HTM 201 Group Project Option #1 HTM Magazine Instructions and Rubric Section Leader: Group Members 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. PREPARATION ACTIVITIES: Individually • • • • •

Review different programs you will use to create your magazine such as Word, Photoshop, Illustrator, Publisher, issuu.com, etc. Visit online platforms such as issuu.com, joomag.com, yumpu.com, etc. and get familiar with the array of magazine styles and content. Consider how you might convey the School of HTM culture in a professional manner to the readers of the magazine (other students). Sit on the School of HTM couch for 1 hour and meet 2 people other than staff or faculty. You can eventually turn these interactions into a magazine column, cartoon, advertisement, and more. Prepare your ideas such as an approach, potential takeaway points for the student reader, color schemes, and more.

Meet with your group members to share ideas, discuss your strengths, weaknesses, interests, and confirm meeting times for the semester. Meet with your group to assign tasks, responsibilities, and roles. Discuss an approach, theme, milestones, and timeline for the magazine. Meet with your sub-groups and fill in your HTM Magazine workbook Review your documents with your section leader.

Conducting Interviews • • • •

The group should decide how to conduct a minimum of 6 interviews total for the group. This will include 1 HTM staff, alumni, professor, current local student, current international student, and industry professional. Your interviews can be conducted alone, in sub-groups, or as a group. Prepare 6 questions per interview. Gather or create visual outputs (pictures, symbols, images, etc.) from each interview to use in the magazine.

FINALIZE CHALLENGE: • Meet with your group to report your interview findings. • From the gathered information create a featured topic or theme that will be the headline of the magazine. Dedicate a page to this featured topic or theme. This is your “Tips for HTM Success” piece. • Write your articles and display in your desired software program. • Create a 2-minute video that showcases the magazine. The purpose of the video is to “sell” your magazine to the student reader. Think of the video as a way for you to “pitch” your magazine as the most informative, creative, interesting, and worth subscribing. • Get feedback from your section leader. REQUIRED DELIVERABLES: • Magazine workbook with; o Interview sheets with questions completed; and o Content worksheet completed. • >8 page hard copy professional magazine including; o 6 Interviews; o 6 Student association pages; o Tips for HTM success piece; o HTM on the couch piece; and, • A 2-minute (maximum) video

Sub-Category Workbook submitted with detailed information about 6 student associations. Thorough research and creativity is evident and clearly conveyed in the magazine content sheet. Interviews scheduled by due date with 6 interviewees. Interview questions are in-depth and thought provoking. Flow of the questions is responsive, probing, and relevant.

Articles indicate evidence of research and data collected. The “Tips for Success� article is creative and captures the School of HTM and hospitality and tourism industry culture based on research. All the components required for the magazine are included.
