You can tell from the number of people who watch Eggheads and The Chase that everyone loves a general knowledge quiz. So here is your starter for ten. What connects the following famous people? Barry White, Stieg Larson (I mean the writer, not the chap off Top Gear), Jill Dando, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Sir Isaac Newton and President Lincoln? Unless you are Kevin from Eggheads you probably don’t know. So let me help you. The answer is that all of them died intestate (i.e. without having made a Will)! Barry White the soul singer who had been clinically obese for much of his adult life, left children, wives and girlfriends

fighting over his estate when he died in 2003 aged 58. Stieg Larsson, the author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, died without leaving a Will so his estate was inherited by his father, rather than his partner… and the same thing happened following Jill Dando’s murder. Jimi Hendrix’s family argued for years over his estate after the guitarist died intestate. Bob Marley had nine children by different women, including three with his wife. Despite his eight-month battle with cancer, which ended in his death at the age of 36 in 1981, he did not make a Will. Marley left an estimated 30 million dollars and dozens of claimants on his estate.


If only they had come to Foskett Marr Gadsby & Head LLP, all of these problems could have been avoided. (I am willing to excuse Sir Isaac Newton and President Lincoln as they died before our firm was established in the 1920s) And you don’t have to be famous to make the same mistake. It is a shocking statistic but some two thirds of the people who die in Britain every year do so without having made a Will – the equivalent of more than 1,300 every day. You may think to yourself, what does it matter as if I die the government will sort it out. And to a certain extent you would be right. There are strict rules for dividing up your estate when you die intestate. The problem is that the government might decide to give it to people who you would not necessarily have chosen. Those strange nephews and nieces who you never could abide might be the unwitting beneficiaries of your demise, whereas your long term partner might lose out altogether. Please don’t play Russian roulette with your estate.

So what should you do?
