out, a scan. This will be discussed with the family of the deceased and a consent form should be signed. Linda Schulman Administrator/Co-ordinator Leeds Joint Chevra Kadisha

HABONIM DROR

FEDERATION OF ZIONIST YOUTH Affiliated to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland The Federation of Zionist Youth (FZY) is the largest pluralist Zionist youth movement in the United Kingdom. FZY aims to create young leaders with a passion for Israel and their Jewish identity. Our ideology is shaped by Zionism and is expressed through FZY’s four aims: Tzedakah (acts of righteousness), Tarbut (Jewish, culture), Magen (defence of Jewish rights) and Aliyah Nimshechet (moving to Israel and living out our ideology). At FZY, we strive to challenge, stimulate, educate and excite British Jewish youth with imaginative peer-led activity. In Leeds, weekly meetings take place in the homes of community members (check the Jewish press for details). The Leeds Society is called ‘Ketura’, which is the name of the FZY/Young Judaea Kibbutz near Eilat in Israel. The society caters for 14-17 year olds and meets every Sunday evening with about 35-45 people per meeting. We can be found on Facebook by searching for “FZY Ketura” As well as weekly meetings, FZY also runs highly successful summer programmes, sending over 450 young people to Israel every year on our Israel Tour. Several teenagers from Leeds have been on FZY programmes – whether Ofek (end of year 9), Kesher (end of year 10) or our famous gap year programme – FZY Year Course. For more information, check us out at www.fzy.org.uk

Habonim Dror is a socialist-Zionist, culturally Jewish youth movement, that has activities on a regular basis to instill all the participants with a strong Jewish and Zionist identity. One of the main aims of Habonim Dror is for its members to go on after their time in the movement and make aliyah with the intention of helping to create an ideal Israeli society. All Habonim Dror events are centred around fundamental values of inclusivity, equality and social responsibility. We run activities for children aged nine upwards through weekly meetings, weekend, and residential summer and winter activities, including Israel tour for 16 year olds. In Leeds, our activities are run mainly from the Zone youth centre, often collaborating on special events. Post-Israel tour, all members have the opportunity to become leaders in the movement after partaking in an intensive leadership course, giving them the necessary and vital tools to help them pass on all they have learned and taken from the movement in order to give it back to the next generation.

THE JEWISH LADS & GIRLS BRIGADE For 120 years the JLGB has served our community with honour and is one of British Jewry's greatest unsung heroes. For generations, the JLGB has been inspiring and empowering Jewish young people to maximise their opportunities, to make good choices and to understand the importance of giving back to society. Today's JLGB is a modern, thriving, innovative and award winning organisation reaching out to over 4000 Jewish young people each year, offering them the opportunity to enrich their lives through a diverse range of positive experiences, exciting activities, leadership training and skills development programmes. We were delighted that Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, helped launch JLGB's youth volunteering initiative 'evolve', which creates a volunteering journey that embraces all Jewish young people throughout primary and secondary school and on to university. evolve will enable and equip all Jewish young people to fully engage in meaningful social action, enhance their employability and transferable skills to become active citizens in their community. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, or DofE, is the world's leading youth achievement award and the JLGB is immensely proud to say that since 1956, we have been the exclusive Jewish Licensed Organisation. The award gives young people between the ages of 14 and 25 the most incredible opportunity to take part in a wonderfully flexible and diverse range of exciting activities, ideas and challenges that leads to a nationally-recognised Award which is highly prized by colleges, universities and employers (and can prove to be a key differentiator for admissions departments). We can now offer the provision to all Jewish young people throughout the UK at not only all Jewish secondary schools but also, Open Groups, synagogues and youth and community groups. At the Leeds JLGB group, you can take part in a great range of activities, events and community projects in a safe and friendly atmosphere with people just like you! Whatever you're interested in doing and regardless of your level of ability, you will find a huge selection of exciting activities and opportunities. This will give you the chance to make friends that will last a lifetime, not just from Leeds or even the UK but from all around the world. For more information please contact the JLGB Northern Office on Tel: 0161 7678890 or Email: getinvolved@jlgb.org

JEWISH WOMEN’S AID Jewish Women’s Aid (JWA) is a unique charity for Jewish women and their children who have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse. One woman in four will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. It affects all women, regardless of age, education, class, lifestyle or religion; the Jewish community is no different from any other. That means that every year, thousands of Jewish women will face violence against themselves and their children from within their own home. And there is just one organisation in the UK dealing specifically with the needs of abused Jewish women. That organisation is Jewish Women’s Aid. Domestic violence can be physical, psychological, financial or emotional abuse from a partner, husband or former partner. Contact JWA's confidential telephone helpline 0808 801 0500 if you would like to join or volunteer, or to arrange for a JWA representative to talk to your group. www.jwa.org.uk

‘Our primary aim as a club is to have a great time socially, and this is achieved by an extremely diverse mix of people coming together to do what they love doing most.....playing Table Tennis!!! Whether a complete novice or an England ranked player, our club welcomes anyone, and if you have aspirations to improve your game, you can do this by either lots of practice at the various practice sessions we hold throughout the week, or through our organised coaching sessions which can teach you from the very basics to advanced level play. For kids The emphasis for all kids playing at our club is to enjoy this wonderful game. And at the same time we teach some great life skills too, like working as a team, good manners on and off the table, and how commitment to anything is more important than simply being talented.’ From our experience anyone can reach a very good standard of being able to play Table Tennis if they put the hours in....it really is as simple as that!’

WIZO’s ethos is underpinned by four key imperatives to nurture, to care, to educate and to empower. Through WIZO’s wide-ranging social welfare and educational initiatives Israel’s most vulnerable will become self-sufficient contributing citizens helping to build a stronger Israel for us all. WIZOUK supports 100 projects in Israel ranging from nurseries, schools, youth villages, vocational training programmes, women’s shelters for the victims of domestic violence to community centres. These projects typify the social welfare challenges that face Israeli society including integration of immigrant groups, empowerment programmes for vulnerable groups and Bar and Batmitzvah. WIZO in Leeds has full-time community fundraisers with the aim of building awareness of WIZO’s life-changing work. We are really keen for more volunteers to build fundraising groups in Leeds and the surrounding areas.
