Theinternationalteam,ledbytheUniversityof Cambridge,havepreviouslydemonstrated thatwovendisplayscanbemadeatlarge sizes,buttheseearlierexamplesweremade usingspecializedmanuallaboratory equipment.Othersmarttextilescanbe manufacturedinspecializedmicroelectronic fabricationfacilities,butthesearehighly expensiveandproducelargevolumesof waste.

However,theteamfoundthatflexibledisplays andsmartfabricscanbemademuchmore cheaply,andmoresustainably,byweaving electronic,optoelectronic,sensingandenergy fibercomponentsonthesameindustrial loomsusedtomakeconventionaltextiles. Theirresults,reportedinthejournalScience Advances,demonstratehowsmarttextiles couldbeanalternativetolargerelectronicsin

Despiterecentprogressinthedevelopmentof smarttextiles,theirfunctionality,dimensions andshapeshavebeenlimitedbycurrent manufacturingprocesses.

“Wecouldmakethesetextilesinspecialized microelectronicsfacilities,buttheserequire billionsofpoundsofinvestment,”saidDr SanghyoLeefromCambridge’sDepartment ofEngineering,thepaper’sfirstauthor.“In addition,manufacturingsmarttextilesinthis wayishighlylimited,sinceeverythinghasto bemadeonthesamerigidwafersusedto makeintegratedcircuits,sothemaximumsize wecangetisabout30centimetersin diameter.”

Lastyear,someofthesameresearchers showedthatifthefibersusedinsmarttextiles werecoatedwithmaterialsthatcanwithstand stretching,theycouldbecompatiblewith conventionalweavingprocesses.Usingthis technique,theyproduceda46-inchwoven demonstratordisplay.

Now,theresearchershaveshownthatsmart textilescanbemadeusingautomated processes,withnolimitsontheirsizeor shape.Multipletypesoffiberdevices, includingenergystoragedevices, light-emittingdiodes,andtransistorswere fabricated,encapsulated,andmixedwith conventionalfibers,eithersyntheticornatural, tobuildsmarttextilesbyautomatedweaving. Thefiberdeviceswereinterconnectedbyan automatedlaserweldingmethodwith electricallyconductiveadhesive.

Theprocesseswerealloptimizedtominimize damagetotheelectroniccomponents, which inturnmadethesmarttextilesdurableenough towithstandthestretchingofanindustrial weavingmachine.Theencapsulationmethod wasdevelopedtoconsiderthefunctionalityof thefiberdevices, andthemechanicalforce andthermalenergywereinvestigated systematicallytoachieveautomatedweaving andlaser-basedinterconnection,respectively.

LightingControlSystemsfor Agriculture

LEDlightingisgainingpopularityinthe fieldofagriculture,especiallyinanimal husbandry,greenhouses,andindoor farming,whereitprovidesseveralbenefitsovertraditionallightingmethods suchasbeingmaintenance-freeand havingahigherenergyefficiency— LEDsconvertmorethan80%ofthe electricitytheyconsumeintolight andconsume60%lessenergyforthe samelightingintensity.However,the biggestadvantageisspectrumcontrol: differentcropsandanimalsrequiredifferentwavelengthsoflightforoptimal growth,yield,andwell-being,andLED lightingcanprovidetheexactspectrumneededwiththeaddedbenefit thatthisspectrumcanbeoptimizedin real-time.Thisabilitytofine-tunethe colortemperaturemakesLEDlighting acost-effectivesolution,eventhough itsinitialcostmaybehigherthanthat oftraditionallightingmethods.

TheImportanceofLED LightinginAnimal Husbandry

LEDlightingisusedinanimalhusbandry toimproveanimalwelfare,growth,and productivity.Properandadequatelightingiscrucialforanimalwell-beingand growth,andLEDlightingcanprovidethe exactspectrumoflightneededfordifferent stagesofanimaldevelopment.

