PROFESSIONAL WORK WASHINGTON, DC FALL 2018 - SPRING 2021 (COMPLETION - FEBRUARY 2023) FIRM: R2L-ARCHITECTS TEAM MEMBERS: -JILL WAHL -NICK ANDERSON -NOLAN BRENNAN -THOMAS MASINO -SACHA ROSEN ILLUME IS A MULTI-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL APARTMENT COMPLEX BOASTING TWO 13-FLOOR TOWERS (LEED GOLD) WITH AN AC HOTEL (LEED CERTIFIED) SHARING THE SITE ATOP 2 LEVELS OF BELOW-GRADE PARKING. EACH BUILDING IS CONNECTED VIA ABOVE GROUND BRIDGES TO CREATE AN ABOVE GROUND SENSE OF URBANITY. THE SITE IS LOCATED ALONG TWO MAJOR HIGHWAYS IN NAVY YARD WITH STUNNING VIEWS OF THE CAPITOL. THE PROGRAM CONSISTS OF APARTMENTS, ASSOCIATED AMENITY SPACES, A HOTEL, A RESTAURANT, AND 2 LEVELS OF OFFICE SPACE. THE MASSING OF THESE BUILDINGS WAS HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY BELOW GRADE UTILITY AND SEWER SYSTEMS THAT COULD NOT BE BUILT OVER AS WELL AS HIGHWAY EASEMENTS AND THE NECESSITY OF CREATING STREETS INTO THE SITE. THESE NEW STREETS ARE EXTENSIONS OF EXISTING STREETS TO FURTHER CONNECT THE SITE TO THE OVERALL URBAN LANDSCAPE OF NAVY YARD. IN ADDITION TO THE SCHEMATIC, DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION WORK I PROVIDED FOR THIS PROJECT, MY MAIN TASK WAS TO DEVELOP THE FACADE INCLUDING BALCONIES. THE CONCEPT FOR THE METAL PANELS WAS TO EXPLORE THE NATURAL DETERIORATION OF COPPER, FROM THE DARK BLUE PATINA TO THE FRESH BRIGHT COPPER. THE SIZING AND TEXTURES OF THE PANELS HELP CREATE DEPTH THAT MIMICS NATURAL METAL OXIDATION AND DEGREDATION.

BUILDING 1 134,600 SQFT

THE SITE WAS ONCE OWNED BY CSX, THE LEADING SUPPLIER OF RAIL-BASED FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION, AND IS WHERE THE INSPIRATION FOR THE FACADE STARTED. THE DESIGN ATTEMPTS TO PORTRAY THE PROGRESSION OF A ONCE INDUSTRIAL SITE INTO A NEW MODERN SOCIETY TO REFLECT THE IMPERMANENCE OF MATERIALS. SITE PLAN

PROSPECT GARDENS INTEGRATED DESIGN STUDIO SITE: NEW ORLEANS, LA STUDIO : SPRING 2021 PROFESSORS : IRENE KEIL

THIS INTEGRATED DESIGN STUDIO WAS TASKED TO DESIGN A MIXED USE OFFICE SPACE WHICH INCLUDED A COMMUNITY ROOM, CAFE, EVENT SPACE AND GALLERY. THE FOCUS OF THIS STUDIO WAS TO INTERGRATE DESIGN TECHNOLOGIES AND SYSTEMS SUCH AS MECHANICAL/ PLUMBING AND STRUCTURAL WHILE MEETING SITE SPECIFIC BUILDING CODES AND LIFE SAFETY AND EGRESS REQUIREMENTS. I EXPANDED UPON THESE TASKS TO CREATE A BUILDING INSPIRED BY BIOPHILIA, ONE IN WHICH NATURE WAS THOUGHTFULLY INTRODUCED INTO THE MIXED USE ENVIORNMENT TO ADHERE TO THE FOUR PATTERNS OF BIOPHILIC DESIGN. REFUGE, A PROTECTIVE ENVIRONMENT TO SUPPORT RESTORATION; PROSPECT, AN EXPANSIVE LANDSCAPE FOR CONTEMPLATION; VISUAL CONNECTION WITH NATURE, A VIEW OF NATURAL ELEMENTS; CONNECTION WITH NATURE, AWARENESS OF NATURAL PROCESSES AND TEMPORAL CHANGES I CREATED NUMEROUS SPACES THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING FOR ONE TO FEEL IMMERSED IN NATURE, THUS BENEFITING OVERALL MOOD, PRODUCTIVITY AND WELL-BEING. FROM OUTDOOR TERRACES WITH PLANTERS, TO EXTERIOR GARDEN BRIDGES, TO A ROOFTOP URBAN FARM, THE DESIGN HELD BIOPHILIA AT ITS CORE.

