David Kempster

Welsh-born David Kempster – whom Hugh Canning in the Sunday Times described as ‘Britain’s best dramatic baritone’ – opens his recital with great arias from La Traviata, Otello and Il Trovatore, marking the bicentenary of Verdi, opera’s master of melody and melodrama. Jumping continents and centuries, popular songs from Oklahoma, Show Boat and South Pacific bring different colours, mood and fashion. An afternoon recital to relish.

A new and remarkable introduction to the LDSM Festival programme. In the first half, the Chilingirian Quartet perform another ‘Beethoven at 40’ quartet, Op.95 from 1810, and the single-movement cello quintet by the recently-ennobled composer Michael Berkeley. Following the interval, LDSM Academy Artists join the Chilingirians, Garfield Jackson and Gregor Horsch in an enlarged ensemble to perform the first of Brahms’s sextets. Academy massed strings led by world artists promise a wealth of sound in this beautiful Church.
