Cerritos observes Memorial Day paying tribute to fallen heros By Jerry Bernstein

Members of the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion 1st Marine division stationed at Camp Pendleton, with members of their families, honor fallen Marines Sgt. Michael W. Heeds, Jr. and Lance Corporal Alenjandro J. Yazzie who gave their lives in Afghansian in defense of our country.

Seniors complain to Norwalk Council about change in Nutrition Van schedule by Shelley Henderson Two dramas played out at the June 1 meeting of the Norwalk City Council. The first was when Cassie Ritz, speaking for many seniors complained about an unannounced change on May 24 in the schedule of the nutrition van. The van is one of the services provided under the Older Americans Act. The change resulted in extensive waiting times for pickup and prolonged van rides between the Senior Center and home. Some seniors stood at the curb waiting for pick-up with no idea when the van might arrive. Others found themselves stuck on the van for up to two hours on the ride home. Councilman Mendez assured Ms. Ritz that staff from the City’s Department of Transportation was already looking into the problem. Councilwoman Kelley stated her belief that a representative from the City’s Transportation Department should talk directly to the bus riders. “Be there at the Senior Center as they get on and off the bus,” she urged James C. Parker, Norwalk Director of Transportation. Mr. Parker took the heat for the mixup. He emphasized that response was

delayed because of a lag in his hearing about the problem, and because of inaccuracies introduced by not hearing directly from those involved. He assured the Council and the seniors attending the meeting that he would deal with the problem. The Older Americans Act, originally passed by Congress in 1965 established the Administration on Aging (AOA). AOA organizes and delivers social and nutrition services to older Americans. For more information on the Older Americans Act, visit the website of the Administration on Aging at www.aoa.gov. Commission Appointment The second item involved the appointments by Councilman Rick Ramirez of Candi Martinez to serve on the Public Safety Commission and Priscilla Mermingez to the Parks and Recreation Commission. No second for the nominations was made until Councilman Michael Mendez offered a second solely for Priscilla Mermingez. The amended motion was unanimously adopted and Ms. Mermingez was sworn in. Cerritos observed Memorial Day May 31 with a tribute to the young men and women who have given their lives in defense of our freedom here in the United States. Congresswoman Linda Sanchez told those gathered by the Veterans Memorial that as a new mother, she could feel the deep sadness one would get upon hearing that their son(s) had been killed in action. “We need to be proud that they were willing to give there all for us.” Tom Tislow, a member of the VFW Post 1846 read a poem by the late Dutch Ducharme, a VWM member and retired Marine. Tribute was also paid to former VFW Commander Rudy Pulido. Also honored were fallen Marines Sgt. Michael W. Heeds, JR and Lance Cpl Alejandro J. Yazzie who were killed in ac[See MEMORIAL DAY Page 9]

OPINION and LETTERS to the EDITOR California municipalities spend nearproblem. Small companies are hiring ilPublisher's Rant ly $25 million each year just to collect legal immigrants to skirt federal and state

Emotions get in the way of common sense

In a heated 3-2 vote, the LA County Board of Supervisors this week took the unusual and highly controversial step of boycotting Arizona when it comes to the county’s business with the state. The vote suspends county travel to the state and calls for a report within two weeks on how the county might severe contracts and divest from bonds in the county’s pension fund. Estimates place the lost revenue to Arizona $25 million. Voting against the boycott was Supervisors Knabe and Antonovich. LCCN applauds the no votes. Both Molina and Ridley-Thomas echoed the sentiment of many that this is a bad bill, I agree. (There needs to be comprehensive reform, not a state-bystate reform movement.) But to let your emotions get in the way of common sense and hurt residents of Arizona who have nothing to do with the bill is just wrong and plain ignorant. The new law is already having an effect on tourism, and it could get worse as time goes on. 23 large groups of conventioneers have canceled plans to come to Phoenix, costing the city as much as $10 million in business. Small mom and pop retailers and restaurants are bracing for the worse and now local politicians from neighboring states are pandering for votes by taking up the issue during session. And who is at fault? Lawmakers more worried about the November vote than a boycott. The boycott does not address solutions. We don’t have illegal immigration problem, we have an illegal employer

