Principal’s Welcome Dear Student If you are aged between 16 and 18 and want a successful career in construction, you’ve come to the right place, so please read on! There has never been a better time to join this exciting industry, with so many companies currently looking for talented people to join their workforce. We are the only specialist construction college in the UK and we recently opened Europe’s most advanced construction campus in Leeds, which means we really are the best in the business when it comes to construction. So, if you fancy a full-time or part-time course, or an apprenticeship where you earn while you learn, this is the right place for you. Some people want to learn a trade that will benefit them for the rest of their life, and others want to study for a professional level qualification so they can work as an architect, engineer or project manager and others do both!

Even if you’re unsure about the trade or career that’s right for you, our advisors can work out the best possible courses and careers that they think you will enjoy and do well at. How to Apply for a full-Time Course Follow these steps and build yourself a bright future! 1. Application

Apply for the course you want to study online, in person or by post. You can fill in the online school leaver application form or download a printable version at www.lcb.ac.uk/school-leavers/full-timeapplication.

You will receive a letter inviting you into the College to find out more about the course you want to study and make sure it’s right for you. This is also your opportunity to tell the College why you will make a great student as well as finding out everything you need to know about College life.

You can also apply on the UCAS Progress website – your school should be able to provide login details for this. We can help you with your application. Please call 0113 222 6002 to discuss it further or alternatively come into the College and a member of the Student Services team will be able to go through it with you.

If you pass the skills assessment, you will receive a letter confirming that you have been offered a place. We then meet your employer to ensure they meet the correct health and safety requirements.

All of our students over the age of 16 automatically become members of the National Union of Students and enjoy all the organisation’s benefits. The Students’ Union (SU) organises loads of social activities including sporting events, parties, outdoor pursuits and fundraising challenges as well as regular trips to Alton Towers, Go Ape, Pole Position Indoor Karting and paintballing. They also offer advice on college life, health and wellbeing as well as representing student opinions and views. You can have as much or as little involvement with the SU as you want. There are lots of ways to be a part of the work of the SU and if you really get into it, you might even choose to become the President, Vice President or Sports & Entertainment Officer.

Student Ambassadors Student Ambassadors represent and promote the College by attending key events and sharing their College experiences with people considering joining the College. This looks great on your CV and you are rewarded for your time.

Volunteering Opportunities We offer a huge range of opportunities for students to step out of their comfort zone and make a difference by volunteering in all types of areas like charities and sports clubs. Additional Learner Support Team

It’s important you feel safe, happy and get the most out of your time at College and this is where our Student Services team can help. All full-time students are allocated a Personal Adviser who will regularly meet with you, monitor your progress at College and help you wherever possible.

We are firmly committed to giving you all the support you need.

financial support If you are aged between 16 and 18, your course is free! Half Fare Bus Pass If you are aged between 16 and 18, you are eligible for a half fare bus pass, which can be used throughout West Yorkshire. For more information contact Student Services on 0113 222 6002.

The scheme is also open to young people in care, care leavers, young people receiving income support and disabled young people receiving both employment support allowance and disability living allowance. Bursary Fund

Free Meals

This fund helps anyone who is facing financial hardship to stay in full-time education.

Anyone who qualifies for the Bursary Fund is also entitled to a free meal each day at College.

If you need financial support to stay in education or training and have a household income of less than ÂŁ20,000 per year you can apply. Those most in need will be eligible for a bursary of up to ÂŁ1,200 per year to help with expenses such as transport, food, equipment and other course related costs.

Will there be any additional costs? On some courses you may require stationery, protective clothing, drawing equipment and optional educational visits. Discounts are available from local suppliers and our team can give you further details on this.

If you were disappointed with your GCSE results in English and mathematics or if better grades would help your career prospects, you can sit them again here at College. You can study for these at the same time as doing your course and we’ll give you all the help and support to achieve the GCSE grades you need. Another option is the ‘Functional Skills’ qualification in English, Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Having good English, mathematics and ICT skills are really important in both life and the construction industry when it comes to working out measurements, prices, quotes, interpreting site plans and communicating with customers.

What is a Higher Apprenticeship?

Our full-time courses all offer a high quality study programme that will give you the best chance of progressing into lasting employment or further training opportunities.

If you are aged 16 or over and feel ready to start work and earn a salary, but still want to learn and get qualifications, then an apprenticeship could be perfect for you.

If you have not achieved a GCSE grade C in English and mathematics, you can continue to study these subjects, at the same time as your course, in order to maximise your career options.

You will need an employer and in some cases we can help you with this, there are lots of vacancies listed on the National Apprenticeship Service’s website at www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship

Higher Apprenticeships work the same way as a traditional apprenticeship and combine a work based learning programme with a nationally recognised qualification but at a very high level, which is usually NVQ Level 4 or 5.

Throughout the course you will also be able to take part in our wide range of enrichment activities as well as valuable site visits and work experience, giving you even more opportunities to develop your skills.

Depending on the apprenticeship, you will attend College one day a week, or you might come on a block release basis, for between one and four weeks at a time. You then spend the rest of your time with your employer where you put your new skills into practice and gain great experience.

What are the entry requirements?

Full-time You must have achieved the Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery to commence the Level 3 Diploma in Bench Joinery.

What’s it all about?

Bench joiners are based in a workshop and produce timber products such as doors, window frames, staircases and cabinets. They use traditional woodworking tools as well as specialised power or hand tools for cutting, shaping, smoothing and finishing.

What skills and qualities do I need?

+ A careful, methodical and accurate approach to your work + The ability to follow drawings, plans and written or spoken instructions + A creative eye

How much could I earn?

Starting salary is approx. £12,000 and you could earn up to £30,000 a year.

What are my study options? + Full-time – Bench Joinery + Apprenticeship – Bench Joinery

Apprenticeship All applicants will be required to pass an assessment. You must have achieved the Level 2 NVQ Diploma to commence the Level 3 NVQ Diploma.

How long is the course?

What’s it all about?

Refrigeration and air conditioning engineers could work on one of two broad areas. Refrigeration engineers design, install and maintain cooling systems in places like supermarkets, restaurants, hospitals, food processing plants and factories. Air conditioning engineers install and service the systems that control air quality, temperature and humidity inside offices, schools, leisure complexes and other modern buildings.

Roofers work on new roofs, repair work and refurbishment (stripping old roofs off and replacing them with new roofs). This can be done using a variety of methods, from large format concrete tiles with a covering of 10 tiles per m² to small formats with a covering of 60 tiles per m². The work can range from a small repair to a house extension.

Wall & floor tilers lay tiles on the walls and floors of buildings including hospitals, shopping centres, swimming pools, industrial premises or bathrooms and kitchens. Tilers usually work with ceramic, porcelain and natural products including marble, granite, slate and terracotta. They also follow plans drawn up by an architect, builder or designer.

Wood machinists manufacture components used in the furniture and construction industries. Finished products may be sold to builders’ merchants, DIY stores or used by the furniture-making and construction industries. Common items that a wood machinist prepares from raw materials of timber include frames for doors and windows, floorboards and staircases, kitchen cabinets and cabinet furniture.
