Smith Park boosts business in Pico Rivera

Renovations are being planned for Smith Park in Pico Rivera. Smith Park, located at the corner of Mines and Rosemead Blvd. will be getting some upgrades that will include: Amphitheater, restroom-concession building, basketball court and play area to be demolished and replaced. New baseball and softball fields, with grass and infields, public address system, bleachers, covered dugouts, lights and irrigation. Group picnic area adjacent to the Aquatic Center new playground equipment, New electronic scoreboards, and much more. Smith Park is host to several events throughout the year. It also serves as a practice facility to several of the local baseball and football teams. With all of the renovations taking place at Smith Park, it is hard for

surrounding businesses not to take notice. Chuck E. Cheese is one such business who is supporting the local economy by renovating its store and expanding by an approximately 3, 000 square feet. Chuck E. Cheese, which is located in Park Plaza Shopping Center, directly across the street from Smith Park, is a synergistic tenant to the park, providing good food, entertainment and a place for simply having fun. Several businesses are vying for space at the Park Plaza Shopping Center. “This is a great opportunity for a business to be a part of the progress”, says Klara Bergman, who represents the Park Plaza Shopping Center. If you know of any business that is looking to move to the Pico Rivera area, please consider the Park Plaza Shopping Center. Contact Klara Bergman at 805.260.6444.

Pico Rivera Sheriff's Lunch hosted by Vernola’s Towing Vernola’s Towing Service held their annual Sheriff’s Appreciation Barbeque in early April. There were give-aways galore and some of the most delicious food available. It is a big deal for us to come out and show support for our local Sheriffs, they do so much more for the community than keeping us safe", said Luigi Vernola. Most importantly, many in the community and the city also showed their support for the Sheriff’s and all that they do for the city of Pico Rivera. our community. Your service will be the legacy to this fine organization. Throughout my years of service to the Pico Rivera Chamber, I wanted to make a difference and always have in mind Steve Job’s Three Rules of Life…as it goes like this. 1. Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. 2. Don't be trapped by dogma which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. 3. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition - they somehow already know what you truly want to become. The nature of life is constant change. The world is not the same today as it was yesterday, and it will be different still tomorrow. We can be victims of that change, or we can proactively drive change. The way of success that I’ve learned is that: Visualize the end result, Plan, Take action, Persevere, Re-plan, Take action, Persevere.

As your president, there were a lot of times in this environment that I needed to adapt to the new climate and need to persevere. I was warned from the start that I need to be prepared and to never loose FOCUS, for at the end of the day, you are still the same person as you are if you believe from your heart and from within. The Pico Rivera Chamber has become part of my family. YOU are the family that I hold close to my heart. I was fortunate to have a distinguished group of men and women composed of our Chamber’s Board of Directors and Chairperson on each event and programs for 2009-2010. The strong teamwork that emanates from this group really allowed the Chamber in achieving and able to reach our goals together, our "A New Beginning." I am indeed very grateful to all of you.

Is E-mail marketing worth it? E-mail marketing is a form of direct marketing which uses electronic mail as a means of communicating commercial or fundraising messages to an audience. In its broadest sense, every e-mail sent to a potential or current customer could be considered e-mail marketing. However, the term is usually used to refer to: •sending e-mails with the purpose of enhancing the relationship of a merchant with its current or previous customers and to encourage customer loyalty and repeat business, •sending e-mails with the purpose of acquiring new customers or convincing current customers to purchase something immediately, •adding advertisements to emails sent by other companies to their customers, and •sending e-mails over the Internet, as e-mail did and does exist outside the Internet (e.g., network e-mail and FIDO). Researchers estimate that United States firms alone spent US$400 million on e-mail marketing in 2006.There are advantages and disadvantages to using traditional advertising mail in comparison to e-mail. Advantages E-mail marketing (on the Internet) is popular with companies for several reasons: •An exact return on investment can be tracked ("track to basket") and has proven to be high when done properly. E-mail marketing is often reported as second only to search marketing as the most effective online marketing tactic.[2] •Advertisers can reach substantial numbers of e-mail subscribers who have opted in (i.e., consented) to receive e-mail communications on subjects of interest to them. • Over half of Internet users check or send e-mail on a typical day. • E-mail is popular with digital marketers, rising an estimated 15% in 2009 to £292m in the UK.[4] Disadvantages A report issued by the e-mail services company Return Path, as of mid-2008 e-mail deliverability is still an issue for legitimate marketers. According to the report, legitimate e-mail servers averaged a delivery rate of 56%; twenty percent of the messages were rejected, and eight percent were filtered. Spam Laws Companies considering the use of an e-mail marketing program must make sure that their program does not violate spam laws such as the United States' Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act (CANSPAM),the European Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, or their Internet service provider's acceptable use

Internet Marketing 101 policy. Opt-in e-mail advertising Opt-in e-mail advertising, or permission marketing, is a method of advertising via e-mail whereby the recipient of the advertisement has consented to receive it. This method is one of several developed by marketers to eliminate the disadvantages of e-mail marketing. Opt-in e-mail marketing may evolve into a technology that uses a handshake protocol between the sender and receiver. This system is intended to eventually result in a high degree of satisfaction between consumers and marketers. If optin e-mail advertising is used, the material that is e-mailed to consumers will be "anticipated". It is assumed that the consumer wants to receive it, which makes it unlike unsolicited advertisements sent to the consumer. Ideally, opt-in e-mail advertisements will be more personal and relevant to the consumer than untargeted advertisements. A common example of permission marketing is a newsletter sent to an advertising firm's customers. Such newsletters inform customers

of upcoming events or promotions, or new products.[8] In this type of advertising, a company that wants to send a newsletter to their customers may ask them at the point of purchase if they would like to receive the newsletter. With a foundation of opted-in contact information stored in their database, marketers can send out promotional materials automatically. They can also segment their promotions to specific market segments.

Social Media: Friend or foe to your business?

Facebook states it has 400 million active users--and yes, that's larger than the population of the United States. Social media issues permeate the workplace. Not only are your employees likely checking social media sites on their work computers or company or personal mobile devices during work hours, they are also probably "friending" or "following" co-workers, supervisors, or subordinates from their personal social media accounts. The explosion of social medial has raised a host of employment-related issues, from sexual harassment and discrimination to background checks and wrongful termination. According to a June 2009 survey of 100 hiring managers at small, midsize and large companies conducted by Jump Start Social Media, 75 percent of managers said they use LinkedIn to research job candidates before making a job offer; 48 percent check out applicants’ Facebook sites; and 26 percent visit applicants’ Twitter sites.

The phenomenon called "social media" is now inescapable. It's embodied by sites like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and Twitter, to name a few. Regardless of whether you're a social medialite, your employees are more than likely already indoctrinated into the on-line cul- See SOCIAL MEDIA ture. CONTINUED ON 6
