The Haunting of LC

4

I was in drama south [located by LCMS] and I had to go turn on the lights and as I was walking, I started to hear pieces of wood falling in the room next to me. When I got the lights on, I went into the room and there was wood all over the floor and it looked like it had just been thrown all over. I left as soon as I could and I think about that every time I go into drama south.”

One third of Americans cannot name a single first amendment correctly. The amendment that gives the rights to people to speak freely, peacefully assemble, believe in what they want, freedom of the press, and the right to petition. Women couldn’t tell which amendment gives them the right to vote. The 19th amendment wasn’t passed until 1920, which means some of your great grandma’s couldn’t vote. There are some young people taking action about knowing their constitution. Mr. Drake’s first trimester American Government classes submitted essays about important current issues, and ones that are prominent to the younger generation. Can colleges favor minorities in admission over the same qualified or overqualified white students? Several students were chosen to attend the ‘Know your constitution’ luncheon. Juniors, Taylor Kriegler, Alyssa Dorris, Adam Tyson, Kitty Terhune, Brenden O’Brien, Dani McComas, and Abby Oswald were selected

as top contestants for this year’s essays. Every year at this annual luncheon, they give away five random, all-paid expense trips to Washington D.C. This year Dani McComas was lucky enough to be drawn to go up to Washington D.C. with Mr. Drake. McComas said, “I was super shocked, but so excited. I want to be a political scientist and work for the state legislature, but my dream is to become a congressman.”

BE YOURSELF

Show your true colors. BAILEY WEST REPORTER

REbeL is a student driven program to help change people's negative attitudes and to bring awareness to eating and body image concerns. It was created by Dr. Laura Eickman who is the founder of REbeL, and was brought to Lewis Central by Nurse Deb Blodget. Without her we wouldn't have the program at our school. Blodget says, “Its main purpose is to educate peer leaders to become agents of change in their environment.” She adds, “We are working to make our school a more positive place for people to be.” REbeL hopes to change the way people think and feel about themselves. Sophomores Lauren Deerfoot and Celest Herrera have been collaborating with some other students at Lewis Central to help fix people's thoughts on themselves. They are posting positive messages and posters around the school in hallways and on bathroom mirrors, completely covering them so that no one can see their reflection. Herrera says “REbeL is not really known by anyone yet because we are just starting out so it's pretty rough.” adding “I don't think people really care about it as much right now because it’s not really out there and the group is pretty small.”

The statement that they are trying to make by covering up bathroom mirrors is that you need to be yourself and no one else but you. REbeL has weeks where you have to be thankful and weeks where you have to be yourself. It helps bring people together and lets you just be yourself and helps you show who you truly are on the inside rather than using tons of makeup to cover your true identity from the world. “REbeL envisions a world in which individuals are valued for who they are, rather than how they look,” they plan to help fix the community's low selfesteem about their body image in society. They do it by having activities such as school wide awareness and education campaigns. They even started a twitter page where you can post selfies to show appreciation for yourself. Check out their twitter @LC_RebeL1 and @REbeLBeYOUtiful

GOLDEN GLOBES GOSSIP SOPHIE GILBERT REPORTER

Who’s winning this year?

A huge part of the world today is pop culture. Everyone loves to keep up with the Kardashians, read the latest ‘Jelena’ gossip, and tweet about their favorite celebrities. Not too long ago the Hollywood Foreign Press recognized the tremendous people in television and film by hosting the annual Golden Globes. 2016 will most likely be remembered as the year Leonardo DiCaprio finally won a Golden Globe, and he probably deserves a round of applause for how long he’s waited for that thing. Leo isn’t the only one who slid into the winner's circle this year, Jennifer Lawrence, Sylvester Stallone, Lady Gaga, and Denzel Washington also went home with awards that night. The whole show can become a bit

comical; the fancy dresses, the symphony cutting off the speeches, and the actors giving each other the side-eye are all great excuse to tune in. A similar award show coming up is the Oscars, but celebrities aren’t too happy about the nominations. Recently Jada Pinkett-Smith made a video talking about the nominations saying that the African-American community is not represented, and she and her husband, Will Smith, will not be attending the award show this year. The academy has failed to have any black nominations the past two years, and many say that this is because the academy members who choose the nominees are 94% white and only 2% black. Hopefully the cries of injustice will be heard and the community can once again become a place of equality.

