The Laureus World Sports Academy is a unique collection of the greatest living sports legends. All believe passionately in the power of sport to make a difference to our world. The Academy Members vote for the winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards each year and volunteer their time to support the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

The year 2015 will be remembered as the moment Laureus fully embraced China. The Laureus World Sports Awards in Shanghai proved exhilarating. It was a massively successful event, which you can read about in this issue of the Laureus Magazine. Respected Olympic gymnastics champion Li Xiaopeng, now of course a Laureus World Sports Academy Member, told me in Shanghai: “Our visit is really emotional. It certainly means a lot to me that Laureus is here.” But this is just one element of an ambitious programme for Laureus in China. Over the next few years, with the support of Mercedes-Benz, our Global Partner, Laureus will target the improvement of the quality of physical education across the country, training over 1,000 coaches and reaching out to as many as 150,000 young people. For myself and my fellow members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, our work for Laureus is the most rewarding part of our lives. But of course, none of this would be possible without the help of our project leaders and volunteers around the world and the invaluable support of our Founding Patrons, Richemont and Daimler, and Global Partners, Mercedes-Benz and IWC Schaffhausen. I thank them all most sincerely. The Laureus Family includes some of the greatest sports legends of all time – Tony Hawk, Nadia Comaneci, Nico Rosberg, Sean Fitzpatrick, Missy Franklin and Bryan Habana to name a few. You can read what they and many others have to say inside the magazine. I hope you enjoy it.

‘The world today looks very different to how it did some years ago. Women around the world have gained more control over their destinies. It is my hope that the pace of change continues to happen so that one day the IOC can be chaired by a woman.’ Nawal El Moutawakel LAUREUS ACADEMY MEMBER

A CHANGING WORLD FOR

WOMEN BY NAWAL EL MOUTAWAKEL

Laureus World Sports Academy Member Nawal El Moutawakel was the first Moroccan, African and Muslim woman to win an Olympic gold medal, in the 400 metres hurdles in Los Angeles in 1984. She is a Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee and is Chairman of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games Co-ordination Committee. She is a passionate campaigner for women’s rights. Women have participated in the Olympic Games since 1900, often in defiance of gender norms. All of them became powerful role models for the next generation. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is committed to gender equality and encourages the promotion of women in sport at all levels and in all structures. Today, women account for more than 40% of Games participants, and the IOC is committed to achieving parity. With the addition of women’s boxing to the Olympic Programme at the 2012 London Games, women now compete in every sport at the Summer Games. The London Games also saw the first participation by women from Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Qatar, ensuring that all 204 National Olympic Committees have included women in their delegations. Olympic Agenda 2020 includes a commitment by the IOC to work with International Sports Federations to achieve 50% female participation in the Olympic Games.

LAUREUS ACADEMY MEMBER NAWAL EL MOUTAWAKEL DURING HER VISIT TO COURIR POUR LA VIE BACK IN 2007

This is why with all the organisations I work with including Laureus, I try my best with my fellow female Academy Members – Nadia Comaneci, Katarina Witt, Martina Navratilova and Tanni Grey-Thompson – to show that sport is a human right. We feel there are still far too many women in this world who are denied access to sport. Through community-based programmes, we try to empower women and girls by practising sport at the grassroots level. In my case, I launched a few years ago “Courir pour la Vie - the Casablanca Women’s Race”, supported by Laureus. This project was a way for women in Morocco to express themselves by taking part in a mass 10km event of 30,000 participants. It was my dream and it’s great today to see that in every small remote town and city in Morocco and elsewhere, girls and women are enjoying full participation in physical activities and sport. This is fantastic and a growing sign of the positive change of gender empowerment in society today. Will there be a woman president of the IOC one day? The world today looks very different to how it did some years ago. Women around the world have gained more control over their destinies. It is my hope that the pace of change continues to happen so that one day the IOC can be chaired by a woman.

