Sculpteur par passion et amoureux de l’albâtre, inspiré par les propriétés exceptionnelles de cette pierre brute, j’ai depuis dix ans inventé et développé avec mon équipe de multiples applications architecturales. Elles sont, à ce jour, connues et réputées dans le monde entier. Pour accroître encore davantage les possibilités de cette pierre translucide fabuleuse, je propose le concept SOLO. L’albâtre, équipé de sa source lumineuse, se présente comme une feuille. Il est possible de l’intégrer dans de nouvelles et nombreuses applications grâce à un coût optimisé et une mise en œuvre facilitée.

creations to inspire As a passionate sculptor with a love for alabaster, ten years ago I began with a rough block of stone to invent and develop with my team numerous architectural alabaster creations renowned to this day throughout the world. In order to further expand the possibilities of this fabulous translucent stone, I present the SOLO concept. The alabaster, along with its lighting element, is presented as one unit with a slim profile, an optimized cost, and easier installation. The optimised cost and easier installation mean it is now possible to integrate alabaster in numerous new applications.

Depuis dix ans, l’Atelier Alain Ellouz est devenu le spécialiste des ouvrages d’albâtre et choisit les pierres directement dans les carrières. L’extraction d’une grande quantité de pierres est nécessaire pour sélectionner les blocs de bonne taille, avec la bonne dureté, la bonne transparence et les motifs qui permettent de produire des plaques de qualité. For the past 10 years, Atelier Alain Ellouz has been the specialist in alabaster work, and chooses its stones directly from the quarries. Large quantities of material need to be extracted in order to select the best materials with the right size, hardness, transparency, and pattern for your project. Atelier Alain Ellouz stocks more than 3,000 plates of alabaster, which are constantly being renewed.

Le SOLO Tableau, créé avec une seule plaque d’albâtre est destiné à être accroché au mur tel un tableau. La pierre translucide uniformément et subtilement rétroéclairée offre toute la richesse de ses dessins intérieurs. Le panneau n’est pas éblouissant, il apporte une lumière douce et ouvre un espace de contemplation. The SOLO Art, made out of a single piece of alabaster, is hung on your wall like a painting. The translucent stone is uniformly back-lit to reveal the rich patterns and colours. The subtle, soft light creates a space for contemplation.

Le SOLO Tableau peut être accroché directement tel que nous le produisons. La tranche éclairée de l’albâtre est alors visible. Il est livré prêt à être installé avec son système d’accroche d’une épaisseur très faible de 5mm. Le tableau paraît quasi collé au mur. Comme pour une applique, une arrivée électrique suffit. L’alimentation basse tension (24 V) peut être placée au dos dans une réserve prévue à cet effet dans le mur ou déportée (max 10 m). Le SOLO Tableau peut être accroché isolé ou en triptyque. Le choix des pierres et le type de composition se font alors en coordination avec le client. The SOLO Art can be hung directly as we supply it, so that the thickness of the alabaster is visible. It is ready to install with our system (only 5mm), so that looks as if the panel is virtually touching the wall. As with any light fixture, electrical supply must be considered. The low-voltage power supply can be concealed in a small alcove behind each SOLO panel, or placed anywhere else within 10m of the panel. The SOLO Art can be hung individually, or as a composition of several panels. The type of stone is selected in accordance with each client.

le traitement de l’albâtre Surface treatment for alabaster Autant les qualités esthétiques de l’albâtre sont riches, autant ses caractéristiques techniques naturelles présentent des contraintes. Pour protéger durablement les ouvrages, utiliser l’albâtre pour de nouvelles applications et donner à cette pierre tout son éclat, l’Atelier Alain Ellouz a développé des techniques spécifiques appelées Stonelight.
Les contraintes de l’albâtre / The constraints of alabaster L’albâtre doit sa richesse de dessins intérieurs à des variations de cristalisation et de densité. Celles-ci ont aussi des points de fragilité et peuvent rendre cassantes les plaques. The richness of the patterns within the alabaster are due to the variations in density and crystallisation. The alabaster may weaken around the (fragile) veins.
L’albâtre gypseux utilisé a une dureté de 1, 5 à 2, ce qui est faible (indice du marbre : 4 à 5 , quartz : 7 , diamant : 10) et le rend rayable. The gypsun alabaster that we use has a hardness of 1.5 to 2, which is low and therefore prone to scratching. (Marble is 4-5, quartz is 7, and diamond 10). L’albâtre est sensible à la chaleur et aux chocs. A 70 °C, sa structure se transforme en plâtre et il perd sa transparence. Tout impact sur un albâtre non traité marque la pierre d’un point blanc. Alabaster is sensitive to heat and shock. At 70°C its inner structure is altered and the stone looses its transparency. Any impact on untreated alabaster leaves a dull white mark on the surface of the stone. L’albâtre non traité présente des aspérités de surface, les liquides s’y introduisent et le tâchent. Untreated alabaster is porous and penetrating liquids may stain.
La cristalisation spécifique de l’albâtre qui fait sa transparence est instable au soleil. Il va naturellement ternir et jaunir sous l’effet des UV et des agressions extérieures. Alabaster’s specific crystallization which gives it its transparency is unstable under the sun. It will naturally darken and yellow under UV rays and exterior aggressions.