NEW ORLEANS, LA STUDIO : JANUARY 2022 - COMPLETION (MAY 2022) PROFESSORS : BYRON MOUTON AND SARAH ALLEN HARPER THIS STUDIO WAS THE BUILD PORTION OF A DESIGN/BUILD STUDIO TASKED WITH CONSTRUCTING A TWO BEDROOM ADA ACCESSIBLE AFFORDABLE DWELLING ON AN EMPTY LOT. UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE PROFESSORS A TEAM OF 12 STUDENTS COMPLETED GROUND UP CONSTRUCTION IN A FIVE MONTH PERIOD. THE TEAM PREPARED TRENCHES AND POURED CONCRETE FOUNDATIONS; ASSEMBLED WOOD FRAMING SYSTEMS; INSTALLED WATERPROOFING SYSTEMS AND EXTERIOR CLADDING; MANUFACTURED CUSTOM MILLWORK AND TESTED PROTOTYPES; INSTALLED WINDOWS, DOORS, FLOORS, CABINETRY AND CUSTOM MILLWORK, AND EXECUTED LANDSCAPE DESIGNS INVOLVING GRADING, INSTALLING PAVERS, GRAVEL, SOD AND PLANTER BEDS. THE TEAM ALSO WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE CLIENT (THE BETHLEHEM LUTHERAN CHURCH) REGARDING MATERIAL CHOICES AND COLORS. THE TEAM ALSO COLLABORATED WITH MECHANICAL, PLUMBING, ELECTRICAL, ROOFING AND DRYWALL CONSULTANTS DURING THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS. THIS HANDS-ON CONSTRUCTION PROCESS ALLOWED THE TEAM TO FULLY UNDERSTAND HOW ARCHITECTURE TRANSLATES FROM PAPER/DIGITAL TO THE REAL WORLD.

THE ALBERT AND TINA SMALL CENTER SITE: LOWER ALGIERS, NEW ORLEANS, LA STUDIO : AUGUST 2021 - COMPLETION (JANUARY 2022) PROFESSORS : EMILIE TAYLOR WELTY AND JOSE COTTO

BIOSWALE

THIS DESIGN/BUILD STUDIO CONSISTING OF UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS WAS TASKED TO DESIGN AND FABRICATE AN OUTDOOR TEACHING SPACE AND FUTURE KITCHEN. THE LARGE PAVILION ADDRESSES EXISTING WATER MANAGEMENT ISSUES AND PROVIDES A SPACE FOR EXPANDED PROGRAMMING ON THE EDUCATIONAL FARM. THE SMALL CENTER TEAM WORKED VERY CLOSELY WITH THE CLIENT TO DETERMINE THEIR SPECIFIC NEEDS AND DESIRES FOR EXPANDING THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM. THE BUILT CLASSROOM SPACE IS A RAISED CONCRETE SLAB WITH INTEGRATED DRAINAGE THAT ANCHORS A LARGE STEEL AND WOODEN ROOF STRUCTURE. THE ROOF PROVIDED A LARGE SHADED AREA FRO CLASSES AND DIRECTS WATER TO A CISTERN AND A BIOSWALE TO ALLEVIATE THE LOCALIZED FLOODING. THE STRUCTURE INCLUDES WASH STATIONS FOR THE FARM’S PRODUCE AND LARGE COUNTERS FOR TEACHING CANNING AND COOKING CLASSES. THE SPACE IS BRACKETED BY A STORAGE AREA FOR KITCHEN EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES AND AN EDUCATIONAL WALL WITH FIXED SIGNAGE AND A CHALKBOARD FOR CLASS ACTIVITIES.

OFF THE GRID/IN THE CITY NORFOLK ISLE: A RESILIENT BOUNDARY SITE: NORFOLK, VA STUDIO : FALL 2015 PROFESSOR : PHOEBE CRISMAN

THIS STUDIO TASK WAS TO DESIGN A SELF-SUFFICIENT ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER, A SERIES OF OUTDOOR SPACES AND A LIVING SHORELINE THAT DEMONSTRATE RESILIENT URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL STRATEGIES.