FROM THE BERNABÉU TO THE BRONX The Bronx, one of New York’s most iconic neighbourhoods, has seen it all, but this had to be a first. Even the famous yellow cab drivers were taking a second glance through the fences of the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center as one of the greatest footballers of all time was being taught a martial arts lesson by a local 12-year-old girl. Raúl González Blanco, universally known as Raúl, became a Laureus Ambassador last year and decided to pay the boys and girls of Laureus USA-supported project ‘Fight Back’ a visit. The Real Madrid legend witnessed first-hand how ‘Fight Back’ uses martial arts to boost the confidence and self-esteem of these young people, whose lives have not always been easy on the dangerous streets of The Bronx. “I was very impressed with the discipline that these kids have which you need for martial arts. This really is the way to change lives and make a difference. It was a very emotional day for me,” reflected Raúl, who scored 323 goals in his 16-year career at Real Madrid, and played more than 100 times for Spain.

There are not many occasions in life when you can really say that you were in at the beginning of something special. I was, in 2000, when the Laureus World Sports Academy was formed and I was invited to become one of the 30 founder members. Now, more than 15 years on, Laureus has grown dramatically and is doing more good around the world than we probably ever dreamed possible in those early days. Laureus began in Monaco, but over the years the Awards Ceremony has brought the Laureus message to many different cities, most recently Shanghai. But wherever we are in the world, the fundamentals of what we do have never changed.

‘I am always overwhelmed by the love and the passion of the children that I meet through Laureus and Special Olympics.’ NADIA COMANECI LAUREUS ACADEMY MEMBER

11

I have always believed that sport can bridge the gaps in society and change the way people look at the world and themselves. I am not sure who said, “If you can play sport together, you can live together,” but they were right. I am interested in everything that Laureus does, but I have to confess my real passion is for Special Olympics, the organisation which works with people with intellectual disabilities to create a world of inclusion, where every single person is accepted and welcomed. I remember visiting a Special Olympics school in Shanghai on behalf of Laureus as long ago as 2003, and so it was really exciting during the Laureus World Sports Awards this year to go and see Special Olympic youngsters trying out skating on an ice rink in the city and see that Laureus’ support for these incredible children is as strong as ever 12 years on. I am always overwhelmed by the love and the passion of the children that I meet through Laureus and Special Olympics. Sport has totally changed their lives and given them so much more to live for. That’s what Laureus means to me and why I am so passionate about doing what I can to help.

Shanghai is one of China’s most iconic travel destinations and one of the most spectacular cities on Earth, and it proved to be a breathtaking location for the 16th Laureus World Sports Awards. It was no surprise there was a real Chinese flavour to the Awards Ceremony, held in the iconic Shanghai Grand Theatre. Two of China’s greatest legends were honoured with special Awards: retired star Li Na, who has fostered a dramatic growth of tennis in China, was given the Laureus Academy Exceptional Achievement Award, while basketball giant Yao Ming received the Laureus Spirit of Sport Award. Li Na said: “I think the Laureus Award is the highest ever, so I am really happy. I think it’s very good that Laureus can come to China and can show all the Chinese about the highest level of sport in the world.” The globally televised Awards Ceremony was hosted by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch and among the presenters were Hollywood legend Bill Murray, star of Groundhog Day and Lost in Translation, and Henry Cavill, who played Superman in Man of Steel.

AWARDS HOST BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH

Serbia’s own Superman, Novak Djokovic, won his second Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award after another brilliant 12 months which featured a second Wimbledon victory. He said: “This is probably the crown of my 2014 season.” The German Football Team was named Laureus World Team of the Year after becoming the first European side to win the FIFA World Cup in South America, while Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo was winner of the Laureus Breakthrough Award after a brilliant rookie season in which he won three Formula One Grands Prix.

For 400 high school students in Shanghai, it was a day they could hardly believe, and certainly one they will never forget. World-famous coach Fabio Capello led international football legends Ruud Gullit, Carles Puyol and Louis Saha, along with China’s Sun Wen, voted the best women’s footballer of the 20th Century, to the Datong Middle School for a special coaching clinic on the eve of the Laureus World Sports Awards Ceremony.

The students came from the Shanghai School Football League, and Laureus Ambassador and current Russian national team coach Capello said: “Football has given all of us so much to be thankful for. It’s an honour to give something back through Laureus and hopefully inspire the next generation here in China.” In a busy Laureus Sport for Good programme in Shanghai, three Laureus sporting legends took to the ice to help develop the next generation of Special Olympic athletes. Academy Members Yang Yang, Nadia Comaneci and Franz Klammer visited the Feiyang Skating Centre to mark another milestone in Laureus’ 11-year involvement with the Special Olympic movement. Speed skater Yang Yang, China’s first ever Winter Olympics champion, said: “Laureus has a rich history of working hand in hand with Special Olympics around the world, and I’m delighted to support the organisation here in my home country.” Laureus’ activity in China is likely to increase over the next few years as a result of a partnership with Mercedes-Benz that will establish the Laureus Sport for Good China Fund. This will target the improvement of physical education across the country, as well as the development of new projects by training over 1,000 coaches and reaching out to as many as 150,000 young people.