payroll taxes. A true reform must start with ensuring compliance by employers, not attempting to pass a bill that is really just a license to racially profile. Here are some of the arguments against immigrants: 1. They take our jobs, 2. They don’t pay taxes, 3. They crowd our schools and emergency rooms. How do they take our jobs if they have no documentation to apply for the job? Simple, employers are hiring illegally and paying cash for their services. Prosecute the employers and that will slow the influx of immigrants. Taxes are not prejudiced. If immigrants pay rent, buy food, buy gas, spend money at restaurants then they are paying taxes and fueling the local economy. Most immigrants (if legal) would start work for minimum wage and would not pay any state or federal taxes anyway because they are under the poverty line. Public schools receive money for each child in attendance, so if the immigrant kids (most of whom are probably US citizens) stop going, the school loses the funding, teachers would get fired. Overcrowding of emergency rooms is a problem, but if it is assumed they are all immigrants, a reality check is in order. Over 40 million Americans are uninsured. The same goes for our jail system. Yes it is a bad bill and yes illegal immigration is a problem, but to boycott the state is an emotional response not a solution to the problem.

and dispose of plastic bag waste. Less than 5% of plastic grocery bags are recycled each year statewide, so the remainder clogs precious landfill, litters public spaces and harms animal life when the bags infiltrate waterways. Retailers will still be able to distribute paper bags, so long as they contain at least 40% post-consumer content. Shoppers who forget their reusable bags have the option of purchasing a paper bag at checkout. Heavy-duty reusable bags are convenient, environmentally friendly alternatives that have been embraced by millions around the world. The bill now goes to the state Senate, which is expected to vote on the bill later this summer. “Today marks a critical milestone in the ongoing battle to rid our oceans and watersheds of harmful, wasteful plastics,” said Mark Gold, president of Heal the Bay. “We congratulate the Assembly for not only helping to save the marine environment, but also for saving taxpayer dollars.” Dozens of progressive local governments statewide are poised to curb the use of plastic bags.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Finally, a bag tax California state legislators voted today to bar the distribution of single-use plastic shopping bags at grocery stores, convenience stores and pharmacies statewide, buoyed by consensus support by a broad coalition of environmental, local government, union and business groups. In a 41-27 vote, the California Assembly approved AB 1998, a bill authored by Assemblymember Julia Brownley (DSanta Monica) that seeks to end the environmental and fiscal waste created by Californians’ use of 19 billion single-use plastic shopping bags each year. Heal the Bay, which sponsored AB 1988, has led the legislative fight to enact a bag ban for more than five years as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle plastic pollution. AB 1998 also has the crucial backing of the California Grocers Assn., the California Retailers Assn. and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), whose members have called for a uniform and environmentally sound single-use bag policy statewide.

Thanks to our Vets and Cerritos I just returned from the Cerritos Memorial Day Ceremony. I can't remember a time when I have been so emotionally moved. The entire ceremony was flawless and stirring, a fitting tribute to all the servicemen and women who never made it home. My special thanks to Connie Hinger who was the event planner and to the city of Cerritos for hosting the event (as always, a first class act), Mickey Christiason who was the Friends coordinator, Dorothy Owen who decorated the Friends booth, Maria Skiles for the outstanding floral wreaths, Tom Tislow for his epic reading of Dutch Ducharme's poem and remembrance of veterans recently deceased, and most importantly for the presence and participation by the Marines and Sailors of the 1st CEB. I was personally overwhelmed by the polish and solemn presentation of the 'Rifle, Helmet, and Boots' ceremony, which was a fitting tribute to both Sgt Heede and LCpl Yazzie. Also my thanks to Ken Coulter, General Manager of TGI Friday's, who offered to host lunch for the dozen or so Marines who participated in today's ceremony. The whole event reminded me of how lucky I am to live in the greatest country in the world. Chuck Sooter