“Stay Positive n Stay u :)”

Lauren Sanderson, otherwise known as “laurenthellama,” began her career as a motivational speaker in her late teens. She eventually created a twitter account (with the username @laurenthellama) where she ranted and talked about life. She became widely popular and eventually famous. She started making YouTube videos and became very popular there as well. She is now 20 years old and does it all, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Soundcloud, and Snapchat. Today she has 97.9K followers on Twitter. How did she become so famous on Twitter? She started a trend where every Tuesday she does something called “Tag Somebody Tuesday.” What she does is she tweets something along the lines of “Tag somebody who…” and then her followers will see it and they tag somebody they think it applies to. All of the Tag Somebody’s are compliments and are designed to spread positivity throughout social media, so there has never been a negative comment on there. Lauren also is a talented singer/rapper, and she started to express that more once she became famous. She started to post videos of herself singing songs by other people, but eventually she started making her own songs. Now she has them selling on iTunes, Spotify, and Soundcloud. She even went on tour. On January 15th, 2016 she came and did a show in Omaha at The Lookout Lounge and did a meet and greet afterwards.

Move over cable, there are some new faces coming around, streaming services that is. Netflix, Hulu, Showtime and many more are making headway in the competition scene with streaming services in the lead. Although cable has been around for as long as we can remember, streaming services are offering cheaper monthly bills for packages that offer customization for the viewers. Let’s use an example, if you were to get Cox Cable’s T.V Essential, offering 50+ channels, you’re paying $70.99 per month. For Netflix, payment plans start at $7.99 per month for a variety of movies, T.V. shows with full seasons and trending shows such as, ‘Orange Is The New Black, ‘The Square,’ ‘‘Lilyhammer,’ and more shown and created only on Netflix. Netflix and Hulu also provide their viewers with classic shows that are no longer on air or fan faves such as; ‘Grey’s Anatomy, ‘The Following, ‘The Office, and ‘Daredevil.’ Cable is going to have a hard time keeping up with views and getting customers to stay with the rise of streaming services. The popular shows that are holding spots for cable are shows like, ‘The Walking Dead.’ ‘American Horror Story,’ and ‘The Bachelor,’ are just a few that are popular amongst LC. Below is a chart for comparison of streaming services and cable. Streaming Service

GOOD GRADES = GREAT REWARDS The app that pays YOU. JOCELYN NIGHTSER CO-DESIGN EDITOR

Wouldn’t it be nice to get paid to get good grades? Many students would argue that if there were some beneficial awards for getting good grades, their motivation levels would increase. Well, since 2013 there has been a free app called Küdzoo. Küdzoo is an app that checks your grades 110 times a day. Students get paid in a numerous of different ways, whether it’s “Küdzoo cash,” coupons for free pizza, or even a shoot-a-round with NBA star Kevin Durant. The Küdzoo pitch that has teens nationally hooked on this app is “Good grades = Great rewards.” The app was created by Trevor Wilkins, CEO, and Logan Cohen, COO. This mobile app helps students find the motivation to get their work done with a reward for their studies. Not only do you get rewards for your grades, you can be qualified for many

different scholarships. How the app works is simple. When you get your report card, you open the app and it will have you use your camera to scan your report card. From there, the app will notify you of your rewards for your good grades and attendance. The goal of this app is to get kids involved and engaged in their schoolwork. All though you won’t earn real, cold hard cash, you will receive giveaways, scholarships, coupons and entered into Küdzoo contests. Earning prizes for your participation in school could be very opportunistic and another way to get students involved. Chicago’s attempt to use this app with their students has paid off a lot and have benefited many students. This app is available for android and iPhone users.