SMILE ‘When I arrived in Afghanistan with a few skateboards, I didn’t dream of what we’ve achieved so far with Skateistan, but I’ve learnt that with a little persistence and belief in what you do, then the powers of sport to change the world hold no bounds.’ Oliver Percovich LAUREUS SPORT FOR GOOD AWARD WINNER 2015

Through hard work and dedication, Skateistan, now supported by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, built an indoor skate park in Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif, which now stand as the two largest sporting facilities in Kabul. The organisation has also funded construction of an indoor skate park in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Skateistan gives thousands of young people access to a back-to-school programme, which gives students who may have fallen out of education, the chance to catch up with their studies. In a country where girls are unable to ride bikes, 40% of Skateistan’s students are girls. Percovich said: “When I arrived in Afghanistan with a few skateboards, I didn’t dream of what we’ve achieved so far with Skateistan, but I’ve learnt that with a little persistence and belief in what you do, then the powers of sport to change the world hold no bounds.” Tony Hawk said: “There is no doubt that for a young person who needs help, the most important thing is to find someone who they can look up to, a role model who can give them direction and who they can respect. For the young boys and girls in Skateistan, as in all Laureus projects, as likely as not, this ends up being your coach. You just cannot underestimate the value of that personal support. “Whenever Oliver went to the old water fountain, local kids would flock to watch him, and beg to try it for themselves. He soon began bringing extra boards for them to share. As he managed to teach a few of them the basics of rolling, balancing and navigating the curves of the fountain (all through gestures and smiles, of course, since he didn’t speak their language and they didn’t speak his), some locals emerged as natural leaders in this new skate crew. “Ollie appointed them as instructors and Skateistan was born. In the past seven years, I’ve been amazed by the stories and the growth of Skateistan,” said Hawk. For the past seven years, Skateistan has given youngsters in troubled environments a chance for a better life through skateboarding. Laureus World Sports Academy Member Tony Hawk, the best-known skateboarder on the planet, said: “I can’t think of another organisation that has so effectively harnessed the power of skateboarding to engage young people and help them learn such valuable lessons.” The fact that this is all happening, not in New York, London or Hong Kong, but in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, makes you sit up and take notice. With these credentials, it is not surprising that Skateistan was a hugely popular winner of the Laureus Sport for Good Award in Shanghai.

19

The Skateistan organisation was created when Australian Oliver Percovich first visited Kabul in February 2007 carrying a few items of clothing, a couple of skateboards and little else. In his early days in the city, Percovich used an old water fountain to practise, catching the eye of young Afghans in the process.

‘I’ve been in South Africa for six years. I came initially to work on a vineyard but started surfing with kids from the Masi Township. I formed quite tight bonds with the kids and we were introduced to Laureus who came in with some funding, and we’ve just gone from strength to strength since then.’ Tim Conibear

Tim Conibear, founder of the Laureus-supported Waves for Change initiative, which uses the sport of surfing to provide therapeutic benefits to young adults in some of Cape Town’s most unstable communities, has been awarded a prestigious Ashoka Fellowship. Ashoka Fellows are leading social entrepreneurs who we recognise to have innovative solutions to social problems and the potential to change patterns across society. Tim joins the fellowship, which works in over 70 countries around the world in every area of human need. Tim, who arrived in Cape Town in 2009 to work on a vineyard, started surfing with local kids from the Masiphumelele Township and decided to start an initiative to try to counter the difficult experiences they were dealing with in their personal lives. Speaking at a Waves for Change project visit to celebrate Freedom Day at Muizenberg beach in Cape Town, Tim said: “It’s amazing, the Ashoka Fellowship is a network of Global Change Makers looking at new ways of addressing social issues, so we’re looking at childhood trauma and the social effects of that on the healthcare system. We know that outdoor sports and surfing naturally help kids create a new self-concept which is the main thing damaged through trauma.” As well as this recognition, the Waves for Change programme is also now benefiting from the support of global charity Comic Relief. This is the third Laureus-supported project at present to have the backing of Comic Relief, with South American projects Bola Pra Frente and Gol de Letra currently supported through Laureus. Tim, 33, from Oxford in England, has grown the organisation working with a small group of young people, to a large number of coaches from the Masiphumelele Township working on the initiative. Discussing Comic Relief’s support for the project, Laureus South Africa Chairman Morné du Plessis said: “Having this additional backing from an organisation of Comic Relief’s stature is a huge boost for the team at Waves for Change. The work of this project is at the heart of the mission of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, and this additional support will ensure that Tim and his team can continue to help youngsters from communities who need it most.”

