BAMFORD CHAPEL MISSION/VISION STATEMENT

Worship In our devotion we will come together to express our joy, love and thanks through worship. We shall share our praise and dedicate it to God. Ministry Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit we will show compassion and love by understanding, supporting and meeting the spiritual, the physical and the emotional needs of others. Evangelism We are called as Christians to share the good news; living as examples of Christ in our everyday lives we can spread the word and love of Jesus. Discipleship We as a church have a responsibility as Christians to encourage people to know God and to enable them to develop their relationship with Him through prayer, discussion, study and learning. Fellowship We welcome to our church family those who want to belong. We show our love for others by sharing acts of fellowship in God’s name. 2

Message from the Manse I want to start by thanking everyone for what has been a busy time in the Church’s life. There is a lot going on at present with decisions being made about the Church roof work, the pew removal proposal that was accepted at the July Church Meeting and also discussions on the 2 nd Sunday morning service proposal. I want to remind people about the special meetings that have been set up to discuss both the idea of a 2nd Sunday morning service each week and also another set of meetings that will discuss ideas for “additional styles of worship.” The meetings to discuss the latter are for anyone but they were set up in light of comments made on the original vision questionnaires when several people mentioned wanting to see “additional styles of worship”. There was no suggestion as to what that meant to those who had stated it. There are two more meetings in September for anyone who has ideas about what might happen in an additional style (or styles) of worship. At present the second one is set for Sunday 7th September at 12pm). However this may change if our church meeting needs to be on this date. Watch out for news on this. The third one is on Thursday 18th September at 7.30pm in the Coffee Lounge. The fourth and final date for the meeting to ask questions about the proposed new 2 service structure is on Thursday 11 th September at 10.30am (if it is felt that another date needs to be set for this sort of meeting then we can arrange that). I believe strongly that God is working in this Church. We are, to some degree, in a season of trying new things and making some big decisions. The discussion and decision over the removal of pews has, I know, been hard for some people. I believe strongly and passionately that this will give much greater flexibility for worship and it also means that the chapel itself can be used for other events as well. These of course will be vetted and agreed by the Elders. I want to thank everyone for their openness and honesty at the church meeting that took this decision. At a recent Elders’ meeting it was decided that the notes of the Core 4

Group meetings should be made available to all those who are on the “additional helpers” lists. I will find it hard to locate each person on the additional helpers list to hand the notes out to. I plan to leave them out on the pool table in church and people are encouraged to get them off that table. They are not secret or confidential they are available to anyone who wants to see them. If copies run out please let me know and I can copy more. As our children and young people begin new classes in school or change school altogether, we too, as the church begin a new period in the Church’s life. As we embark upon new ideas and initiatives it is vital that together we discern what God wants from us as a church. It is vital that we remain as one people under the one God. Let’s pray together and discern together so that we can grow together as the people of God. I know there are concerns about the additional morning service proposal. On the one hand we have many who accept that doing nothing (re trying new styles of worship) is not an option to us. But there is equal concern about the “split” or “divide” in the church if we opted for a two service structure. There is still opportunity for discussion. There will be discussion at any church meeting. What is important is that people have their say and people’s views are heard. If you have views either for or against the idea now is the time to express them. Likewise if you know that on your original questionnaire you mentioned wanting to see “additional styles of worship” now is the time to express what your thoughts are on that. The Worship Core Group meet again later in September. There will be one service in September, October and November where we will experience what could be termed “contemporary” services. It is not a one size fits all when it comes to alternative/contemporary styles of worship. As I say above we are in an exciting time at Bamford Chapel and I hope together we can discern the mind of Christ as we journey on in faith.