Forexample,inpoultryfarming,UVand visiblelightLEDlightingisusedtoregulate thecircadianrhythmofchickens.Theright amountandspectrumoflightpromotes increasedeggproduction,reducesstress, andimprovestheoverallwelfareofthe birds.Asbirdshaveadifferentvisualresponsethanhumans(tetrachromaticrather thantrichromaticreceptorsintheretina), theycanperceiveultravioletlightthatwe cannotsee.Theyusethisabilitytoidentify eachothertoestablishtheirpeckingorder, andhensutilizeittoassessthehealthiness oftheirbrood(healthierchickshavedenser feathersthatreflectUVlightmorestrongly, soamotherhencanquicklyidentifyweak fromstrongchicks).InlowUVlightconditions,poultrycannotusethisextrasense andsobecomeuncomfortableandeven aggressive.Ideally,theilluminationlevel shouldbe 30–50 luxover80%ofthespace (poultryalsohaveawiderfieldofvision (300°)thanhumans(180°),andtherefore thewholespaceneedstobewell-litwith nodarkorshadedareasthatcouldbeperceivedasbeingathreattothebirds).

Indairyfarming,LEDlightingcanbeused toincreasemilkproduction.Dairycows requireaspecificamountoflightperday foroptimalmilkproduction(typically 150 lux for16hoursperday),andLEDlightingcan providetheexactspectrumandintensity needed.Testsshowthata5–16%increase inmilkyieldcanbeachievedwhenthe lightingisoptimalcomparedtotoodark

orshortlightingtimes.Likepoultry,cows haveaverywidefieldofvisionandbecomeunsettledbydarkorshadedareas. Thusbroad,evenilluminationisrequired. Itisalsoimportanttohaveaperiodoflow lighting(<50 lux)toallowthecowstorest properly.Ascattlecannotseeredlight, LEDlightingcanalsobeswitchedtothe redspectrumduringthistimetoallowfarm workerstocheckonthecowswithout wakingthem(Figure 1, Figure 2).

TheBenefitsofLEDLighting inHorticulture

Aspreviouslymentioned,LEDlighting offersprecisespectrumcontrol,which meansthatthelightcanbetailoredtothe specificneedsofplants;theclassicgrow lampsradiatemorestronglyinthecolors,magentaandblue.However,different wavelengthsoflightarerequiredfordifferentstagesofplantgrowth,andLED lightingcanprovidetheoptimalspectrum foreachstage.Anotheradvantageisthat itproduceslessheatandinfraredradiationthantraditionallightingmethods,thus reducingtheriskofheatstressonplants underhighilluminationlevels.Thisisespeciallyimportantinindoorfarmingand greenhousecultivation,wheretemperature controliscritical.

Indoorfarminginvolvesgrowingcropsin anindoorenvironmentusingpurelyartificiallightingthatallowsforyear-round cropproduction.Verticalfarminginvolves growingcropsinstackedlayers,making

itaspace-efficientoptionforurbanareas. LEDlightingprovidesthenecessarylight forplantgrowthineachlayer,reducing energyconsumptionandheatoutput.In hydroponicfarming,plantsaregrownin anutrient-richwatersolutionwithoutsoil, andLEDlightingcanoffertherightspectrumoflightforphotosynthesis,allowing plantstogrowfasterandproducehigher yields;itcanalsobecustomizedtomatch thespecificlightrequirementsofdifferentplantspecies.Avariationonsoil-less horticultureisaeroponicfarming,where plantsaregrowninanairormistenvironment,andaquaponicfarming,whereplants aregrowninawater-basedenvironment withfish.Again,LEDlightingisusedto providethenecessaryspectrumoflight foroptimumplantgrowthandtosupport thegrowthofaquaticorganisms.Indoor farmingisbecomingincreasinglypopular, especiallyinurbanareaswherespaceis limited.Here,LEDlightingplaysacritical role,asitprovidesthenecessarylightfor plantgrowthwhilereducingenergyconsumptionandheatoutput.

Onalargerscale,LEDlightingisusedin greenhousecultivationtoprovidethenecessarylightforplantgrowth,regardlessof weatherconditions.Artificiallightingisalso usedtoextendthegrowingseason,which meansthatcropscanbegrownoutsideof theirnormalgrowingseason.