in an atmosphere that was described by Ron Wilson, Blagden’s attorney, as a Kangaroo Court. Wilson told the Board that his client had not been given an opportunity, until this board meeting, to tell her side of the story. He said in America due process is fundamental with an opportunity to be heard and the calling of witnesses. “None of this has happened,” he asserted.” He said four months after she was put on an administrative leave she received a performance evaluation. He questioned the timing and asked if anyone had ever heard of such a thing. “Unusual to be out of work for four months and then get a performance evaluation.” He accused the District of setting up a sham. What is happening, he stated, is she is being set up and forced to file a lawsuit. Mrs. Blagden has been denied any informal resolution and has been denied meetings with the superintendent or her supervisor. She has also filed a claim with the District, which was denied. He said he has not had an opportunity to be heard. Even the District’s investigation summary, which he said demonstrated a conflict of interest by the District’s law firm, cites her lack of leadership but there is no evidence, names, or details in it. “It was obviously retaliation for reporting the death threats to the law enforcement officials.” He told the Board they should not just rubber stamp what their lawyers and superintendent says, You each have an obligation to individually learn what is going on and get the evidence. You need an independent lawyer to give you advice, not a conflicted voice. Rich Blagden, husband of Mrs. Blagden, questioned the District’s motives. He cited where Dr. Smuts was asked at the Mar. 5 Stowers PTA meeting- a meeting composed of parents who were concerned about the safety of their children, where Kevin Kirby, the teacher who made the death threats against two Stower teacher, was living. Dr. Smuts said Kirby’s attorney indicated he no longer lived in Southern California, and as such, they didn’t have to be concerned about the safety of the campus. The LCCN has Mr. Kirby was served an injunction at his Long Beach residence a few days later.. He accused Dr, Smuts of being misleading and said he was more concerned with a cover up He also questioned the evaluation report for the years 2008 and 2009 that his wife did not carry out her responsibilities as principal. During that period Stowers became a candidate for an International Baccalaureate Program, a world renowned, vigorous, and respected pro-

gram. “How,” he asked, “ does this happen, if the school’s principal is not doing her job? Evaluators must fly out and see that you are doing something diplomatic for the community, and that you have the support of your staff.” Mrs. Bladgen’s second attorney, Maurice Chenier said he wished to defer his five minutes to her other attorney Mr. Wilson. Board President Spitzer objected and said that was not allowed. He replied under Roberts Rule of Law that it was indeed permissible. Mrs. Spitzer then ruled, “that is not how our procedures work. You can speak only to one particular issue.” Disagreement on Facts Responding to the accusations, Dr. Smuts said reassignment of Mrs. Bladgen is based on the District’s loss of confidence in her diligence to be an effective school administrator. He said there have been concerns about her being an effective school administrator since June 2008 and she has been aware of those concerns and has received written notification that it was necessary to improve her performance. Her failure to do so resulted in her being placed on a job performance improvement plan for 2009-10 school year. He said despite these measures she did not improve her performance during the 2009-10 school year. This is the basis for her demotion. He said she was not demoted because of the Kirby incident and her reporting it to the sheriff. He also accused her of waiting three days before reporting to the District about Mr. Kirby. Refuting the evaluation as a fabrication, Mrs. Bladgen said in May 2008 this all came about after a eeting when Dr. Hanson, Assistant Superintendent of Human Relations, started sharing confidential information about a teacher in front of her colleagues. I knew that was wrong and stood up and said the teacher did nothing wrong. She said later she was called into Dr. Hanson’s office and told “never, ever to go against her again.” That fall, she said, she took ill. She said Kathy Frazer was her boss at the time and we worked together. “I was coming in late and she knew I was.” The reason I was coming in late was because I had to go to the doctor. However, I was directed by Dr. Hanson and Mrs. Cheryl Bodger, Director of School Services, to disclose my medical condition to my staff, which is completely illegal, but I did it anyway. I wish I had spoken up at that time,” she added. “The other event occurred when Kevin Kirby was assigned to my school. I was told there were no concerns. Dr. Hanson had told me Mr. Kirby had been on leave the previous year. I asked if there was any concern I should be aware of.” She accused Dr. Hanson of lying when she