Although the aesthetic qualities of alabaster are rich, its natural technical characteristics can pose a challenge. In order to protect the material over time and still reveal its natural beauty, Atelier Alain Ellouz has developed a specific technique called Stonelight.

Strengthening treatment This technique encloses the alabaster in an invisible structure, thus adding resistance to flex.
La protection contre les rayures et les chocs Ce traitement encapsule l’albâtre avec l’application d’une ou plusieurs pellicule(s) de protection selon l’exposition aux chocs. Par exemple: un SOLO tableau sera traité plus légèrement qu’un SOLO agencement intégré dans un bar.
Shock and scratch protection This treatment encapsulates the alabaster within one or more layers according to usage: a SOLO Art will recieve a lighter treatment than a SOLO Furnishing integrated into a bar top.
L’imperméabilisation de la surface Ce traitement dépose une couche qui ferme toutes les imperfections de surfaces ou microporosités et permet de résister à différents degrés d’aggressivité.
Sealing the surface This treatment seals every pore of the surface and permits resistance against different degrees of aggresivity.

La translucidité de l’albâtre L’albâtre a de magnifiques propriétés translucides. Celles-ci sont optimum avec une épaisseur de 15 à 20 mm de matière et avec un travail soigné de surface. A toutes les étapes de réalisation, nous veillons à éliminer les défauts de surface de l’albâtre brut par un polissage qui donne une cohésion structurelle, ferme les capillarités et donne le premier éclat.
The translucence of alabaster Alabaster has magnificent translucent properties which are optimal with a thickness of 15-20mm of material and careful surface treatments. at every stage of the process, we attempt to eliminate the surface defects of the raw alabaster by polishing, which gives the alabaster a structural cohesion, seals the pores, and reveals depth of the material.

SYSTEME A14 Ce type d’accroche convient pour les grands panneaux avec plusieurs éléments SOLO, il permet d’ajuster parfaitement les panneaux entre eux et de répartir les charges. (cf exemple de montage de mur pages 32 à 41) Ce sytème d’accroche est constitué de rails horizontaux à fixer au mur et de rails verticaux fixés derrière les panneaux SOLO. 14mm

The finishing on the edges of the SOLO allows for different integration techniques. Once the elements are attached to the wall (with A5 or A14), the wall can be finished so that the SOLO will appear tto be hung, partially inset, flush, or recessed.

For a surface greater than 1m2, it is possible to use multiple alabaster SOLO panels. The layout of the SOLO elements and the different alabaster slabs is decided with the interior architect according to aesthetic and technical choices.

UN PROJET DE LA CONCEPTION À LA CONSTRUCTION : TOUTES LES ÉTAPES DE LA RÉALISATION.
Pour une rénovation d’un salon avec la création d’une nouvelle ambiance l’architecte a pris le parti pour le mur de part et d’autre de la cheminée, d’un habillage en albâtre rétroéclairé avec des décors appliqués qui rythment la surface. When renovating a living room, the architect wanted to create a new atmposhere by fitting the wall surrounding the fireplace with back-lit SOLO panels, embellished by decorative strips to add rhythm to the surface. By doing this, the wall becomes a light fixture, shining its soft light throughout the room. The dimming option sets the right tone for the ambiance of the room.

When the plans have been approved, the SOLO panels are manufactored within 3-4 weeks. Each element is labelled for a comprehensive installation per the layout and wiring diagram.

FIXATION DES SUPPORTS
L’agenceur prépare la structure. Pour cela, il positionne les rails horizontaux sur le mur suivant l’écartement identifié sur les plans. Il fixe les rails en fonction de la nature du support en veillant à bien respecter la planéité de l’ensemble. Your carpenters will install the mounting rails. The exact position and spacing of the horizontal rails will be specified on the plans. They will mount the rails according to the structure of the wall, taking great care to stay on the same plane. They will set the transformers and other electrical devices in place, for the next stage.