Support for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is Mercedes-Benz’s most important corporate social responsibility activity, embracing all its markets worldwide. Ever since the Laureus Foundation was established in 1999, Global Partner Mercedes-Benz has promoted the aims and values of the non-profit-making organisation, which seeks to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young adults through the use of community sports projects in 35 countries. To show the strength of its commitment to Laureus, each member of the Daimler Board of Management is now to become the individual patron of a project around the world. “This will further improve our global involvement in the future, and we can strengthen the ties that connect the Foundation and Mercedes-Benz, bringing us even closer together”, says Ola Källenius, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales. As part of this innovative project, Board Member Dr Christine Hohmann-Dennhardt in June visited the Granja Andar project in Argentina, which works to improve the social inclusion of young people with disabilities.

23

Laureus Academy Member Hugo Porta, President of the Fundación Laureus Argentina, said: “We were delighted to welcome Dr Hohmann-Dennhardt. Mercedes-Benz have been great supporters of Laureus in Argentina for many years, and it was valuable to have her insight and her support.” Mercedes-Benz’s support for Laureus during the year included many fundraising initiatives. An additional 250,000 euros was donated thanks to the remarkable SLS AMG GT3 car, which has won 193 races to date. An AMG customer purchased the 100th model of the legendary car, a Laureus special edition, with a significant bonus donation, and he received it on the red carpet at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Shanghai from Laureus Academy Member and Formula One legend Mika Hakkinen. Among the social activations that have taken place, Laureus Ambassador Gary Paffett, the highly successful Mercedes-AMG DTM driver, showed a group of young people from the Laureus Kick on Ice project, and his fellow Laureus Ambassador, boxer Axel Schulz, around his team’s garage at the Lausitzring race track. Gary answered questions about his car from the youngsters, who were then able to watch the race from the grandstand and enjoy an amazing inspirational experience.

GORIS VERBURG, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN NORTH EAST ASIA, WITH LAUREUS CHAIRMAN EDWIN MOSES AND ACADEMY MEMBER LI XIAOPENG UNVEILING THE NEW LAUREUS SPORT FOR GOOD WATCH DURING THE AWARDS

The Laureus World Sports Awards in Shanghai honoured the great sporting achievements of the year, but also celebrated a remarkable ten-year partnership between Laureus and IWC Schaffhausen which has brought together countless young people around the world. The IWC event at the world-famous Shanghai Grand Theatre saw the unveiling of a new classic IWC timepiece dedicated to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Since 2006, IWC Schaffhausen has launched several limited edition watches in honour of the Laureus Foundation. Each edition features an exclusive engraving on the case back that is based on the winning entry in a drawing competition organised by IWC for children involved in Laureus projects on six continents. Edwin Moses, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, and Academy Member Li Xiaopeng, the hugely popular Chinese Olympic gymnast, joined Goris Verburg, Managing Director of IWC Schaffhausen North East Asia, in Shanghai to reveal the spectacular new Ingenieur Automatic Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” timepiece to the world’s media.

Praising the ten-year-long partnership between IWC and Laureus, Goris Verburg said: “The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is proof that by joining forces we can achieve an enormous amount. We as a company are very proud to support and advance this global social commitment.” Later, during a media event at the Four Seasons Hotel, Oliver Bierhoff, IWC Brand Ambassador and Manager of the German national football team, which won the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2015 Laureus World Team of the Year Award, joined Moses and Laureus Academy Member Michael Johnson to discuss IWC’s partnership with Laureus and their commitment to the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The winning motif for this year’s engraving on the Ingenieur Automatic Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” was submitted by 13-year-old Nakayenga Zahara from Uganda. Her enthusiasm for sport shows in the drawing of a group of happy cheerleaders with pom-poms, celebrating a goal. Nakayenga grew up in the impoverished district of Nakulabye close to the capital of Kampala. The area is severely affected by HIV/AIDS, and many of those infected are children. The Community Based AIDS Programme (COBAP) is located here and offers healthcare, rehabilitation and protection to people affected by HIV/AIDS.