told her no. “About October or November 2009 I discovered something was terribly wrong with this teacher. I called Dr. Hanson and she informed me a criminal arrest was made sometime in the past.” Outside Advice Sought Following the Kirby incident, Mrs. Bladgen said she called a friend in the District Attorney’s office, under attorney-client privilege, and asked what she should do. “I’m responsible for these kids and my staff,” she told her. She referred me to another attorney familiar with education law. “He was shocked that the District kept this man in a classroom.” She said she then called Dr. Smuts and shortly thereafter Dr. Hanson called her, upset that she had to contact the commission on teacher’s credentials and find out was going on. She said those are the facts and that is what is going on.

Dr. Hansen said these are serious allegations. “I said, I know that’s why I’m calling you. I need advice. I need help down here.” Dr. Hansen called Steve Harris [AFT] and sent him down. I was told Mr. Kirby was going for a physical and mental health check-up with the paramedics. No one told me anything after that. Laura Rico, AFT President, stopped me from talking to the paramedics. She also told me not to go to the hospital for a follow up. Mr. Kirby came back the next day to do some lesson plans. I told him he couldn’t go back to his class because he didn’t have a doctor’s note. He asked me who was taking leadership here. I said I was. I was under the impression he was being treated for his mental health problems. On Friday my secretary and I learned he could return. I also discovered she had seen him looking through a glass window at the two teachers saying, “I hate them.” It was then I realized they were afraid of him and this was before they were told

about the death threats. She immediately called Dr. Hanson and said Kirby could not come back to work Monday. I was told to get statements from the teachers before they learn about the death threats. Shortly there after Dr. Hanson called me and told me not to get any statements, but I told her I had already gotten them She then told me not to get any more statements and not to say anything about the death threats to anyone. I tried to contact Dr. Smuts and Dr. Sieu over the weekend on my cell phone, but received no return call. On Monday morning Dr. Smuts called me and I told him I went to the La Mirada Sheriff on Sunday afternoon and was told I had to tell the teachers about the threats. Finally on Monday morning, she said Dr. Hanson came into her office. She had talked to Dr. Smuts and his concern was we had to get Mr. Kirby out of here. On June 3, a Board member discussed the Board’s decision with LCCN and admitted Dr. Smuts report was accepted as accurate. However, the Board Member had previously asked the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources for additional documentation on the matter and was told she had to get Dr. Smuts approval. None was received.

Cerritos Council adopts revised city bikeway system route map In accordance with the Cerritos General Plan, the City Council adopted the Cerritos Bikeway System Route Map in 1975. The map established a system of bikeways to promote cycling as a recreational resource and an alternative to automobile use. The updated map integrates bikeways wherever possible so all City residents have safe bikeway access to local destinations, including schools, parks and local points of interest, as well as convenient connections to regional routes. A transportation engineering firm reviewed existing Cerritos bikeways to determine any necessary changes, updates and/or improvements and reviewed all arterial roadways in Cerritos and their capacity to integrate additional bicycle routes, especially in connection

with established regional bike paths. Over the years, changes in traffic counts and the addition of center medians on many arterial streets have significantly altered available lane width and led to the approved removals. However, the removal of any stretch of existing or proposed bikeway designation does not prohibit bicycle use in that area. The majority of the improvements will be incorporated into future pavement rehabilitation capital projects. In addition, State Transportation Development Act funds may be available to offset a portion of the costs, including engineering expenses, construction costs, retrofitting existing bicycle facilities, signal controls for cyclists, bicycle loop detectors, rubberized rail crossing and bicycle-friendly drainage grates. Once the revised plan has been fully implemented (as funding is available), the City will have added 45 lane miles of Class II and III bikeways, providing bike paths within a maximum distance of one-half mile of every residence in Cerritos.