In order to finish the 2cm room for manoeuvre between the SOLO panels and the wall or ceiling, we can install a filler. It can be applied flush with the wall, or recessed to create a groove. All that will remain is to set the decorations in place.

THE BENEFITS OF THE SOLO This project can be finished with a limited workforce, no sanding, and no surface treatments on-site. It can be put together by a local team of craftsmen in two days. The SOLO option costs 40% less than a “solid” alabaster wall option.

The SOLO furnishing panels are a great way for furniture makers and designers to create new furniture or revisit an existing design.

Une nouvelle mise en lumière de la boutique historique Guerlain des Champs Elysées avec les éléments SOLO agencement. Le SOLO a pu répondre au véritable défi qu’ont les architectes d’intérieur de Guerlain d’apporter dans cette boutique classée une nouvelle fraîcheur. La lumière douce valorise les transparences et les couleurs des parfums. Une nouvelle invitation pour les sens.
The historic Guerlain shop on the Champs Elysées has recently brought in new light with SOLO furnishing elements. The SOLO was the answer to the challenge the interior architects faced to give this flagship store a new, fresh feel.

Comme cela a été fait pour cette installation, les éléments SOLO sont livrés en plaques prêtes à êtres fixées au mur dans des niches et à poser sur les comptoirs. L’agenceur a posé lui même les niches SOLO, le montage s’est fait en quelques heures et sans aucune poussière. La pose peut par exemple se faire la nuit pour éviter à la boutique de fermer. Rien n’ayant été scellé, au même titre qu’un luminaire, les SOLO sont à tout moment amovibles. For this project, the SOLO elements were delivered in plates ready to be installed in the openings and onto the counters. The builders installed the SOLO themselves in a few hours without a speck of dust. This enabled installation to be done overnight so that the store could stay open during its regular business hours. Like any other light fixtures, the SOLO are removable at any time since nothing has been glued into place.
Les panneaux SOLO garnissent le fond de quatre vitrines en remplacement de miroirs. Les quatre consoles sont également revêtues de plateaux d’albâtre. Le tout amovible. La pierre nouvelle se marie parfaitement à l’ensemble composé de marbres et les réveille par la fraîcheur de son éclairage. The SOLO panels, fitted at the back of four openings, replacing the mirrors that were there previously. The four countertops have also been fitted with alabaster plates, all of them removable. The new stone fits perfectly among the composed marbles and reveals them with a fresh new light.

Le nouvel espace dont dispose la marque au coeur de Londres, 13 Bond Street a pu bénéficier du tout nouveau concept SOLO afin d’intégrer de l’albâtre dans deux verrières en serrurerie.
The canopies of Jaeger LeCoultre in London, an ambitious project Alabaster and metal are major themes in the line of new Jaeger LeCoultre stores throughout the world, created by interior architect Marika Chaumet. In the heart of London, 13 Bond Street, this new space benefitted from the best the SOLO has to offer.

170 éléments SOLO sur mesure et presque tous différents composent ce vaste ensemble oblongue de 24 m2. Chaque plaque d’albâtre a été soigneusement choisie pour une harmonieuse composition. Une simulation avec les photographies des plaques réelles a été présentée au client pour validation avant la réalisation. Chaque élément réalisé a été identifié selon sa position. La lumière a été adaptée en fonction des surfaces de chaque plaque pour un rendu général uniforme. 170 SOLO elements, each custom, compose this 24 m2. oblong ceiling ensemble. Each plate was carefully selected for a harmonious composition. A virtual image using photos of real alabaster was presented to the client for approval prior to production. Each and every element was identified and labelled according to its shape and position. We adapted the light according to the area of each plate for an impressive, uniform result.

La boutique ne dispose pas d’une grande hauteur. Il fallait donc trouver une technique nécessitant le minimum de profondeur. De plus, tous les réseaux passant dans cette zone du plafond doivent être visitables. Les SOLO étant indépendants les uns des autres et du support, sont démontables un par un et répondent à cette nécessité. LE MONTAGE SUR PLACE PAR L’ÉQUIPE LOCALE
L’intégration dans la structure acier et le câblage électrique a été faite par l’agenceur du client.
THE SOLO STRENGTH : COMPACT AND REMOVABLE
The Jaeger LeCoultre store posed a challenge, as it had a limited ceiling height. Moreover, for security reasons, access into the ceiling had to be made available at any time. The SOLO was the answer to this great challenge, being an ensemble of independent panels which are easy to remove. ON SITE INSTALLAT ION BY A LOCAL TEAM
The team of carpenters working on site for the clients easily installed the SOLO and the wiring into the steel structure.