These children, thanks to financing from the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, now have access to sports such as athletics, boxing, table tennis, volleyball and cycling. COBAP employees organise sports events and then use the halftime breaks to educate people about HIV/AIDS. Since the project’s inception, the rate of HIV infection has slowed and drug abuse amongst young people is steadily declining.

MISSY FRANKLIN

INSPIRES She may be one of the biggest names in global swimming, competing in races around the world, but Laureus Ambassador Missy Franklin took time out of her schedule to meet and inspire youngsters from the Laureussupported Foundation of Goodness project in Sri Lanka.

29

Ten years on from English cricket legend and Laureus Academy Member Sir Ian Botham’s visit to the project, Missy spent time with members of the community who were most impacted by the tsunami which devastated the village of Seenigama in December 2004. The Foundation of Goodness was set up by Kushil Gunasekera in 1999, to provide essential services to the southern Sri Lankan village of Seenigama and aid the development of the local community. The objectives of the organisation changed dramatically following the tsunami when, with the support of Laureus, the Foundation of Goodness developed the Seenigama Sport for Life Project to help rebuild the community. After learning about the Foundation of Goodness project and meeting the inspirational people involved, the fourtime London 2012 Olympic gold medallist reflected on her time in Sri Lanka. “I’ve been so inspired by the people I’ve met and the things I’ve seen here in Seenigama,” said Missy. “The Foundation of Goodness is a true embodiment of the Laureus message that sport has the power to change the world.

“I’ve grown up knowing the importance of hard work and resilience in preparing to compete at the highest level in sport, but the resilience of these people, who suffered such loss and grief after the devastating tsunami in 2004, is so inspirational for me.” Kushil Gunasekera, founder of Foundation of Goodness, said: “Our aim has been to bridge the gap between the urban and the rural sectors to provide the kind of opportunities that disadvantaged communities in rural areas are experiencing, and we try to provide that kind of basic opportunities, training and exposure for youth and women.” “To have somebody like Missy Franklin visit our village is absolutely unbelievable, and to see her teaching kids in the pool that we have built is something magical.” Today, post-tsunami, the focus at the Foundation of Goodness is on a long-term commitment to community development and social change through sport. Working with over 1,400 young people, the project combines sports training in cricket, volleyball, swimming, netball and badminton with programmes that build life-skills such as leadership, confidence and communication. Missy left Seenigama feeling humbled and inspired by the people she met and the things she saw at the Foundation of Goodness, saying “I won’t forget the smiling faces of the young children here.” Judging by the impact Missy had on the youngsters from the project during her visit, you can be sure the feeling was mutual.

Over the past six months, events taking place across Europe have supported the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the work it does using sport as a tool for social change around the world. From the biggest names in football showing their support at the inaugural #KickOffForGood match, the most wellknown polo players playing their part in the King Power Polo Cup and the stars of motor racing backing the Italian Foundation at their Formula One Charity Night. In September, the greatest footballers took to the field to support the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation The Netherlands in a Laureus All Stars v Real Madrid Legends fixture at the AFAS Stadion in Alkmaar. Laureus Ambassadors Luis Figo and Edwin van der Sar were joined by Laureus Trustee Clarence Seedorf and global football stars such as Thierry Henry, Cafu, Edgar Davids and Hakan Sükür. The entertaining match was watched by over 10,000 fans. An early goal from Laureus Ambassador Luis Figo put the Real Madrid Legends in front, however Dutchman Edgar Davids scored two extraordinary goals, giving the Laureus All Stars a 2-1 lead at the break.

LEWIS HAMILTON AT THE LAUREUS F1 CHARITY NIGHT

A second-half goal surge, which included a hat-trick from Rubén de la Red, put Madrid in the lead but it didn’t take the All Stars long to respond. The famous flair of Frenchman Thierry Henry, who found the net alongside teammates Pierre van Hooijdonk and Alkan, made sure the Laureus All Stars lifted the trophy at the inaugural #KickOffForGood charity match. The match was refereed by respected English referee Howard Webb, who famously took charge of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final in South Africa between Spain and The Netherlands. Meanwhile, MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS stars Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who is also a Laureus Ambassador, were guests of honour at the Laureus Formula One Charity Night in Milan.

