Thank you to our trustees, volunteers, individual ‘friends’, the churches and church groups and our champions within them, schools, street collectors, community organisations and commercial and corporate supporters. To EVERYONE who has, with kindness generosity and commitment, given us their time and resources over the past year and by doing so have made a difference to the many homeless people we have been able to support, house and move on to better accommodation this year. Thank you to everyone involved in our Places of Change development; to our partners, Mole Valley District Council and Raven Housing Trust for all the hard work that has gone into the planning of the project, to our builders, Quinn London for keeping us on schedule and to our neighbours in Church Road, particularly at no.5, for their tolerance of the building work.

Thank you and welcome to the American Women of Surrey (AWS) who are supporting our work for the second year and who’s Giving Tree is pictured here with two ladies on their committee, Karen and Carmen. We will receive gifts from the tree for our clients and the hostel needs. Last year AWS provided substantial funds for clients to travel between Dorking and Leatherhead daily until next May and to equip the new hostel client rooms with televisions. This year they have collected cash for clients to cook a shared meal regularly and are fundraising for an addition to the new building when it is finished. Thank you and farewell to the International Community Church and Bocketts Farm who are both bowing out of meals provision – Dorking is a bridge too far on the journey from them but we are so grateful for the 20 years of support they have given us.

A New Hostel for 2011 This is the design for the new hostel. Extensions are being built to both sides and the rear of the building to accommodate the new layout. There will be a new office at the front of the house, a kitchen for in-house catering and training, linked by a rolling shutter to the dining room which can also be used for meetings and training, as can the new communal space at the rear of the new extension which will open out onto a small landscaped garden. We will have 8 single en suite rooms with a further 2 rooms sharing a bathroom, one of which is a double room available for homeless couples, making accommodation for 10 single people or 9 single and one couple. In addition there will be staff accommodation for overnight sleeping. To combine with the re-modelled premises we will have a new name (watch this space!) and a new style of service. Homeless clients will no longer be asked to leave the building between 9am and 6pm but will have their accommodation 24/7 and be offered support in the daytime to find work, training and volunteering opportunities. We will continue with the crucial work of finding next step accommodation for clients to move on to and expand the tenant support service which helps clients to adjust to the challenge of living independently and running their own life.

These are the aims and objectives of the new hostel service:

The rear extension roof will be a green sedum roof. (example pictured right). which we are particularly excited about because it makes an unusual and positive contribution to the environmental impact of the build. It will improve the aesthetics of the of the building , increase its thermal insulation properties, improve sound insulation and allow more rain to remain in the natural water cycle and less in the sewage system by reducing the flow off the roof.

Piercing cold Smoky black fumes The weight of the world on my shoulders Home is now all of that to me.

Freshly cooked meals And comfort everywhere. Home was all of that to me.

Hard stone pavement Dark, shadowy tunnel Ignored. Not seen. Not Heard Such hate in the air. Life is all of that to me now.

Hot mugs of cocoa Vases of wild flowers, Plucked from the meadow And love everywhere. Home was all of that to me. Soft, warm beds Clean, fresh air No trouble in the world And happiness everywhere Happiness was all of that to me.

News Trustees

Leatherhead Night Hostel is Looking for Trustees We are looking for people who want to make a difference and help us build a 21st century service for people who find themselves homeless in Surrey. LNH is a small organisation undergoing, with the aid of current government funding, an exciting transformation from a traditional night shelter into a 24/7 service for the homeless, with a focus on excellent accommodation and support towards re-integration into society. Regardless of whether you have previous Board experience, this would be a great opportunity for anyone interested in getting involved in an organisation that is having a real impact on the way that hostels are viewed in the local community. As a member of our Board you will find the governance responsibilities interesting and the approach professional. You’ll need expertise in one or more of the following areas: Business skills, HR, Fundraising, Public relations & Marketing, IT, Law, Housing, Learning Development An average of 4 hours commitment per month is required, including 10 evening Board Meetings per year. But this is not just about turning up to meetings – it’s about making a difference. If you would like informally to discuss this opportunity please feel free to contact our manager: ANGELA CARTER on 01306 898137.
