7th-grader taken to K.C.-area hospital after fall during field trip By George Diepenbrock gdiepenbrock@ljworld.com

A Southwest Junior High School student was unconscious for a short time Friday morning after falling near the Clinton Lake dam, school and fire officials said. The student was alert and conscious once firefighters rescued her, but she was taken to a Kansas City-area hospital via helicopter ambulance as a precaution, said Division Chief Joe Hoelscher of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical. Julie Boyle, a Lawrence public schools spokeswoman, said the seventhgrade female student fell while on a walking field trip in southwestern Lawrence. School and Douglas County Sheriff’s officials said the girl tumbled down in a hilly area that faces south near the intersection of a bike path and East 900 Road. Boyle said the students

were taken by bus to the Youth Sports Complex southwest of Wakarusa Drive and the South Lawrence Trafficway. The students then walked along the bike path west toward the dam to search for rocks and fossils. She said that before the girl fell, several students and teachers were walking down that portion of the hill. Douglas County Undersheriff Steve Hornberger said the girl apparently tumbled an undetermined distance in the area near the spillway after she lost her footing. The girl was flown via a LifeStar helicopter ambulance to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., for treatment of her injuries, and her parents accompanied her, Boyle said. She was released from the hospital Friday night. “I was told she was alert and conscious at the scene,” Hornberger said. Hoelscher said a fire crew performed a “low-angle res-

cue” during which they tied a rope to a tree and pulled themselves down to the student to get her into the ambulance. He said the girl fell from a “steep slope” in the area that had been carved out for the spillway near the dam. Hoelscher said the hill has points that drop off from five feet to 15 feet, but crews were not sure how far the girl fell. “District administrators are at Southwest Junior High and (the fields) assisting school staff in supporting students,” Boyle said Friday afternoon. “Of course, our thoughts and concerns are with the injured student and her family. Southwest Junior High plans to continue its regular school day.” The school district also sent out an automated call about the incident to Southwest parents Friday. — Reporter George Diepenbrock can be reached at 832-7144. senior Alex Earles. “The pain of having heels on for four laps is nothing compared to what someone has to go through when it comes to domestic violence.” Zachary Clark, a KU junior, was slowly making his way around the track in red pumps. He estimated it was taking about 5 minutes per lap. “It’s unpleasant to say the least, but it’s worth it,” he said. Clark is a volunteer at The Willow Center. At first, he worked in the shelter and provided resources for victims. Now he helps raise awareness about the cause and center. He applauded the other men’s efforts.

“They put me to shame. I am by far the worst one here when it comes to walking in heels,” he said. “Shade Little is a beast. He’s very good at it.” Little is pictured wearing red heels in The Willow Center’s 2011 Red Shoe Calendar, and he just happens to be featured this month. “It’s all for a good cause,” he said. The Willow Center provides safe shelter, peer counseling, advocacy and other services to survivors of domestic violence in Douglas, Franklin and southern Jefferson counties. It serves about 1,500 survivors each year. — Health reporter Karrey Britt can be reached at 832-7190. Read her health blog at WellCommons.com, and follow her at Twitter.com.

Wearing red pumps, Shade Little, husband of Kansas University Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little, and Hank Booth, longtime Lawrence radio personality, made their way onto the track at Haskell Indian Nations University Stadium. They led Lawrence’s first “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: Red Shoe Walk” event Friday evening. The event, which also included a 5K run, was held to raise awareness about domestic violence and to support The Willow Domestic Violence Center in Lawrence. It was the center’s first major fundraiser in 34 years. About 100 people participated, and several hundred cheered them on. The mile-long walk drew about 30 participants, and the men who were brave enough to sport heels received the most attention. Five members of KU’s Delta Lambda Phi fraternity showed up in heels and made their way around the track. One toted a purse and a couple wore “Real Men Wear Heels” T-shirts. During their final lap, they said their toes were hurting and they learned how easily heels sink into the wet ground. “We are happy to wear heels for 20 minutes and help raise awareness,” said KU
