The Old Bell was always packed with people, with many tables seating large groups. This was a place where we were often asked to take large group portraits, although this was not an ideal shot for us. A Polaroid camera worked much better for close-ups of one or two people. The trick was to get the group to pose as tightly as possible so that the auto-focus worked for the entire group. It was helpful that there were two of us, so one could arrange the people to make sure every face was visible.

The Old Bell was altijd barstensvol, met een hoop tafels voor grotere groepen. We werden hier vaak gevraagd om groepsportretten te maken, al was dat niet ons ideale soort foto. Een Polaroidcamera werkt het best voor closeups van een of twee mensen. De truc was om de mensen zo dicht op elkaar te laten staan dat de autofocus voor de hele groep werkte. Het was handig dat we met z’n tweeën waren, zodat een van ons de mensen zo kon schikken dat ieders gezicht zichtbaar was.

We got to keep one great shot of a drunken group of men holding up their beers for a toast. It’s the perfect moment, a split second that is frozen and dynamic at the same time. Soon afterwards, the drunkenness degenerated into pure chaos.

We konden een fantastische foto houden van een groep dronken mannen die hun bier heffen om te proosten. Het is het perfecte moment, een fractie van een seconde die bevroren maar tegelijk dynamisch is. Meteen daarna zorgde hun kennelijke staat voor totale chaos.

I vividly remember this photo of Herman and the trans Stien because a videographer was filming us while the photo was being taken. The video includes the music “Why Can’t We Live Together” playing in the background. For its regulars, Bar Festival was a refuge, and that Timmy Thomas song was a particular favorite.

Deze foto van Herman en de trans Stien herinner ik me nog goed, omdat de videocameraman ons filmde toen we de foto maakten. Op de video hoor je het nummer ‘Why Can’t We Live Together’ van Timmy Thomas op de achtergrond. Voor vaste klanten was Bar Festival een soort toevluchtsoord; dit liedje was er favoriet.