THEIR VIEWS ON HEALTH CARE DONALD TRUMP “The one thing we have to do is repeal and replace ObamaCare. It is a disaster. People’s premiums are going up 35 percent, 45 percent, 55 percent. but I’ll tell you what, the health savings accounts, I’ve been talking about it also. I think it’s a very good idea.” HILLARY CLINTON

“We need a universal health care system where we manage chronic diseases, where we say to the health insurance companies that they must cover everyone, they have to do it at an affordable rate.” BERNIE SANDERS “We have a massively dysfunctional health care system. At the end of the day, we need a costeffective, high-quality health care system, guaranteeing health care to all of our people as a right.” TED CRUZ

“I will repeal Obamacare and propose commonsense reform that makes health care personal, portable, and affordable. I will expand competition in the marketplace, empower consumers and patients to make healthcare decisions with their doctors, and disempower the government from interfering.” BEN CARSON

“The system that I would put in place would largely negate the need for Medicare or Medicaid. I’m not talking about getting rid of those programs. We’ll make health savings accounts available to people from the day that they are born to the day that they die, at which time they can pass it on to their family. We pay for it with the same dollars that we pay for our health care with.” MARCO RUBIO

“ObamaCare was supposed to help middle-class Americans afford health insurance. But now, some people are losing the health insurance they were happy with. Any solution should ultimately seek to promote a vibrant private market where individuals can buy health insurance the way we buy auto insurance, independent of our employer, with the kind of flexibility and coverage we need & at affordable prices.” JOHN KASICH

“I’m opposed to ObamaCare and I’ve been clear on that. In addition to that, instead of locking people up in prison who have mental health [problems], we give them treatment and keep them out and that saves us money. Instead of putting the drug addicted person back in prison and having them be released and back in prison, we treat them and we have a 10% recidivism rate.”

WAR ON DRUGS DONALD TRUMP

Trump argued in 1990 that the only way to win the War on Drugs was to legalize drugs and use the tax revenue to fund drug education programs. As he put it, “You have to take the profit away from these drug czars.” In his 2000 book, The America We Deserve. HILLARY CLINTON “I called for putting more officers on our streets, with greater emphasis on community policing to build trust while fighting crime, as well as new support for specialized drug courts & juvenile programs.” BERNIE SANDERS Bernie believes the current prohibition of drug use, colloquially known as the “war on drugs,” is a failed policy. He co-sponsored a bill to reduce recidivism, allowing incarcerated offenders access to pharmacological drug treatment. TED CRUZ “Given the undeniable costs and dubious benefits of mass, longterm incarceration of nonviolent drug offenders, Congress should take steps to give judges more flexibility in sentencing those offenders.” BEN CARSON “Carson has said he’s a fan of the war on drugs, and he told “The Blaze” he would “intensify it.” He also supports medical marijuana “in compassionate cases.” At a June campaign event in Colorado, he noted that “regular exposure to marijuana in the developing brain has been proven to result in a decreased IQ. The last thing we need is a bunch of people running around with decreased IQ.” MARCO RUBIO “We must be mindful of the great successes we have had in restoring law and order to America’s cities since the 1980s drug epidemic destroyed lives, families, and entire neighborhoods. I personally believe that legalizing drugs would be a great mistake and that any reductions in sentences for drug crimes should be made with great care.” JOHN KASICH “To treat the mentally ill, 10,000 of them sit in our prisons. It costs $22,500 a year to keep them in prison. I’d rather get them their medication so they could lead a decent life. -- We need to be in our schools. We need to be in our communities. We need to be in our synagogues. We need to be in our churches. We need to be everywhere. Don’t leave it to somebody else.”

a political performance GUN CONTROL

EDUCATION DONALD TRUMP “We’re going to be cutting tremendous amounts of money and waste and fraud and abuse. But, no, I’m not cutting services, but I am cutting spending. But I may cut Department of Education-Common Core is a very bad thing. I think that it should be local education. If you look at a Jeb Bush and some of these others, they want children to be educated by Washington, D.C. bureaucrats. HILLARY CLINTON

“To improve the quality of education, we need to improve instruction in the classroom. IN 2001, I proposed the National Teacher Corps, which brings teachers into the classroom, and a new initiative that would provide more schools with strong principals. Both became law.” BERNIE SANDERS “I voted against NCLB in 2001, and continue to oppose the bill. In my view, NCLB ignores several important factors in a student’s academic performance, specifically the impact of poverty, access to adequate health care, mental health, and nutrition.” TED CRUZ “We need to repeal Common Core. We need to get the federal government out of the business of dictating educational standards. Education is far too important for it to be governed by unelected bureaucrats in Washington. It should be at the state level or even better at the local level.” BEN CARSON

