LEAP Annual Report 2018-2019

Page 1

From Our Leadership Welcome to our 2019 annual report! It reflects the amazing work that has been done by college and high school student counselors, our staff, volunteers, board members, children and families. LEAP worked with over 1000 children and teens over the last year, and none of this would be possible without the generosity of our donors, partners and friends.

Board of Directors Officers Ann Baker Pepe, Co-Chair Ed Cleary, Co-Chair Stephen Wizner, Vice Chair Susan Biel Kerley, Treasurer Cynthia Mann, Secretary Co-Founders & Past Chairs Anne Tyler Calabresi Roslyn Milstein Meyer Directors Sharon Brooks Marcus Mcferren Tai Richardson Ken Russell Alexis Smith Deloris Vaughn

Our focus is on children in high poverty neighborhoods. We work to make sure that they have access to academic support as well as the rich assortment of amazing activities that our city has to offer, from computer science classes to yoga to swim instruction to our massive Halloween festival to sports with the UNH Women’s field hockey team. Our kids are introduced to great authors from Walter Dean Meyers to Shakespeare. They get to talk to scholars ranging from Claudia Rankine to the PhD candidates at Yale’s Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance and Abolition. All of this spectacular work is done under the supervision of older teens and young adults who run our daily programs for younger children. It is amazing to consider just how many people are needed to make LEAP successful. But that’s what we mean in the LEAP motto: Creating A New Haven for our Children. Please enjoy the report and let us know how you would like to join us at LEAP!

Our Vision The neighborhoods served by LEAP have child poverty rates ranging from 35% to 58%; levels 3 times higher than the Connecticut average of 15%. In the New Haven School District, only 31% to 34% of Black and Latinx students passed the English Language Arts standardized test, compared to 66% of White students (DataHaven 2019). Leadership, Education and Athletics in Partnership, Inc. (LEAP) was created in direct response to these challenges. LEAP was founded in 1992 by leading educators, students and community activists in New Haven to provide highly vulnerable youth of color with educational and enrichment opportunities that are often inaccessible due to financial and social barriers. From the beginning, LEAP has used a multi-tiered mentoring model that focuses on young people of color as the solution, rather than the problem. LEAP's mission is to develop the strengths and talents of young leaders who create and implement year-round, community and school-based programs designed to achieve positive outcomes for children living in high-poverty urban neighborhoods.

Broadening Horizons

During the fall, spring, and summer components, LEAP counselors take their students on adventures all around New Haven for further educational and social enrichment. These are facilitated by community partnerships, such as the Yale University Art Gallery; Yale's Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition; and the Appalachian Mountain Club. In the summer, LEAP kids enjoy a "journey" outside of New Haven to visit museums and other attractions that connect to their LEAP curriculum. This summer, 260 kids ages 7-15 traveled to the Connecticut Science Center, Dinosaur State Park, Washington, D.C., or Philadelphia. Plus, all LEAP kids go on an overnight camping trip during the summer to explore nature and learn about the environment. This year, our younger kids enjoyed camping at the Calabresi farm, older campers journeyed to Black Rock State Park, and Leaders in Training went backpacking at the AMC Noble View Outdoor Center in Massachusetts. Through Outdoor Corps, LEAP’s partnership program with the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, 108 nine- and ten-yearold kids studied insects, birds, plants, food webs, and habitats through experiential lessons in local parks, at the Peabody Museum, and on their camping trip. Meet a LEAP Kid: Paije

Paije is 10 years old, and this is her third year at our Fair Haven North site. Paije explains why she spends her summers at LEAP: "My summers before LEAP weren’t as exciting because during LEAP we go swimming almost every week, we get to go to the park, and we get to explore nature. The good thing about it is we don't have to be on our phones. We can explore nature and we can take a step towards our careers, like college and stuff. LEAP has changed my life because I can explore more. I’m not always on my phone, I’m not always inside. I go outside almost every single day and it’s just better now that I’m in LEAP. It’s not the same old boring summer because I get to spend summer with my friends and meet new people.” “I like to be outside, like a lot. Now I'm more interested in becoming a person who digs up fossils. I might go to different countries to find dinosaur fossils and stuff. If I don’t become an archeologist, I really want to become the president, probably the first Latina president because I’m really good at making decisions and I’m really good at standing up for what I believe in."

Youth Development LEAP is committed to developing strong young leaders who are prepared to mentor LEAP children and strengthen their communities. Our Youth Development Program includes our Leaders in Training (LITs) who are 13-15 years old and our Junior Counselors (JCs) who are high school students. This year, LEAP served 93 LITs and employed 98 JCs.

Our Leaders in Training are in the transition from camper to counselor and middle school to high school, so their curriculum recognizes the social and educational development needs of this age group while preparing them to take on leadership roles in their community. LITs participate in trainings and workshops that help them problem-solve issues teenagers face, make good decisions around their own health and sexuality, and set goals for their future. LITs also apprentice under counselors in the classroom to prepare them to become our next generation of LEAP mentors. Our Junior Counselors are 16-18 year-old high school students who are paid members of the LEAP staff, and each works under the supervision of a Senior Counselor who guides and mentors them. Our JCs also receive resources such as professional development, financial literacy workshops, and academic coaching. LEAP ANNUAL REPORT | PAGE 12

College Access

In our Youth Development Program, our goal is to prepare our young adults for successful futures, and part of this is ensuring that they can pursue higher education. Our college access programming includes PSAT/SAT prep classes, writing workshops focused on college essays, career fairs, college advising, a week-long out-of-state college tour, and financial aid training for parents. In April 2019, our youth visited Maryland, Washington D. C., and Virginia, touring colleges including the University of Baltimore, Howard University, Georgetown University, and Norfolk State University. LEAP also awarded $13,000 worth of scholarships to our youth, rewarding them for their dedication and service to our LEAP community. Four students received the Regina Winters Scholarship, the Jay Bovilsky Scholarship, and/or the Stiefel Williams Family Scholarship. This year, 100% of our high school seniors graduated from high school and will be attending 2- or 4-year colleges, and we are so excited to see the amazing things they will do.

