Sport & Enrichment

Sport and enrichment activities are available to all students, regardless of gender, age or ability and provide students with opportunities to broaden their experiences and enhance their personal development. They usually take place on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Every student can enrol on more than one enrichment activity, the range and variety on offer means there is something for every individual. A College shouldn’t just be somewhere you come to get qualifications, but a place where you can enjoy yourself and develop interests and skills that can be continued for life.

Often universities and employers are interested in seeing whether applicants can show evidence of wider interests outside of their studies, so taking part in enrichment is perfect for demonstrating this. As well as improving your overall health and wellbeing, participation in enrichment activities can help develop team/leadership skills, introduce you to new friends and boost your confidence. Our aim is to ensure you get the most out of your time at College and also have some fun! Details can be found on the posters around College and on our TV display system. Don’t lose out - to find out more about taking part in the enrichment programme speak to Denis or Luke either at North Street or when they are visiting the other sites.

Volunteering Opportunities! Would you like to become a Student Sport Maker?

Here are some great reasons to become a Sport Maker:

Sport Makers, quite simply, make sport happen.

Play more of the sports you enjoy!

You can bring the inspiration, the support, the organisation or the skill to others. Your passion for sport makes the whole thing possible. You can make sport happen however you want for anyone aged 16+. Here are four suggestions for you to consider. It doesn’t matter if you choose one or all of these ways - they all count as long as you record your hours online.

Organise sport for your friends You provide the encouragement and organisation. You round up your friends to arrange something fun you can all do together, such as a bike ride.

Help out a local sports club or event You provide the support. You help a local club attract more members or help out at a local event. You have a skill that can be used to do this, you might marshal at a local race for charity.

Use your ability to help others You have the skill. You use your sporting knowledge to pass tips on to others, you might motivate your friends during fitness workouts.

Set up regular sessions and friendly competitions You are the leader. You set up and organise local sporting events, such as a 5-a-side football tournament at your local sports centre.

To find out how you can become a Student Sport Maker or Activator, speak to Luke Forgione (College Sport Maker) in the Student Union office or call 0113 222 6078. 6

This is your chance to keep active through sport and to help others get involved too.

It’s rewarding! Through Sport Makers, you can give something back to the community. By helping more people play sport, you’ll feel a great sense of achievement for your efforts.

Learn new skills and make new friends! With Sport Makers, you’ll learn lots of new skills that you can add to your CV, so it’s sure to help your career. We’ll hook you up with sporting organisations and clubs and you’ll meet other Sport Makers - some of whom may end up being friends for life! To find out how you can become a Student Sport Maker visit www.sportmakers.co.uk

Become a Student Sport Activator and boost your CV!!

We have a range of volunteering places in the sports programme, offering a great way to get more involved in your favourite sport and gain experience to add to your CV. As a Student Sport Activator you’ll help deliver the social sport sessions. It’s a rewarding and fun role - and in return we’ll help to fund sport-related training like UKCC Coaching Awards to develop your skills. Training will be offered during the October half term. You may also have the opportunity to become part of the Student Management team, where you will be able to make decisions in partnership with Luke Forgione on which sports are available to the students.

Competitions play a big role in student development at the College and we encourage students to participate in regional and national competitions. We feel taking part in these events allows students to showcase their skills, and for the winners, not only can they receive great prizes, it gives them a head start in their chosen career. Feedback from students who have taken part in the competitions is excellent, it’s given them the opportunity to compete at a high level, increased their confidence, allowed them to demonstrate their skills to potential employers and be extremely proud of what they have achieved. WorldSkills UK is the name for the UK’s premier set of skills competitions for young people and adults. The competitions aim to encourage people across the UK to excel in their work-based skill. They also aim to help lift standards of training and performance. The competitions run both regionally and nationally each year in the UK, promoting world class skills and international competitiveness. Outstanding WorldSkills UK National Finalists may be considered for potential inclusion in a shortlist for the team that goes on to represent the UK at a WorldSkills Competition. 8

The next WorldSkills competition takes place in São Paulo 2015. The SkillBuild competition is the largest multi-trade competition in the country for construction trainees and apprentices and covers areas such as carpentry, plastering and wall and floor tiling. SkillM&E consists of four skills competitions that search for the best mechanical and electrical engineers from the building services engineering sector and is run by Summit Skills. We also enter the Dulux Apprentice of the Year, Carpenters Craft Competition, Leeds Apprenticeship Awards, Building & Engineering Services Association Training Awards and many more. If you are interested in getting involved in any of these competitions or want to find out more information about competitions taking place in your chosen area of study, please contact your Course Tutor.