“We know that the best education is homeschool, the next is private schools, the next is charter schools, the next is public schools. If we want to change that dynamic we’ve got to offer some real competition to the public schools. We do everything we can to facilitate school choice, a voucher system.” MARCO RUBIO “I too believe in curriculum reform. It is critically important in the 21st Century. And it should happen at the state and local level. That is where educational policy belongs, because if a parent is unhappy with what their child is being taught in school, they can go to that local school board or their state legislature, or their governor and get it changed.” JOHN KASICH

“We simply don’t have the rigor, the control in the classroom, the innovation, or the personnel to keep pace. Our public school leaders are reluctant to take any action or bring about substantive change because they’re afraid they’re going to get sued, or they fear the loss of market share, or they worry they’ll innovate themselves straight out of their own jobs. Our public school system is log jammed, broken-down, paralyzed... and it’s been unable to reform itself.”

DONALD TRUMP

“This isn’t guns. This is about mental illness. You’re always going to have difficulties, no matter how tight you run it. Even if you had great education having to do with mental illness, you educate the community, still you’re going to have people that slip through the cracks.” HILLARY CLINTON “We have to look at the fact that we lose 90 people a day from gun violence. This has gone on too long and it’s time the entire country stood up against the NRA. The majority of our country supports background checks, and even the majority of gun owners do.” BERNIE SANDERS “Back in 1988, when I first ran for Congress, I supported a ban on assault weapons. And over the years, I have strongly supported instant background checks, doing away with this terrible gun show loophole.” TED CRUZ “The Second Amendment to the Constitution isn’t for just protecting hunting rights, and it’s not only to safeguard your right to target practice, it is a Constitutional right to protect your children, your family, your home, our lives, and to serve as the ultimate check against governmental tyranny — for the protection of liberty.” BEN CARSON “We should never compromise the Second Amendment. Of course, we should be thinking about what we can do to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of mentally unstable people. The two things are not incompatible.” MARCO RUBIO “My position on guns is pretty clear. I believe law-abiding people have a fundamental constitutional right to bear arms. And I believe criminals and dangerous people should not have access to guns. There are laws that protect those two things-but many of these new gun laws are ineffective.”

JOHN KASICH “I’m a Second Amendment advocate. I think people have a right to be armed. It’s about keeping the Second Amendment and it’s allowing legitimate gun owners to be able to do what they want, which is exercise their constitutional right.”

ANOTHER ONE

A LOST CAUSE?

JAKE LIEBER

SPORTS EDITOR

The Browns are facing a tough, yet smart decision with regards to young quarterback Johnny Manziel. Unfortunately however, it is not panning out as some may have hoped for. It was announced recently that the Cleveland Browns, after all the antics he has done and the constant negative press that he has caused to the Browns and himself, will cut Johnny Manziel. It was inevitable though. In his short, two year tenure with Cleveland, Manziel has had several incidents that have embarrassed the Browns franchise ranging from, off-field domestic disputes with his girlfriend, to wearing a disguise in Las Vegas the night before the team’s last game of the season. While Manziel was a standout quarterback at Texas A&M, he had a reputation for being a party animal and had an extensive police record, most notoriously his June 2012 arrest where he was charged with three misdemeanors. The year he came into the draft his reputation for lack of immaturity made several teams that were interested in him back out of considering him. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns with their first round pick because they had hopes of him becoming more mature in addition to his extensive amount of talent. Manziel’s first year in the league did not go as planned. He appeared in just five games and failed to make the impact he was expected to. The offseason after that year Manziel checked into a rehab center to help his addiction to alcohol. Coming into the 2015 season, Manziel was again buried on the bench in favor of Josh McCown. He only started six games and appeared in nine. A week before making an expected start a video of him partying during a bye week surfaced and was immediately demoted to third string. Manziel is now going to be a free agent but who on earth would sign him. He shown a complete lack of understanding of what it is to be a leader. If you can’t rely on your quarterback to be responsible then your team is ultimately setup to fail. Hopefully Manziel finds a team because he is a phenomenal athlete, but right now, seems like he is another guy who couldn’t handle the responsibility of being in the NFL.