Meet a Leader in Training: Maurice

Maurice is 13 years old and this is his first summer at LEAP as part of the Leaders in Training program. When Maurice got his LIT application, he remembers working hard on it and turning it in two days later, as fast as he could. He wrote two paragraphs for each of the three open-ended questions. He remembers his call with Ms. Paris when he got off the waitlist and officially had a spot in LEAP as an LIT, and he was thrilled. “I like it here, it gives me the experience to work with kids. I look forward to having kids when I grow up, and LEAP makes me see how it can be challenging, but if you get to know the person and see how they feel, then you can cooperate and work with them. This gives me experience for the future.” “For future programs and jobs, I will not just sit in the back. I now know how to be the one to stand up, be in the front, and lead the way. That’s why I like LEAP, because it’s literally 'leaders in training.' I’m training to be a leader. I know how to conduct myself in a more organized and professional way."

LEAP ANNUAL REPORT | PAGE 15

Senior Counselors Our Senior Counselors (SCs) are college students who are responsible for overseeing children grouped by age and gender. They receive extensive training to prepare them for the tremendous responsibilities of teaching, inspiring, and caring for children as well as mentoring the Junior Counselors (JCs) with whom they partner. Their preparation includes training in literacy education, CPR, conflict resolution, classroom management, trauma-informed education, and even how to take their kids camping. Through our unique model, SCs receive genuine leadership opportunities with support from their supervisors.

LEAP values the opportunity for young people to grow within LEAP, progressively taking on increased responsibility and leadership. Our success is reflected in our high retention rate. Of our 63 SCs in summer 2019, 25 had been SCs in previous components, and 13 first got their start in the Children's Program or Youth Development Program. LEAP ANNUAL REPORT | PAGE 16

Meet a Senior Counselor: Darius

Darius began his journey at LEAP as a Leader in Training at age 13. He was a Leader in Training for two years, a Junior Counselor for two years, and came back to LEAP as a Senior Counselor. After half a decade at LEAP, Darius reminisces about what this organization has meant to him, saying: “When I was growing up I didn’t have a lot of structure. Rules and responsibilities weren’t familiar to me and kids would do whatever. LEAP taught me that everything we go through in life is important, and that taking responsibility in all aspects of life and in anything you do—from doing chores to going to school—that’s all that matters.” “Before LEAP I was very reserved. I was more of a follower, and I would let people dictate what I did. Now, as a counselor, I find myself being more vocal. People come to me with questions about anything—not just about the program, but about life in general. This growth is something I can attribute to LEAP and is what anyone who steps through these doors can expect to get.” Darius is a Journalism major at Central Connecticut State University and spent his summer with the 11-12 year-old boys at our Fair Haven South site. They were thrilled to have such an amazing counselor and role model.

LEAP Community Center At LEAP's Roslyn Milstein Meyer Community Center at 31 Jefferson Street, LEAPers have a space of their own equipped with a garden, gym, pool, computer learning center, kitchen, and much more. The Community Center is the home base for the Leaders in Training, while the LEAP children visit from their school-based sites to participate in enrichment activities. The Community Center also houses the offices of LEAP's full-time staff, and is where much of our professional development takes place, including LEAP’s extensive counselor trainings throughout the year.

Aquatics

According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the drowning rate for African American children is over 5.5 times that of their white peers. At LEAP, we seek to change this statistic by providing children with swimming lessons in our pool as part of our after-school and summer programs. Our high school and college student lifeguards and swim instructors are primarily young people of color from the same neighborhoods as our children. In fact, many of them first learned to swim at LEAP themselves. They serve as excellent examples that we can all become strong swimmers.

In 2018-2019:

365

LEAP kids took swimming lessons.

21

Swim instructors ages 16 to 20 served as teachers and mentors.

80%

of LEAP kids who took swim lessons said they wanted to swim more at LEAP.

LEAP Computer Learning Center (LCLC)

In our LCLC, our LEAPers get the opportunity to learn about coding, robotics, computer science, and STEM careers.

Our LCLC curriculum varies by age group, and includes building and coding a robot, designing apps, creating video games, vlogging and video editing, creating a blog, and learning the basics of programming languages like Python. Our students also learn about the wide range of careers in STEM and about role models of all backgrounds who have followed their dreams in STEM industries.

Our Partners

LEAP has built vibrant partnerships that enable us to provide free, accessible, high quality programs for young people. University programs such as Dwight Hall at Yale’s Urban Fellows, the Harvard Club of Southern Connecticut’s Summer Community Service Fellowship, and the University of New Haven's Community Work Study Program help connect passionate interns to paid opportunities in LEAP's office. New Haven Public Schools provide free classroom space in our five school sites. Neighborworks New Horizons provides free housing to LEAP Senior Counselors during the summer so they can reside in the neighborhoods where their students live. A broad variety of local groups and individuals provide free inkind services to LEAP that benefit our young people, ranging from support at our annual events, to occasional workshops at the LEAP Community Center, to a carefully planned curriculum of activities for children every week. These partnerships play a vital role in connecting young people from New Haven's lowincome communities with the city's rich cultural and educational resources.
