USA | 96 MIN D: Ben Dickinson E: Andrew Hasse & Megan Brooks In near-future Brooklyn, David is an overworked, advertising executive working on a high profile campaign for a new generation of Augmented Reality glasses. When he uses the glasses to develope a lifelike avatar of his best friend’s girlfriend, he isn’t prepared for what happens next. FRI

ABOUT THE editors

Describing the dynamic in the editing room of Ben Dickinson’s stunning tech-scene social satire, Creative Control, editor Andrew Hasse says, “Ben and I know each other so well and have this common language and film-school training, and Megan brings an intuitive, nononsense, outsider’s perspective. She kept us honest, and we knew it wasn’t right until we all agreed.” This year the cutting team of Andrew Hasse and Megan Brooks has credits on two striking independent films — pictures that just happen

to be their first two credits as narrative film editors. In addition to Dickinson’s film there is Jon Watts’s Cop Car, a nail-biting cat-and-mouse tale involving two kids, one bad cop and one stolen police vehicle. For Creative Control, Brooks says the goal was to “help Ben figure out the tone of the movie he shot, not necessarily the movie he wrote.”

These are films that have not yet premiered in the United States. Some have screened internationally at top festivals, but the filmmakers need to preserve the ‘premiere’ status for possible inclusion in top U.S. film festivals. These festivals often require a film never to have played before, so keeping secrecy in Tacoma allows them to both screen here (secretly!) and preserve that status elsewhere.

Winner of the Jury Prize at Slamdance 2015. SAT

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER

The first seeds of Tired Moonlight came to Britni West while she was looking for a place to live. “I was touring apartments in Minneapolis,” West recalls, “and these two women who were living together in a strange, dark apartment invited me into their home.” West, who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in film from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2008, began drafting a script before realizing that this brand of group portraiture best lent itself to her hometown of Kalispell, Mont. In the summer of 2012,

Killing Them Safely

USA | 94 MIN D: Nick Berardini P: Jamie Gonçalves “Protecting Life. Protecting Truth” is the company motto for Taser International. Originally created as a safer alternative to guns in law enforcement, the taser became the entrepreneurial passion project of brothers Tom and Rick Smith. In 1999 the M26 was released on the market and became the weapon of choice for police departments throughout the country. SAT

ABOUT THE FILMMAKERs

University of Missouri broadcast journalism major Nick Berardini first learned about the issue of stun gun dangers in 2009, while working the night shift at Columbia, Missouri’s NBC affiliate. Hearing over the police scanner that Stanley Harlan had been tased by an officer and died in nearby Mobley (followed by statements from his parents contradicting the police narrative), he drove that night to investigate for himself. D: Khalik Allah 3. Field Niggas USA | 60 MIN Field Niggas is a stark portrayal of the inner city struggle. It depicts an elusive beauty that so often goes unnoticed. Shot entirely at nighttime on the corner of 125th and Lexington avenue in Harlem, Khalik Allah’s camera encompasses, and richly depicts, the mental, physical and spiritual struggle of 125th and Lexington Avenue’s most exhausted and depressed inhabitants.

Field Niggas, taking it’s name from Malcolm X’s famous lecture, “Message to the Grassroots,” takes us into a world that most of us would choose to avoid. Khalik’s objective is to shine light on fear, dispel it, and prove that love exists everywhere no matter how much it’s presence has been obscured by poverty, addiction and pain. Ultimately Field Niggas is a hauntingly honest, rich depiction of the poor.