Your Servant in Christ, Richard. 5

Thank you for all the love & concern shown to me during my sister Sylvia’s long illness. And also for the flowers and cards I received following her recent passing. Special thanks to Ruth & Richard for providing a listening ear. Love & prayers – Joan Warner Congratulations to Michael Lucas on his retirement after forty years of service to The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Michael was the founder of the Darlington centre for ABRSM exams and when he moved to Rochdale he became the organiser of exams taken at St George’s Church Hall, Oakenrod, Rochdale. Michael attended the annual lunch at The Hyde Park Hilton Hotel, London in July where he was presented with a ship’s clock in recognition of his long service as a convenor of thrice yearly exams. Bon Voyage to Stephen, Rebecca, Dylan & Reuben as they start their new life in Kuwait. With our love and best wishes for your future happiness, from the Peacocks, Wisemans and Gordons 6

News of the family Concerns are expressed for the following people: Gillian Galloway following her knee replacement operation, Geoff Ogden, Anne Fitton, Larraine Dorrington and family during Scarlett`s illness, Margaret Riley and family, Olive Brierley and the wider family and any other people who you may know about but who I have omitted to mention. Congratulations to Thomas and Rachel who were married at Bamford Chapel in August, please remember them in your prayers along with other couples who have been married during the summer. August is often a stressful time for our young people, as they wait for exam results and make decisions about the next stage of their lives. Please pray for all our young people, but especially those who have important decisions to make and who face major change during the next few weeks. Congratulations to Luciana Jeffries who is looking forward to taking up a place at the University of Lancaster to study Geography, following her excellent A Level results. Congratulations also to John Lapworth who has two photographs in the Springhill Hospice Calendar for 2015. Make sure you get your copy in good time!

Congratulations to Rebecca Baines for achieving her degree in Drama. She will be graduating on September 8th and will then be Miss Rebecca Baines BA (Hons)! 7

News from Rochdale foodbank In July we provided food for 310 clients (almost identical to June), giving out 3. 7 tonnes of food (worth £6200). We did however receive 4.5 tonnes in July, a temporary boost of around half of that total coming from our weekend collection at Tesco early in the month without which we would again have been spending heavily on our core requirements. However we need around £100,000 of food during a year to meet the need and it remains a source of wonder and amazement at the continuing generosity of Rochdale people - particularly the commitment of church goers to weekly giving both in food and money. We are also grateful for the cereal donated by Kellogg’s each month, and for the new partnership with Greggs the Bakers, who will be helping us with bread and rolls by the end of August.

The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. 8

WELCOME TO OUR COMMUNITY COFFEE MORNINGS EACH THURSDAY 10 - 12 noon

Meet Friends  Make New Friends  Have a chat 

Everyone Welcome

First day back It was the first day of school. As the Head made his rounds, he heard a terrible commotion coming from one of the classrooms. He rushed in and spotted one boy, taller than the others, who seemed to be making the most noise. He seized the lad, dragged him to the hall, and despite his protests, told him to wait there until he was excused. Returning to the classroom, the Head restored order and lectured the class about the importance of good behaviour. Now," he said," are there any questions?” "One girl stood up timidly. “Please sir," she asked, "May we have our teacher back?" "Where is exactly is your teacher?" "He's in the hall, sir." 9

A huge thank you from the Junior Church leaders for the offers of assistance with our young people over the Summer. The break was much appreciated by all the Junior Church leaders.

New appeal As many of you will know Gillian Galloway is taking an enforced break from Junior church whilst she recovers from her operation. If you would like to help with the primary group please let Louise Aspinall, Gillian James or Gillian Galloway know ASAP Thanks once again for your support. Promotion Sunday will take place on Sunday 7th September this year. This is when our young people progress from one group to another. Progression from Crèche to Primary normally takes place in the September following a child’s 3rd birthday. This is often varied according to the needs of the particular child. Some are ready to move up earlier than others and others are better waiting a little longer. If you are not sure whether your child should be moving up please discuss with the staff in the crèche and/or in the Primary who will be happy to advise. Progression from Primary to Middle is for our young people who are moving into Key Stage 2 at school. (Year 3) Progression from Middle to Top is for our young people who will be 12 in the coming school year ie those going to Secondary schools in Year 7. Our young people may decide they would rather stay in church when they leave school. However, we don’t impose a leaving age and many prefer to stay in Junior church until they complete year 12.