The key to success is to pin the competition. BAILEY WEST REPORTER

Lewis Central made history by sending eleven wrestlers to state. The time and effort that they spent in order for the success they have gained out of the season is incredible. The Titans have five district champs in the midst. Paxton (106 pounds), Brandon Wieland (120), Caleb Kingery (145), Cory Lear (160) and Hayden Waldstein (195). In order to be a district champion you need to beat everyone who is in your weight class, which is not an easy thing to do. State wrestling was tough for the Titans because of all the people who were injured and recovering from injuries. Mac Southard (175) was in a match against a competitor from Creston, and during the third period the competitor took a shot, so Mac sprawled to avoid him and reshot and then he jammed his finger and broke his hand making him ineligible to play the rest of the season. Waldstein (195) severely injured his ankle when he was against Creston’s 4th ranked competitor. The eleven wrestlers who were sent to state are: the five district champs and Gabe Kjeldgaard (126), Kyle Kuckta (132), Mac Southard (152), Colton Lear (170), Damon Deyo (182), Tanner Miller (220).

State did not go as planned for the eleven wrestlers who qualified. Only two of the eleven wrestlers placed, being Paxton Whiteaker (106) placing 6th and Gabe Kjeldgaard (126) placing 8th. Kjeldgaard (126) lost in the first round but wrestled back. Whiteaker (106) won his first match 15-0 by a (tech fall). Whiteaker (106) says “I didn't place as high as I would've liked to, but it still turned out decent because it's the first time I placed at state and it’s my senior year.” He then adds “After High School I plan on going to Iowa Central and wrestle there for my first two years and see where that will take me.” Kjeldgaard (126) says “I think the season went pretty good, I was really happy with the end results especially because the team got eleven guys to state.” He then says “It was always my goal to place but I had a tough draw in the brackets, so I knew that it was going to be difficult but anything is possible when you go up to state.” Cameron Moore (160) says “The people who did not place in state still did a great job. We are all still very proud of the amazing season that we have had. The ending results are not what we had hoped for but we can only build on from there.”

JUST KEEP SWIMMING Marshalltown is yet again full of LC swimmers. BAILEY WEST REPORTER

Swimming is tougher than it looks. Most swimmers that go to state swim all year round in order to get good enough to compete with the rest of Iowa. The average week for a swimmer is made up of practice everyday except Sunday. Swimmers have double practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays which mean having practice in the morning and in the afternoon. Junior Garrett Higgins who has been swimming since he was 11 says, “I love the sport because of the speed, thrill and adrenaline that you get out of it.” Higgins says that he hates practices because of how tough that they can get, but in the long run they pay off. He enjoys swim meets more because they are more fun and exciting.

What is Johnny Manziel going to do?

There are many people who qualified at districts for swimming, but very few actually head to state. The Titans brought home 12th place overall for state swimming. Seth Jones, Ryan Price, Tyler Penney and Caleb Shudak, placed 16th at state in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:20.48. They also placed 16th in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.90. Last year at state Shudak, Penny, O’Brien and Luke Hemmingsen placed 13th but with a time of 1:39.69. This shows nothing but improvement for the team. In the 200 freestyle, Seth Jones placed 20th with a time of 1:48.93 and Ryan Price placed 5th with a time of 1:42.90. Last year Price got 4th place in the 200 freestyle but with a time of 1:43.73. Decreasing your time in swimming like Price did is a major thing to accomplish. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Price also placed 4th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:39.16, the year before also placing 4th but with a time of 4:41.94. Jones also competed in the 500 freestyle placing 8th with a time of 4:48.27. Shudak placed 7th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.26 and Penny placed 12th 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.87.

THE CHAMPIONS HAVE BEEN CROWNED The curtain falls on this year’s football season.