Laureus World Sports Academy Members may come in different shapes and sizes, but there is no doubting they are all giants of sport. This was never truer than in Shanghai in April when Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar (5ft 5ins, 1.65 metres) and Chinese basketball star Yao Ming (7ft 6ins, 2.29 metres) were both inducted into the Laureus Academy. Laureus Chairman Edwin Moses chose to describe them as “illustrious sporting legends”. Sachin Tendulkar (shoe size 8) retired from cricket in 2013 after scoring a world record 15,921 runs for India in Test matches and 18,426 in One Day Internationals. He is the only man to score 100 centuries in international cricket. Yao Ming (shoe size 18), winner of the Laureus Newcomer of the Year Award in 2003 in recognition of his impact on US basketball in the NBA for Houston Rockets, is a sporting icon in China. Moses said: “They now become the 51st and 52nd members of the Laureus Academy and we are delighted to welcome them. Sachin is one of the greatest cricketers of all time and Yao Ming is one of those people who shows a greater commitment to society than simply what happens in the sports hall. India and China are great nations, with massive economic potential. They will inevitably become the sporting power houses of the next generation, so it is good that these two caring individuals have made this commitment to join us.”

Laureus is totally neutral when it comes to a sporting contest. May the best man, woman or team win. However, this year, for perfectly understandable reasons, there have been one or two quiet smiles of satisfaction every time MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS driver Nico Rosberg has hit the front in his car in the Formula One World Championship. For every kilometre that Laureus Ambassador Nico leads a Grand Prix, his team makes a €100 donation to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. This initiative – #DriveForGood – has also seen prominent branding featuring on his overalls. With two more races to go, Nico has raised over €100,000. Nico said: “Laureus is a cause that is very close to my heart and I am very proud to work as an Ambassador. It’s a source of great inspiration for me to see the fantastic work that the Foundation is doing for children round the world. Sport and competition taught me a lot about hard work, determination and respect when I was growing up, so hopefully I can demonstrate that and maybe provide a bit of inspiration of my own. “The #DriveForGood campaign is a wonderful next step as it combines my determination to lead as many laps as possible in every race with a good cause. Thank you to Mercedes-Benz for their generosity in supporting the Foundation in this way. Hopefully I will cost the company a lot of money in donations this year.” To mark the staging of the Laureus World Sports Awards in Shanghai, the Mercedes F1 W06 Hybrid also carried Laureus branding on the rear wing, main plane and cockpit sides of both cars in the Chinese Grand Prix. Edwin Moses, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, said: “I am delighted that our Ambassador Nico Rosberg and Global Partners Mercedes-Benz combine their passion for their sport with their passion for Laureus. We are all keeping our fingers crossed for every Grand Prix now that we know Nico is racing for all underprivileged children helped by Laureus.”

It is one of the most iconic running routes in the world, taking in London’s Hyde Park Corner, St James’s Palace, Trafalgar Square, St Paul’s Cathedral and finishing on Whitehall, just a quick sprint away from the world’s most famous clock, Big Ben, at the British Houses of Parliament. The weather in July was damp, but spirits were high as 30,000 runners took to the historic streets of Central London, which were closed to traffic, to compete in the Vitality Series British 10k race.

‘This was the passionate, caring face of sport at its best. I thank the runners who were supporting Laureus and raising significant sums of money, but I also congratulate all those running for a wide range of charities.’ SEBASTIAN COE LAUREUS ACADEMY MEMBER

Laureus is the Official Charity Partner of the Vitality Series and among those taking part was a group of 50 runners from Mercedes-Benz UK, each donating £200, raised from sponsorship, to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation as part of their challenge. Between them, on the day, the runners also managed to raise an additional £2,000. Youngsters from the Laureus-supported project Urban Stars also participated in the race, many of whom were taking part in a large-scale run of this nature for the first time, plus a group of women, supporting the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and #ThisGirlCan, raising awareness and funds to encourage young women around the world to participate in sport. Laureus World Sports Academy Member Lord Sebastian Coe said: “This was the passionate, caring face of sport at its best. I thank the runners who were supporting Laureus and raising significant sums of money, but I also congratulate all those running for a wide range of charities.”