HUNTINGTON BEACH-Gahr’s baseball team was trying to do something it had not done at all this season-rally from a four-run deficit to win. But it was asking a little too much for that rally to happen in the final two innings, on the road and in the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division III semifinal game against another ranked team. The Gladiators were trailing the Seahawks 2-1 entering the bottom of the fifth this past Tuesday when the hosts pushed across three runs. Although Gahr answered back with a pair of runs in the sixth, so did Ocean View, which proceeded to eliminate the Gladiators 7-3. Gahr was attempting to reach the divisional finals for the third time in school history and first since 1994. Gahr had also reached the semifinals in 2006 and in 2002. Junior pitcher Jacob Faria, a winner of eight straight in his 12 previous starts of the season, breezed through the first inning but got tagged in the second when he gave up a lead-off double to Kevin Nance and a two-out home run to Nick Schulenburg. Faria would walk a pair of batters with two outs in the third and although they didn’t score, it would mark the end of Faria’s day. He would be replaced by junior Darian Dominguez in the fourth inning and for the second straight start, Faria was done before the fourth inning.

“Sometimes you have scouting reports and you think you’re going to go into a game with a certain approach and I think you have to adapt,” said Gahr head coach Gerardo Perez. “I think Jacob matched up pretty well; I don’t think he was at his best. I just thought it time to give [Ocean View] a different look.” In the top of the third, junior right fielder Alex Newman doubled to the left field gap and scored when senior catcher Alex Hernandez bounced a double over the third base bag. Those would be the first two hits Gahr got off of Blake Walker but there could have been more. Senior first baseman Daniel Lack was robbed of a hit by Matt Larsen, who made a sliding catch in center to begin the game. In the next inning, senior shortstop Josh Cabula sent a potential base hit deep in the hole that was snagged by Ocean View’s second baseman Colton Johnson. And in the fifth, freshman second baseman Edgar Morales was the victim of another stellar stop by Johnson. “That kept us from being able to try to orchestrate and manufacture some runs to keep it close later,” Perez said. Ocean View put the game away in the fifth when nine batters came to the pate and scored three runs, two of them earned, on just two hits. The big blow was a two-run chopper to left field from Blake Hitchcock. In the next inning, Lack was hit by a pitch and following a strikeout, senior designated hitter Michael Lugo smacked a home run to left center. But the Seahawks also crushed the ball in their half of the inning when Aaron Delgado had a base hit to center and came home on a double from Nance. While the Gladiators were limited to five hits, tied for the fewest this month, Newman had three of them and will be one of the leaders next season as Gahr loses its main six starters of the 10 seniors on the team. “I have a feeling he’s going to have some other things to worry about next year, like the draft,” Perez said. “When you get a kid that athletic…he’s really coming into his own late in the year. He put on three great swings and you can’t ask him to do anything more on this team.” The Gladiators, who began the playoffs not ranked among the top 10 in the division, faced three straight league champions in the postseason and outscored them 20-12. Gahr finishes the season at 20-11, its second straight 20-win season and fifth in the last seven. “I think their legacy is going to be left behind for years to come because of the work ethic and the time put in,” Perez said of the 2010 team. “I think they took Gahr, a small school with a good varsity program, and they elevated it to just a really good, strong program, period.”