Home groups

The Discipleship core group have been discussing home groups. It was felt that they are a vital part of the church’s activities because the small group setting can encourage the formation and strengthening of friendships ,and the development of faith. To this end ,it has been decided to start an additional homegroup, the first meeting of which will be at

Tuesday 2nd September at 7.30 in the crèche. If you are interested in joining this new church on

group, please come to the meeting (and put your name on the list under the clock (outside crèche room). At this first meeting future plans for such a group will be discussed. In addition to this, Gillian Galloway will be starting an afternoon group on a Thursday, and the first meeting of this

Thursday 9th October at 2pm at the home of Gillian and Finlay. Lifts will be will be on

available. Please can people also sign up for this if hoping to attend. A list of the existing home groups/small groups can be found in the weekly newsletter/service sheet and on the notice boards in the coffee area.

Or put your name on the list under the clock. All welcome. 12

Howard’s Way (to retirement) On a sunny Saturday, 21 June three carfuls of Bamford Chapel folk travelled to Liverpool to share in a service to celebrate the ministry of Howard Sharp. The Bamford group included Shirley Sharp who is Howard’s step-mum. We gathered in the modern chapel of Hope University with its beautiful Cloud of Witnesses sculpture by Raphael Seitz. In the seventies and early eighties Howard and his wife Pam were members of Bamford Chapel together with their children Marianne and Tony. Despite having been brought up in the Anglican tradition, Howard candidated for the URC ministry from Bamford. In 1983 he took up his first pastorate in Pontypridd. 10 years later he became the minister of the Ecumenical Church in Winchester and then, in 2004, he became moderator of the Mersey Synod. The service to celebrate his ministry was led by Lawrence Moore (Director of The Windermere Centre) and the sermon was preached by Howard’s fellow moderator and friend, Richard Church. Howard received greetings from John Ellis (Moderator of URC General Assembly), Rt Revd Tom Williams (Auxiliary Bishop, Archdiocese of Liverpool), Revd Phil Jump (NW Baptist Association) and Rita Griffiths (URC Mersey Synod clerk). Actress and singer, Emma Dears gave a wonderful and moving rendition of “I don’t know how to love him” from Jesus Christ Superstar. It was great to see Howard and Pam again in good health (and young-looking!) He really appreciated that so many of us from Bamford had come to his celebration. We all wish him a happy retirement (playing golf, apparently) 14

Intercessors for Bamford Are there any people out there who pray/would like to pray regularly for Bamford Chapel (ie our members, the Vision Process, the needs of the people who live in the area) but can’t necessarily get to the Prayer Group on a Monday, but would like to be joined in a mailing list (phone, text, e mail) so that we can pray in a more coordinated fashion, share insights etc, and possibly, occasionally meet together. Or, in the words of Michael Harvey (who spoke to the church recently), Do you have a hunger that other people would be able to share in a love for Jesus –Do you dream that the Church will be filled to overflowing with people longing to know Him? If so, you are called to be an intercessor! So please can you give your details to Jane Baines – Tel 01706 662402, text 07941 820 976, Email jcrm.baines@ntlworld.com, or to Joan Warner. Or you can even sign up on a list under the clock in church! If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” 2 Chr 7 v14 “If two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in Heaven” Mathew 18 v19 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. Mathew 5 v 6

BAMFORD CHAPEL LADIES FELLOWSHIP September 2014 to August 2015

Welcome to the new exciting season of events organised by the committee of the fellowship. ALL ladies of the church are invited irrespective of age. Young and aging are very, very welcome. Please come along this year and see what fun can be had on the second Thursday of the month. It is hoped the new programme of events leaflet will be available at the meeting in September. Firstly and most importantly the date of the first meeting is actually the third Thursday of September as many members are away on holiday. Make a note in your diary Thursday 18th September is the date of the next meeting. 7.45pm in the schoolroom at Bamford Chapel. Admission this year has increased to £3.00. This is to cover the cost of guest speakers. As you will be aware, last year we had what we term “in house” speakers but in the coming year we hope to have a variety of outside people, who charge for their services, ask for expenses or request a donation to their charity. We hope you will understand the reason for this increase. Obviously we also have to recompense Bamford Chapel for the use of their premises and make a yearly donation on Gift Day towards the running of Chapel. Macmillan Coffee Morning will be held on Friday 26th September commencing at 10.00am until 12 Noon. Admission is £3.00. There will be the usual bring and buy stall, raffle, cake stall, paper games, tea, coffee, toasted fruit loaf and scones!! Please make this event known to your friends and, if possible, provide a cake for the stall. Last year this stall was rather low on supplies so let’s make this year’s stall a bumper one! Also raffle prizes would be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to make the coffee morning, please bring your donations to the meeting on 18th September. Three committee members are retiring this season. Joan Warner is stepping down after seven years running the fellowship and in her place [though not an easy one to fill at all] is ME. We no longer have a 16