Football season is officially over. With the conclusion of the National Championship game and Super Bowl 50, it’s gonna be another long seven months until the 2016 football season. This is a good time to reflect on an amazing 2015 football season. In the second edition of the new college football playoff format, the final four teams were; Oklahoma, Michigan State, Alabama, and Clemson. Alabama cruised to an easy victory over Michigan State 38-0. Top seeded Clemson toppled Oklahoma 37-17 in a game where the lower seeded Sooners were favored to win. This lead to a No. 1 vs. 2 showdown between the Tigers and the Crimson Tide. This game was highlighted by the offenses where the Crimson Tide prevailed 45-40. Clemson quarterback DeShaun Watson had a big game completing 30 of 47 passes for 405 yards and four touchdowns. It wasn’t enough though to overcome the huge game from Alabama’s O.J. Howard who had a huge game with five catches for 208 yards and two

touchdowns helping his team to victory and taking offensive MVP honors. Super Bowl 50 was an exciting matchup of the AFC champion Denver Broncos and the NFC champion Carolina Panthers. This was a highly anticipated game as it could possibly be Peyton Manning’s last game ever played. On the other the Carolina Panthers were the new team on the block with exciting, young quarterback Cam Newton and a defense anchored by Luke Kuechly. Overall the game was a defensive showdown with only two offensive touchdowns scored. Both quarterbacks were swarmed by the opposing defense, but the game came down to the Broncos being able to capitalize on four turnovers thanks to a stingy Von Miller lead defense en route to a 24-10 Broncos win. With this win it gives Peyton Manning his second Super Bowl ring in his 18 year career. But with Peyton’s retirement decision up in the air the future for the Broncos is unknown while the Panthers look to have their core team next year for another playoff run.

TITANS LOOK TO IMPROVE

Titan bowling takes back to back trips to state. CO-EDITOR IN CHIEF

Last years bowling season was considered to be the best season in school history and it definitely had the ending result to prove it. The Titans qualified for state as a team, the first time in school history. This year’s Titans had the same idea. The team is led by a handful of seniors; two of them were on last years state team, Paul Renshaw and Justin Rosenbohm. The two stayed on varsity throughout the year and led their team to an 8-1 regular season record. Their record going into last years conference meet was an astonishing 9-0, The first time in school history. Renshaw is the team’s leader in pin per game average with 210. That places him 20th in the state. “quote from paul”. The Titans moved through the conference and district meet with ease, winning both and qualifying for state as a team. Last year’s trip ended in a heart

wrenching finish, falling short of 2nd place by 11 pins. This year was different for the Titans. As a team they placed 6th out of 7 teams with a pin total of 2838, 162 pins less than last years. As far as placing went, Lewis Central did not have a member in the top 10 but had three in the top 20. Rosenbohm was the 11th place finisher with senior Zack Lenihan and junior Austin Quakenbush taking the 19th and 20th spots. Although the Titans did not place as high as they might have liked too, they still represented the school with great pride.

CYBERCRIME OLD MARKET FACES DEVASTATION AND 100 years burned to the ground. HACKING ALLY BERGSTEN BUSINESS EDITOR

TAYLOR SMITH

CO-DESIGN EDITOR

Every day, about three quarters of Americans are the victim of a cybercrime. Whether they’re stealing your identity, financial information, or just hacking your computer to know they can, these criminals aren’t afraid to act on anyone who might let them. First, what you should do to protect yourself is download an antivirus software if you haven’t already. A good one is the program Avira, which was ranked #3 in 2014 for detecting viruses. Another is Bitdefender, which has the second highest detection rate as of 2015 and a free version. If you do already have an antivirus software, make sure to keep updating it regularly. Tips such as avoiding insecure websites and deleting unknown emails should be a habit for anyone planning to do any spending or banking online. Probably one of the worst crimes that could be committed is the stealing of someone’s identity or bank account, and it can be very easy if you don’t know how to protect yourself. Hackers can still contact you over the phone, called ‘phishing’, where they disguise themselves as a trusted entity in an attempt to acquire sensitive and personal information. In order to avoid this, don’t answer calls from numbers you don’t recognize, and if you are contacted by someone claiming to be a bank representative, hang up, and call back on the known customer service line. If they are who they say they are, they should have no problem letting you call back. Don’t become a victim of cybercrime, and take the necessary steps to protect your online identity. With how easy it is to access things on the internet, make sure your information isn’t something that’s available.