CIF DIVISION V SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS

Valley Christian receives mediocre grade in quarterfinal loss By Loren Kopff It was a rare display of home run derby last Thursday when Valley Christian’s softball team hosted South Hills in a California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section Division V quarterfinal game. The only thing missing was one, or a few of those long balls coming off the bats of the Lady Crusaders. The sixth ranked Huskies belted three home runs, two of them of the three-run variety, and blasted V.C. 10-3 backed by a seven-run top of the seventh inning. The Lady Crusaders end their season at 18-9 and lost for the second time in the past 10 games. Following the game, V.C. head coach Rich Avila said his team needed to play an “A” game but instead played a “C” game. V.C. had rallied from a 3-0 first inning deficit to tie the game when a fielder’s choice from sophomore third baseman Brianna Dupuy brought in senior pinch runner Louisa Bakker in the bottom of the fifth. But South Hills sent 10 batters to plate in the seventh, clubbed five hits with two of them roundtrippers. The first was a two-out, three-run shot from Brittney Rodriguez over the left center fence. Four batters later, Sydney LaFollette smacked a two-run home run to dead center. “She battled and battled and did what she’s done all year,” Avila said of his senior pitcher Lina Avila. “She kept us in the game after she settled down [after the first inning].” The Huskies were staked to a 3-0 first inning lead following a three-run home run from Keira Powell. While the Lady Crusaders were putting runners on the bases, they couldn’t find a way to get through LaFollette until the bottom of the third. Sophomore designated player Hannah Prewitt led off the frame with an infield single. Two outs later and now standing at third, she came in on senior catcher Emily Craig’s single to right. In the next inning, freshman first baseman Madison Garcia led off with a base hit to right and scored on Prewitt’s second infield knock of the game. The third ranked Lady Crusaders were able to stay in the game because of the exceptional defensive play from senior center fielder Lexie Snyder. In the top of the third inning with the first two runners on base, she robbed Kristen Stewart of a home run when she crashed into the temporary outfield fence and caught the first out. Later in the inning, she would catch a fly ball from LaFollette, then throw a laser to Craig who tagged Rodriguez for

the final out. Snyder would have half a dozen put outs and the one assist. “Lexie Snyder, all year, has been doing the job for us,” Rich Avila said. “Our three seniors up the middle have done a phenomenal job for us-our catcher, our pitcher and our center fielder. That’s our leadership right there. They played not to lose today. We just came up short.” In the sixth inning, freshman right fielder Taylor Winters would double up Lexi Robles at first base on a fly ball from LaFollette to keep the game tied. Garcia and Prewitt would each have a pair of hits as V.C. was looking for its fourth come from behind victory of the season. “If you look at that team’s celebration, they were relieved that they won because they knew that they got away with one,” Rich Avila said. “We did not play our best game; they were the better team today. If we play them two more times, it’s a different story. You only get one shot in the CIF.” V.C. is expected to be among the top teams in the division next season as there will be one senior, who did not play this season due to an injury, nine juniors and three sophomores if everyone comes back in 2011.

Artesia Punishers 97 heading to Hoosier territory, qualify for 12-Under Nationals By Loren Kopff HEMET-It’s beginning to feel like the summer of 2008 all over again for Craig Cameron. It was then that he managed the Cerritos Girls Softball Association’s 10-Under Xtreme All-Star team to a 31-11-1 summer and fifth place finishes in both the Amateur Softball Association

‘B’ State Tournament and Western Nationals. Now, in just over half a year of the manager of the Artesia Punishers 97

12-Under travel ball team, Cameron and his team have earned a berth in the USA/ ASA “A” 12-Under National Championships to be held in Bloomington, IN Aug. 3-8. The Punishers 97 were one of 13 teams to have qualified from last weekend’s state tournament which was held at the Diamond Valley Lake Community Park. The team won its first three games to qualify before losing the next two in the double elimination tournament. “At first I didn’t know what to feel but after letting it set in right now, it kind of hit us,” Cameron said. “In September when we got together, this is what we imagined. This is what our goal was. We made it so they peaked at the right time.” The clinching game came this past Sunday afternoon against the San Diego Renegades. Pitcher Jennifer Iseri scattered four hits and helped herself out by crushing a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning as the Punishers 97 won 3-0. Iseri’s big hit also plated left fielder Ashley Hernandez, who had reached on a fielder’s choice. The third run came in the next inning as Hernandez doubled in pinch runner Brianna Betschel, a replacement for Heather Cameron who had doubled to left field. In fact, the team would get one more hit the rest of the game but Iseri already had more than enough to keep the Renegades in check. The Punishers 97 opened the tournament last Saturday with a 10-2 victory over the Irvine Sting behind Iseri’s eight strikeouts in four innings of action. She also went two for four with a triple while Amanda Akles went three for three and scored twice. Later in the day, the team knocked off the American Pastime 8-5 as Iseri struck out 10 and allowed half a dozen hits. Akles went two for three with a double, a home run, scored twice and drove in three runs. Lauren Van Steenwyk went two for two and scored twice while Monica Navarette also scored a pair of runs.