named secretary. I will be responsible for making sure via committee members, speakers are booked each month and other arrangements are progressing. Each committee member has a role making it a concentrated team effort. Thank you to Joan for her valiant work as Ladies Fellowship secretary. Anne Newman has decided to relinquish her role as treasurer after three years. Thank you so much to Anne for fulfilling this role in a first class manner. Linda Kerford has offered to take on this job. Elizabeth Hazlehurst is also having a break from the committee. Elizabeth seems to have been involved forever. Thank you so much for all your help over many years. This year’s committee is:Chairperson Joyce Cooper Co-ordinator Lesley Sutton Treasurer Linda Kerford Committee members Pat Anderson/Lesley Hynes/Joan Lucas/Anne Newman/Margaret Riley/ Angela Smith If you have any queries regarding Ladies Fellowship, please speak to a committee member. Transport can be arranged for those of you who would like to come along but don’t have the means to do so. Also, we use the fellowship as a way of providing pastoral care to the ladies of our Chapel. Please come along in September. I guarantee an enjoyable time. LESLEY SUTTON [Co-ordinator]

The older one gets the more one finds the present must be enjoyed; it is a precious gift, comparable to a state of grace. Marie Curie 17

LADIES FELLOWSHIP OUTING TO YORKSHIRE Firstly thank you so much to Angela Smith for organising this wonderful summer outing and also to Anne Newman who took charge of the finances for the day. To begin – Thirty three ladies left Bamford Chapel Car Park at 9.15am on Thursday, 14th August travelling in a very comfortable OPTIONS coach initially to Saltaire, Bradford. By 10.00am we had arrived and the statutory cup of morning coffee started our visit off to a good start. What an amazing place is Saltaire named after Titus Salt and the River Aire. There is so much I could write about this fascinating village. Titus Salt rose from modest beginnings to become one of the country’s most successful industrialists. He was deeply religious and a firm believer in the benefits of education. Salt had the village built so that he could make fine wool fabrics using the most efficient methods available and provide a healthy environment for his workers. It took 25 years to complete and began with the building of the mill in 1851. Today the village is a WORLD HERITAGE SITE and well worth a visit. Saltaire can be visited by train [railway station there] or by road A650 and the A657 between Shipley and Saltaire roundabout. Salts Mill is now an art gallery, shopping and restaurant complex. People live and work in Saltaire so it continues to be an active place. Many of us wandered through Roberts Park enjoying an ice cream on the way whilst others explored in depth the Mill. For me the highlight of the visit was a tour of Saltaire United Reformed Church which had been organised by Angela. The church opens in the afternoon for visits but Angela arranged a special opening for us. The church is a splendid building; a monument to our Victorian forebears and the philanthropy of Sir Titus Salt. Saltaire United Reformed Church is truly one of the nation’s most precious 18

Victorian architectural gems. The church, built by Sir Titus Salt in 1859 is a unique example of Italianate religious architecture. It boasts many architecturally and historically important features and has been described as a classic “Cathedral of Congregationalism”. We departed from Saltaire at 1.30pm and travelled to Harrogate. By this time the weather had become glorious. Blue skies and pleasantly warm. So much to occupy us in this beautiful spa town. Some of us walked to Harlow Carr RHS Gardens; a walk which takes about 45 minutes. Others shopped and as it was such a lovely summer’s afternoon, many of us enjoyed ourselves in Valley Gardens which is an English Heritage, Grade II listed garden situated in regal Low Harrogate adjacent to a popular woodland known as The Pinewoods It includes beautiful historical buildings such as the Sun Pavilion and Colonnades which sit alongside a wide variety of shrub, flower and herbaceous beds. The final part of our journey was an evening meal at Skipton Golf Club which I can only describe as a “great place to eat.” The food was delicious. Service was excellent and during the course of the meal we could enjoy spectacular views across the Yorkshire Dales. What a perfect way to spend a Thursday amongst wonderful friends and exploring God’s wonderful landscape. LESLEY SUTTON