LAUREUS ACADEMY MEMBER SEAN FITZPATRICK DURING AN ACTIVITY SESSION WITH YOUNGSTERS FROM THE LAUREUS-SUPPORTED ACTIVE COMMUNITIES NETWORK

‘These young people are the real heroes of our sport. Speaking with the youngsters, hearing how they have used rugby as a tool for change in their life, it’s inspirational and it’s what Laureus is all about.’ Bryan Habana

In the build-up to the biggest rugby event on the planet, Laureus Ambassadors and Academy Members from the world of rugby have been spreading one message far and wide: sport has the power to change the world. In South Africa, as the Springboks were preparing for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Ambassadors Bryan Habana and Schalk Brits, along with a number of their Springbok teammates, visited the Laureus-supported Vuka Rugby programme in Cape Town’s Masiphumelele Township. Habana, a hero to the young aspiring rugby players of the Vuka Project, spoke with them and took part in part of their training session, which integrates rugby skills with life lessons which can be used off the pitch. Speaking afterwards, Habana said: “These young people are the real heroes of our sport. Speaking with the youngsters, hearing how they have used rugby as a tool for change in their life, it’s inspirational and it’s what Laureus is all about.” On the other side of the world, and at the epicentre of the Rugby World Cup, Laureus Academy Members and legends of the rugby world Sean Fitzpatrick, Morné du Plessis and Hugo Porta visited youngsters from Laureus-supported Active Communities Network. Interacting with the youngsters at Alleynian Rugby Club in South London, the legends passed on their specific knowledge of the sport to the aspiring stars. Vice Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy and former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick reflected on the visit, saying: “This is what it’s all about. While the biggest event in world rugby is taking place in this wonderful city, it’s great to meet and speak with these youngsters who are being inspired by the power of rugby today.” For Morné du Plessis, Laureus Academy Member and Team Manager for the legendary Springboks outfit who won the 1995 Rugby World Cup, the visit was a huge success. “Being here today really highlights the power rugby has to bring people together”, he said. “I’m a converted disciple of Sport for Good.”

“I’ve always been fascinated by adventure stories. I’ve read almost every book published about great Antarctic explorers to modern day explorers.” Ron Rutland is discussing his love for adventure, his passion for sport and his desire to demonstrate the power it has to change the world. A sports aficionado and former rugby player, the South African decided, after developing a career as a banker, to drop everything, buy a bike, and go on an adventure. He sold everything he owned, bar a few electrical items which would help document his journey, and got on the road. Unassisted, his plan was to cycle through Africa and Europe, from South Africa to London, for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. “The simplicity of cycling appealed to me, carrying everything I have on my bike; there cannot be a better way to experience a place, you can’t escape the hills, the smells, the wind, the rain. You even notice little bugs on the side of the road, you experience it.” “The longest I went without showering was forty days. Four zero,” he says. “That’s when you realise what you appreciate in life. I arrived on someone’s hut-step to ask if they would be so kind as to allow me to pitch my tent on their land. These people are the poorest on earth, they have nothing. The response I received was no, but you can come and sleep inside, eat with us and use our water to wash. It was incredible.” Rutland’s journey took him through Africa, then through Europe and to England for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. His final journey, from Paris to Brighton for South Africa’s first match of the tournament, was a group effort, with friends, fans and cyclists joining Ron and Laureus Academy Members Morné du Plessis and Hugo Porta for a final effort to raise funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.

AN EPIC JOURNEY…RON RUTLAND CYCLING THROUGH AFRICA

‘IT WAS THE BEST FEELING TO HAVE EVERYTHING I OWNED ATTACHED TO THE BIKE. I DIDN’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT TO WEAR, BECAUSE I ONLY HAD ONE THING. IT MAKES YOU REALISE WHAT’S IMPORTANT.’ Ron Rutland

On 10TH OCTOBER 2015, Laureus Ambassador Jan Frodeno claimed his first Ironman World Championship title in KAILUAKONA, Hawaii, FINISHING in a 50:50 swim, a 4:27:27 bike RIDE and a 2:52:21 marathon to take the win in 8:14:40. Jan became the first athlete to WIN both an Olympic gold medal and the Ironman World Championship.
