Add a little sparkle to holiday baking, breakfast, or cocktails with pretty
metallic glitter you can actually eat. By Nichole Aksamit and Natalie Mechem
Not that long ago, much of what glittered in food was either made of precious metals (silver or gold) or of something the FDA didn’t recommend putting in your mouth. Case in point: Those metallic BB-size balls known as silver dragées that you may recall from holiday cookies and wedding cakes of yore. (Yes, you were supposed to remove those before eating. Oops!) These days, there’s a whole host of edible glitters, sprinkles, dusts, sprays, and bedazzled food products made with FDAapproved shiny pigments (like mica-based pearlescence) that let you sprinkle a little stardust magic on foods without sidestepping safety. Try one of these and live your disco dreams with everything from breakfast to cakes to cocktails during the season of sparkle.
NESTLÉ TOLL HOUSE DISCO SEMI-SWEET MORSELS AND EDIBLE GLITTER MORSELS
Flakes of mica-based edible silver glitter adorn some of the semisweet chocolate chips in every bag of this groovy option from Nestlé. Try them with your favorite cookie dough, pancake batter, or s’mores for a sparkly twist. $2.50 for 5.5 oz. at walmart.com
WILTON EDIBLE GLITTER SPRAY
Spritz through a stencil onto cocktail glasses for your New Year’s toast. $11 for 0.35 oz. at wilton.com
How to be sure it’s edible
Check the label: By law, makers of edible glitters and dusts must list their ingredients on the label. Most also use the word “edible.” If the label doesn’t list ingredients and says only “nontoxic” or “for decorative purposes only,” don’t put it on your food.