RARE VIRUS COMING TO US JOCELYN NIGHTSER

Beware of the mosquitos.

CO-DESIGN EDITOR

In May of 2015, a new outbreak of a virus called Zika emerged in Brazil, according to the Pan American Health Organization, or PAHO for short. This virus is spread through Aedes mosquito bites. Aedes mosquitoes also carry dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. The Zika virus has symptoms including fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. The Zika virus can also be transmitted through blood transfusion, and sexual intercourse or contact, but is not considered an STI or STD. Although the Zika virus has been considered rare, and has been around for 60+ years, a sudden outbreak in Brazil has affected over 4,000 people. Between 2010 and 2014, there has not been more than 175 cases reported of Zika virus which has had scientists concerned since the severity of it that started in April 2015. The first documented appearance of the Zika virus was in 1947 where a captivated monkey near Lake Victoria in Uganda was found in its bloodstream. The name Zika came from the Zika Forest in Uganda. Zika virus has a very large effect on pregnant women and their babies. The birth defect called microcephaly, which is when a

child’s head is smaller than expected due to the baby’s brain developing improperly in the womb. This is usually an outcome to a newborn child whose mother has the Zika virus. Although there is no vaccination or cure of the Zika virus, its symptoms are mild and only stays in the blood system for about a week. The concern of obtaining the Zika virus is mild, considering that the virus doesn’t have much of an effect on people if they aren’t traveling in European countries while pregnant.

According to statnews.com, the purple areas present the most danger for acquiring the virus.

The United States moves to stop the sale of microbead products.

Just before holiday break, a shocking bipartisan agreement in congress passed a bill to ban those tiny plastic microbeads that can be found in a variety of body and facial products (this includes those which claim the beads are biodegradable). While these little beads seem harmless, about 1.4 trillion of them travel through our sewage systems and flood the ocean each year, being eaten by fish and other ocean life. A typical four ounce tube can have up to 350,000 microbeads in it. As Miyoko Sakashita, Center for Biological Diversity oceans program director, said, “Our oceans have been choking on these tiny plastic microbeads for way too long. This is a huge and important step toward protecting fish, birds and other ocean wildlife hurt by plastic pollution. I applaud the Senate for following California’s

lead and voting to eliminate this pointless and harmful source of plastic pollution.” So how does this affect us? Almost a quarter of the fish sampled from fish markets in California and Indonesia contained human-made debris (plastic or fibrous material) in their gut, according to a study from the University of California, Davis, and Hasanuddin University in Indonesia. While this may not be directly harmful to humans since it’s not exactly common for someone to eat a fish gut, studies are being done to determine if chemicals in the plastic material can transfer and/or harm the meat. The bill states that the manufacture of micro-bead filled products will be prohibited as of July 1st, 2017, and the sale of these products will be prohibited as of July 1st, 2018.

What brought you to Lewis Central? Clay: This job did. I was living in Ohio when someone told me about this job. I was in grad school and delivering artwork to Kansas City and I thought there was no way I would move to Iowa and teach high schoolers, but here I am and I love it!

How did you get interested in pottery? Clay: I took a pottery class in high school and I hated it because the

teacher didn’t care about it at all. Then I took another one in college and I loved it, I was already a painting major and I knew I was gonna be an artist since I was three. Is there any connection between your name and your interest in pottery?

Clay: Well my real name is Clayton, but people have always called

me Clay. There’s really no connection, just a funny coincidence! What are some of your favorite travel experiences?

Clay: I travel to art schools in Tennessee and Colorado in the

summer, and I love doing that. Also my wife and I are going to Mexico in February. What do you like about traveling?

Clay: I like getting out of Council Bluffs, Iowa and seeing new places.

What are some other things you like to do?

Clay: Draw, paint, tennis, and weightlifting. Are you a Harry Potter fan?

Clay: I was never a Harry Potter fan before I was 35. I had never read the books or seen the movies, but my wife loved them. She convinced me to look into it and I’ve been a fan since. My son August’s middle name is Potter, because we are fans of it and because I’m a potter.

