history Q & A with David Day How did you come up with the idea of writing a biography of Antarctica?

Where did the name “Antarctica” come from? The continent was named Antarctica by the ancient Greeks, when its existence was merely imagined. Although it was first seen by a Russian explorer in 1820, it was another twenty years before an American explorer saw the coastline and suggested it was part of an ‘Antarctic’ continent.

When was it finally mapped? The mapping of Antarctica took nearly two centuries. The early sailing ships couldn’t get close enough to chart much of the coast.

The Antarctic Treaty of 1959 was designed to manage the increasing competition for control of the continent as the Soviet Union began to establish bases there. The Treaty has worked well in encouraging cooperation between the signatories. However, the competition for control has continued nonetheless, albeit beneath the surface of diplomatic niceties.

How will this affect commercial operations in the future? Most activity in Antarctica is strictly controlled by the Treaty powers, with mining being banned for at least the next thirty years. However, it relies on the cooperation of Antarctic nations and could easily break down if, for instance, large oil reserves were discovered.

Antarctica: A Biography

OUR PICK oo

b

The countless books about Antarctica have concentrated on rivalry between explorers and the feats of later adventurers. It was crying out for a biography of the continent as a whole to be written. Antarctica has been sought after by explorers, desired by whalers and oil companies, and investigated by scientists. Yet it remains the only land without any recognised owners. Antarctica throws up so many questions for an historian and writing a biography was a good way of answering them.

From the 1940s, the use of planes helped to hasten the mapping, but it took the arrival of satellites to provide the first complete map of Antarctica. Later investigations have revealed the topography of the land that lies kilometres beneath the ice.