NEXT MAGAZINE Please note that future magazine will be produced by Linda Peacock as usual. Please can your articles for the October edition to be handed in or e-mailed to lm.peacock@hotmail.co.uk by Sunday 14th September. 19

Heritage Open Days: an outreach opportunity for our church Heritage Open Days take place nationwide in mid-September. The aim is to celebrate England’s rich architecture, history and culture by opening historic buildings that are usually private to the public for free or to make entrance free for buildings where there is usually a charge.

Especially in this year when we celebrate the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund in preserving our lovely building please make every effort to support this event and invite your friends and neighbours to visit. It’s a great outreach opportunity.

Saturday 13th September & Sunday 14th September 1 pm till 4 pm. Many thanks to all those who have helped to run this event in previous years. If you can help this year please speak to Louise Aspinall Many thanks

Bamford Chapel Midday Concerts 2014 – 2015 For this season, we have had to change the times of both lunch and concerts to make it more comfortable for the ladies who prepare food. A Mums and Toddlers Group occupies the preparation area until 11.30 each Tuesday, and it has sometimes been difficult for them to be away until the last minute. Lunch will therefore be available from 12.15 p.m. and concerts will begin at 1 p.m. and last until about 2. Our committee has felt obliged to increase the admission charge to the concerts to £3.50 to enable us to offer an appropriate fee to our artistes, all of whom, as past patrons will know, are worthy of the best reward we can manage. Here is the programme for the new season:

October 14

The Mike Manship Jazz Trio We are giving the ever-popular Chris Holmes a rest this year and bringing back the equally popular and versatile Mike! November 11 Anna Roza (flute) and Rebecca Mills (harp) December 9 Chetham’s School of Music This year the School is bringing middle school chamber groups January 13 Claire Lees (soprano) and Lies Braakmen (piano) February 10 Amy Roberts (oboe) and Philip Sharp (piano) March 10 David Williamson (cello) Our guests in November, January, February and March will all be appearing here for the first time. They all come to us warmly commended and we do sincerely ask you to support us and all our artistes by coming to all the concerts. Any profit we are able to make, principally from the sale of refreshments, goes into Chapel funds, but our principal aim is always to provide, once a month through the autumn and winter, a series of concerts of a high musical standard. Please do all you can to make the concerts widely known among your friends – a personal invitation is infinitely better than a poster in a window! Best of all – come yourself and bring a friend! 21

Orphan Hope: Bamford Chapel Project 2012 Please see below a recent email from Peter Foulds updating us all on the Charity’s continued work in India. Truly inspirational! India is going Great , we are seeing God move amazingly , The school is Great and the children and teachers are doing amazingly well, The work is by far a wonderful example of the Love of God Shared around the world amongst the children of the Kingdom of God, We were totally Blessed by the kindness and giving hearts of your fellowship and Community of people when we received such a wonderful gift from you all. There are changes taking place where God is directing us to meet new people who ...to be honest are some of the poorest people in the world. We are in the midst of building a community centre / living accommodation in a small village in Andhra Pradesh, this will become a medical centre, church meeting hall, widows and Orphans distribution centre and sleeping quarters for poor orphans etc. We are very excited about this pilot project, and should it be successful we will look to using it as a model for other poor villages. We have so much here in the west, and with our small giving and the hard work of the villagers we are able to team together for God to shine His light into many dark places and darkened hearts where Satan has imprisoned these poor people. If you ever feel led to raise money for Orphan Hope again, or would like me to send you more information for you to consider then I will gladly do this. We shall send a more updated and in depth report in the next few weeks, so until then let's Keep on Keeping the Faith Our God Is An Awesome God, Take care and God Bless Love in Jesus Peter x 22
