SOUND OFF

Q:

I’ve seen sports stories reporting that former KU player Thomas Robinson is expected to be chosen in the first few picks of Thursday’s NBA Draft. What kind of salary is Robinson expected to make?

A:

NBA rookie salaries are determined by a rookie salary cap for a four-year contract with the drafting team. If Robinson is drafted in the first five spots, as expected, he’ll be offered between about $3 million and $4 million per year, depending on where he’s selected, according to hoopsworld.com.

had to extricate the driver of the pickup truck. Connie L. Miller, a 54-year-old Oskaloosa resident, was the truck’s driver, according to Kansas Highway Patrol records, and was flown by air ambulance to KU Hospital. An update on Miller’s condition was unavailable Tuesday night. Edward Clare Jr., a 56-year-old Meriden resident, was headed south on K-237 when he failed to yield to Miller’s right-of-way as she drove east on U.S. 24, according to the report. Clare’s tractor hit Miller’s 2003 Dodge Ram near the front on the driver’s side. Clare wasn’t hurt, records show.

• Leavenworth County Sheriff’s officers Monday evening chased a man suspected of driving a motorcycle recklessly in Linwood in a parking lot during a Little League baseball game, said Undersheriff Ron Cranor, a sheriff’s spokesman. Cranor said officers after 7 p.m. Monday located the motorcycle and were told the driver was leaving the ball fields in a red Ford pickup truck. An officer stopped the truck near Third and Park streets, but the suspect jumped out of the passenger side of the vehicle and ran away. Cranor said the suspect led officers on three separate foot chases as deputies would lose sight of him and then discover him again later. Eventually the suspect jumped a fence behind the Linwood Library on Kansas Highway 32 and swam across Stranger Creek to a wooded area. Officers searched the wooded area extensively but did not find the suspect. Cranor said deputies believe he had a warrant for his arrest in Jefferson County related to a probation violation.

The street was also closed between Missouri and Louisiana streets as of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday but open again as of about an hour later. A 20-year-old Lawrence resident was driving north on Indiana, making a left turn onto Ninth, when she failed to yield and hit a white Scion, Lawrence police Sgt. Randy Roberts said. The northbound driver was in a gray Hyundai; Roberts didn’t know the age of the driver

who was hit, but he did say that she was a Lawrence woman. The driver who was hit was taken to the hospital with what were believed to be nonlife-threatening injuries. She was still there as of about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. After the Hyundai hit the Scion, the Scion hit a parked car and ended up on the Ninth Street sidewalk. Police continued to investigate Tuesday evening, and no citations had been issued, Roberts said.

FIRE CALLS • A small fire damaged the exterior of Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Curry’s home in Ottawa on Sunday afternoon, said Ottawa Fire Chief Jeff Carner. Carner said the fire in the 1600 block of South Chestnut Street occurred when embers from an outdoor smoker used for cooking spread to vegetation and eventually damaged the outside of the house. Carner said no one was displaced by the fire, which caused less than $10,000 in damage. • A contractor working in the 4300 block of Wimbledon Drive before 3 p.m. Tuesday struck a two-inch natural gas main line that caused two apartment units in the area to lose gas service, said Curt Floerchinger, a Black Hills Energy spokeswoman. Floerchinger said the street had to be closed down for part of Tuesday afternoon while technicians turned off the gas because of the incident. A Black Hills field resource center staffer was scheduled to return to the apartments later Tuesday to help turn gas service back on at the two residences.

The Journal-World does not print accounts of all police reports filed. The newspaper generally reports: • Burglaries, only with a loss of $1,000 or more, unless there are unusual circumstances. To protect victims, we generally don’t identify them by name. • The names and circumstances of people arrested, only after they are charged. • Assaults and batteries, only if major injuries are reported. • Holdups and robberies.
