Family-friendly beginner trails to hike near Valemount by Ruby Hogg

For whatever reason, whether you’ve just started hiking, you’re recovering from an injury, or traveling with children, we have just the hike for you!

Rearguard Falls The beginner hike of all beginner hikes, this short trail will take you down to the beautiful Rearguard Falls. From the viewpoint you might catch sight of a group of rafters careening down the river, or if it’s later in the season, you might see the spawning salmon swimming up the fall. Distance: 0.2 km each way, 0.4 km return Time: 30 minutes

Little Lost Lake This is a fantastic beginner hike with one slightly steep section at the beginning before it more or less levels out. There is one small creek crossing near the end before you reach the lake. There is a great little picnic spot, as well as a trail that takes you around the entire lake and back to the main trail. (There are a few steeper trails that head up to view waterfalls and overlook the lake but there is some loose rock and those two are considered a bit more difficult.) Distance: 1.7 km each way, 3.4 km return Time: 1-2 hours

Kinney Lake Every year, thousands of tourists flock to this worldfamous trail to see the old forest growth, the cyan blue lake, and the rushing Robson River. Make sure to bring a camera on this amazing trail. Once you reach the lake there is a picnic area where you can sit and bask in the beauty. Distance: 4.5 km to the first picnic area, 9 km return Time: 2-4 hours return

Cranberry Marsh Loop Equipped with two beautiful viewing towers and panoramic mountain views, the Cranberry Marsh Loop (also known as the Starratt Wildlife Management Area) is a great place for beginner hikers and experts alike. The viewing towers provide great places to take a quick break. It’s a great place to view birds, and lucky visitors may even catch a glimpse of a muskrat or other furry animal. With little to no elevation gain, and ample places to stop for a quick break, this loop is highly recommended. Distance: 5.5km loop Time: 1-3 hours

Overlander Falls Watching waterfalls is such a great way to spend the day. There are two trails to reach these falls. The first is a parking lot on the right hand side at the top of the hill just as your leaving Mount Robson (headed towards Jasper) and the second is about 1 km down Hargreaves Road (across the highway from the Mt Robson Visitor Centre). The trail from the first parking lot is significantly shorter (600 m) while the trail from the second parking lot longer (5 km). Distance: 1st parking lot- 600 m (return), 2nd parking lot- 5 km return (2.5 km each way) Time: 1-3 hours

Think your kids are too young to hike? Consider taking them on these nature walks, some of which can be catered to different lengths / RUBY HOGG

Swift Creek Lookout This is a beautiful little trail that runs along Swift creek for some distance before you start a steady climb to the viewpoint. At the viewpoint there is a picnic table for you to sit on and take in the stunning view of Canoe Mountain and the valley below. Distance: 3.5 km Time: 1-2 hours

Are you an

Jackman Flats

fan?

Jackman Flats is a great flat section with multiple options for the whole family. Choose between 4 different loops ranging in length (1km-6kms). There are once again, gorgeous mountain views (I am starting to see a trend here). Distance: 1.4km-6.2kms Time: 30 min-3 hours For more info on these and other trails visit www.valemounttrails.com Ruby Hogg is a founder of the blog Wide Open World, a platform dedicated to getting others outside. Seven ways to beat the heat in the Robson Valley

Why not be a tourist in your own backyard? These ideas are sure to help you beat the heat on hot summer days / RUBY HOGG

by Ruby Hogg Summer has arrived, and with it comes the heat. Luckily, we’ve come up with a few ways to have you feeling cool all summer long.

Chasing Waterfalls This valley is home to many beautiful waterfalls with an array of accessibility. Rearguard Falls, Overlander Falls, and Moose River Falls are some of the waterfalls near Mt. Robson that are just a few minutes walk from the highway. A more adventurous soul might want to hike up above Little Lost Lake to the nearby falls. McBride hosts some impressive waterfalls as well. Morkill Falls is near Crescent Spur. While the hike is short please use care as there are no safety railings. Rainbow Falls is within close proximity to McBride, and is accessed via a short hike.

Kinbasket Lake Spreading 160Km long, Kinbasket Lake is not a small body of water by any means. Luckily for us, it’s most Western point is short drive from Valemount. With several campsites and beaches, it’s the perfect place to set up camp for the night, or enjoy a nice wiener roast. Brave souls can test their stamina by jumping in the freezing

cold water, or take a canoe out. The Marina at the 21km mark is a great place to put a boat in and go for a fish.

Self-Propelled non-motorized water sports There are many places in the area to take a canoe or kayak out. Two great places for beginner paddlers are the Starratt Wildlife park (commonly known as the marsh) or Cranberry Lake. Both require very little portaging and are small enough that the shore is never too far away. Once you have the hang of it, Moose Lake, Lucerne, Yellowhead, and Kinbasket are more great options to explore.

Berg Lake Trail

Prepare yourself for spectacular views of the Mount Robson itself straight from the boat. Float trips are suitable for all ages. Adventure seekers can choose to book a whitewater trip. These trips start further downstream. Be prepared to get wet, cool off, and have fun.

Escape to the Alpine As a general rule, it’s often a bit cooler in the alpine. There are multitudes of hiking tails in the Robson Valley that will get you high, but there is always also the option of catching a ride. Robson Heli-Magic offers customizable heli-hiking drop offs. It’s such a treasure to be able to enjoy the alpine without all of the hard work.

If you haven’t hiked this trail yet, drop everything you’re doing, drive to Mount Robson, and start hiking. If Berg Lake seems a bit intimidating, there are many turn around places on the 24 km trail. A popular day trip is to hike from the parking lot 4.5km to the first picnic area near Kinney, and then back down. There is also a campsite and shelter at the 7 km mark.

Treats

White Water Rafting (Robson or Stellar)

Ruby Hogg is a founder of the blog Wide Open World, a platform dedicated to getting others outside. Visit it here: www.wideopenworld.ca

There are two raft companies based out of Valemount that offer both white-water and gentle float trips. The float trip starts in Mount Robson Provincial Park.

If all else fails, throw the sprinkler on in the backyard or take the kids down to the playground to go through the “mister”. Afterwards, take the edge off of the heat with an ice cream or iced coffee from the Gathering Tree. Or perhaps sit on the deck and enjoy a nice cool craft beer from Three Ranges. The opportunities are endless

Time for a holiday! The Rocky Mountain Goat will not be publishing an issue July 12th to accommodate staff holidays. Thanks for your understanding and be sure to check out our website for breaking news!