Kitty Terhune What age did you start singing? kitty: Well, I remember starting to sing when I was really little, I would be like be that weird kid in like first grade in the lines, and the teacher would always tell you to be quiet, and I would be at the end of the line humming. I started writing songs when I was in third grade, but they were really bad, like so bad. When I look back at them, I’m like wow did I really write that? What various instruments do you play? kitty: I play the piano, I first learned how to play the violin in third grade, then learned the guitar in fourth grade. I tried playing the saxophone in 6th grade for like a day, but it didn’t work out. How has your YouTube channel helped your singing career? Kitty: It’s been going pretty well. On my channel, it’s a lot of me doing fun things, it’s constantly me challenging myself to do mash-ups, and stuff that I think would be cool to have on there. There are tons of channels that have covers of songs. How is your current album going? I’ve heard you might be on iTunes? kitty: I’m working on it for 2016, I’ve got 14 songs already written, only two of them are on my YouTube channel, and one is on my soundcloud. I’m kind of roughing out the recordings, and I’m going to edit them. As a senior gift, I’m hoping my parents will let me get my songs recorded in a professional studio. What are your plans for the future? kitty: I don’t know, a lot of people tell me I should be a music major, but I also like premed, and the two just don’t really go together. The way I describe it makes more sense to be a surgeon with a hobby of singing, rather than a singer with a hobby of surgery. It kind of sounds like an episode of criminal minds in the making.

SEX ED: LET’S TALK The Job Interview The world is changing, The not so so should Sex Ed. successful edition MATEO RODRIGUEZ Sex is considered a tough subject to many students and teachers in the classroom. When it comes to educating the youth about sex, they deserve to know the information that could help them live healthier, sensuous lives. As we enter 2016, a big question on educating adolescents about sex has been brought up for a variety of different reasons. Given the prior information along the years, there is a lot more to soak in and learn about. For example, Bruce Jenner coming out to the public as a transgender and changing his identity to Caitlyn Jenner started a revolutionary concept around the world. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) dictionaries have been providing us with new definitions based on sexual preferences. The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has since legalized same-sex marriage as of June 26th, 2015. Sex education has provided a lot of useful information. In 1983 when AIDS were discovered, people everywhere thought that it would only effect those who considered themselves homosexual. Now we must take another step forward and modernize Sex Ed to help us with information that we’re not familiar with. Another thing we should do is be more open about the subject of LGBT and its terms such as; asexual, gender identity, and more specifics that could be beneficial in and out of the classroom. There has already been a reintroduction to the bill that includes LGBT called the Real Education for Healthy Young Act. The goal of this program is to give precise education over LGBT, including young students who are or are not of the LGBT nature, or have a self-identification problem. I think with this bill reintroduced, we should make that big step that I’ve previously mentioned, and actually pass this bill. For more information visit www.americanprogress.org

MARVEL OR DC? Who will win the box office in 2016?

BAILEY TEPLY

CO EDITOR IN CHIEF

Marvel has ruled the 2010’s with their new take on loved superheroes. They are giving new life to the comic book adaptations, and DC is not far behind. In 2016 Marvel plans to add onto storylines that they have already created and start a new one while DC is putting out all new content. The two companies are going to use 2016 as a set up year, meaning that the movies that come out this year will set up other movies to come. Marvel is releasing the new Captain America movie which will lead into Infinity Wars while DC’s Batman v. Superman will set up The Justice League. Out of the two I think that the new Captain America, Civil War, movie will be more successful this year due to the Civil Wars comic book adaptation success. In my opinion, Marvel will again win the box office again this year but DC is definitely erasing Marvels lead. Disney plans to put out four superhero related movies this year compared to the two that DC will release. Not only is the amount of movies on Marvel's side, so is the subject matter. Even though DC has two big, anticipated movies coming out this year, Marvel has set themselves up better in the advertising category and they are giving the people what they want to see. Both, Marvel and DC, are releasing a more darker movie this year: Marvel's being Deadpool and DC's Suicide Squad. Deadpool has already came out and has done very well in the box office, giving Marvel the early lead. All that being said, 2016 will see Marvel keeping its place in front, with DC not far behind.