This past Monday morning, the Punishers 97 fell to the (San Diego) Power Surge 8-0 and were knocked out of the tournament by the California Cruisers

11-8. Still, the team was one of eight teams to have qualified from the winner’s bracket and finished in seventh out of 50 teams. This isn’t the first time the Punishers 97 has enjoyed success since Cameron took over. The team has five tournament championships, a third place finish and a fifth place finish to its resume in addition to the seventh place performance last weekend. Part of the success of the Punishers 97 has been a quintet of former CGSA All-Stars-Cameron, Iseri, Jenna Llamas, Leeann Tran and Katie Valladao-who have been together since they were 8-Under All-Stars. “They’ve played together since 8-Under’s so they’re already gelled,” Cameron said. “Everybody that came in just kind of added in to that. They all welcomed them in and each individual became a part of the team instantly. We’ve always preached it’s all about the team. It’s kind of like the perfect storm.” The rest of the Punishers 97 are: Amanda Flores, Alex Hernandez, and Sarah Parten. The coaching staff consists of Carlos Hernandez, Brian Iseri and Tommy Parten. The Artesia Punishers 98 team was also competing in the tournament but had different results than its counterparts. The Punishers 98 fell to the Power Surge, the defending 12-Under national champions, 8-4 last Saturday, then dropped a 6-1 decision to the Orange County Batbusters this past Sunday. Despite going two and out, all is not lost for the Punishers 98. The team has already qualified for the Triple Crown World Series to be held in Utah next month and the United States Specialty Sports Association World Series later in the summer. “It’s been interesting,” said Artesia Punishers 98 manager Dan Weekes. “We put the team together in December and putting it together with such a late start and qualifying for two World Series has been impressive. The girls have grown a lot faster than we thought. We’re a young team and we’ll be back next year with a lot of these same girls. We expect to compete for a National Championship next year.” The Punishers 98 grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a double from shortstop Ashlee Snyder, a wild pitch and a ground out from center fielder Lexi Nunes. The Batbusters would tie the game in the bottom of the first, take a 2-1 lead in the next inning and put the game out of reach with a three-run third. The Punishers 98 would get four more hits by different players the rest of the way. The rest of the Punishers 98 are: Ari Burns, Emily Cookes, Glorianna Eddy, Cheyanne Garcia, Melanie Okazaki, Jynelle Pangelinan, Jezabelle Quintana, Jaci Sanchez, Amanda Schultz, Kadey Tyler, Alexis Weeks and Tori White. Valley Christian Middle School Crusaders ended their 8 and 1 season with a win over Friends Christian School to become the 2010 Christian School League Softball Champions. Friends Christian who had handed Valley their only loss during the season, jumped out to a 2 run lead at the top of the first inning. However, the Crusaders did not allow Friends any additional runs during the remainder of the game and went on to an 8 to 2 victory. Valley’s pitcher Hannah Griffin threw a two hitter with five strike outs. The Crusaders turned a picture perfect double play in the third inning when Short Stop Emily Morrow fielded a sharply hit grounder, threw to 2nd Baseman Madison Wright for the 1st out and Wright hurled the ball to the 1st baseman Caroline Hefley to complete the double play. The Crusaders momentum was further fueled by Nicole Parker’s solo homerun in the 7th inning. Completing the Championship squad for Valley Christian were Reis Birkett, Kaitlyn Carr, Hailey Garcia, Ally Gilbreath, CariAnn Palmer, Rachel Reeves and Aminah Wright.
