First Allwein Scholars Selected Through the generosity of one of LVC’s highly successful graduates, the College can now more fully compete for the best-of-the-best among high school graduates. With funds donated through an estate gift from Dr. John “Jack” Bowman Allwein ’56—the largest such gift in the College’s history— President Thayne established the John Bowman Allwein Scholars Program, the College’s most prestigious honor for incoming freshmen. The inaugural group of Allwein Scholars were welcomed to campus this fall. Chosen for their extraordinary accomplishments and exceptional promise in academics, leadership, or music, Allwein Scholars receive a full-

tuition scholarship; an annual stipend of $2,500 for research, travel, or study expenses; and a designated faculty mentor who serves as their primary faculty advisor. Dr. Jeff Robbins, chair of religion and philosophy, professor of religion, and director of American studies, is the inaugural Allwein faculty mentor. The historic first class of Allwein Scholars includes Nate Gibbons (Frederick, Md., physics), Shaquel Marshall (Baltimore, Md., 3+2 Engineering Program), Ciara Marshall (Rising Sun, Md., biochemistry & molecular biology), Andrew Martz (Duncannon, music recording technology, physics minor), and Andrew Meglathery (Robesonia, actuarial science).
Two new programs in the Dominican Republic were added as full-semester study-abroad options for LVC students. Students can study in Santo Domingo, the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, or choose an academic or service-learning track in Santiago. These options are in addition to LVC’s new study-abroad program in China, which was added in fall 2013. The year also saw a record number of students study abroad, with the total surpassing the century mark for the first time (101). The previous record was 85 students, in both 2011–12 and 2012–13.