UNDULATING STEEL ROOF

THIS DESIGN CHALLENGE INTRODUCED ME TO RESILIENT ARCHITECTURE AND ITS ABILITY TO HEAL AN ENVIRONMENT BY BECOMING A CRUCIAL PART OF THE ECOSYSTEM. I DESIGNED A SELF-SUSTAINING EDUCATION CENTER SUPPORTED BY PIERS IN A HARBOR PERCHED ALONG A REHABILITATED WETLAND WHERE THE COMMUNITY COULD LEARN ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE IN AN INTERACTIVE YET EDUCATIONAL WAY.

THE DESIGN FULLY EMBODIES THE IDEA OF A RESILIENT BOUNDARY BY EXISTING WITHIN THE THRESHOLD OF THE SHORELINE AND THE HARBOR. THE CENTER HOUSES MULTIPLE CLASSROOMS AND EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS AS WELL AS RAINWATER COLLECTION TANKS THROUGHOUT.

BY FULLY INTERGRATING WITH THE HARBOR, THE CENTER IS DESIGNED TO ALLOW THE LEARNING BARGE, THE WORLD’S FIRST FLOATING WETLAND CLASSROOM, TO DOCK FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME AS AN ADDITION TO THE CLASSROOMS AND WORKSHOPS PROVIDED.

RESEARCH THESIS OSCILLATING GROUND SITE: VERO BEACH, FL STUDIO : SPRING 2016 PROFESSOR : W.G. CLARK

IMAGINE YOUR FAVORITE COASTAL CITY, ITS GORGEOUS COASTLINE, BEAUTIFUL WHITE SAND, PURELY TRANQUIL. NOW IMAGINE THAT SAME CITY IN 2100 COMPLETELY SUBMERGED BELOW THE OCEAN; THE NEW ATLANTIS, A LOST CITY. WORST CASE SCENARIO SEA LEVEL RISE FOR THE YEAR 2100 IS PREDICTED AT 6.6 FT. OUR COASTLINES AND BEAUTIFUL BEACHES WILL BE COMPLETELY OBLITERATED, SO HOW CAN WE MAINTAIN LIVING IN THESE COASTAL CITIES? THE ANSWER IS TO ADAPT AND THIS PROJECT IS THE ANSWER. INSPIRED BY A HOUSEBOAT, THIS DESIGN TAKES IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND BECOMES A SAFE HAVEN COMMUNITY THRIVING ATOP THE OCEAN’S FLUCTUATING SEA LEVEL. DESIGNED WITH A CONCRETE PONTOON LANDSCAPE, WINDMILLS, AND RAINWATER COLLECTION TANKS, THIS SELF-SUFFICIENT ISLAND EMBRACES THE OCEAN.

GRAPHIC NOVEL SANCTUARIES: THE CITY OF SMOG SITE: MINERAL CITY, VA STUDIO : FALL 2014 PROFESSOR : SETH MCDOWELL

THIS STUDIO REVOLVED AROUND CREATING A MANIFESTO OF UNFINDABLE ARCHITECTURE, DEFINED AS THE EXCEPTION OR SPECIAL OCCURENCE; IT IS PROBABLY DISFUNCTIONAL AND PROBABLY IMPOSSIBLE. BASED ON THE STUDY OF “PATAPHYSICS”, THE SCIENCE OF IMAGINARY SOLUTIONS AND THE LAWS GOVERNING EXCEPTIONS, I DESIGNED A SOLUTION FOR A DYSTOPIAN FUTURE PLAGUED BY POLLUTION FOR A “LOST TOWN” OF VIRGINIA. THIS NOVEL TELLS THE TALE OF A CITY THAT FALLS PREY TO COMMODITY FETISHISM WHICH LEADS TO EXTREME POLLUTION. THE ONLY WAY TO SURVIVE IS TO FLEA THE GROUND PLANE AND LIVE ABOVE THE CITY. STRUCTURES KNOW AS “SANCTUARIES”, CREATED THROUGH A PROCESS OF SYTHESIZING POLLUTED AIR PARTICLES INTO CLEAN, LIVEABLE ENVIRONMENTS ABOVE GROUND BEGIN TO EMERGE, BUT THE MORE POLLUTED THE AIR, THE MORE SANCTUARIES. A SOCIETY THAT DOES NOT LEARN FROM ITS MISTAKES IS GUARANTEED TO REPEAT THEM. SYZYGY = THE PROCESS OF CREATING FORMS PRODUCED WHEN OPPOSING MATERIALS REACT WITH ONE ANOTHER. THROUGH THE COMBINATION OF HOT WAX, ICE, AND PLASTIC PELLETS, THESE COLORFUL STRUCTURES WERE FORMED AND EMERGED AS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE GRAPHIC NOVEL.
